For my civic or political participation, I volunteered with CPS s GIV day for a poverty simulation.
This is a half a day on the Friday of orientation week is available to first year s students. The students
are able to learn about civic issues like poverty and how Gettysburg College works with the issue and
community. As a member of Gettysburg College, I have volunteered with CPS in many capacities and
have done the poverty simulation as a first year. I also choose this engagement because I have
volunteered or participated in it every year except when I was abroad. This opportunity also allowed
me to complete five of my required hours for my sorority and service fraternity. At the end, GIV day I
an amazing way to get involved on campus, and be reminds about key issues that affect the
community and world.
First year students will come to the College Union Buildings Ballroom on the Friday of Orientation
with little to no idea what they are going to experience for half of the day. They will be assigned a
discussion table, a community group number, and a poverty simulation table number. The day is spit
up in half, where for the first half of the students will go to the community site and the other will go
through the poverty simulation. After both are done, the group will switch.

In the short story The Harvest by Amy Hempel, an unnamed narrator is in a horrible car accident,
where her leg is permanently disfigured. The story takes place after the accident, when the narrator is
attempting to process the life changing event that s just happened to her. The story is broken up into
two parts,in the first part she describes the accident and the aftermath the accident, the hospital, the
recovery. But she opens the second half of the story by admitting that not everything we just read is
factual. The struggle she is having throughout the story is to cope with and understand her accident,
but her emotional distress inhibits that. The narrator conveys her instability and vulnerability that the
accident caused in through the ways she decides to alter the details of her story. Although she goes
through the process of reflecting on why she does this, she doesn t come out the other side feeling less
confused about why her accident happened to her, or any less unstable and vulnerable. Throughout the
story she struggles to figure out which details are important to convey the emotional distress she feels.
The narrator opens the story by saying The year I began to say Vahz instead of Vase, a man I barely
knew nearly accidentally killed me . In this quote she is comparing the mundane and trivial, to a
tragedy very few people face.This demonstrates that she is unstable because she doesn t know where
the severity of her situation lies. Her use of the words ... barely knew nearly accidentally... so close
together shows that she s hesitant to move on from the mundane, and accept the fact that she was
almost killed. As she struggles to understand what happened to her, she over and under exaggerates to
get her truth across. After describing the accident she says The five days they didn t know if they
could save my leg or not I stretched to ten . She exaggerates and changes the details of what happened
to her because she wants to cope with the trauma she s experienced by garnering the sympathy that
comes with the higher number. because it happened to her she has to exaggerate the anguish she felt
because even though five days is a very long time to be uncertain about a leg staying attached but
