Questions On The Doctrine Of Discovery Essay
Thomas Berumen
AIS 304
Professor Harjo
October 18, 2016
AIS 304 Midterm
1.
The Doctrine of Discovery was a concept used to further colonization and strip land from the
indigenous people. According to Class 7 Lecture, it allowed colonial powers to colonize the land that
they discovered even if indigenous people already lived there. The doctrine provides title to the nation
making the discovery of the land even if the soil is inhabited by natives. Provided the land excluded
European sovereign . When European powers establish rule in what is now the United States the
government was given the ownership of the lands until they felt the need use of the land. The Indians
currently residing in the lands were just inhabitants. The doctrine set for by Chief Justice Marshall was
set forth to mimic colonial powers and prevent further European expansion on U.S. soils. Following
the Johnson v McIntosh case, it established a preventive measure of Indians and Indian tribes from
selling the land to anyone but the United States government. This was to prevent European colonies to
develop in the United States.
The doctrine was important for the development and expansion of colonial powers, but the
implementation was a negative effect by forcefully taking lands from the indigenous. It disowned the
culture and lifestyles of millions. Rationally it is a shame that the government chose to deny aboriginal
title owners as they should have been allowed to keep their land. I agree in the decision

The Most Complex Organs Of The Human Body
The eye is one of the most complex organs of the human body. In the human eye, three layers can be
distinguished.
The outer region consists of the cornea and the sclera [4]. The cornea refracts and transmits the light
to the lens and the retina and protects the eye against infection and structural damage to the deeper
parts. The sclera is a thick, opaque white tissue that covers 95% of the surface area of the eye. The
sclera forms a connective tissue coat that protects the eye from internal and external forces and
maintains its shape. The cornea and the sclera are connected at the limbus. The visible part of the
sclera is covered by a transparent mucous membrane, the conjunctiva.
The middle layer of the eye is composed of the iris, the ciliary body ... Show more content on

The iris controls the size of the pupil, and thus the amount of light reaching the retina; the ciliary body
controls the power and shape of the lens and is the site of aqueous production; and the choroid is a
vascular layer that provides oxygen and nutrients to the outer retinal layers.
The inner layer of the eye is the retina [4], a complex, layered structure of neurons that capture and
process light. The surrounding sclera and cornea help to protect retina and keep it in the appropriate
position.
There are six major classes in neural retina: photoreceptors, bipolar cells, horizontal cells, amacrine
cells and ganglion cells, which capture and process light signals; and the Mullerian glia, which act as
the organizational backbone of the neural retina.
The three transparent structures surrounded by the ocular layers are called the aqueous, the vitreous

Unemployment Of The Australian Economy
In the Australian economy, trending unemployment rates are a prevailing socio economic issue. With
the labour market central to unemployment and the distribution of jobs, many factors arise as the key
influences on unemployment. With an incredible number of industries facing high demand by
consumers, it is speculated that employment would feature an increase to compensate. However, many
factors of the labour market contradict this and instead increase unemployment. Factors such as the
level of economic growth, technological changes, trends in productivity and the trends in inadequate
education have adverse effects on how unemployment increases and decreases. Unemployment
Overview Unemployment in the Australian economy is defined as the state of involuntary idleness of
work, and the rate of such. An extremely complex, it is often segregated into four key demographics
for analysis: national, state, youth and mature. Each of these four demographics feature varying trends
and are consistently affected by different factors of the labour market. Causes of Unemployment The
trend in unemployment within the Australian economy has swayed significantly in the past 30 years.
As of current, the national unemployment rate has been established at 5.8%, after an unexpected
downturn from 6% in February of 2016 ( Australia Unemployment Rate | 1978 2016 ). Over the past
30 years, the trend of national unemployment has been a downward drop, steadily moving from an
approximate 8.2% in 1976 to

Memoirs Of A Geisha Thesis
Memoirs of a Geisha is based off of a true story of a famous Geisha during WWII. The movie starts
when Sayuri was sold into an okiya and ends in her adulthood. Reflecting on the historical aspects of
the movie, it seems to have done well staying accurate. For example: the importance of okiyas, change
caused by the war, and the architectural styles seen in the movie work well for that time. One thing the
movie accurately describes in relation to AP World History is textiles (trade) specifically with the
material used for making kimono. Many times the importance of kimono is expressed in the movie as
it helps show the worth of geisha and maiko. Making kimono was labor intensive back then and quite
expensive depending on its quality, material and purpose. In the movie, making kimono seemed to be

her way to find a danna. Mameha on the other hand was the perfect geisha as she completely
submerged herself into that lifestyle. She was kind, talented, and successful with a rich danna who she

great examples of geisha when they were forced to face the war closer to home. Many geisha had to

survive. They were both lucky to have been able to survive and experience some sort of resemblance

