War Photographer Poem
How is the theme of war portrayed through imagery in the poems Lament by Gillian Clarke and War
Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy?
Lament is written by Welsh poet Gillian Clarke, which is an elegy where she laments the loss of lives
due to the Gulf War in 1991. Through the use of imagery and figurative language, the theme of war is
portrayed violently and unpleasantly. Similarly, in Carol Ann Duffy s poem War Photographer, war is
depicted through the description of developing photos that the photographer has taken, in which one
of several will be chosen for the Sunday Supplement. This poem not only uses language and literary
devices to reveal the consequences of conflict, but also through tone and atmosphere reflects the
dismissive attitudes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the opening stanza of War Photographer, references to religion, light is red , church , priest , Mass ,
All flesh is grass , are very prominent and symbolic. The photographer is metaphorically described as
a priest preparing to say Mass, with the names of countries in war instead of words of a service, and
with the red light of the darkroom symbolizing the church tabernacle lamp. This metaphor reminds us
of the transience of life, when one death can mean so little. Likewise in Lament, the repetition of For
at the start of each verse brings a chanting like effect, which reflect religion and ritualism. The entire
poem is almost like a song, a desolate tune of mourning for the lost lives. In addition, pulsing burden ,
also suggests a rhythmic and regular beat to the poem. This phrase in itself is a paradox, where pulsing
represents energy and liveliness, whereas burden represents a weight and unpleasantness; it reflects
the burden of war on the country, repressing animals and humans who try to

The Love Song Of J Alfred Prufrock Analysis
T.S. Eliot was born in 1888 and died in 1965. Eliot set new directions in poetry. His criticism provided
new judgements to guide assessments of poetry. In Eliot s critical work on poets and poetry, he
observed that the modern inclination is to put up with some degree of incoherence. So long as the
verse sounds well and presents striking and melodious imagery. In an age like ours lacking common
standards poets need to remind themselves that it is not sufficient to rely upon those gifts, which are
native to them, and which they exercise with ease. That good poetry must exhibit several qualities in
proportion of which one is good sense. (Eliot) Some other famous quotes are Genuine poetry can
communicate before it is understood. (Eliot) and finally Human kind cannot bear much reality. (Eliot)
Eliot s poem The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a dramatic monologue. I think the poem s central
themes include Prufrock s inability to act and his feelings of alienation. I think in the beginning
T.S. Eliot may have chosen to present this epigraph in Italian because he wanted to keep his poem at a
high intellectual level and assumed many of his readers would know Italian. The epigraph should alert
to readers this poems sophistication, and should expect subtle literary devices and scholarly allusions.
The first two lines feelings are of a lovely romantic evening. Then line 3 with the image of a sick
etherized patient, dramatically alters it. The feelings the evening evokes are no longer lovely and
romantic but dark and ominous. The metaphor developed in this stanza is a cat compared to smoke.
Also compared to that of an evening etherized in line 3 they are alike because they both imply slow
motion or paralysis. The effect of juxtaposing the actions of taking of a toast and tea and having time
for visions and revisions is interesting since eating is a mundane activity, while having visions is a far
more elevated one. The intellectual work of visions is trivialized by being placed on the same level as
taking of a toast and tea. I think the character is fastidiously dressed and has thinning hair. Skinny
arms and legs also. Indecisive and disillusioned. He lacks energy to pursue his goals and dreams.

Megan s Law
Megan s Law Protection More Important than Privacy
In 1994, twice convicted sex offender Jesse Timmendequas raped and murdered Megan Kanka, a
seven year old girl who lived across the street. In reaction to this emotionally charged crime, Megan s
home state of New Jersey ratified a community notification bill dubbed Megan s Law just three
months later. This fall, a national version of the law went into effect, mandating that all fifty states
notify citizens in writing of the presence of convicted sex offenders within their communities.
Certainly, society has a responsibility to protect children from sex offenders, and many feel that
Megan s Law is the best course of action. However, others feel that it is an unwarranted ... Show more

