Write An Essay About Pompeii
Pompeii
Scorched. Thats how the residents of the once flourishing Roman city wound up. In 79 AD, what the
people of the charming city of Pompeii once thought was a docile mountain, turned out to be an
apocalypse in a can. The apocalypse in a can more commonly referred to as mount Vesuvius, an active
volcano, buried the ancient city of Pompeii under several meters of ash. This left the city hidden from
the world for hundreds of years until it was rediscovered in 1748. Pompeii was originally settled by
the Greeks, but eventually became part of the Roman Empire. Pompeii has a history of being a
vacation spot for wealthy vacationers, but also home to many locals. Just across the water was mount
Vesuvius, a great eye candy for the tourists of Pompeii. Little did they know the danger it presented.
The city remained buried under ash for many years. The death of Pompeii ... Show more content on

When the city was rediscovered, it changed the way the world knew the Roman Empire. We learned
many things from the paintings on the walls alone. We got a better idea of things like what was
considered beautiful or what was eaten. Another secret uncovered was how the ancient world looked
and worked. Many people might say, We know what happened in the ancient world, there were carts
and people died at like 40. But the reason we learned so much from Pompeii specifically was because
the scrolls in the city were so well preserved that they could be read and translated. We even discover
a scroll that an eye witness of the eruption in 79 AD wrote, and it described the event in tremendous
detail. Finally, one last thing we learned from Pompeii was, and this is arguably the most important,
don t live next to active volcanoes. Seriously, don t do that. Unfortunately, people won t heed my
warning and still live next to as many volcanoes as they want, but just a warning.... History tends to

Mission Success Requires Special Operations Force in The...
The Special Operations Force (SOF) Imperatives prescribe key operational requirements that Special
Forces Soldiers must incorporate into their mission planning and execution for the greatest chance at
mission success. The Ugly American is a fictional book first published in 1958 that offers an insight to
American arrogance, incompetence, and corruption, but bears a remarkable resemblance of how
America stills thinks and functions abroad today. The book portrays characters serving as foreign
dignitaries in Southeast Asia whom, for the most part, were grossly ineffective in their duties. A
number of these characters served in key positions that could have made a difference in the struggle
with communism had they incorporated the SOF ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This understanding and pre planning is something that we do during a Pre Deployment Site Survey
(PDSS). From personal experience, I admit that detachments that I have served on weren t as prepared
as Finian. Our PDSS has returned to the detachment with questions left unanswered and I attribute that
to a lack of prior understanding of the environment. If prior research is not conducted to understand
the full spectrum, there is no way that a thorough site survey can occur. This can lead to an ill prepared
deployment and risk damaging rapport with the host nation. Another imperative that Father Finian
displayed was his ability to ensure legitimacy and credibility with the local population. He did so not
by showing up as the educated, knowledgeable, and powerful American, but by making himself a peer
amongst the locals. Finian knew there were three things that had to happen rather quickly: Find a
courageous Catholic, learn the local language, and build an immunity to the local cuisine and water.
Finding another Catholic is an obvious must; however, learning the local language and eating the local
fare is an imperative that Americans are doing less of as the years go by. Learning the language and
eating the food should be an obvious necessity but that s not the case. Some Americans have the
arrogance that English is the superior language of the world and that others should strive to learn it. I
say this because one of those Americans

Hollywood Exhibition Industry
The accusation of eight largest Hollywood companies _ Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Warner
Bros., Columbia, United Artists, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, RKO and Universal_ did not
directly hurt movie attendance, but it did have a profound effect on film industry profitibility and
stability. The studios acussed of of monopolizing film distribution and exhibition through ownership
of first run theaters and of participating in a variety of collusive practices. For the five majors, the
government required the divorcement of production and distribution from exhibition. By cutting the
link between production and exhibition, the consent decrees made film production a much less stable
undertaking. Every film became a risk, for both producer and exhibitor while in the past the risk had
been cushioned by the activities of a large company . The idea was that a breakup of the studios would
end the control of exhibition and lead to greater competition throughout the film industry. The
government efforts didi not end a set of monopolistic practices. ... Show more content on

Natural Disasters In New Mexico
My group and I believe that the safest place in America is Las Vegas, New Mexico that is. New
Mexico is one of the few states with few to no common natural disasters. We believe this because the
only natural disaster in New Mexico is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms occur almost anywhere, they
are made by updrafts which is made with warm air rising. Las Vegas is free of hurricanes, tornadoes,
and earthquake and only has one natural disaster that is common, thunderstorms. One of the natural
disasters that doesn t occur in New Mexico is hurricanes. Hurricanes are formed in large bodies of
warm water roughly about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Because there is no water, or at least large bodies of
water, no hurricanes can hit Las Vegas. Another

