concert comparisons Essay
After viewing the concert excerpts, construct a comparison of these two concerts. For this assignment I chose to compare and contrast two concerts. The first
concert is from the modern era, while the other is a Baroque Era concert originating from the 17th Century preformed by a modern day orchestra. The Baroque
Era Concert takes place in a large modern day Lutheran Church in front of a small crowd of well dressed onlookers. The second concert that I chose for this
assignment is a modern day rock concert from the English Symphonic Rock Band, Muse. This concert takes place at the O2 Sheppard s Bush Empire Theatre

History Of The Penobscout Building
After Detroit rebuilt in the early 19th century, a thriving community soon sprang up. By the Civil War, over 45,000 people were living in the city and were
primarily spread along Jefferson Avenue to the east and Fort Street to the west. The street starts in the heart of Detroit Financial District, where it is dominated
by skyscrapers. This includes the Penobscout Building, an office tower, that was built in 1928. Upon completion, the building was the eighth tallest building in
the world, the fourth tallest in America and the tallest outside of New York and Chicago. It was the tallest building in Michigan until 1977 after the
construction of the Renaissance Center hotel tower. The building is named for the Penobscot, a Native American Tribe

Australia In The 1800s
During the late 1700 1800s australia was made up of separate colonies, a country struggling to stay intact, low food supply and numerous convicts entering
Australia. Throughout the 1700 1800s sutian reform changes have allowed the thriving development of Australia to be a completed country, such as the wool
industry and gold rush. Within the 1600s the dutch were the first europeans to reach australia, although in 1770 James Cook claimed australia for britain.
Australia still had been distant, forty thousand years ago the first settlers had probably been citizens from southeast asia. But it was known that the first years
of settlement were nearly disastrous. Supposedly the land had been cursed with spoiled soil, unfamiliar climate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Throughout the course of Mango Street, Esperanza s relationship towards her house change. As time passes her feelings about the house itself change and the
emotional impact of the house of her changes as well. Esperanza s house on Mango Street symbolizes her Mexican culture. For so long she has wanted to leave
it. She envisions a different type of life than what she is used to moving from house to house. this house is going to be different / my life is going to be

This new house lacks these improvements. It is no different from her previous homes.
Esperanza is forever marked by the house and neighborhood she lives in. She wants to be like other kids who are allowed to eat their lunch at school instead of
having to go home everyday. These students live father from the school than she does. Esperanza assumes these children live in better houses and
neighborhoods. She is embarrassed by her house and angry that she must be identified by it. As said by Sister Superior, I bet I can see your house from my
window. Which one? Come here. Which one is your house? The sister points to an ugly row of houses in the general direction of Esperanzas address.
Esperanza comes to accept her house as part of her. During the course of the book she learns, you can t leave your culture, your roots. She observes and
experiences growth. She matures. She develops opinions about dress and dating. She becomes more aware about the behaviors of people around her she
develops her sense of right and wrong. In the end, when she writes that she will leave but come back for some . she shows that she has become more
comfortable with who she is. She does not reject her culture entirely there are aspects of it that she embraces. She will always return to the

Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William...
Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote
366 poems about his love for this woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines like, She
ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she
divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a different approach
when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a
reverse portrayal of Petrarch s ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My mistress eyes, which adds
emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter
throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making
comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons,
however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking
things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part
of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the
poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer s
forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be
beautiful without having cheeks as red as rose, or eyes

The Legacy Of The Emancipation Proclamation
When it comes to Abraham Lincoln people will accept anything as factual, which is why all the myths of Lincoln have actually dominated history for so long.
Many believe that the Emancipation Proclamation is solely about honest Abe being a just man and freeing all the slaves with his executive power as sitting
president. Lincoln himself stated that it was actually a war tactic strategically planned to cripple the south. If Lincoln s 1863 article is so dedicated to the
freeing of slaves then why were union states like Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri and West Virginia allowed to still participate in keeping their
slaves? And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts
of States, are, and henceforward shall be free. which is an excerpt from the Emancipation Proclamation itself which shows that a lot of people don t read it well
enough to notice that the slaves were an actual afterthought. Maybe it s because they are so caught up in the notation that Lincoln was about slave s equality
and nothing more.
The common myth that Lincolns parents left the slave state of Kentucky to head to Indiana ,which was free at the time, because they were so against the idea
of slavery, is nothing more but another situation where we put two things together and make something completely out of context. We want to believe so badly
that Abraham was a savior sent from above with a

1. Our Level of Influence is not Static Maxwell and Dornan commence by addressing several fallacies related to becoming a person of influence. One myth the
author attempts to dispel is that past performance always determines future success. They assert that an individual s level of influence is not static (1997,