The Power Of Fate In Oedipus The King
Sophocles states that Fate has terrible power. You cannot escape it by wealth or war. No fort will keep
it out, no ships outrun it. Fate derives from a Latin word, fatum, meaning that one s future is
predetermined. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles unfolds the misfortune of a noble king who searches for
knowledge. Evidently, Greek heroes like Oedipus are destined to rule, but are also bound to fall,
therefore, he cannot alter his own fate. This tragic play proves that the power of fate is indeed stronger
than one s free will. Despite his attempts to fight his destiny, Oedipus can never outrun his fate.
Regardless of his parents desperation to evade the predicted outcome, fate guides his journey for
knowledge, leading to his destruction. Oedipus rises as a hero, but eventually loses his power when he
faithfully commits to terrible deeds. Jocasta, the wife and mother to Oedipus, doubts that the oracle of
Apollo is genuine. Since she and her previous husband, King Laius, left Oedipus to die in the
mountains, they refuse to believe the oracle. She claims that ..It was fate that he should die a victim at
the hands of his own son, a son to be born of Laius and me. But, see now, he, the king, was killed by
foreign highway robbers at a place where three roads meet (Sophocles, 493: 791 796). Despite Jocasta
and Laius s intentions to change their fate, the prophecy remains unfeigned. The fact that Oedipus is
alive even after being abandoned, is evidence that their fates are

Oishi s Dichotomy
The dichotomy between the Chrysanthemum and the Sword is one that embodied the delicate balance
of both the life and death that make up the whole of a samurai s life. On one hand the life of a samurai
is a way of a warrior. It is a path that embodies death and utter destruction of any enemy or obstacle
that come in their way and as long as it is honorable any level of brutality is acceptable. To be a
samurai is to hope to die by the sword and yet on the other hand being able to understand the world of
the beauty of the world around them is one of their duties. In the same way the stroke of a sword can

The Effectiveness Of Measuring Clients For Proper Assessment
The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of measuring clients for proper assessment
through the use of various formal instruments that may include symptom checklists, personality
assessment, or other diagnostic instrument. The population of people this paper will explore are those
who are or have been victims of domestic violence. It will further examine the purpose of this formal
assessment instrument and the benefits it will have in counseling. The population I am interested in
providing services for are women of Domestic Violence. In addition to examining and treating victims
of domestic violence, I would like to assess the effects of maltreatment and how it is interwoven into
the fabric of Post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD). Nonetheless, this epidemic affects all individuals
regardless of their community, age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or
nationality. Similarly, this type of abuse is associated with emotionally abusive and controlling
behavior as well, that may or may not demonstrate a pattern of dominance and control

cases, even death. The devastating physical, emotional, and psychological consequences of domestic
violence can cross generations, and in some individuals last for a lifetime if it goes untreated

demand for online art schools have increased dramatically and many universities now offer various

cons that you must take into consideration before you make your finial decision. One of the biggest
draws for online degrees in any field is that you can obtain it without leaving your home. No more

disciple to perform the required work on my own? When learning from home, it is easy to let the
freedom take over and you begin to lax on your studies. In order to be successful, you must be

Compare And Contrast Judaism And Monotheism
Pharisees: spiritual grandparents of rabbinic Judaism. They believed that God controlled all things, yet
decisions made by individuals also contributed to the course of a person s life. Also, they believed in
the resurrection and the award/punishment in the afterlife notion.
Reform Judaism: the more liberal, progressive, modern thinking sect of Jews. The reformers began by
reforming the prayer service to bring it into line with Western sensibilities. They also began to
reexamine the underpinnings of Judaism, the meaning of the Torah, reward and punishment of the
afterlife, the meaning end of time, and the role of Jews in the integrated world. Reform Judaism wants
to more tolerant of non Jewish religions as well.
Monotheism: this means the belief that there is only one God. Monotheism is present within all three
Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Monotheism should be a source of unity for
all three of the Abrahamic religions. It should provide an opportunity to unite among all three

Analysis Of The Horizontal Word By Debra Marquart
The Horizontal Word, written by Debra Marquart, was a memoir to North Dakota and the Midwest
where she states, The Midwest is a place that s been considered devoid of stories, a flyover region one
must endure to get to more interesting places (Marquart 31). In her memoir to the Midwest, she gives
descriptive views that many Americans have surrounding the Midwest. Marquart also gives a
description of the Midwest s history and even how many people overlooked the Midwest as they
declared the region a dreary plain, wholly unfit for cultivation, and, of course, uninhabitable by people
depending upon agriculture for subsistence (Marquart 39). Debra Marquart expands off the idea of
how the Midwest was overlooked by including her grandparents views as they that were immigrants
from Russia. They saw the Midwest as a new opportunity of life and they were excited to receive their
allotments of land (Marquart 73). In Debra Marquart s memoir, The Horizontal Word, she utilizes
hasty generalizations to outline the stereotypes of the Midwest, and she also incorporates allusions to
give outsiders a clear picture of this portion of the United States.
Marquart incorporates hasty generalizations in her memoir to display the views that Americans have
surrounding the Midwest. Marquart states where all the women are strong, all the men are good
looking, and all the children are above average (Marquart 27). She is utilizing hasty generalizations to
display the stereotypes that surround the Midwest. By Marquart stating where all the women are
strong she is display hasty generalizations as not every woman who is from the Midwest is strong
(Marquart). She also exhibits hasty generalizations when she incorporates all the men are good
looking, and all the children are above average (Marquart). When she utilizes the word all this makes
this hasty generalization as not all men in the Midwest are handsome and not every child is above
average. Marquart also utilizes hasty generalization when she incorporates TV news anchors hail from
this part of the world, as do the most innocent female characters in movies and prime time TV dramas.