Monologue In The Siree
The use of monologue in this poem shapes a paradoxical theme, which makes the siren s motivation
blurry. In the context, the poem uses the word song three times in the first lines of three stanzas. The
beginning stanzas are monologues of the siren. In the context, the song appears to be irresistibly
attractive to the men, that it makes men jump over the board even if they see where they are heading
to is scattered with corpses. The footnote of the poem has clarified that this song is chanted by the
siren, and it leads to the demise of the sailors. Hence, it is reasonable to presume that the siren
produces songs to lure the sailors, and sailors will get killed afterward. However, the poem spends 5
out of 9 stanzas stating that the siren as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From my perspective, using these two elements creates a hasty tone so that the siren s dire need of
salvation is displayed in a pressing manner. For example, in the 7th and 8th stanza, to you and only

extensively repeats the words, as if she sees the sailor as a savior. It can be implied that the siren is so
desperate that she attempts to address the importance of the sailor. Also, the siren makes such
desperate call by repeating the importance and uniqueness of the sailor over and over again via such
anaphora so that she presumes the sailor can be persuaded. The anaphora here no doubt expresses the
eagerness that the siren holds in attempts to reach the sailor. Thus, the siren makes such hasty tone by
stressing the idea that the sailors are metaphorically the only

Magazines no longer give girls advice on how to grow up to be a respected person or a loving friend;
instead they give advice on how to hook up quick or make his dreams come true. Where has all the
wholesome advice gone? Women have let the idea of looking beautiful take over their self confidence
and life. Healthy Place, an online magazine teaching women about living a healthy life, says that,
today s fashion models weigh twenty three percent less than the average female, and a young woman
between the ages of 18 34 has a seven percent chance of being as slim as a catwalk model and a one
percent chance of being as thin as a supermodel. So why do women push themselves to be excessively
thin when these models are anomalies? They do it because the media tells them that this look is the
only look that can attract men. Even if a woman is beautiful according to the media s standards, she
will always find something about her body that she hates, whether it is her hair or her belly button, no
women is completely satisfied. Our society is very accepting of different religions and lifestyles, so
why can we not accept different types of beauty as well? As a teenager, I know the pressure put on

going there I had the opportunity of treating patients with different systemic diseases, and getting

need to check vitals and medical history during each appointment. Also, it was a great place to

The Tyger Religion
The Lamb and The Tyger Religion had a powerful influence on William Blake during the
Romanticism period. As a poet, William used imagination, presented emotions and the concept of
nature. He placed his voice through the words of his poems. In The Lamb he displays the teachings of
Christianity. William Blake strives for the reader to embrace the Creator outlooks of innocence and
wildness. In The Tyger he tries to make the reader understand why such an animal was originated.
However, the author emphasizes to the reader the purpose of God s creations. The lamb is
characterized as the peaceful perspective of God. In The Lamb it states, I a child and thou a lamb, we

In The Tyger it states, Did he who made the Lamb make thee? (Blake line 20). William Blake s
curiosity makes the reader feel uncertain. He only highlights the importance of the tyger through
asking questions. Blake s questions were challenging the principles of Christianity. He was underling
why God created the beautiful lamb and the ferocious tyger. He wanted people to know that the world
is filled with tranquility and disturbance. God himself wants people to adhere to the opposites of life.
The way we humans deal with beauty with horror and love with pain. God is the creator of both

perception and the purpose of the tyger. God himself is the human soul of honesty and brute force.
When the stars threw down their spears and water d heaven with their tears (Blake 17 18). The stars

of the tyger is to be our weapon to destroy injustice and cruel activities in the world. The tyger is our
inner strength to ward off evil. God himself is the tyger because he is the one that helps his devotees in
the time of hardships. He does not let his devotees suffer or be faced with degradation. William Blake
depicted the tyger as the malevolent beast, to make the reader apprehend the beauty of God s creation.

Multilingualism And Language Shift
A language shift occurs when the people in a particular culture or sub culture change the primary
language that they use for communication (wiseGEEK, n.d). According to Ravindranath (2009),
language shift is the process by which a speech community in a contact situation that is consisting of
bilingual speakers increasingly stops using one of its two languages prefers by other. Tsitsipis (n.d.)
states that when a language is shifting its structural phases do not remain together even though this
holds also true for normal language change. From a purely linguistic of view, one has to find out