There is a modern parable about character where an administrative assistant refuses to lie on behalf of her boss. In response to the boss reprimand, she reminds
him that, while she will never lie for him, he can rest assured that she will, also, never lie to him. Early in ministry, I was asked to take responsibility for
registration at a large conference for Chi Alpha. Everything was great, until one year, I discovered a discrepancy of over a thousand dollars. After checking and
rechecking my numbers, I apologetically reported the problem to my superior. While everything was clarified the next day, it was the willingness to be

The Pros And Cons Of Government Regulations
The creation, amendment, rejection or repealing of rules can be defined as rulemaking. Rules are utilized by numerous sections of the government following a
passed statue from Congress which can also be referred to as regulations. Regulations do not begin in the executive branch of government where agencies
developed. They are created in the Congress, where they are the factors for the establishment of the agency involved or function of an agency. The rules start
with a legislative act of Congress. Congress has enacted laws such as the Administrative Procedure Act, the Regulatory Flexibility Act, the Paperwork
Reduction Act, and the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act that require some type of procedure, review, and/or analysis of draft rules by the rule making agencies
themselves or by outside parties (COPELAND, 2008).
Federal government agencies can issue more than four thousand completed rules each year. These cover ever agency of government. The creation and
implementation of rules costs hundreds of billions of dollars. These are not part of the federal budget process and some think these are greater than the cost of
all federal domestic discretionary spending.
A particular agency can be mandated by Congress once a statue is passed requiring that agency to develop a specific rule/rules to concede the statute
requirements. Congress delivers an authorization to deploy the rules. This translates to Congress passing a statute and ultimately does not have the knowledge

The Current Construction Site ( Cdsm Interpretation Centre...
CDSM Scheme Executive Summary:
Introduction:
The current construction site (CDSM interpretation centre scheme) is located in Combe Down village on the east side of rock hall lane near Combe Road. The
CDSM interpretation centre scheme is part of £161 million Comb Down Stone Mine project which is estimated about £1.5 million and compromise of eight
residential houses, one residential flat and one interpretation centre.
History back ground:
Historical aspects are long associated with the city of Bath which is distinguished by its buildings and Roman characteristics. The Southern area of Bath is the
location of Combe Down, which has been understood to be of archaeological significance. It is this attribute that gave rise to the extraction and quarrying of
high quality stone as far back as 1720.
Ralph Allen Yard (located in the eastern section of Combe Down) is an area that malting s and industrial activity had been prominent to certain extent.
However, over several decades, the yard itself has been subjected to continuous alteration leading to structural deterioration and redundancy to its use. The
historic significance associated to structural elements of the yard include its exterior walls, which comprised of stone (Bath Stone). Modern practice had
altered these walls with the introduction of steel frames, which has the potential to reduce the character of the streetscape.
Health and safety:
For the health and safety of the CDSM interpretation centre scheme, number of

Different Cultures And Values Of The United Scotia Nova...
We are all University Students that currently live in Halifax Nova Scotia, but have all grown up in various places. Two of our members are from Ontario and
the remaining members from various parts of China. Given this geographical separation, our group has some obvious diversity in our individual consumer
profiles. This is partly due to our different cultures and values. Our families also greatly influence our contrasting consumer profile with our differing ethnical
backgrounds, different social classes and varying religions. Conversely, we all fit into the age bracket of 18 25 so share some similar purchasing behaviour as
millennial consumers (Kardes et la., 2011, pg 38). We have all been apart of many of the same world changes, such as 911 and global warming. This greatly

are all young adults, finishing up university and starting our independent lives with limited disposible incomes. We tend to make most of our purchases online,
allowing us to find the best deals in the least amount of time. Most of us find that food is our number one expense and value the bonds people make while
sharing a meal. Many of us find it difficult balancing our busy lifestyles and school, but work to covercome these challenges. All of these inflencers guide our
purchasing habits.

Summary Of The Tale Of Genji

World Civilization I
MacKinnon
Text Analysis
The Tale of Genji In early eleventh century Japan, circa the year 1021, noblewoman and lady in waiting Murasaki Shikibu published The Tale of Genji, widely
renowned as the world s first novel. The work is set in Shikibu s contemporary Heian period of Japan, in which political and social ranks dictated society s
functioning and heavy prejudices were placed on those deemed unsuitable for the affairs of public court life. Women fell under this umbrella of outsiders,
meant to live primarily behind screens and closed doors only to be seen by their father and husband. It is believed that Shikibu wrote such a tale of forbidden
romance and whimsical court affairs to bring life to her fellow women who shared in such a limited existence. This single piece of literature manages to
wholly represent the Heian age of Japanese history, embodying the period s culture and seamlessly incorporating a broad spectrum of themes of civilization.
The Tale of Genji revolves around the illegitimate son of Japan s emperor and his favorite concubine Kiritsubo. Kiritsubo is easily influenced by the critics and
judgments of the court, falls ill, and dies of jealously. With her having no concrete political standing, the emperor removes their son from court and assigns
him to the commoner Genji clan (thus giving the boy his name) and names Suzaku, the son he had with Lady Kokiden as the royal prince. Genji matures to be