The Arms Race and How it Changed the United States of America
The Evil Empire that is what, at the height of the arms race, United States President Ronald Reagan
called the Soviet Union (Rudolph 1). Unsurprisingly, the Soviet Union was similarly upset at the
United States. This anger is what fueled the arms race. During the Cold War, due to fears of nuclear
attack, the US and Soviet Union designed and deployed thousands of nuclear warheads, each hoping
to deter the other from nuclear launch with threat of counter attack (O Neal 1). This massive arms
buildup, however, had many negative effects on the US. To recognize the impact that the arms race
continues to have on today, it is crucial to understand not only its causes, but also its immediate
impacts on the US economy, society, foreign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This preparation took the form of an arms race. The arms race was a competitive acquisition of
weapons by the Soviet Union and the United States. (Boilard 1). The strategy behind the arms race
was to amass more nuclear weapons than the opponent, thus enabling them to win any future nuclear
war. It was assumed that if nuclear war happened, then the country with the most nuclear weapons
would destroy more of the other country, consequently winning the war (Boilard 1). Under this
strategy, the Soviet Union built about 45,000 nuclear warheads, and obtained enough radioactive
materials to triple that. The Soviet Union also placed tactical missile sites in many countries from
Cuba to Kazakhstan, hoping to be able to perform a fast strike from close range if necessary (O Neal
1). Likewise, the US placed missiles in Europe and started the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI)
program. The SDI program was meant to defend against a nuclear attack. The SDI program included
satellites with lasers and nuclear powered railguns, which would ideally be able to shoot down
approaching missiles long before they reached their target. The SDI program was also referred to as
Star Wars because its use of lasers in space made it seem like science fiction. Furthermore, the price,
amount of electricity needed to power these weapons, and amount of research needed was so great that
the project was abandoned several billion dollars later (Rudolph 2). In essence, the

This could be explained by his earlier educational life as a science student at Cornell University and
his interests in science fictions. Even though Vonnegut was supportive of talking of the contributions
of technology in the modern life, he was not quick to embrace technology in his literary works. For
instance, he typed his essays and stories on a typewriter rather than a computer; he always relied on
the U.S. Postal Service rather than e mail; and he warned repeatedly of the dangers of technological
advancement, (Farrell, p.ix) His dissenting views on technological advancement are illustrated in his
literary works like Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Welcome to the Monkey House
which depict how humans can face serious problems associated with population explosion if all the
infectious diseases are eradicated. In the Player Piano, he explains how human labor will be taken by
machines, creating a condition of extensive joblessness and helplessness in the modern world. Also, in
Cat s Cradle, he talks of the detriments of technological advances in military science, which could
lead to the creation of deadly weapons such as ice nine or neutron bomb which destroyed Midland

The Nature of Gladiator Fights Essay
The Nature of Gladiator Fights
The Gladiatorial fights were noble in some ways, but in others seem to have the characteristics of the
lowest form of entertainment. Gladiators were considered to fight with pride, they honoured their
Gods with sacrifices and prayer for victory and they honoured their traditions and heritage, often
being armed in weapons and armour, and having fighting styles originating from their country of

a person struggling with the various conflicts and problems in his life. The fame, together with the
luxury the gladiators experienced when not training or fighting adds to the general feeling of nobility.
I suppose its this outward nobility, together with the objective of the Gladiatorial fights to reduce
aggression within the general public, that made the fights seem morally and ethically acceptable to the
Roman masses. Anyway, the Gladiator fights would be held immediately after the midday executions;
the Romans would at this point be more interested in skill and prize than blood.
I suppose the Gladiatorial fights were somewhat a trademark of the Roman Empire and indeed Roman
Civilisation. I expect that this has something to do with the fact that Rome was built upon bloody
conquest, and the Gladiatorial fights amplify both bloody conquest and indeed a noble luxurious life.
There was also an aim for all Gladiators, that turned savage blood lust entertainment into an
acceptable tournament of the highest calibre; gladiators could be given the wooden sword,
symbolising freedom; the fact that the Gladiators are working for a goal, rather than just killing each

The argument that there is a tradeoff existing between membership and effectiveness in international
organizations is empirically correct. Larger international organizations tend to have lower levels of
cooperation between member states, because of member states more focusing on their own
sovereignty than work with other states. Examples of this problem happening in the international
system can be seen with the European Union, The United Nations, and the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization. These three IGOs all suffer from the same issue, they have over expanded and this
created an issue of compliance from member states of these IGOs.
The European Union is a regional IGO located in Europe founded in 1993 in Maastricht, Netherlands.
The EU s main priorities are political and financial. The European Union began with six different
member states, now it currently has over 28 member states from all over the continent. The European
Union has become so large that they have their own currency and legal system. The European Union
started from various different attempts of European integration after the Second World War ended.
Europe did this in order to stop further issues of nationalism and to reestablish the financial power of
the larger European states. The first of these attempts was the creation of the European Coal and Steel
Community (ECSC) in May 1950. French foreign minister Robert Schuman proposed