Bhatia (2013), states that bilingualism and multilingualism is an interdisciplinary and complex field .
As is self evident from the prefixes (bi and multi ), bilingualism and multilingualism phenomena are
devoted to the study of production, processing, and comprehension of two or more languages,
respectively. Bilingualism is a specific case of multilingualism, which has no ceiling on the number of
languages a speaker may dominate. The timing and sequence in which one learns each of the
languages has led to other distinctions between kinds of multilingualism. Much of the linguistics
literature, for example, identifies native language or mother tongue as a first language, ignoring the
possibility or diminishing the value of having more than one native language or mother tongue. Such a
person is often referred to as a simultaneous bilingual, while someone who acquires the second
language after the first one is often referred to as a sequential bilingual ( early if between early
childhood and puberty, and late if after puberty). The context of language acquisition leads naturally to
distinguishing between informal bilinguals, who acquire their languages outside of formal settings like
schools, imitating the natural processes of acquiring the mother tongue, and formal bilinguals, who
generally learn the language in schools or similar settings. When these terms apply to groups, one
speaks of bilingual or multilingual communities or nations. The aggregate enumeration of the speakers
in these groups (also referred to as language diversity or demography) will often profile the number of
monolingual and bilingual speakers of each language. For example, there may be a multilingual
community in which speakers are monolingual in each of three languages. This would be rare, and the
language groups would probably be isolated from each other. More often than

Democracy and Government
Democracy is defined as the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of
government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by
the people themselves. So by the very definition, these governments are enlisted to advocate for the
interest of its citizens regardless of gender, race or age. All democracies are government by a specific
document which outline the method in which they are run and what rights they protect. A common
facet in all these documents is a clause that states that the government runs solely on the will of the
people, wand when will differs, the majority will prevail. However the purpose of democracy is that it
allows the ideals of minorities to be expressed. This balanced system allows for all to have a voice.
Unfortunately many times Lobbyists and political parties can generalize the will of the people, serving
industries more than citizens. However this is often checked up on, and with recent emergence of third
parties, the voice of people can be heard.
Democracies are set to address the issues which adolescents believe are important, and many have
infrastructure to deal with adolescent issues. One of the popular examples of this is the United States
We the People online petitions, an interactive way that allows the White House keep a pulse on
important issues. Any petition that is signed by more than one hundred thousand people, will be

Darwin´s Theory of Natural Selection and Primates
Darwin s ideas about organic evolution were drawn from the existing forces of knowledge on
evolution developed by Lyell, Malthus, and Lamarck. Although Darwin was not the first thinker about
the concept of evolution, he was a revolutionary in developing a theory of evolution that was
consistent. The distinctive element of the evolutionary theory conceived by Darwin is the way he
viewed species. Darwin considered variation among individuals of a species to be natural. He further
argued that variation, far from being problematic, actually provides the explanation for the existence
of distinct species. Darwin adopted elements from Malthus s theory on population growth and stated
that only those members of a population that are capable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

GROUP 2
B) After gaining a clear understanding of natural selection and its prominence in the theory of
evolution, the possibility of linking human origin with its ancestors (Primates) has become clearer.
Human evolution is characterized by a number of morphological, developmental, physiological, and
behavioral changes but most interestingly the basis for such changes is in understanding the origins of
humans. The Primate order indeed serves as the starting point for human evolution. The Primates are
an ancient and diverse Eutherian group. Although Primates are considered as tropical animals that live
in forest setting, yet they inhabit many kinds of landscapes and live in widely diverse climates.
Primates are divided into two groups, the Strepsirhini and the Haplorhini. Strepsirhines have long
muzzle, wet noses, lower incisors forming a toothcomb, nocturnal, and have an immobile upper lip.
Haplorhines are further divided into two major groups, the Platyrrhini and the Catarrhini. Platyrrhines
include the new world monkeys found mainly in the South and Central America. Catarrhines include
the old world monkeys and Hominoidea. Homioidea are further divided into apes and humans.
The following physical and behavioral characteristics identify Primates as a separate order of

1 And 2 Corinthians Freedom
The greatness of Jesus death on the cross and his resurrection is freedom from the law, freedom from
the consequences of sin and freedom to live a new life. In essence, one s salvation is no longer based
on their ability to fulfill the law, but instead placing faith in Christ and his fulfillment through the
cross. Yet, there is great tension in Christ s gift of freedom. Are there behaviors or actions that can
diminish Christ s work in one s life and are Christians free to do anything they want because they have
been forgiven? Certainly these questions have been answered through Paul s letters to the church in
Corinth. The books of 1 2 Corinthians are addressed to people who have come out of a pagan lifestyle
and accepted Christ as their Savior. Yet at the same time, they struggle to leave their old way of life
behind. What is more, they claim to have knowledge that allows them live however they want; and
yet, Paul confronts their claim as foolishness and complete missing of why Jesus died and rose again.
This point comes to a head within 1 Corinthians chapter eight; in which, Paul s purpose of this chapter
is to correct the church s wrongful understanding of freedom; such as eating food sacrificed to ...

Schizophrenia In In Cold Blood

Today mental illness continues to be misunderstood and is only often mentioned when justifying
crimes of white men. For instance, James Fields, a nazi sympathizer, slammed his car towards a crowd

even the roaring of the Celtic Tiger cannot drown it out. Women can vote, can serve as jurors, judges,
TD s or Taoiseach. Equal pay is protected under legislation. We have certain rights to maternity leave.

