The Thief In J. R. Tolkien s The Lord Of The Rings
I will be applying this criteria to Gandalf, a wizard in the series The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R
Tolkien. Despite not having wounds in his hands, feet, side and head Gandalf did sacrifice himself
for the good of his friends when he battled Balrog, a fire demon, ultimately perishing but later
rising from the dead as a pure white wizard rather than his previous gray form. Furthermore,
Gandalfis good with children as he not only is in charge of 4 children throughout his journey but
he is also known amongst other smaller children as the wizard with fireworks and great stories.
Gandalf is always seen on horseback or on foot through his travels and despite not being able to
walk on water he continuously used his wizard like power to perform miracles.

Frida the movie was released in 2002 and directed by Julie Taymor. The cast included Salma
Hayek as (Frida), Alfred Molina as (Diego Rivera), Ashley Judd, Antonio Banderas, Edward
Norton, Mia Maestro, and Geoffrey Rush. The film is a biography of the life of Mexican artist
Frida Kahlo. She is a woman who came from a very simple background. Kahlo rose to fame as an
artist with an unique vision for her craft. She endured a difficult relationship with her husband
/mentor Diego Rivera. Many of her paintings are based on her experiences in life. She is also an
artist who from the opinion of many, painted from her soul. Director Julie Taymorwas able to
capture and visually show us the life of Fridaby using creative and dynamic angles to bring Frida s
paintings to life.
Frida s rise to success was defined by the challenges she faced throughout her life. She had this
sense of durability, strength and resilience. She was rude, bold and also smoked and drank like
the men around her. At first Frida painted what she felt, but it wasn t for anyone to see or to be
sold. She would paint it and express every tragedy that affected her. In my opinion, her rise began
once she witnessed her husband having and affair with her sister. It hurt her so much inside the
only way to describe how she felt and let it out was she had to paint it. After that, she went on her
own and continued painting her pain. Through out her life she went through many hardships that
caused her pain internally.

Good People, by David Foster Wallace Essay
David Foster Wallace s Good People, is a very touching, powerful story about a young, unwed,
Christian couple facing an extremely difficult decision and the moral and religious implications
that may result. As the story begins, we are allowed into the head of Lane Dean, a college student,
as he sits on a park bench with his girlfriend, Sheri. Lane and Sheri find themselves faced with an

When Wallace writes ...the air suffused with honeysuckle and lilacs both, which was almost too
much (1) readers can literally almost catch a whiff of the honeysuckle and lilacs in the air.
Wallace s precise and purposeful style of language allows us to get a true feeling for Lane, our
protagonist, and the terror, desperation and nervousness he feels in making a horribly difficult
decision. He hated himself for sitting so frozen. He could almost visualize himself tiptoeing past
something explosive. A big stupid looking tiptoe, like in a cartoon. The whole last black week had
been this way and it was wrong (1) portrays the sheer terror and desperation that Lane is feeling.
Wallace tells this story from a limited omniscience point of view, only allowing us into Lane s
head. This point of view complements Lane s character as well as the tone of this story as it
helps to set the frightened and worried mood of the story as it permits us, as readers, to
experience the inner conflict and desperation that Lane is feeling. The setting, in my opinion,
has hints of foreshadowing that work nicely with Lane s inner conflict. When Wallace writes
[t]hey were up on a picnic table at that park by the lake, by the edge of the lake... (1) the word
edge prompts a feeling that the story is on the verge of change. When Wallace writes of springtime

The Black Power Movement took place during the 1950 s into the early 60 s. The point of the
movement was to achieve civil rights for African Americans. Martin Luther King was a major
influence during the early stages of the movement. Many people turned to the Black Panthers,
founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, because they felt that nonviolence was not the
answer to achieving civil rights. The Black Power Movement unsuccessfully tried to change the
economic and social inequalities of blacks, because today many blacks are still treated socially