Gattac A Futuristic And Dystopian Society
Dystopia is defined as a futuristic, imaginary universe in which oppressive societal control and the
illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral or
totalitarian control. Dystopias, though an exaggerated worst case scenario, making a critical and
current trend, societal norm, or political system. The films I have chosen to analyze Snowpiercer
directed by Joon Ho Bong, Gattaca directed by Andrew Niccol both are movies that show this genre of
a futuristic and dystopian society. Snowpiercer and Gattaca show conventions that convey this genre
through a dystopian protagonist who standing up against a higher power, restrictions upon freedom
and inequality(discrimination) in Gattaca the protagonist Vincent stands up to the labels of valids and
invalids and the discrimination between the two labels in order to achieve his dreams, even though he
commits identity fraud. Whereas others conforms to; their DNA as a way to live their lives. In
Snowpiercer The movie takes place aboard the globe spanning Snowpiercer train which holds the last
remnants of humanity after an attempt at climate engineering in order to stop global warming has
unintentionally created a new ice age. Curtis Everett a member of the lower class passengers who have
been place in the tail section, leads a revolution against the elites in the front of the train in order to get

Relation Between Stock Returns And Economic Growth
Many investors when making a decision regarding investing in a other country take into account
certain factors which may play a very important role or may affect their future returns. Standard
economics theory suggests that over the long run, profits or returns should rise in line with the
economy/ economic growth, which is also the view point of many investors when making a decision.
Although the long run research and studies conducted by different economists gives a very different
picture of the relationship between stock returns and economic growth, but very little empirical
evidences to support the view with. Many economists and researchers supported the view that, stock
returns and economic growth does not have a positive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jay.R Ritter in his research said that the main reason for a negative correlation between the two
factors, according to him during high growth rate periods markets usually assign a high price/Earning
and price to dividend multiples and which then lowers the realized returns because now more capital
is required from the investors to in order to receive the same level of earning s and dividends from
stocks.
From all these studies and empirical evidence it can be concluded that stock returns and economic
growth are not related but have a negative correlation.
Ho= no correlation between economic growth and stock return.
H1= there is a relation between economic growth and stock returns
On the other hand the results for interest rates give the same type of results. The basic classical
economics model suggests that there is a relationship between interest rates and economic growth.
Usually reduction in the interest rates cause the level of growth to increase, this is because a reduction
in interest rates makes borrowing more cheaper and encourages in investment in the economy, which
eventually increases the growth rate. However, an increase in interest rates has an opposite effect on
economic growth. According to (Suntum, 2008) high interest rated discourage investment as it s more
tempting to rather save the money and earn a decent interest rate, thus making the aggregate demand
to fall which then badly affects the economic growth of

Feminism In Sarah Waters Affinity Extract
Throughout this essay I will be closely analysing how feminism plays an exceedingly prominent role
in Sarah Waters Affinity extract. Feminism refers to the advocacy of women s rights and the
inclination of equality, both of which are controversial and arguable throughout the reading. I will not
only be evaluating how women are treated by men but take notice to how the women in the extract
react to the disrespect. The powerful gender role of the man was particularity profane as I will talk in
more detail about later on.
Feminism comes into view early on in the extract when we are introduced to Miss Isherwood who
seems to be distraught as she burst out weeping (Waters, page 260) in the narrator s company. She is

The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy Essay
The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy wrote the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge in 1886. Two of the main characters,
Donald Farfrae and Michael Henchard have a contrast in luck and Hardy uses characterisation,
language, historical and social background and a craft in the structure of his novel to help bring across
this point. During this essay I am going to comment upon how Hardy does this and further consider
the view that, Farfrae s good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck.
Throughout the novel there are many examples of Farfrae s good fortune resulting in Henchard s ill
luck. One of the most important examples in the book is when Henchard and Farfrae both gamble on
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of these types of characterisation link in with Farfrae s good fortune and Henchard s ill luck.
Hardy creates Henchard not as an evil man but more of tragic hero. This is a person with a fatal flaw.
Henchard s main flaw is his temper. This first adds to his ill luck right at the start of the novel when he
sells Susan and his daughter in a drunken angry state. Even though this does not directly link in with
Farfrae s good fortune (as he is not present in the start of the novel) it does later on in the novel when
the furmity seller arrives back and tells the court of Henchard s secret. When Henchard admits to what
is being said by the old women all respect is lost for him and he looses his role of town mayor. When
Farfrae finally becomes mayor near the end of the novel (after the mayor after Henchard dies) his
good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck which is the result of his fatal flaw. Hardy also uses fate
against Henchard throughout the whole novel. An example of this is when Henchard and Farfrae both
hold a dance for the townspeople. Farfrae has his in a barn whereas Henchard s is out in the open.
When it rains on the night of the dance everyone turns out to Farfrae s even Susan and Elizabeth Jane.
This leads to Farfrae s popularity rising and Henchard s to carry on decreasing (as the dance was a