In hard cash terms, men earn on average, £1.83 more per hour than women do.
Women s work is still seen as that of love labour , that of working in the home raising a family and
taking care of the housework without pay. Men on the other hand are seen as the breadwinners, their
work is paid labour. Their job is to go out into paid employment and provide for their family.
There are two knock on effects of women staying a home minding the family. Firstly they are not
financially independent. They do not earn any money and are dependent on income received from
their partners. Because nobody gets paid for rearing a family it s status as an occupation is at the
bottom of the ladder and because women are dependant financially for money on their husband it
means they in the past have had less input into the decisions affecting the family resulting in no input
into the decisions affecting society. A woman s place was in the home. A second effect of women s
position in the family is that they are often isolated from each other and from society in general.
Unlike a worker they have little opportunity of meeting, sharing experiences, they on their own have
little power to change the conditions they find themselves in.
The family is a trap for women today as much as for women at the beginning of the industrial
revolution. As mentioned above, women are paid on average 2/3 of the wage that men are paid, so
within any partnership it obviously makes more

Essay Exploring John Mill s Harm Principle
Freedom is a necessary principle to abide by in order for the human race to function. On the other
hand, freedom can be taken advantage of, thus resulting in harmful consequences to those directly and
indirectly involved. The article, On Liberty by John S. Mills, places emphasis on the functioning of
individual liberty and its co existence with society. Mills stresses the limits of individual liberty
through what is famously known as his Harm Principle: the only purpose for which power may be
rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to
others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant (Cahn). With special
consideration placed on drug use and free ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads to an increase in criminal activity such as neglect of familial duties, robberies to fund their
dependency, and violence to defend their habits. The drugee becomes a nuisance to society. Some
become homeless and exhibit poor health habits such as malnutrition and tooth decay. Other negative
effects include the transference of diseases because of needle sharing. Though drug use is a personal
choice, the effects on the rest of society are undeniable. The best intentions are formulated on a
personal level, but this is overcastted by its negative effects. This argument, however, is a bit one
sided because the reason for using and dependency varies between users.
In pre modern times, drugs took on a role of medicinal use. As they were distributed in a free market
without any constraints, Opium was recommended for sleepless nights, Cocaine for anesthesia,
Hashish for relaxation (Hart, Ksir Ray). These drugs were not dubbed as harmful, therefore, under the
appropriate circumstances, provided beneficial effects to its users. More recently, individuals are more
inclined to use drugs as an escape . Stimulants provide a sort of alternate existence which tends to
reduce mental tension, increase energy, or induce euphoria (Hart, Ksir Ray). Argumentatively
speaking, drug use only affects the user, so there is no valid reasoning for impairing the freedom of
citizens by prohibiting them. Individuals benefit by having the freedom to use

Art Comparison Essay
Compare and Contrast Works of Art
Bright colors jumping at you asking for attention, images so real viewers can not tell the difference.
These are the thoughts that came to my head as I gazed at two works of art by two Mexican artists at
MoLAA museum of art . I visited two museums, Bowers Museum of cultural Art in the heart of
Southern California and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach for my report
unfortunately I only liked the works in MoLAA and will talk about it through out my paper. I will talk
about two Mexican artists Rafael Cauduro and David Alfaro Siqueros that caught my eye, and made
me want to learn more of them and their approach to art. Siqueiros caught my eye and interest because

Cauduro paints supernatural scenarios with realism akin to 17th century masters like Dutch artists
Rembrandt van Rijin (Painting information Cauduro).
The piece I choose to critic is titled Buscado por su madre or Wanted by his Mother by Rafael
Cauduro, no year. This piece is an Oil on Canvas painting that measured 48 x36 located at the Long
Beaches MoLAA. The work is presented as one of a few Mexican artists that share an interest in their
painting primarily figurative style, political in nature, that often narrated the history of Mexico or the
indigenous culture. The painting is one of the first viewers see as they enter the Museum. It is at eye
level and demonstrates a superb use of illusionistic realism that it creates the illusion of being real.
The painting is of a old Missing poster of a man on a brick wall. What made it stand out in my eyes
was the fact that it looked to be a three dimensional object on what looked like real bricks with the
words wanted by mother on the top. Cauduro s piece, in my eyes looked like he literally took a chunk
out of a wall, and placed an old torn missing poster of a man on the front and put it out for display.
Cauduro uses texture to represent the look of brick by applying thick strokes of paint creating a body
of its own as and mimics the look and shape of brick. He also makes applies the same technique on the
wanted poster by implying that it is old and torn by again layering his paint to create the