Analysis Of A Raisin In The Sun Production By Lorraine...
Hello and welcome to the A Raisin in the Sun Production by Lorraine Hansberry.
Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago on March 19, 1930. Hansberry was an African American. She was one of four siblings that include two brothers and
one sister. In the 1930 s racism and segregation was prevalent in the time. Her parents were civil rights activist Carl and Nannie Hansberry Tillman. She was
raised in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago s South Side. Her family was one of the wealthy African American families in Chicago. When she was five
years old, her parents got her a fur coat. She wore it to school one day and she got beaten for wearing it. Also, when she was eight years old she moved to the
white suburbs of Chicago and once her and her family arrived at their new homes they faced harassment and threats by mobs of white people. She nearly died
after getting hit in the head with a brick. Her father went to court to fight for the legal right to live in that new neighborhood. The Supreme Court case of
Hansberry v. Lee Weston Playhouse Theater Company. The characters in A Raisin in the Sun are black and live in Chicago just like Hansberry. The characters
are also going through segregation/racism, similar to Hansberry. All of that damage done to young Lorraine Hansberry changed her when she got older. She
got married in 1953 with Robert Nemiroff. She went to multiple colleges. In the late 40 s she saw Sean O Casey s play Juno and the Paycock and she loved it.

common way of using eggshell is agriculture such as feeding it to chicken and the wild bird, giving plants a calcium boost, tossing it in the compost pile. In the
second place, the eggshells are utilized in medical part such as tooth re mineralizing, using the shell s membrane as an all natural bandage, canine diarrhea

making the smooth flavor. And also some people use it cleaning clothes for stain remover Lastly, charismas ornaments and sidewalk chalk are made from
eggshell by people. For these reasons, I figured out a chemical formula for the eggshell. Eggshell is made up of 95% calcium carbonate and 5% calcium

The formula CACO3 is very common in natural such as limestone cave, animal s bones. Normally, the cement production and agriculture have deployed this

A Star s Temperature And Luminosity Analysis
According to the book, If you know a star s temperature and luminosity, you can determine its radius (Seeds 151). The luminosity of a star is related to its
absolute magnitude, and its spectral class has a relation to the star s temperature. So, in order to estimate the size of Betelgeuse, we would need both its
luminosity (in which we can substitute its absolute magnitude) and its temperature (spectral class), which we have been provided. The absolute magnitude
refers to the brightness of a star if it were 10 pc away (Seeds 145), and the lower the number the brighter the star (and vice versa). According to the spectral
sequence, which goes O, B, A, F, G, K, then M, O stars are the hottest...M stars, the coolest (Seeds 148), with M stars being orange/red in color.
From here, one would use the Hertzsprung Russell Diagram, which compares luminosity and spectral class in order to estimate a star s size. A H R diagram
possesses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So what does this mean in regards to Betelgeuse s size? Well, there is only one explanation: Although they are cool, they are luminous, and that must mean
they are larger and have more surface area than main sequence stars of the same temperature (Seeds 154). This means that Betelgeuse is a red giant, which are
roughly 10 to 100 times larger than the sun (Seeds 154). In fact, according to the H R diagram on page 155, Betelgeuse is even considered a supergiant, which
are over a thousand times the sun s diameter (Seeds 154). In conclusion, one can estimate the size of roughly any star if the absolute magnitude (or luminosity)
and spectral class (or temperature) is known using the H R diagram! In Betelgeuse s case, we can estimate that it is an extremely large supergiant star based on
its position on the H R

The Merits Of Teacher Performance Pay
THE MERITS OF TEACHER PERFORMANCE PAY IN KENYA
Introduction
This paper discusses the merits of performance pay for teachers in Kenya. I argued here that remuneration reforms for civil service teachers will achieve
production efficiency. This paper has three main sections. Section 1 gives a brief description of the scheme of service for teachers in Kenya. Section 2
highlights the economic case in favour of teacher salaries and identifies the government failures in ensuring teacher effectiveness.
Section 3 offers a criticism of teacher performance pay as a reform strategy in determining teacher efficiency in Kenyan public schools. This section further
delves into the issues that affect effective teacher performance pay systems and reflect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The salary system is in ascending order in the scale of eleven job groups. The highest paid teacher, chief principal (job group R) is at grade 11.The lowest paid
teacher, a P2 (job group F) is at grade 1. In addition to the basic salary, teachers are paid allowances with allocations relative to the job group standing, this
include; house allowance, commuter allowance, medical allowance, responsibility allowances. Teachers are entitled to an automatic annual salary increase of
about 4% for every year of service (Teachers Service Commission, 2012 p 1 24). Duflo et al (2012), elaborates on teacher recruitment and salaries in Kenya;
illustrates the central role played by the Teachers Service Commission in teacher management and trade union representation is highlighted to show how the
wage system works (Duflo et al, 2012). Michael and Mathew (2007) underscore that salary schemes for teachers are almost a worldwide characteristic of
public schools. They rely on data from national surveys that indicate that 100% of teachers in public schools are paid using a pay set salary system (Michael
and Mathew, 2007).
Glazerman et al, (2011) argue that the single salary system was created to address equity issues and has spread over the globe, where teachers regularly get
paid based on qualification and experience as opposed to the measure of teacher effectiveness and their students results. (Glazerman et al, 2011;