The facts seem clear: if an individual commits a sex crime more than once, it is likely he or she will
commit the same type of crime again. Furthermore, Megan s Law is capable of halting these
destructive patterns of reoccurrence.
Critics often argue that notification is a form of double jeopardy through which a criminal suffers
punishment twice for the same crime. However, this is a gross misunderstanding of the law. The intent
of the law is not to inflict additional harm on the offender. Rather, it is to provide a crucial service for
the public. It is true that released sex offenders may be inconvenienced by Megan s Law, but this is
merely a side effect of protecting our children and not a deliberate method of additional punishment.
And let us think about the individuals who are adversely affected by Megan s Law, for it applies only
to those individuals who have committed multiple acts of violent molestation. Thus, Megan s Law is
aimed squarely at those who pose a clear and present danger to their community, and it directly and
effectively reduces the chances that these select high risk individuals will harm children.
Other critics argue that Megan s Law destroys the right to privacy of released criminals. However, as
Americans, we are not endowed with an unconditional right to privacy. Roe v. Wade established that
in certain cases privacy must be regarded as a right in matters such as marriage, procreation, child
rearing

Rhetorical Analysis On Rocky Balboa
Rocky Balboa
Each person has the right to follow their dreams. Sometimes those dreams are fulfilled, but sometimes
they are put on hold when life demands individuals to pursue something more practical. If an
individual is willing to fight for what they want, anything is possible. As shown in Rocky Balboa,
Rocky Balboa s desire is to continue boxing in the ring. The Commission Chair denies his request, due
to his age, although he has passed all of the required tests. Rocky Balboa challenges his denial by
appealing to the Commission Chair s logic, ethics, and emotion. During this session, Rocky
effectively uses logos, ethos, and pathos to lead the Commission Chair to a decision allowing him to
obtain his license to box again. This speech is effective in its portrayal that as long as one has done
everything in their power to achieve their goals, that no one should have the power to stop them.
Using logos in his speech, Balboa appeals to the logic of the Commission Chair by referring to the
pursuit of happiness. When the Commission chair responds that they are looking out for Balboa s
interests, (Eidenmuller) his rebuttal is that he has done everything in his power to obtain his license,
yet he is still told No (Eidenmuller). This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

(Eidenmuller) Everyone has had a time in their lives when someone has tried to tell them they could
not do something they wanted to. As long as one is willing to do what it takes, as Balboa did in this
movie, there should be no one in the way to stop them. Reaching the Chair on an emotional level

Humor In The Princess Bride
The Princess Bride captures the element of humor and witty comedy through effective
characterization to bring out the true version of the fantasy involving the classic love stories in
medieval kingdom setting. Firstly, from the onset, the film opens with hilarious comments from the
grandson as the grandfather prepares to read the story. The grandson appears less enthusiastic to hear
the narration, and seeks to know what exactly the story will unfold by remarking that if the fairytale
will have scenes involving a lot of kissing. Falk in preemptive version alludes to the fact that
obviously the story has eminent kissing and bounty of screaming Eels (Haase, 2007). This claim sets
the tone for a true comedy delivered in quasi heroic epic fantasy version where the episodes transcend
viewers emotional expectations in engaging humor scenes despite the enthralling swordfights and
combats. In fact, The Princess Bride narration is the platform that the grandfather uses to ... Show

This paper examines and discusses how major legal factor directly relate to foreign investment; Board
of Investment Regulations and its role affect ownership and operation of foreign direct investment
(FDI) in Thailand. This paper also provides brief background of Thailand and comprehensive
information on the above legal concerns. Furthermore, it illustrates how the outcome of these
regulations is in favor of FDI and; therefore, attract foreign investors to invest in Thailand.

BOI offers 2 types of incentive to qualified foreign direct investors; 1) Tax incentives
BOI grants tax incentives to qualified foreign direct investors. Tax incentives are deduction,

Non tax incentives are any privileges granted by BOI which can be used to waive Thai regulations
imposed specifically on foreign investors. Two examples are permissions to own land and to forward
money back to home country in foreign currency.
Other than the 2 types of incentives offered by BOI, Thai government further ensure that investors