Methadone Case Study
Methadone is a commonly used opioid to relieve pain in both veterinary and human medicine. To help
develop appropriate pain management practices and to develop a quantitative model for predicting
methadone dosimetry in plasma and specific tissues, a flow limited multi route physiologically based
pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model for methadone in dogs constructed with Berkeley MadonnaTM was
developed, specifically examining the Beagle and Greyhound breeds. The model accounts for
intravenous (IV), subcutaneous (SC), and oral administrations, and compartmentalizes the body into
components of venous blood, arterial blood, muscle, lung, brain, heart, liver, GI tract, kidney, and rest
of body. This model was calibrated from plasma pharmacokinetic data

not have the ability to safely end the harassment they face every day, and yet, they continue to endure

Geology Essay
Geology is everywhere! We use items made from rocks and minerals all day and every day. Per the
University of Oregon, the Natural History Museum states that it is estimated that every person in the
United States will use more than three million pounds of rocks, minerals and metals during their
lifetime. A mineral is an inorganic substance occurring chemical compound, usually of crystalline
form that can be manipulated and used to make something else. A rock is the solid mineral material
that forms on the earths surface, and in the ocean. We use different rocks and minerals based on the
geologic timescale and the human time scale. Rocks and minerals are the building blocks of life. They
make up materials, that we use every day unconsciously. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They can be manipulated and transformed into various objects. Most minerals have more than one
purpose because they are so organic. Gold has been a hot commodity since it was discovered. Gold is
bought and sold every day, and every person wants their hands on it. Gold was named California s
state mineral in 1965 following the gold rush. It is used for mostly jewelry as well as for medals and
trophies. Gold can also be used in dentistry machine equipment. Today in society, gold is a symbol of
power and status. The more gold you have the more money people think you have. Talc is common
when it comes to powder like substances. It is one of the main ingredients in baby powder, and in the
powders used in gymnastics for good grip. Quartz is one of the most versatile minerals on earth s crust
as well as the most common. It is used to make sandpaper, soap, pottery, heavy equipment, heat ray
lamps, glass, paints, radios, televisions, clocks, computers, and watches. Quartz has many different
uses because of its special properties; under mechanical stress, it can develop electric properties.
Asbestos is another very common mineral. The crystal structure and chemical composition of this
mineral make its fibers very strong and resistant to heat and chemicals. Asbestos is flexible, which
makes it great for building materials like, ceiling and floor tiles, insulation for walls and pipes,
decorative coatings, and roofing materials. Asbestos is also used in yarn,

League Of The Iroquois Research Paper
The League of the Iroquois is a historic confederacy comprised of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga,
Oneida, Mohawk, and later the Tuscarora tribes. Coming with the message of peace, Deganawida tried
to convince the tribes to become one mind, one heart, one law. He saw the advantages of coming
together as a united people and the foolishness of the constant infighting. Upon the formation of the
league, the Mohawk chief Hiawatha made strings of wampum as a symbol that became significant in
diplomatic meetings and treaties.
The tribes came together to form the league for several reasons: because of their devotion to the law of
retaliation, tribes were constantly at war with each other. In addition to internal warfare, Europeans
were beginning to appear in North America, and it is speculated that the tribes agreed to form the
confederacy in order to seem united to the foreigners encroaching on their land. They could not defend
their land from the Europeans while fighting with each other at the same time. It is still being
discussed today, however, whether the league formed before or after European contact. To this day, the
Iroquois maintain that they formed pre contact. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The league was matrilineal, they traced their lineage from mothers rather than from fathers, and each
clan had clan mothers. Clan mothers controlled many things in their clans; they controlled the land,
deliberated over who was chosen as chief, and loaned power to the men of the tribe. In situations of
war, the clan mothers determined whether or not it was worth it to actually fight. If the men of the
tribe disagreed with their decision and still wanted to go to war, the clan mothers could withhold food,
water, and any other necessary supplies required for the warriors to be able to

The American Academy of Dermatology reports more women of child bearing years, between 20 year
s old through 40 year s old are developing melanoma, reminding women that getting tested for the

Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. Desmond Tutu. The Lord Of
The Flies is about young boys from a range of 6 12 on a plane during WW2 and the plane gets shot
done and they get stuck on an island by themselves. With the boys being so young they are afraid of
The Beast . Some boys try to assemble to try to survive on this island. In The Lord Of The Flies By:
William Golding. There are a great amount of symbols he uses to try to show an object or something
is more than just what it actually is. In the novel he uses the fire as a reoccurring symbol in the book
he also uses the conch shell in the book. The last symbol he uses in the book is the glasses. Although
there are a bunch symbols in the book the first one is the fire.
The fire in this book is a reoccurring symbol often times in this novel the fire shows something greater