Determinism And Free-Will
In this essay I will be addressing whether or not human beings are morally responsible for their actions. For one to be morally responsible for his/her action
they must take into account that the decision being made was from their own free will. Leading us now to whether human beings have free will or is it
determined. If we were to say determinism is true, then no individual should be praised or punished for their actions due to the fact it was not based on their
own free action. If free will applies, he/she who commits an act practicing their own free will deserves to be praised or punished for such an act. It could be
argued that due to determinism people are not morally responsible for their actions, however this would be ridiculous. It ... Show more content on

An example of an external force could be parents supporting a type of behaviour thereby encouraging it. On the other hand an internal force would be driven
by hormones. Free will believers assume that things are a bit difficult. They acknowledge that there is internal and external factors, but yet they still believe
that humans are free to choose their own behaviour. Stace theorizes the idea of compatibility or soft determinism. He argues that free will exists but to an
extent which is known as soft determinism. Stace defines free act as free acts are all caused by desire, motives, or by some sort of psychological state of the
agent s mind . Unfree acts on the other hand are those whose immediate causes are states of affairs external to the agent . Soft determinism is the view that
determinism and free will are compatible. It is a form of compatibilism. Soft determinism consists of two main claims:
1. Determinism is true. Every human action or event, was causally determined. For example, if you drank coffee instead of tea last night, you could not have

long time, the Gypsy communities have been a marginalized group by the dominant population on the aspects of social, political and economical (Acton,

them even more segregated (Barany, 2002). A research conducted recently indicates that the Gypsy communities are, usually in significantly health problems

in abject poverty and this makes them easy targets in times of trouble. There are various Gypsy communities

Tales of Genji

Literature of Japan
Mary Diaz
The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu deals heavily with Japanese religions and its influence on Japanese society. Themes of jealousy, responsibility and guilt
are also mixed in with the religious themes. Religions and ideals clash through the course of the novel. Shikibu focused on the two religions of Buddhism and
Shinto. Buddhism represents the modern day religion in the novel and Shinto is viewed as the old religion. As the novel progress the readers start to see the
fusion of the two religions. Throughout the novel several people such as women and priests live their lives according to the religion they choose to follow. This
work of Japanese literature also includes demons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Buddhist priests practice many different rituals and prayers such as the ones for success and purification. They also practice exorcism which is associated
exclusively with Shinto. The two religions intertwined in Japanese society and in the novel, but the character of Lady Rokujo was faced with a deep internal
struggle due to the fusion of the two religions. Lady Rokujo escorts her daughter to a Shinto shrine. She begins to feel a sense of guilt and the conflict between
two religions manifests insides her. Rokujo began to view herself as a traitor to the faith of Buddhism due to the fact she practiced under the beliefs of Shinto
at a Shinto shrine. In order for Lady Rokujo to solve this conflict, she felt she had no other option but to become a nun for the Buddhist religion.
The theme of religion is very important in the novel and the roles of mysterious spirits that can be found throughout the novel. The character of Lady Rokuju
can be used as a prime example for how spirits contribute to novel s plot and help it progress. Her relationship with Genji goes on a downward spiral as the
novel progress; therefore she begins to have feelings which Genji finds unwanting. She began to show distasteful feelings such as being ill tempered and
difficult to deal with. Genji becomes annonyed and tries to distance himself from this relationship by forming a new relationship with a youthful female named

Jake Burton Snowboards Essay
Jake Burton: Burton Snowboards
When you think of snowboarding, more often than not, Burton is the first brand that comes to mind. The most popular brand in the world was made that way
by one man: Jake Burton. His vision to make what was once thought of as a passing fad into the most popular extreme sport in the world was really incredible.
The odds he overcame, from ski resorts not allowing snowboarders to cancer, are a real testament to his dedication and passion to pushing this sport, and
lifestyle, to what it is today. In this paper I will discuss how he turned a wooden plank into an almost $1 billion a year company.