Polyvinyl Chloride
Today, there are many instruments all around us. All the way from guitars to the stylophone, many of
which take advantage of pressure waves through pipes in order to produce sound. As a percussionist, I
have had seven years of personal experience with most of those years being on the xylophone and
vibraphone, so when I first discovered PVC instruments over the Summer, I was hooked on the idea,
and because polyvinyl chloride is cheap, it is a great choice for the creation of homemade instruments.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is sometimes referred to as a synthetic resin, subclassified into
thermosetting and thermoplastic resins. PVC is a thermoplastic resin, which means that heating the
material will cause it to re soften and become moldable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a PVC instrument, practically the opposite occurs, as when the open end of the tube is struck by the
beater, a pocket of high pressure air is sent through the tube, resonating it at the frequency that is
determined by its length as well as the width of the openings (the diameter of the inside of the tube),
which gives the instrument the properties of a Helmholtz resonator (Johnson). A Helmholtz resonator
is a container of gas with an open hole that operates when A volume of air ... vibrates because of the
springiness of the air inside with a common example being blowing on the neck of a bottle in order to
produce a sound (McLennan). Resonance, which is produced by oscillating air, is a phenomenon that
occurs when the frequency of a vibration forced on an object matches the object s natural frequency
and a dramatic increase in amplitude occurs (Hewitt 521). Resonance causes the tubes of varying
lengths to produce different pitches. Tubes used in musical instruments are either open at one end, or
open at both (excluding the rain stick), which allows for nodes and antinodes to form within the tube.
Nodes are pivot points on

Homosexual Equality In Australia
Homosextual people (someone who is attracted to the same gender as their own eg. gay or lesbian)
have constantly faced discrimination by both the state and society. Through the movement to equality,
more recent generations have strived to create an environment where homosexual people have more
rights than they have had previously. Although globally homosexuality has become relatively
accepted, there are still many ways in which discrimination and intolerance negatively impact gay and
lesbian lives.
In the past fifty years the movement towards homosextual heterosextual equality has resulted in a

The House Of The Spirits By Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942 in Lima, Peru. Her father, TomУЁs Allende, was first
cousin of Salvador Allende, President of Chile from 1970 to 1973. She is a Chilean American writer
whose works contain mostly magic realism, which incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into
otherwise realistic fiction. Allende has been called the world s most widely read Spanish language
author . She uses experiences from her Chilean childhood and the political situation in Chile to write
her most famous book, The House of the Spirits.
Isabel Allende had many family difficulties that altogether resulted in her being one of the most
successful female writers in history. Allende was born to TomУЁs and Francisca who divorced when
Isabel was three. (McCann). As a result of the divorce, Francisca and Isabel moved to Santiago to her
grandparents house where she spent her childhood. Her grandmother s interest in fortune telling and
astrology (the study of the influence of the stars on human behavior), as well as the stories she told,
made a lasting impression on Allende. (McCann). This impression influenced Isabel to start reading
and writing. Following the months after her uncle Salvador Allende s assassination, Isabel realized it
was getting exceedingly dangerous for her family to live in Chile. Therefore, Isabel fled to Venezuela
along with her husband and kids in 1973. (McCann) After moving to Venezuela she started writing her

Analysis Of Girl By Jamaica Kincaid
Society has created in their minds the way a woman is supposed to act and the things they are allowed
to do. In Jamaica Kincaid s Girl , we see a young woman being forced to live by the likeness of the
society in which she dwells. Although this is not the life she wants to live, she has no other choice
than to become the woman she was made to be.
Throughout time the relationship between mothers and daughters have changed. Many mothers hold
on to the old fashioned opinion of what a woman should be and many older women feel that a women
s true role in life is to be domesticated. This idea of a woman s place in the home is being reinforced
throughout Kincaid s short story. The mother in the story is telling her young daughter the ways things
should be done. Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the colored
clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry. She further goes on to describe other
household chores and how they should be correctly done. This is how you sweep a corner. She tells
her daughter how to set a table for different meals, how to cook things, and even how to pick out
bread. Unfortunately, though, the story doesn t tell a woman how to have a successful career, to go to
college, or how to work outside of the home. In those days women were expected to stay at home
while their husband s go out to work and make all the money. Even if they tried, they were not
allowed to go outside the way society made them to be and this mother is trying to raise her young
daughter the same way she was raised which is to be a house wife.
Even though the girl says nothing in the story, she is building resentment towards her mother because
she feels that she should be allowed to make her own decision on whether to be domesticated.
Throughout the story never did the mother once stop to get her daughter s input on the issues, she just
simply tells her daughter that she has no other choice but to be domesticated and there is no way of
changing it. She tells the daughter how to act, how to dress, how to talk, and even how to walk.