A Cream Cracker Under the Settee. Alan Bennett
The melancholy of life, death and old age, are one of the many issues dealt with, in Alan Bennett s
heart rending tale. It tells the story of an isolated, fragile, elderly woman, who feels ensnared in a
modernised society in which she strives for her sovereignty and prominence. In a culture where the
old are forgotten, neglected and depicted as useless. A Cream Cracker Under The Settee seems to be
the perfect title of the play as the double entendre epitomizes this remarkably. In addition, another
reason for the dramatic piece being called A Cream Cracker Under The Settee . Is because a cream
cracker was indeed found under a settee in the play, this makes the title rather ironic. As the title in

  • 3. Write An Essay About Pompeii Pompeii Scorched. Thats how the residents of the once flourishing Roman city wound up. In 79 AD, what the people of the charming city of Pompeii once thought was a docile mountain, turned out to be an apocalypse in a can. The apocalypse in a can more commonly referred to as mount Vesuvius, an active volcano, buried the ancient city of Pompeii under several meters of ash. This left the city hidden from the world for hundreds of years until it was rediscovered in 1748. Pompeii was originally settled by the Greeks, but eventually became part of the Roman Empire. Pompeii has a history of being a vacation spot for wealthy vacationers, but also home to many locals. Just across the water was mount Vesuvius, a great eye candy for the tourists of Pompeii. Little did they know the danger it presented. The city remained buried under ash for many years. The death of Pompeii ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the city was rediscovered, it changed the way the world knew the Roman Empire. We learned many things from the paintings on the walls alone. We got a better idea of things like what was considered beautiful or what was eaten. Another secret uncovered was how the ancient world looked and worked. Many people might say, We know what happened in the ancient world, there were carts and people died at like 40. But the reason we learned so much from Pompeii specifically was because the scrolls in the city were so well preserved that they could be read and translated. We even discover a scroll that an eye witness of the eruption in 79 AD wrote, and it described the event in tremendous detail. Finally, one last thing we learned from Pompeii was, and this is arguably the most important, don t live next to active volcanoes. Seriously, don t do that. Unfortunately, people won t heed my warning and still live next to as many volcanoes as they want, but just a warning.... History tends to repeat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Mission Success Requires Special Operations Force in The... The Special Operations Force (SOF) Imperatives prescribe key operational requirements that Special Forces Soldiers must incorporate into their mission planning and execution for the greatest chance at mission success. The Ugly American is a fictional book first published in 1958 that offers an insight to American arrogance, incompetence, and corruption, but bears a remarkable resemblance of how America stills thinks and functions abroad today. The book portrays characters serving as foreign dignitaries in Southeast Asia whom, for the most part, were grossly ineffective in their duties. This understanding and pre planning is something that we do during a Pre Deployment Site Survey (PDSS). From personal experience, I admit that detachments that I have served on weren t as prepared as Finian. Our PDSS has returned to the detachment with questions left unanswered and I attribute that to a lack of prior understanding of the environment. If prior research is not conducted to understand the full spectrum, there is no way that a thorough site survey can occur. This can lead to an ill prepared deployment and risk damaging rapport with the host nation. Another imperative that Father Finian displayed was his ability to ensure legitimacy and credibility with the local population. He did so not by showing up as the educated, knowledgeable, and powerful American, but by making himself a peer amongst the locals. Finian knew there were three things that had to happen rather quickly: Find a courageous Catholic, learn the local language, and build an immunity to the local cuisine and water. Finding another Catholic is an obvious must; however, learning the local language and eating the local fare is an imperative that Americans are doing less of as the years go by. Learning the language and eating the food should be an obvious necessity but that s not the case. Some Americans have the arrogance that English is the superior language of the world and that others should strive to learn it. I say this because one of those Americans ... • 5. Hollywood Exhibition Industry The accusation of eight largest Hollywood companies _ Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Warner Bros., Columbia, United Artists, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, RKO and Universal_ did not directly hurt movie attendance, but it did have a profound effect on film industry profitibility and stability. The studios acussed of of monopolizing film distribution and exhibition through ownership of first run theaters and of participating in a variety of collusive practices. For the five majors, the government required the divorcement of production and distribution from exhibition. By cutting the link between production and exhibition, the consent decrees made film production a much less stable undertaking. Every film became a risk, for both producer and exhibitor while in the past the risk had been cushioned by the activities of a large company . The idea was that a breakup of the studios would end the control of exhibition and lead to greater competition throughout the film industry. The government efforts didi not end a set of monopolistic practices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Monologue In The Siree The use of monologue in this poem shapes a paradoxical theme, which makes the siren s motivation blurry. In the context, the poem uses the word song three times in the first lines of three stanzas. The beginning stanzas are monologues of the siren. In the context, the song appears to be irresistibly attractive to the men, that it makes men jump over the board even if they see where they are heading to is scattered with corpses. The