Heritage And Selfishness In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Everyday Use is a short story written by Alice Walker that tells the story of two sisters that choose diverse lifestyles that cause them to view heritage
differently. Walker portrays two characters whose views on heritage contrast each other. Dee is a woman who bases her views on material items and other
people s opinions. Maggie, on the other hand, is a humble, down home woman that creates her own perspective of heritage. Because these characters go down
different paths, there is a disparity between what they think heritage actually is. This allows Walker to develop the differences between Dee and Maggie

selfless woman through her considerate actions and feelings. Though Maggie has never been shown the type of love her sister has, her actions are kind and

By exploring the interactions of Newton with his colleagues about his ideas and Darwin s letters to Lyell and his grandfather s influence in theory of evolution,
this essay will attempt to demonstrate that lone geniuses in science history are illusions to make up for a good story to tell to engage students in class. Even
during his time, Isaac Newton was recognized and greatly respected by people within various scholarly fields. Alexander Pope claimed Newton as the light to
the dark and mysteriousness laws of nature in his poem. (1 Pg. 161) However, it is rarely glorified that Newton was not a distinguished scholar when he was

criticized and appreciated constantly within the scientific societies of the time. Edmund Halley, the discover of comet and Newton s colleague, communicated
about elliptical orbits and angular momentum of planets with Newton (Pg137). This made Newton questions his own theories about planetary motion and thus
eventually lead him to publish Philosophiae Nauturalis Principia Mathematica . In the book, he structured his argument to disprove Descartes theory and

Explain Why Strip Mining Is Bad For The Environment
Strip mining is terrible for the earth. In the US, from 1930 to 2000, coal mining altered about 2.4 million hectares (5.9 million acres) of natural landscape, most
originally forest.
That is how trees we cut down and and don t use for anything but for coal. That is how much we are cutting down of air cleaners. Those forests also factored in
wildlife for some animals that live there. This is only one reason why strip mining is bad for the environment.
Did you know what strip mining does to forests. Instead of having nice landscapes we have flat landes. It could be for artists or it can be for mountain
climbing. We are also cutting down our fresh air suppliers. Later in the future we will have less fresh air so we will have to make

Statistics and Decision-Making in Hrm
STATISTICS AND DECISION MAKING IN HRM
(word count 1155)
The word statistics has a Latin origin where the word status means state. Statistics is defined as the science that helps us understand how to collect, organize
and interpret numbers or other information (data) about some topic (Bennett, et al., 2003). It is a discipline of data collection and summarizing to aid
understanding and decision making. It is also concerned with evaluation of the present status and predicting the future (Stockberger, 1996). Statistics studies
the nature of a relationship between two or more variables of interest by using the numerical statistical data. Moreover only statistics makes it possible to
analyze these relationships (Kachigan, 1986).

From the company management perspective statistics help managers to convert data into information which enables to accept informed decisions (Levin and
Rubin, 1997). Thus statistics helps to manage the organizational functions in a company. Such management science procedures as project evaluation and
review techniques and critical path method help to control and plan not only company projects and initiatives but take adequate people related decisions
belonging to the functional area of Human Resource Management. HRM function involves activities such as recruitment, training, performance assessment,
reward and motivation. Productivity of these activities to a great extent is predetermined by the wide use of statistical tools. By using statistics, HR forecasts
the needs in terms of required number of employees and their level of qualification. For the recruitment of new staff the tests are conducted to assess the
candidates on merit basis. Validity of various HR tests can be assessed by means of statistical tools. Statistical analysis of test results helps to reveal
deficiencies in employee training programs and to assess the compensation program to determine whether they are reliable and support the organisation s
performance objectives. Regular employee performance appraisals based on statistical methods are important for making HR decisions regarding
compensation and promotion.

It would be a good idea to change your feelings, looks, beliefs, or actions because you could have friends just like you, you can be different but be yourself. It

Voltaire s Candide And Swift s Gulliver s Travels
From someone deciding to snooze their alarm an extra time in the morning to deciding if they should marry their significant other, every decision a person
makes will create either a positive or negative effect on their life. This statement is evident in both Voltaire s Candide and Swift s Gulliver s Travels. Candide is
a satire that was published in 1759 by the French author and philosopher, François Marie Arouet, better known as Voltaire. Gulliver s Travels is also a satire
that was published in 1726 by Anglo Irish author, Jonathan Swift. In these two stories; no matter how big or small a decision is, it will inevitably have an effect
on the character s quality of life, even if it is not completely apparent at the time.