Psychological Effects Of Marijuana Essay
For this paper I chose the topic of Marijuana. Marijuana is the crumbled parts of the Marijuana plant.
The origin of Marijuana was written in the writing of the Chinese emperor Shen Nung. At this point in
time 2737 B.C. it was used as a form of medicine until it spread to India where it was used
recreationally. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classified marijuana along with heroin and LSD
as a Schedule I drug, i.e., having the relatively highest abuse potential and no accepted medical use
(Marijuana History. (n.d.)). This substance has been used in many different ways over the years.
Medical Marijuana can be ingested by smoking it (pipe, rolling into a joint or cigarette, or by using a
bong), vaporizing it, eating it, using it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When using the substance, it triggers these brain receptors which in turn triggers the effects that you
get using the substance. Some of the effects that come with this are mild euphoria, alterations in vision
and judgment result in distortions of time and space, acute intoxication that may occasionally induce
visual hallucinations, anxiety, depression, extreme variability of mood, paranoid reactions, and
psychoses lasting from four to six hours. Physical effects include reddening of the eyes, dryness of the
mouth and throat, moderate increase in the rapidity of the heartbeat, tightness of the chest (if the drug
is smoked), drowsiness, unsteadiness, and muscular incoordination (Pharmacology of Marijuana
MassCann/NORML. (n.d.)). The brain does produce a TCH like substance that gives off a natural high
without using any drugs whatsoever. But when using the substance this increases the THC levels in
your body with overall gives you a chemically induced high. Using this substance often would be
considered as chronic use. When using Marijuana daily it can effect your memory but it is because
TCH stays in the body up to 48 hours after using the substance (Pharmacology of Marijuana
MassCann/NORML. (n.d.)) , so if you do use it everyday you will eventually lose brain cells that ties
to memory. Also there is evidence that the THC content of some strains of marijuana being sold today
might be as high as

Oedipus The Good Life
Since ancient times, many have sought to the answer the philosophical question, What is the good life
? This is a question with no simple answer! For some individuals, the good life could mean living a
life based on justice and rationality, or on faith and trust in the divine, or on the attainment of power,
military, glory, and reputation. Their perspectives varied greatly depending upon their cultural values
and contexts.
Group I: Oedipus Oedipus Rex, written by Sophocles
Group II: Socrates in the Apology (written by Plato)

Measuring Chirality in Ibuprofen Using a Homemade Polarimeter

Abstract
For this project, I will be conducting multiple experiments regarding the chirality of different forms of
ibuprofen. The question I m trying to solve is whether or not common brands of ibuprofen have the
same formulation. In order to perform this exercise, I will need to create a homemade polarimeter in
order to measure the angle at which the brands of ibuprofen will reflect light, resulting in finding out if
the chosen brands have a varied rotation of light. I believe that the different brands will reflect at
different angles based off of its chirality. After performing the tests, the results I have gathered led me
to believe that my hypothesis was proven to be wrong. The Motrin, Advil, and Equate seemed to all
get bright in the same areas. The only difference was that the Motrin was the brightest one out of them
all.

Crime and corruption have become rampant today in our society and countless money is lost each year
due to white collar crime, fraud, and embezzlement.
This paper presents a technique of an ongoing work to combat white collar crime in telephone

Often after a long legal battle, the victims are left with a worthless judgement and no recovery.
One solution to avoid white collar crimes and shorten the lengthy time in locating and serving
perpetrators with a judgement is by the use of biometrics techniques for identifying and verifying
individuals. Biometrics are methods for recognizing a user based on his/her unique physiological
and/or behavioural characteristics. These characteristics include fingerprints, speech, face, retina, iris,
hand written signature, hand geometry, wrist veins, etc. Biometric systems are being commercially
developed for a number of financial and securit applications. Many people today have access to their
company s information systems by logging in from home. Also, internet services and telephone
banking are widely used by the corporate and private sectors. Therefore to protect one s resources or
information with a simple password is not reliable and secure in the world of today. The conventional
methods of using keys, access passwords and access cards are being easily overcome by people with
criminal intention.
Voice signals as a unique behavioral characteristics is proposed in this paper for speaker identification
and verification over short distance telephone lines using artificial neural networks. This will address
the white collar crimes over the telephone lines. Speaker identification [1] and verification [2] over

It made it equally as important as anything else did on the agenda. Also the United States was now a
state of mobilization. The armed forces would now and always be at a striking force. All of the
changes were something new to the people of America but it was an idea that was not only accepted it
was expected. The same rings true with 9/11 in relation to the role of America. Our sole focus is
national security and to put our military at a point of being called upon any second. The United States
has embraced the idea that things have changed and are willing to do whatever possible to prevent
future events of this magnitude. Another characteristic that the Cold War Period and 9/11 hold in
common is that both were a pervasive political and military competition that dominated international
politics. On September 11, 2001 terrorism became a reality! There is no way for the United States to
prevent future attacks on Americans without working as a coalition force with the other nations to
identify, track, and eliminate terrorist networks around the world. One of the main problems with
fighting a war on terrorism is that the nations of the world have become accustomed to working alone
as individuals vice working together. The United States will need to change its approach in order to
conquer the worldwide threat of terrorism. The way to defeat terrorism at home and around the world
is to form an international counter terrorist task force. In order to prevent