footnote of the poem has clarified that this song is chanted by the siren, and it leads to the demise of the sailors. Hence, it is reasonable to presume that the siren produces songs to lure the sailors, and sailors will get killed afterward. However, the poem spends 5 out of 9 stanzas stating that the siren as ... For example, in the 7th and 8th stanza, to you and only respectively appear twice and three times. The siren here addresses the sailor as you , and she extensively repeats the words, as if she sees the sailor as a savior. It can be implied that the siren is so desperate that she attempts to address the importance of the sailor. Also, the siren makes such desperate call by repeating the importance and uniqueness of the sailor over and over again via such anaphora so that she presumes the sailor can be persuaded. The anaphora here no doubt expresses the eagerness that the siren holds in attempts to reach the sailor. Thus, the siren makes such hasty tone by stressing the idea that the sailors are metaphorically the only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Healthy Place, an online magazine teaching women about living a healthy life, says that, today s fashion models weigh twenty three percent less than the average female, and a young woman between the ages of 18 34 has a seven percent chance of being as slim as a catwalk model and a one percent chance of being as thin as a supermodel. So why do women push themselves to be excessively thin when these models are anomalies? They do it because the media tells them that this look is the only look that can attract men. As a poet, William used imagination, presented emotions and the concept of nature. He placed his voice through the words of his poems. In The Lamb he displays the teachings of Christianity. William Blake strives for the reader to embrace the Creator outlooks of innocence and wildness. In The Tyger he tries to make the reader understand why such an animal was originated. He wanted people to know that the world is filled with tranquility and disturbance. God himself wants people to adhere to the opposites of life. The way we humans deal with beauty with horror and love with pain. God is the creator of both creatures, but also the creator of such emotions presented within them. People misconceive the perception and the purpose of the tyger. God himself is the human soul of honesty and brute force. When the stars threw down their spears and water d heaven with their tears (Blake 17 18). The stars act as our saviors; like angels to protect us. Although, nature acts as a warrior. Nature quickly placed on its armor to attack the dangerous tyger. The waters cried due to the nefarious existence of such a creature. Not only nature, but man himself on Earth is not aware of what the tyger can do. The purpose of the tyger is to be our weapon to destroy injustice and cruel activities in the world. The tyger is our inner strength to ward off evil. God himself is the tyger because he is the one that helps his devotees in the time of hardships. According to Ravindranath (2009), language shift is the process by which a speech community in a contact situation that is consisting of bilingual speakers increasingly stops using one of its two languages prefers by other. Tsitsipis (n.d.) states that when a language is shifting its structural phases do not remain together even though this holds also true for normal language change. As is self evident from the prefixes (bi and multi ), bilingualism and multilingualism phenomena are devoted to the study of production, processing, and comprehension of two or more languages, respectively. Bilingualism is a specific case of multilingualism, which has no ceiling on the number of languages a speaker may dominate. The timing and sequence in which one learns each of the languages has led to other distinctions between kinds of multilingualism. Much of the linguistics literature, for example, identifies native language or mother tongue as a first language, ignoring the possibility or diminishing the value of having more than one native language or mother tongue. Such a person is often referred to as a simultaneous bilingual, while someone who acquires the second language after the first one is often referred to as a sequential bilingual ( early if between early childhood and puberty, and late if after puberty). The context of language acquisition leads naturally to distinguishing between informal bilinguals, who acquire their languages outside of formal settings like schools, imitating the natural processes of acquiring the mother tongue, and formal bilinguals, who generally learn the language in schools or similar settings. When these terms apply to groups, one speaks of bilingual or multilingual communities or nations. The aggregate enumeration of the speakers in these groups (also referred to as language diversity or demography) will often profile the number of monolingual and bilingual speakers of each language. For example, there may be a multilingual community in which speakers are monolingual in each of three languages. This would be rare, and the language groups would probably be isolated from each other. More often than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Democracy and Government Democracy is defined as the belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves. So by the very definition, these governments are enlisted to advocate for the interest of its citizens regardless of gender, race or age. All democracies are government by a specific document which outline the method in which they are run and what rights they protect. A common facet in all these documents is a clause that states that the government runs solely on the will of the people, wand when will differs, the majority will prevail. However the purpose of democracy is that it allows the ideals of minorities to be expressed. This balanced system allows for all to have a voice. Unfortunately many times Lobbyists and political parties can generalize the will of the people, serving industries more than citizens. However this is often checked up on, and with recent emergence of third parties, the voice of people can be heard. Democracies are set to address the issues which adolescents believe are important, and many have infrastructure to deal with adolescent issues. One of the popular examples of this is the United States We the People online petitions, an interactive way that allows the White House keep a pulse on