To reiterate Pangloss s beliefs that this world is the best of possible worlds he also claims that there is no effect without a cause. Pangloss uses simple
examples in the beginning of the story to demonstrate what he means. He states: that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for all being created for an
end, all is necessarily for the best end. Observe, that the nose has been formed to bear spectacles thus we have spectacles. Legs are visibly designed for
stockings and we have stockings (18). This statement is illogical and quite humorous, as one would think spectacles were made for the nose and stockings
were made for legs, not vice versa. Anyway, this whole story is based on cause and effect. Every single decision Candide makes affects him in some type of
way later in the story. Nevertheless, it is not obvious what the outcome of the majority of his decisions will be, as this story has many twists and random
outcomes.
It all starts at the castle of Thunder ten tronckh where young Candide lays a kiss on Cunégonde. One might believe kissing your love would lead to good things
to come, however, it is the complete opposite. The effect of this cause results in Candide being banished from the castle to defend himself alone. When

Abstract
Texans believe that participating in the Texas Lottery helps the Texas Education Foundation but little do they know; how much money actually goes to the
Texas Education Foundation. The effect of the Texas Lottery is causing more of a negative impact on Texans than the Education Foundation is benefiting.
The Texas Lottery negatively impacts the people that play the lottery and the programs that are supposed to benefit from the proceeds. Because of the big
dream of winning, the lottery has taken a toll on Texans. People believe that the Texas Lottery is their only chance to strike it rich (Buckland, 2010). There is

Texans voted for a constitutional amendment that allowed funds of the lottery to be dedicated to education funding. But the Texas Legislature examined
Lottery funds of other states including California and Florida who had dedicated lottery money to the education and discovered that these states had less
money for education. Critics from this era believed that states without lotteries collected fewer taxes than the states with lotteries. (Heines amp; Tinsley 1997).
In 2009, a great amount of the stimulus funds were designated for education spending. The 91 billion dollars that was supported by this fund did not cover the
total federal spending on education of the years 2008 to 2009 which summed up to be 667 billion dollars. An estimation of 570 billion dollars was not
supported by the total education bill of federal spending. It costs an estimated 35 billion dollars to cover kindergarten through twelfth grade on a yearly basis.
(Voice,2011).
Texas law says lottery proceeds are supposed to go toward education (Oberg 2011). The lottery has only given one billion dollars every year to Texas Schools
since 1998, but since lottery sales have become greater, the lottery has not been giving more money to the Texas schools. Even with the lottery earnings
increasing the amount of money applied towards the Education Fund has not shown the difference of cash increase. One of the reasons why education is not

Implementing A Sustainable Society Out Of Our Own Country
For my sustainable society I redesigned the central United States and set up new rules, regulations and a code of responsibility for U.S citizens to start abiding
by in order to become sustainable by reducing carbon emissions and becoming more of a community based society. I choose to do the U.S because I thought I
was an interesting task to think about what it would take to make a sustainable society out of our own country. The U.S is the second top producer of CO2
emissions in the world and it directly correlates without dependency on fossil fuels for producing energy. (EPA, 2008). This is why my first thought about
creating a sustainable society out of the U.S then we would have to greatly reduce, and if not that, totally abolish natural gas production in the U.S. Obviously
in a real life setting this would seem that it would tear the country apart however I think the solution would be to start encouraging and rewarding those
individuals and organizations that a using renewable energy and give them things such as take breaks and government funding. At the same time we would
need to stop subsidizing gas slowly over time in order to make it more appealing to the average American to switch from natural gas. Renewable energy
companies would be able to create enough jobs to replace those in the natural gas industry. According to the International Renewable Energy Association
renewable energy has already created over 7.7 million jobs worldwide (IRENA, 2016). The U.S gas and oil

Inmate Suicide In Jail
In American jails there is a frightening amount of inmate suicides that occur, and seem to stay under the radar and unspoken about. There are many different
contributing factors that can lead to an inmate ultimately choosing to take his or her own life. Being sentenced to jail can be difficult for various inmates to
handle and one can have a risk of developing a mental illness if he or she has not already been diagnosed as mentally ill. A mental illness can become a battle
with one s self that some cannot win, and only see darkness ahead. Inmates being confined in jail can lead to a breaking point, which is suicide. Other factors
include inmates being stressed out and fearing imprisonment. Jails across the United States have to take initiative regarding inmate suicides or else the suicide
rates could increase. Without treatment, awareness, and prevention there will be no improvement in decreasing the amount of inmate suicides. The
conversation of inmate suicide has to be had between jail officials, inmates, and society because there is help out there and everyone must know that it is not

In the Archaic Age, beauty is sought by the citizens of Greece all throughout the various forms of artistic expression. For example, Greek sculptures before the
Archaic Age were widely influenced by the mesopotamians and egyptians, with rigid postures and ceremonious gestures. However, in the Archaic Age, we see
a little more change throughout the art of sculpting in Greece. Greek sculptors began incorporating lively, athletic, and healthy attributes to the work of art,
such as the Anavysos Kouros, (page 52) a Greek korari sculpture based by the Archaic Age. Health and beauty in art was commenced in the Hellenic Era,