Familial Polyposis
Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a genetic disease that can be inherited. If a person has FAP,
they are likely to get colorectal cancer. If FAP is not treated, there is about a 100% chance you will
receive colorectal cancer. FAP produces growths with mucus on the inside walls of the colon and
rectum. The growths are called polyps. You can get between 100 and 1000 polyps in just 10 years. The
genetic test that they run for FAP is a blood screening test for the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC)
gene. The blood test is for checking for a mutation in the APC gene. If the results are positive, closely
related family members should be tested too. You should also be tested if colon cancer is hereditary, or

I would say if the person getting tested is over 18, they should be able to know what the test is about
and the results. If they are 18, they should be mature enough to understand that the genetic test is not

If the child the parents are getting tested is adopted, the rules should differ. When a child goes up for
adoption, they should automatically get a genetic test for mutations in genes because they might not
know the child s family history. If the place of adoption does not test the child, it should be a
requirement to whoever adopts the kid to get it genetically tested before the parents can take the child
home.
This is just my opinion on what I would do about the issues relating genetic testing with the American
Society of Human Genetics. If you have an immediate family member with a genetic disease or

Many aspects color how exactly a translator interprets a text, allowing for a great deal of variation to
occur between different translator s versions of the same text. This holds true for the Middle Eastern
classic A Thousand and One Arabian Nights, as anyone can observe a multitude of differences
between the extensive numbers of English translations that have been released over the past three
centuries. Cultural beliefs and ideas play a large role in the variances, but do not account for all of the
discrepancies, especially in terms of maturity level. A translation s maturity level is based on more

upon the intent of the translators. Burton s intent is also visible in his means of publication. British
conservatism was at its height during the time in which Burton was publishing his translation, making
it so he had to publish said translation privately in order to avoid violating laws such as the Obscene

EVOLUTIONS OF HUNTING
Bob woke up early to set up trail cameras on his hunting land. He monitors the pictures and maps out

uses his a rifle to take down the 10 point buck he had been watching for a week before he even got to

Lack Of Power In Macbeth
The Tragedy of Macbeth
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a famous play written by the English play writer Shakespeare. The play
was written in 1606 during the reign of James I. The main idea of the play is the fall of Macbeth after
he has gained power. The central theme is appearance vs. reality or fair is foul and foul is fair. The
central question to this play is to what extent does power (or the lack of power) affect individuals
and/or relationships? And how do the decisions and actions of people reveal their personalities? Both
of these questions are answered throughout the play as they reveal the real personalities of the
characters in the play. One of the most profound and important theme in Shakespeare s Macbeth

play progressed, the two seemed to change positions. This shows how Macbeth was influenced by
others to become cold hearted and how he later understood his flaw. Lady Macbeth had far greater
strength of will than her husband. While he hesitates and is distrustful of his powers, she never
wavers. She doesn t need no supernatural temptations to urge her on. At the end of Act 1 scene 5, she
makes a strong resolution to win the crown for her husband: Hie thee hither, That I may pour my
spirits in thine ear, And chastise with the valor of my tongue All that impedes thee from the golden
which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem To have thee crown d withal. This shows how strong she
was early in the play. She was determined for her husband to become king and that has caused her
constant fear and worry at the end of the play. She died duo to her spiritual pain that caused her to give

Essay on Women in Ministry
Women have been involved in Christian ministry since the very beginning of Christianity. It has
declined and risen according to the acceptance of the environment. The two papers addressed in this
essay document the rise of women ministers in the Holiness movement as well as the decline of
women in the modern Pentecostal movement. In response to this decline in women in ministry,
Courtney Stewart gave points which the UPCI should tackle to rectify the situation. In Holy Boldness
Women Preachers Autobiographies and the Sanctified Self, the history of women in ministry is
addressed. The excerpt given starts by discussing the pioneers of women ministers Wesleyan/Holiness
groups. It was in the Holiness movement in the late 19th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in
ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast
forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal
movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as
ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out,
run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down
church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to
Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number
has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris
gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their
position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to
where they must defend their calling. 2. There were many more denominations involved in the
Pentecostal movement than just the Holiness groups who were not willing to license women. 3. There
are little or no role models who promote women in

behaviour of an individual at a particular moment is usually determined by his strongest need. Needs
have a certain priority or hierarchy. As the more basic needs are satisfied an individual seeks to satisfy
the higher needs. If his basic needs are not met, efforts to satisfy the higher needs should be
postponed. Once a need is satisfied it loses its capacity to induce the man to work. Only unsatisfied ...