important issues. • 19. Darwin´s Theory of Natural Selection and Primates Darwin s ideas about organic evolution were drawn from the existing forces of knowledge on evolution developed by Lyell, Malthus, and Lamarck. Although Darwin was not the first thinker about the concept of evolution, he was a revolutionary in developing a theory of evolution that was consistent. The distinctive element of the evolutionary theory conceived by Darwin is the way he viewed species. Darwin considered variation among individuals of a species to be natural. He further argued that variation, far from being problematic, actually provides the explanation for the existence of distinct species. Darwin adopted elements from Malthus s theory on population growth and stated that only those members of a population that are capable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New York: Modern library. Ridley, Mark. Evolution. John Wiley sons, 2009. Print. GROUP 2 B) After gaining a clear understanding of natural selection and its prominence in the theory of evolution, the possibility of linking human origin with its ancestors (Primates) has become clearer. Human evolution is characterized by a number of morphological, developmental, physiological, and behavioral changes but most interestingly the basis for such changes is in understanding the origins of humans. The Primate order indeed serves as the starting point for human evolution. The Primates are an ancient and diverse Eutherian group. Although Primates are considered as tropical animals that live in forest setting, yet they inhabit many kinds of landscapes and live in widely diverse climates. Primates are divided into two groups, the Strepsirhini and the Haplorhini. Strepsirhines have long muzzle, wet noses, lower incisors forming a toothcomb, nocturnal, and have an immobile upper lip. Haplorhines are further divided into two major groups, the Platyrrhini and the Catarrhini. Platyrrhines include the new world monkeys found mainly in the South and Central America. Catarrhines include the old world monkeys and Hominoidea. Homioidea are further divided into apes and humans. • 20. 1 And 2 Corinthians Freedom The greatness of Jesus death on the cross and his resurrection is freedom from the law, freedom from the consequences of sin and freedom to live a new life. In essence, one s salvation is no longer based on their ability to fulfill the law, but instead placing faith in Christ and his fulfillment through the cross. Yet, there is great tension in Christ s gift of freedom. Are there behaviors or actions that can diminish Christ s work in one s life and are Christians free to do anything they want because they have been forgiven? Certainly these questions have been answered through Paul s letters to the church in Corinth. The books of 1 2 Corinthians are addressed to people who have come out of a pagan lifestyle and accepted Christ as their Savior. Yet at the same time, they struggle to leave their old way of life behind. What is more, they claim to have knowledge that allows them live however they want; and yet, Paul confronts their claim as foolishness and complete missing of why Jesus died and rose again. This point comes to a head within 1 Corinthians chapter eight; in which, Paul s purpose of this chapter is to correct the church s wrongful understanding of freedom; such as eating food sacrificed to ... Men on the other hand are seen as the breadwinners, their work is paid labour. Their job is to go out into paid employment and provide for their family. There are two knock on effects of women staying a home minding the family. Firstly they are not financially independent. They do not earn any money and are dependent on income received from their partners. Because nobody gets paid for rearing a family it s status as an occupation is at the bottom of the ladder and because women are dependant financially for money on their husband it means they in the past have had less input into the decisions affecting the family resulting in no input into the decisions affecting society. A woman s place was in the home. A second effect of women s position in the family is that they are often isolated from each other and from society in general. Unlike a worker they have little opportunity of meeting, sharing experiences, they on their own have little power to change the conditions they find themselves in. On the other hand, freedom can be taken advantage of, thus resulting in harmful consequences to those directly and indirectly involved. The article, On Liberty by John S. Mills, places emphasis on the functioning of individual liberty and its co existence with society. Mills stresses the limits of individual liberty through what is famously known as his Harm Principle: the only purpose for which power may be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. Though drug use is a personal choice, the effects on the rest of society are undeniable. The best intentions are formulated on a personal level, but this is overcastted by its negative effects. This argument, however, is a bit one sided because the reason for using and dependency varies between users. In pre modern times, drugs took on a role of medicinal use. As they were distributed in a free market without any constraints, Opium was recommended for sleepless nights, Cocaine for anesthesia, Hashish for relaxation (Hart, Ksir Ray). These drugs were not dubbed as harmful, therefore, under the appropriate circumstances, provided beneficial effects to its users. More recently, individuals are more inclined to use drugs as an escape . Stimulants provide a sort of alternate existence which tends to reduce mental tension, increase energy, or induce euphoria (Hart, Ksir Ray). Coming with the message of peace, Deganawida tried to convince the tribes to become one mind, one heart, one law. He saw the advantages of coming together as a united people and the foolishness of the constant infighting. Upon the formation of the league, the Mohawk chief Hiawatha made strings of wampum as a symbol that became significant in diplomatic meetings and treaties. The tribes came together to form the league for several reasons: because of their devotion to the law of retaliation, tribes were constantly at war with each other. In addition to internal warfare, Europeans were beginning to appear in North America, and it is speculated that the tribes agreed to form the confederacy in order to seem united to the foreigners encroaching on their land.