  • 6. Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William... Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks as red as rose, or eyes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Legacy Of The Emancipation Proclamation When it comes to Abraham Lincoln people will accept anything as factual, which is why all the myths of Lincoln have actually dominated history for so long. Many believe that the Emancipation Proclamation is solely about honest Abe being a just man and freeing all the slaves with his executive power as sitting president. Lincoln himself stated that it was actually a war tactic strategically planned to cripple the south. If Lincoln s 1863 article is so dedicated to the freeing of slaves then why were union states like Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri and West Virginia allowed to still participate in keeping their slaves? And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free. which is an excerpt from the Emancipation Proclamation itself which shows that a lot of people don t read it well enough to notice that the slaves were an actual afterthought. Maybe it s because they are so caught up in the notation that Lincoln was about slave s equality and nothing more. The common myth that Lincolns parents left the slave state of Kentucky to head to Indiana ,which was free at the time, because they were so against the idea of slavery, is nothing more but another situation where we put two things together and make something completely out of context. • 9. The Pros And Cons Of Government Regulations The creation, amendment, rejection or repealing of rules can be defined as rulemaking. Rules are utilized by numerous sections of the government following a passed statue from Congress which can also be referred to as regulations. Regulations do not begin in the executive branch of government where agencies developed. They are created in the Congress, where they are the factors for the establishment of the agency involved or function of an agency. The rules start with a legislative act of Congress. Congress has enacted laws such as the Administrative Procedure Act, the Regulatory Flexibility Act, the Paperwork Reduction Act, and the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act that require some type of procedure, review, and/or analysis of draft rules by the rule making agencies themselves or by outside parties (COPELAND, 2008). Federal government agencies can issue more than four thousand completed rules each year. These cover ever agency of government. The creation and implementation of rules costs hundreds of billions of dollars. These are not part of the federal budget process and some think these are greater than the cost of all federal domestic discretionary spending. A particular agency can be mandated by Congress once a statue is passed requiring that agency to develop a specific rule/rules to concede the statute requirements. • 12. Summary Of The Tale Of Genji Jordan Adams 11/25/14 World Civilization I MacKinnon Text Analysis The Tale of Genji In early eleventh century Japan, circa the year 1021, noblewoman and lady in waiting Murasaki Shikibu published The Tale of Genji, widely renowned as the world s first novel. The work is set in Shikibu s contemporary Heian period of Japan, in which political and social ranks dictated society s functioning and heavy prejudices were placed on those deemed unsuitable for the affairs of public court life. Women fell under this umbrella of outsiders, meant to live primarily behind screens and closed doors only to be seen by their father and husband. It is believed that Shikibu wrote such a tale of forbidden romance and whimsical court affairs to bring life to her fellow women who shared in such a limited existence. This single piece of literature manages to wholly represent the Heian age of Japanese history, embodying the period s culture and seamlessly incorporating a broad spectrum of themes of civilization. The Tale of Genji revolves around the illegitimate son of Japan s emperor and his favorite concubine Kiritsubo. Kiritsubo is easily influenced by the critics and judgments of the court, falls ill, and dies of jealously. With her having no concrete political standing, the emperor removes their son from court and assigns him to the commoner Genji clan (thus giving the boy his name) and names Suzaku, the son he had with Lady Kokiden as the royal prince. • 17. A Star s Temperature And Luminosity Analysis According to the book, If you know a star s temperature and luminosity, you can determine its radius (Seeds 151). The luminosity of a star is related to its absolute magnitude, and its spectral class has a relation to the star s temperature. So, in order to estimate the size of Betelgeuse, we would need both its luminosity (in which we can substitute its absolute magnitude) and its temperature (spectral class), which we have been provided. The absolute magnitude refers to the brightness of a star if it were 10 pc away (Seeds 145), and the lower the number the brighter the star (and vice versa). According to the spectral sequence, which goes O, B, A, F, G, K, then M, O stars are the hottest...M stars, the coolest (Seeds 148), with M stars being orange/red in color. Well, there is only one explanation: Although they are cool, they are luminous, and that must mean they are larger and have more surface area than main sequence stars of the same temperature (Seeds 154). This means that Betelgeuse is a red giant, which are roughly 10 to 100 times larger than the sun (Seeds 154). In fact, according to the H R diagram on page 155, Betelgeuse is even considered a supergiant, which are over a thousand times the sun s diameter (Seeds 154). Jake spends a year manufacturing hundreds of Backhills, by hand, in hopes that he sells 50 boards per day. He only sells 300 for the 78 79 season. He sold most of those by going door to door. My second year out, I hit rock bottom financially. I was taking my boards door to door like Willy Loman, but no one was buying. I remember one trip when I loaded my station wagon with 35 boards and came back with 37 because one of the shop owners returned two he had previously bought. It was