Stayin Alive Analyse
Genre Review
The song I chose for this assignment is Stayin Alive, a disco song performed by the Bee Gees in 1977.
The Bee Gees, a successful disco band, was composed of three brothers whose achievements include
releasing six consecutive number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
Disco, the genre of the selected song, is characterized by many different influences and is considered
to be a melting pot of various genres as disco borrowed from soul, jazz, Latin, funk, and classical
music to create a unique yet explosive new style of music. Originating in the early 1970 s with some
of the ingredients used in Motown, disco enjoyed massive success until about the early 1980 s when
anti disco sentiment effectually killed it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Synthesizers were also commonly used in disco to provide background while solo lines and harmonies
performed with various brass instruments accented the songs. Generally, the primary themes of disco
lyrics are about love, sex and or dancing although some songs did not fit this mold. Many disco artists
often sang in a high pitched falsetto voice, which was labeled as weird or effeminate as most disco
artists were males and males were expected to fit their stereotype. This song fits this genre perfectly as
the the theme of Stayin Alive is about how the artist can escape the hardships of his life and forget
about everything when he is out on the dance floor. This song is perfect example of how disco helped
people express themselves through dancing especially when they were struggling in life, a theme that
anybody can relate to no matter who they

Data warehousing is a powerful business intelligence tool for maximizing the organization s

technologies, maid to allow executive, manager, and analyst, to make faster decisions.
IT managers need to learn and implement data warehousing because it is very powerful tool provides

The Consequences Of Globalization And Its Effects On The...
If I focus on only one negative consequence of globalization then I will choose dish cable where you
can share entertain channels all over the world. Every country has their own culture and tradition. In
some countries some activities are acceptable but for others are prohibited. For example having boy
and girl friend is normal in western society but it is prohibited in Arab nations or Middle East or
Muslim Nations. Other example I can think of is that pre marital relationship which is normal in some
countries but it is prohibited in Arab nations or Muslim Nations. Why it is problematic? Because it
may create infected diseases around the world. For instances if people are open to have relationship
with multiple partner it will create sexual infected diseases. There are so many sexual disease because
of open relationship. Some are fatal infected disease such as HIV and AIDs. AIDS (Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome) is an incurable disease that destroys the patient s immune system. AIDS is
caused by infection with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)HIV is transmitted through the
exchange of bodily fluids.
People can become infected by HIV through sexual contact I was reading an article from last class
material where it says that rich people are the immune system of a person infected by HIV becomes
weaker over time, and the person is less able to fight off infections; this process can take months or
years. The final stage of HIV is the development of AIDS. As their immune

`` Hills Like White Elephants `` By Ernest Hemingway
In his short story Hills like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism and landscape subtly
but effectively to emphasize the tension between the main characters. The reader is asked to
extrapolate much of the information in an indirect fashion. The reader must look into the symbolism
and imagery used alongside the words the characters share and don t share. The natural landscape
covers almost the entire story, offering vivid images that contain a large amount of interpretive insight
into the story. The setting puts the couple at a crossroads, a stopping place in their journey through not
just Spain, but through their lives as well. Though the exact location of the train station is not given, it
is often thought to be in Zaragoza, Spain. The train station is a midpoint between their past time
together and the future time that they will move toward when they leave on a train. Train stations,
airports, bus stations, and ports give us a sense of transition, of being between worlds, and between
experiences. Placing the stage for the drama in such a locale really grabs the reader s attention and
drives further symbolism in the story. Joseph Urgo points this out in his writing quite well by stating
the junction where the train will stop in the story is not just the meeting of the Barcelona and Madrid
lines, but the clash of male and female sources of power and authority. (Urgo 36)
Hemingway stresses a few main elements of the story s setting. The oppressive heat,

Theme Of Coming Of Age In Catcher In The Rye
The main character of J.D. Salinger s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is only in his
teens, attending High School, yet longs for his early childhood. He can be seen trying to hold onto the
past by acting various ways. The author, meanwhile, uses symbolism to demonstrate the effects of a
loss of innocence, and the effects of coming of age. J.D. Salinger s novel The Catcher in the Rye
shows, through moderately relatable eyes, the changes and realities that we must all accept, and what
we must lose as we all come of age, taking a step into the adult world. Analyzing Holden s character
as for a biography, the reader will likely conclude that he acts no better than a hyperactive child; with
little in the way of understanding the fact that all actions come with consequences. There is what he
likes which seems to be little and what he dislikes which he often proceeds to call phony. His
vocabulary is limited, vernacular simple, phrases repetitious, and he frequently moves to tangents;
Holden acts as a child would. He has held onto what he perceives children doing, saying, thinking, and
has incorporated that into himself. This is not because he has yet to lose his innocence, but because he
feels he must hold on to what he believes he still has so that he may live a happy life. This is best seen
by the reader when Holden divulges into one of his previously mentioned tangents, which often take
on a more somber or aggressive tone towards something in the