Shakespeare was the one to write his own plays, or if he had someone else write them for him. There
are numerous amounts of arguments agreeing that Shakespeare wrote his plays, and then there are
numerous amounts disagreeing with his penmanship of his plays. According to some sources,
Shakespeare was an impractical choice to write such famous works of art due to his lack of traveling,

Structural approaches may also be necessary to protect coastal areas. Preparedness includes the
education of populations. People need to know the dangers and what they can do to avoid them. In
Florida, evacuation routes have been prepared and cyclone shelters are clearly signed and posted.
Planning includes land use planning. This regulation is used to reduce the vulnerability of people and
property so for example, only low value land uses (recreational) can occupy coastal strips, the areas
most vulnerable to a storm. In Northeast Florida, coastal properties have been rallied above the ground
on stilts and have non residential functions on the ground (storage). This means that hazards like the
storm surges do not impact the people and less damage occurs to infrastructure. Warning systems put
in place to predict incoming storms inform the public about them. This is linked with the effectiveness
of the government and how developed the country is. A less developed country is less likely to have
the money to be able to afford such technology and equipment meaning that no matter what form of
planning or preparedness occurs, mitigation is less likely to be achieved. More developed countries
have the money to install advanced technology and equipment to ensure that their population can be
warned meaning that lives can be saved. In late August 2005, Hurricane Katrina swept onto the coast

Satan is working in the life of a man that married his father s wife (incest, v.1). When Satan brings a
person down, he is not satisfied in stopping there but goes about to bring as much destruction as
possible. In the Corinthian church, he is working with the church members, as they seem to accept this
sin, rather than excommunicate him from the church. Though Biblical, most churches today do not
practice church discipline. The Apostle Paul, though not there in body, but present in ... Show more

He and his devils are very active in the lives of Muhammad followers, Masons, Satanists, Jehovah
Witnesses, Catholics, and many other gods. In America Christian freedom, rights and liberties are
constantly under attack and being taken away, yet we are to stand and guard against devils not only in
America but around the world. Christians are being slaughtered for their stand. When there are
shootings in our schools, churches, and public places, it is the Christians being sought out. Babies are
being killed in record numbers by doctors in abortion clinics with laws backing this practice, with
women saying they have a right to their bodies and their babies have no right to life. A right is
something not wrong, and while they may have the liberty, they do not have the right to take lives.
Everywhere you turn you can see devils working in the lives of mankind. Christians are to stand
against devils by putting on the whole armour of God, to be strong in the Lord, not weaklings or
babies, but soldiers of the Lord. Folks are to

Lizzie Borden Murder
The Murders in Fall River
On August 4, 1892 at 92 Second Street in Fall River Massachusetts, stepmom Abby and father,
Andrew Borden were slaughtered by an axe in their home ( The Trial of Lizzie Borden ). Lizzie s
biological mother died in 1862, and her father Andrew remarried the spinstress, Abby Durfee Gray.
Since it was a stepmother to be murdered, it raised the question as to if Lizzie really liked her
stepmother. Abby s body was in the guest room, murdered an hour before Andrew, who was on a sofa.
Lizzie, their daughter, was first suspected then convicted based on the evidence. A year later she was
pronounced innocent. What really happened will remain a mystery because someone s word on what
happened could easily be altered and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Three days later, on August 9th, Lizzie started to be questioned in the courtroom over police
headquarters. During the first four hours of the examination Lizzie gave confusing and contradicting
information pertaining to where she was and what she was doing. Two days later, on August 11th,
Lizzie was read her rights and arrested by Chief Hillard for the murder of her parents. The following
day Lizzie made a plea of not guilty to the charges against her before being transported by rail car to a
jail located in Taunton, an area located eight miles from Fall River. August 22nd Lizzie was returned
to the Fall River courtroom for her preliminary hearing, after a criminal complaint has been filed by
the prosecutor, next is to determine whether there is enough evidence to require a trial. At the end of
the hearing, Judge Josiah Blaisdell pronounced Lizzie as probably guilty and ordered her to face a
grand jury. From November 15th to the 21st Lizzie faced the grand jury to plead not guilty. It wasn t
until December first, that a testimony was made against Lizzie by a friend of the families. Alex
Russell appeared before the grand jury to make his statement about the blue dress he saw Lizzie burn.
Lizzie responded with the fact that the dress was covered in old paint. The question then is, why was
she burning it the day of the murders? The statement from Russell matched with an earlier testimony
made by Bridget, she claimed Lizzie was wearing a blue dress the morning of the murders. Since both
testimonies matched, it was enough evidence to convince the jury to indict, formally accuse of or
charge with a serious crime, Lizzie for the murder of her parents. On June 5th, 1893 Andrew Jennings
and George Robinson represented the defendant while Knowlton and Thomas Moody argued the case
of the prosecution. Moody opened the case with a two hour long speech while

Video Game Violence
Media and Video Game Violence and the Systematic Desensitization of Children
Violence in media is not a recent development. Prior to television, citizens across the country glued
themselves to the radio listening to the broadcast of popular crime dramas. Before radio, books and
newsprint fulfilled society s craving for dramatic violence. Prior to the days of technology, live stage
performances served to sate man s desire for thrills. With the recent advent of technology along with
an ever increasing human desire for blood pumping entertainment, children now are much more
exposed to media violence than ever before. Gauthier, Zuromski and Gitter write, Media coverage of
violent killings (e.g., the Columbine High School shooting in 1999) has cited the potential role of
violent media exposure in fostering aggressive behavior, especially because some of the perpetrators
have a history of violent media consumption (513). Children spend hours on end watching television
shows and movies filled with violence or playing video games where they can play the role of a
character and act out the violence themselves. This can lead to children eventually playing out these
fantasies in real life or, more likely, not reacting humanely in the face of violence. Overindulged by
the violence in media and video games, children are losing the capacity for compassion and
developing the capacity to harm others without feeling guilt for their actions. To help curb these
harmful effects,