depressing. • 25. Heritage And Selfishness In Everyday Use By Alice Walker Everyday Use is a short story written by Alice Walker that tells the story of two sisters that choose diverse lifestyles that cause them to view heritage differently. Walker portrays two characters whose views on heritage contrast each other. Dee is a woman who bases her views on material items and other people s opinions. Maggie, on the other hand, is a humble, down home woman that creates her own perspective of heritage. Because these characters go down different paths, there is a disparity between what they think heritage actually is. This allows Walker to develop the differences between Dee and Maggie through indirect characterization. Dee manifests the characteristic of selfish throughout the short story, which is clear through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result of her lack of knowing what heritage really is, she thinks that the quilts will bring her closer to her culture. Dee s absence of knowledge of what heritage actually is heritage and her selfishness is shown through her actions and interactions. Though Maggie has never been shown the type of love her sister has, her actions are kind and compassionate when she tries to read to her mother. Maggie, who is not a very skillful reader herself, attempts to read to her illiterate mother. The author reads, Sometimes Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along good naturedly but can t see well. She knew she wasn t very bright (Walker 53). Though Mama has never shown Maggie affection quite like she has Dee, Maggie still tries to read to her even though she is not a proficient reader. Unlike her selfish sister, Maggie selflessly puts the needs of others before her own and her actions verify her benevolence. Furthermore, even after Maggie s mom continues to show more affection to Dee,she continues to show compassion through her feelings about a quilt Dee is trying to take away from Maggie. • 26. Analysis Of Coming Of Age In Mississippi By Anne Moody The book Coming of Age in Mississippi is a memoir written by Anne Moody. The book recounts her experiences as a young black woman in the Civil Rights Movement, and gives a firsthand account of many of the historical events during that time period, such as sit ins, protests, and civil unrest. Anne Moody was a vocal activist and member of organizations such as the NAACP, who spoke out against racism and segregation. Born in 1940 in rural Mississippi, Anne lives with her parents and her sister Adline in a two room shack that does not have electricity or plumbing. At the end of the school year, Mrs. Rice is indeed fired, but Anne does not know why, and she does not see her again. Still, Mrs. Rice s impact on Anne was the catalyst that led Anne into the civil rights movement, as she learned that there were things she could do to try to change the way things were. Another important woman is Mrs. Burke, Anne s racist employer. Mrs. Burke does Anne no favors, but through working for her, Anne s eyes are opened to the hostility of whites. Mrs. Burke accuses Anne s younger brother of stealing from her, even though he is innocent. This event leads to Anne quitting the job and choosing to work as a waitress instead of a maid. She wants to use her earnings to pay for college, so that she may become educated. Finally, Anne s stepmother plays a significant role in Anne s life. After Anne leaves her mother s home to move in with her father, she develops a bond with her stepmother, Emma, who is kind and friendly. A Historical Background On Science And Mathematics Time and again, when referring to a historical background of a topic in science or math, we have been exposed to only a handful of key figures and even fewer notable events without any social or cultural context behind it. Such details are often overlooked and taught without the perspective of the era and why it occurred at the time. There maybe several reasons for such dismissal. Within the STEAM subjects, especially science and mathematics, the content strives to be empirical and concrete without influence of culture, race, gender or era in time. In the US, from 1930 to 2000, coal mining altered about 2.4 million hectares (5.9 million acres) of natural landscape, most originally forest. That is how trees we cut down and and don t use for anything but for coal. That is how much we are cutting down of air cleaners. Those forests also factored in wildlife for some animals that live there. This is only one reason why strip mining is bad for the environment. Did you know what strip mining does to forests. Observe, that the nose has been formed to bear spectacles thus we have spectacles. Legs are visibly designed for stockings and we have stockings (18). This statement is illogical and quite humorous, as one would think spectacles were made for the nose and stockings were made for legs, not vice versa. Implementing A Sustainable Society Out Of Our Own Country For my sustainable society I redesigned the central United States and set up new rules, regulations and a code of responsibility for U.S citizens to start abiding by in order to become sustainable by reducing carbon emissions and becoming more of a community based society. I choose to do the U.S because I thought I was an interesting task to think about what it would take to make a sustainable society out of our own country. The U.S is the second top producer of CO2 emissions in the world and it directly correlates without dependency on fossil fuels for producing energy. (EPA, 2008). This is why my first thought about creating a sustainable society out of the U.S then we would have to greatly reduce, and if not that, totally abolish natural gas production in the U.S. Obviously in a real life setting this would seem that it would tear the country apart however I think the solution would be to start encouraging and rewarding those individuals and organizations that a using renewable energy and give them things such as take breaks and government funding. At the same time we would need to stop subsidizing gas slowly over time in order to make it more appealing to the average American to switch from natural gas.