  • 3. War Photographer Poem How is the theme of war portrayed through imagery in the poems Lament by Gillian Clarke and War Photographer by Carol Ann Duffy? Lament is written by Welsh poet Gillian Clarke, which is an elegy where she laments the loss of lives due to the Gulf War in 1991. Through the use of imagery and figurative language, the theme of war is portrayed violently and unpleasantly. Similarly, in Carol Ann Duffy s poem War Photographer, war is depicted through the description of developing photos that the photographer has taken, in which one of several will be chosen for the Sunday Supplement. This poem not only uses language and literary devices to reveal the consequences of conflict, but also through tone and atmosphere reflects the dismissive attitudes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the opening stanza of War Photographer, references to religion, light is red , church , priest , Mass , All flesh is grass , are very prominent and symbolic. The photographer is metaphorically described as a priest preparing to say Mass, with the names of countries in war instead of words of a service, and with the red light of the darkroom symbolizing the church tabernacle lamp. This metaphor reminds us of the transience of life, when one death can mean so little. Likewise in Lament, the repetition of For at the start of each verse brings a chanting like effect, which reflect religion and ritualism. The entire poem is almost like a song, a desolate tune of mourning for the lost lives. In addition, pulsing burden , also suggests a rhythmic and regular beat to the poem. This phrase in itself is a paradox, where pulsing represents energy and liveliness, whereas burden represents a weight and unpleasantness; it reflects the burden of war on the country, repressing animals and humans who try to ... • 4. The Love Song Of J Alfred Prufrock Analysis T.S. Eliot was born in 1888 and died in 1965. Eliot set new directions in poetry. His criticism provided new judgements to guide assessments of poetry. In Eliot s critical work on poets and poetry, he observed that the modern inclination is to put up with some degree of incoherence. So long as the verse sounds well and presents striking and melodious imagery. In an age like ours lacking common standards poets need to remind themselves that it is not sufficient to rely upon those gifts, which are native to them, and which they exercise with ease. That good poetry must exhibit several qualities in proportion of which one is good sense. (Eliot) Some other famous quotes are Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood. (Eliot) and finally Human kind cannot bear much reality. (Eliot) Eliot s poem The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a dramatic monologue. I think the poem s central themes include Prufrock s inability to act and his feelings of alienation. I think in the beginning T.S. Eliot may have chosen to present this epigraph in Italian because he wanted to keep his poem at a high intellectual level and assumed many of his readers would know Italian. The epigraph should alert to readers this poems sophistication, and should expect subtle literary devices and scholarly allusions. The first two lines feelings are of a lovely romantic evening. Then line 3 with the image of a sick etherized patient, dramatically alters it. The feelings the evening evokes are no longer lovely and romantic but dark and ominous. The metaphor developed in this stanza is a cat compared to smoke. Also compared to that of an evening etherized in line 3 they are alike because they both imply slow motion or paralysis. The effect of juxtaposing the actions of taking of a toast and tea and having time for visions and revisions is interesting since eating is a mundane activity, while having visions is a far more elevated one. The intellectual work of visions is trivialized by being placed on the same level as taking of a toast and tea. I think the character is fastidiously dressed and has thinning hair. Skinny arms and legs also. Indecisive and disillusioned. He lacks energy to pursue his goals and dreams. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Megan s Law Megan s Law Protection More Important than Privacy In 1994, twice convicted sex offender Jesse Timmendequas raped and murdered Megan Kanka, a seven year old girl who lived across the street. In reaction to this emotionally charged crime, Megan s home state of New Jersey ratified a community notification bill dubbed Megan s Law just three months later. This fall, a national version of the law went into effect, mandating that all fifty states notify citizens in writing of the presence of convicted sex offenders within their communities. Certainly, society has a responsibility to protect children from sex offenders, and many feel that Megan s Law is the best course of action. However, others feel that it is an unwarranted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The facts seem clear: if an individual commits a sex crime more than once, it is likely he or she will commit the same type of crime again. Furthermore, Megan s Law is capable of halting these destructive patterns of reoccurrence. Critics often argue that notification is a form of double jeopardy through which a criminal suffers punishment twice for the same crime. However, this is a gross misunderstanding of the law. The intent of the law is not to inflict additional harm on the offender. Rather, it is to provide a crucial service for the public. It is true that released sex offenders may be inconvenienced by Megan s Law, but this is merely a side effect of protecting our children