Corporate Credit And Risk Management
On the other hand, Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, prefers to describe credit default
swaps in terms of risk management. He says, Because we had this risk, because we were accumulating
positions...we have to go out ourselves and provide and source the other side of the transactions, so
that we can manage our risk. Although, that is simply a technical way of stating that they need to get
even action on both sides of the bet, just like a bookmaker; but, on Wall Street they are known as
market makers. Luckily, there are some on Capitol Hill who are willing to address these similarities.
You all are the house, you re the bookie. (Your clients) are booking their bets with you. I don t know
why we need to dress it up. It s a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If he can t do it, how does any investor reasonably think they can do otherwise?
With all that said, derivatives are not inherently dangerous with the proper conditions in place as many
non financial companies buy derivatives in a responsible manner as a hedge for their business
expenses. For example, an airline can hedge against rising oil prices or a multinational manufacturing
corporation might hedge against a currency change with derivatives. In these instances, derivatives
actually reduce systemic risk. In fact, even Warren Buffett uses them to some degree. However, it s a
potentially disastrous situation when Wall Street goes far beyond simply hedging risk and that is
exactly what has happened. Moral hazard has ensued as the major banks don t have an incentive to
hedge their bets conservatively because they ve been branded too big to fail. Thus, the unregulated
credit default swap market alone had grown to $42.6 trillion by 2007, roughly the household wealth of
the U.S. It s very easy to see that even a slight fluctuation in a market of that size can have dire
consequences.
Unfortunately, the real estate market collapsed, and then the financial system, due to a few underlying
circumstances. Many people bought homes that were priced well beyond their means. They were able
to do so because several mortgage lending companies enabled them with a wink and a nudge via
various types of disreputable loans, such as liar loans. A liar

  • 2. Questions On The Doctrine Of Discovery Essay Thomas Berumen AIS 304 Professor Harjo October 18, 2016 AIS 304 Midterm 1. The Doctrine of Discovery was a concept used to further colonization and strip land from the indigenous people. According to Class 7 Lecture, it allowed colonial powers to colonize the land that they discovered even if indigenous people already lived there. The doctrine provides title to the nation making the discovery of the land even if the soil is inhabited by natives. Provided the land excluded European sovereign . When European powers establish rule in what is now the United States the government was given the ownership of the lands until they felt the need use of the land. The Indians currently residing in the lands were just inhabitants. The doctrine set for by Chief Justice Marshall was set forth to mimic colonial powers and prevent further European expansion on U.S. soils. Following the Johnson v McIntosh case, it established a preventive measure of Indians and Indian tribes from selling the land to anyone but the United States government. This was to prevent European colonies to develop in the United States. The doctrine was important for the development and expansion of colonial powers, but the implementation was a negative effect by forcefully taking lands from the indigenous. It disowned the culture and lifestyles of millions. Rationally it is a shame that the government chose to deny aboriginal title owners as they should have been allowed to keep their land. • 3. The Most Complex Organs Of The Human Body The eye is one of the most complex organs of the human body. In the human eye, three layers can be distinguished. The outer region consists of the cornea and the sclera [4]. The cornea refracts and transmits the light to the lens and the retina and protects the eye against infection and structural damage to the deeper parts. The sclera is a thick, opaque white tissue that covers 95% of the surface area of the eye. The sclera forms a connective tissue coat that protects the eye from internal and external forces and maintains its shape. The cornea and the sclera are connected at the limbus. With the labour market central to unemployment and the distribution of jobs, many factors arise as the key influences on unemployment. Evidently, Greek heroes like Oedipus are destined to rule, but are also bound to fall, therefore, he cannot alter his own fate. This tragic play proves that the power of fate is indeed stronger than one s free will. Despite his attempts to fight his destiny, Oedipus can never outrun his fate. Regardless of his parents desperation to evade the predicted outcome, fate guides his journey for knowledge, leading to his destruction. It was assumed that if nuclear war happened, then the country with the most nuclear weapons would destroy more of the other country, consequently winning the war (Boilard 1). Tradeoff Weakness In International Organizations Kenneth Saint Preux DIPL 2109AB Professor Edwards 11/10/17 Paper Assignment The argument that there is a tradeoff existing between membership and effectiveness in international organizations is empirically correct. Larger international organizations tend to have lower levels of cooperation between member states, because of member states more focusing on their own sovereignty than work with other states. Examples of this problem happening in the international system can be seen with the European Union, The United Nations, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Although the long run research and studies conducted by different economists gives a very different picture of the relationship between stock returns and economic growth, but very little empirical evidences to support the view with. From all these studies and empirical evidence it can be concluded that stock returns and economic growth are not related but have a negative correlation. Ho= no correlation between economic growth and stock return. H1= there is a relation between economic growth and stock returns On the other hand the results for interest rates give the same type of results. The basic classical economics model suggests that there is a relationship between interest rates and economic growth. Usually reduction in the interest rates cause the level of growth to increase, this is because a reduction in interest rates makes borrowing more cheaper and encourages in investment in the economy, which eventually increases the growth rate. However, an increase in interest rates has an opposite effect on economic growth. According to (Suntum, 2008) high interest rated discourage investment as it s more tempting to rather save the money and earn a decent interest rate, thus making the aggregate demand to fall which then badly affects the economic growth of ... • 30. The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy Essay The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy Thomas Hardy wrote the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge in 1886. Two of the main characters, Donald Farfrae and Michael Henchard have a contrast in luck and Hardy uses characterisation, language, historical and social background and a craft in the structure of his novel to help bring across this point. During this essay I am going to comment upon how Hardy does this and further consider the view that, Farfrae s good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck. Throughout the novel there are many examples of Farfrae s good fortune resulting in Henchard s ill luck. One of the most important examples in the book is when Henchard and Farfrae both gamble on ... This first adds to his ill luck right at the start of the novel when he sells Susan and his daughter in a drunken angry state. Even though this does not directly link in with Farfrae s good fortune (as he is not present in the start of the novel) it does later on in the novel when the furmity seller arrives back and tells the court of Henchard s secret. When Henchard admits to what is being said by the old women all respect is lost for him and he looses his role of town mayor. When Farfrae finally becomes mayor near the end of the novel (after the mayor after Henchard dies) his good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck which is the result of his fatal flaw. Hardy also uses fate against Henchard throughout the whole novel. An example of this is when Henchard and Farfrae both hold a dance for the townspeople. Farfrae has his in a barn whereas Henchard s is out in the open. When it rains on the night of the dance everyone turns out to Farfrae s even Susan and Elizabeth Jane. • 35. Analysis Of Girl By Jamaica Kincaid Society has created in their minds the way a woman is supposed to act and the things they are allowed to do. In Jamaica Kincaid s Girl , we see a young woman being forced to live by the likeness of the society in which she dwells. Although this is not the life she wants to live, she has no other choice than to become the woman she was made to be. Throughout time the relationship between mothers and daughters have changed. Many mothers hold on to the old fashioned opinion of what a woman should be and many older women feel that a women s true role in life is to be domesticated. This idea of a woman s place in the home is being reinforced throughout Kincaid s short story. The mother in the story is telling her young daughter the ways things should be done. Wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the colored clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry. She further goes on to describe other household chores and how they should be correctly done. This is how you sweep a corner. She tells her daughter how to set a table for different meals, how to cook things, and even how to pick out bread. Unfortunately, though, the story doesn t tell a woman how to have a successful career, to go to college, or how to work outside of the home. In those days women were expected to stay at home while their husband s go out to work and make all the money. Even if they tried, they were not allowed to go outside the way society made them to be and this mother is trying to raise her young daughter the same way she was raised which is to be a house wife. Even though the girl says nothing in the story, she is building resentment towards her mother because she feels that she should be allowed to make her own decision on whether to be domesticated. Throughout the story never did the mother once stop to get her daughter s input on the issues, she just simply tells her daughter that she has no other choice but to be domesticated and there is no way of changing it. People need to know the dangers and what they can do to avoid them. In Florida, evacuation routes have been prepared and cyclone shelters are clearly signed and posted. Planning includes land use planning. This regulation is used to reduce the vulnerability of people and property so for example, only low value land uses (recreational) can occupy coastal strips, the areas most vulnerable to a storm. In Northeast Florida, coastal properties have been rallied above the ground on stilts and have non residential functions on the ground (storage). This means that hazards like the storm surges do not impact the people and less damage occurs to infrastructure. Warning systems put in place to predict incoming storms inform the public about them. This is linked with the effectiveness of the government and how developed the country is. Prior to television, citizens across the country glued themselves to the radio listening to the broadcast of popular crime dramas. Before radio, books and newsprint fulfilled society s craving for dramatic violence. Prior to the days of technology, live stage performances served to sate man s desire for thrills. With the recent advent of technology along with an ever increasing human desire for blood pumping entertainment, children now are much more exposed to media violence than ever before. • 44. Corporate Credit And Risk Management On the other hand, Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, prefers to describe credit default swaps in terms of risk management. With all that said, derivatives are not inherently dangerous with the proper conditions in place as many non financial companies buy derivatives in a responsible manner as a hedge for their business expenses. For example, an airline can hedge against rising oil prices or a multinational manufacturing corporation might hedge against a currency change with derivatives. In these instances, derivatives actually reduce systemic risk. In fact, even Warren Buffett uses them to some degree. However, it s a potentially disastrous situation when Wall Street goes far beyond simply hedging risk and that is exactly what has happened. Moral hazard has ensued as the major banks don t have an incentive to hedge their bets conservatively because they ve been branded too big to fail. Thus, the unregulated credit default swap market alone had grown to $42.6 trillion by 2007, roughly the household wealth of the U.S. It s very easy to see that even a slight fluctuation in a market of that size can have dire consequences. Unfortunately, the real estate market collapsed, and then the financial system, due to a few underlying circumstances. Many people bought homes that were priced well beyond their means. They were able to do so because several mortgage lending companies enabled them with a wink and a nudge via various types of disreputable loans, such as liar loans. A liar ...