and not a deliberate method of additional punishment. And let us think about the individuals who are adversely affected by Megan s Law, for it applies only to those individuals who have committed multiple acts of violent molestation. Thus, Megan s Law is aimed squarely at those who pose a clear and present danger to their community, and it directly and effectively reduces the chances that these select high risk individuals will harm children. Other critics argue that Megan s Law destroys the right to privacy of released criminals. However, as Americans, we are not endowed with an unconditional right to privacy. Roe v. Wade established that in certain cases privacy must be regarded as a right in matters such as marriage, procreation, child rearing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Rhetorical Analysis On Rocky Balboa Rocky Balboa Each person has the right to follow their dreams. Sometimes those dreams are fulfilled, but sometimes they are put on hold when life demands individuals to pursue something more practical. If an individual is willing to fight for what they want, anything is possible. As shown in Rocky Balboa, Rocky Balboa s desire is to continue boxing in the ring. The Commission Chair denies his request, due to his age, although he has passed all of the required tests. Rocky Balboa challenges his denial by appealing to the Commission Chair s logic, ethics, and emotion. During this session, Rocky effectively uses logos, ethos, and pathos to lead the Commission Chair to a decision allowing him to obtain his license to box again. This speech is effective in its portrayal that as long as one has done everything in their power to achieve their goals, that no one should have the power to stop them. Using logos in his speech, Balboa appeals to the logic of the Commission Chair by referring to the pursuit of happiness. When the Commission chair responds that they are looking out for Balboa s interests, (Eidenmuller) his rebuttal is that he has done everything in his power to obtain his license, yet he is still told No (Eidenmuller). (Eidenmuller) Everyone has had a time in their lives when someone has tried to tell them they could not do something they wanted to. • 7. Humor In The Princess Bride The Princess Bride captures the element of humor and witty comedy through effective characterization to bring out the true version of the fantasy involving the classic love stories in medieval kingdom setting. Firstly, from the onset, the film opens with hilarious comments from the grandson as the grandfather prepares to read the story. The grandson appears less enthusiastic to hear the narration, and seeks to know what exactly the story will unfold by remarking that if the fairytale will have scenes involving a lot of kissing. Falk in preemptive version alludes to the fact that obviously the story has eminent kissing and bounty of screaming Eels (Haase, 2007). This claim sets the tone for a true comedy delivered in quasi heroic epic fantasy version where the episodes transcend viewers emotional expectations in engaging humor scenes despite the enthralling swordfights and combats. The origin of Marijuana was written in the writing of the Chinese emperor Shen Nung. At this point in time 2737 B.C. it was used as a form of medicine until it spread to India where it was used recreationally. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classified marijuana along with heroin and LSD as a Schedule I drug, i.e., having the relatively highest abuse potential and no accepted medical use (Marijuana History. (n.d.)). This substance has been used in many different ways over the years. Medical Marijuana can be ingested by smoking it (pipe, rolling into a joint or cigarette, or by using a bong), vaporizing it, eating it, using it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When using the substance, it triggers these brain receptors which in turn triggers the effects that you get using the substance. Some of the effects that come with this are mild euphoria, alterations in vision and judgment result in distortions of time and space, acute intoxication that may occasionally induce visual hallucinations, anxiety, depression, extreme variability of mood, paranoid reactions, and psychoses lasting from four to six hours. Physical effects include reddening of the eyes, dryness of the mouth and throat, moderate increase in the rapidity of the heartbeat, tightness of the chest (if the drug is smoked), drowsiness, unsteadiness, and muscular incoordination (Pharmacology of Marijuana MassCann/NORML. (n.d.)). The brain does produce a TCH like substance that gives off a natural high without using any drugs whatsoever. But when using the substance this increases the THC levels in your body with overall gives you a chemically induced high. Using this substance often would be considered as chronic use. When using Marijuana daily it can effect your memory but it is because TCH stays in the body up to 48 hours after using the substance (Pharmacology of Marijuana MassCann/NORML. (n.d.)) , so if you do use it everyday you will eventually lose brain cells that ties to memory. • 10. Oedipus The Good Life Since ancient times, many have sought to the answer the philosophical question, What is the good life ? This is a question with no simple answer! For some individuals, the good life could mean living a life based on justice and rationality, or on faith and trust in the divine, or on the attainment of power, military, glory, and reputation. Their perspectives varied greatly depending upon their cultural values and contexts. Group I: Oedipus Oedipus Rex, written by Sophocles Group II: Socrates in the Apology (written by Plato) Parallels: i. Measuring Chirality At Ibuprofen Using A Homemade Polarimeter Measuring Chirality in Ibuprofen Using a Homemade Polarimeter Sydney Guerin December 9, 2016 May River High School Abstract For this project, I will be conducting multiple experiments regarding the chirality of different forms of ibuprofen. The question I m trying to solve is whether or not common brands of ibuprofen have the same formulation. In order to perform this exercise, I will need to create a homemade polarimeter in order to measure the angle at which the brands of ibuprofen will reflect light, resulting in finding out if the chosen brands have a varied rotation of light. I believe that the different brands will reflect at different angles based off of its chirality. After performing the tests, the results I have gathered led me to believe that my hypothesis was proven to be wrong. The Motrin, Advil, and Equate seemed to all get bright in the same areas. The only difference was that the Motrin was the brightest one out of them all. Often after a long legal battle, the victims are left with a worthless judgement and no recovery. One solution to avoid white collar crimes and shorten the lengthy time in locating and serving perpetrators with a judgement is by the use of biometrics techniques for identifying and verifying individuals. Biometrics are methods for recognizing a user based on his/her unique physiological and/or behavioural characteristics. These characteristics include fingerprints, speech, face, retina, iris, hand written signature, hand geometry, wrist veins, etc. Biometric systems are being commercially developed for a number of financial and securit applications. The United States has embraced the idea that things have changed and are willing to do whatever possible to prevent future events of this magnitude. Another characteristic that the Cold War Period and 9/11 hold in common is that both were a pervasive political and military competition that dominated international politics. There is no way for the United States to prevent future attacks on Americans without working as a coalition force with the other nations to identify, track, and eliminate terrorist networks around the world. The second paper, written by David Norris, focuses mainly on the history of Pentecostal women in ministry. He gave a brief mention to the emergence of Holiness women preachers, and then fast forwards to the Pentecostal movement. Because many of the people involved in the Pentecostal movement had once been a part of the Holiness movement, women were generally accepted as ministers. However, even here women were relegated to the margins. They took the broken, burnt out, run down churches that no one else wanted. Many times these women would revitalized a run down church only to step down, or be shunted aside, so a man could take over as pastor. According to Norris, at the founding of the UPCI nearly 22% of the licensed ministers were women. This number has steadily declined over the past 50 years until only 3% of the licensed ministers are women. Norris gives four possible reasons for this: 1. Because women did not learn how to theologically defend their position at the beginning of the movement, they do not know how now that the climate has changed to where they must defend their calling. 2. • 35. `` Hills Like White Elephants `` By Ernest Hemingway In his short story Hills like White Elephants, Ernest Hemingway uses symbolism and landscape subtly but effectively to emphasize the tension between the main characters. The reader is asked to extrapolate much of the information in an indirect fashion. The reader must look into the symbolism and imagery used alongside the words the characters share and don t share. The natural landscape covers almost the entire story, offering vivid images that contain a large amount of interpretive insight into the story. The setting puts the couple at a crossroads, a stopping place in their journey through not just Spain, but through their lives as well. Though the exact location of the train station is not given, it is often thought to be in Zaragoza, Spain. The train station is a midpoint between their past time together and the future time that they will move toward when they leave on a train. Train stations, airports, bus stations, and ports give us a sense of transition, of being between worlds, and between experiences. • 36. Theme Of Coming Of Age In Catcher In The Rye The main character of J.D. Salinger s novel The Catcher in the Rye shows, through moderately relatable eyes, the changes and realities that we must all accept, and what we must lose as we all come of age, taking a step into the adult world. Analyzing Holden s character as for a biography, the reader will likely conclude that he acts no better than a hyperactive child; with little in the way of understanding the fact that all actions come with consequences. There is what he likes which seems to be little and what he dislikes which he often proceeds to call phony. His vocabulary is limited, vernacular simple, phrases repetitious, and he frequently moves to tangents; Holden acts as a child would. He has held onto what he perceives children doing, saying, thinking, and has incorporated that into himself. This is not because he has yet to lose his innocence, but because he feels he must hold on to what he believes he still has so that he may live a happy life. This is best seen by the reader when Holden divulges into one of his previously mentioned tangents, which often take on a more somber or aggressive tone towards something in the ...
