Editor's Notes

  1. When you walk into a theater, classroom, or auditorium (and assuming that there are no other influential factors), which side do you prefer? right = R left = L When taking a test, which style of questions do you prefer? L= objective (true/false, multiple choice, matching) R = subjective (discussion) Do you often have hunches? R= yes L= No When you have hunches, do you follow them? R = Yes L = No Do you have a place for everything and keep everything in its place? R = No L = Yes When you are learning a dance step, is it easier for you to: R = learn by imitation the teacher and getting the feel of the music? L = learn the sequence of movements and talk your way through the steps? Do you like to move your furniture several times a year, or do you prefer to keep the same arrangement? L = keep R = Move Can you tell approximately how much time passed without a watch? L = yes R = No Speaking in strictly relative terms, is it easier for you to understand L = algebra? R = geometry? Is it easier for you to remember people's names or to remember people's faces? L = Names R = faces When given the topic "school", would you prefer to express your feelings through drawings or writing? R = drawing L = writing When someone is talking to you, do you respond to the word meaning, or do you respond to the person's word pitch and feelings? L = word meaning (what is said) R = word pitch and feeling (how it is said) When speaking, do you use few gestures, or do you use many gestures (that is, do you use your hands when you talk)? L = few gestures ( very seldom use hands when you talk) R = many gestures (often use hands when you talk) Your desk or where you work is L = neat and organized. R = cluttered with stuff that you might need. Is it easier for you to read for main ideas or to read for specific details? R = main ideas L = specific details Do you do your best thinking sitting erect or lying down? L = sitting erect R = lying down< Do you feel more comfortable saying/doing humorous things or saying/doing well-reasoned things? R = humorous things L = well-reasoned things In math L = you can explain how you got the answer. R = you can get the answer but cannot explain how.
  2. Hand model: make model and notice right and left sides. In 95% of right-handers, the left side of the brain is dominant for language. Even in 60-70% of left-handers, the left side of brain is used for language. No-one has come up with a definitive reason for WHY some people are left-handed, but about 10% of the population around the world are. No gene for left-handedness has been identified, but it does seem to run strongly in families. Back in the 1860's and 1870's, two neurologists (Paul Broca and Karl Wernicke) observed that when people had damage to a particular area on the left side of the brain that they had speech and language problems. They noticed that people with damage to these specific areas on the right side usually did not have any language problems. The two language areas of the brain that are important for language now bear their names: Broca's area and Wernicke's area.
  3. Make hand model and rub knuckles together…say cor-pus-cal-los-um
  4. Left - starting at 20 months before this language is in both Hemispheres
  5. Vision exercise : http://www.web-us.com/brain/Visual_Test_Hemispheric_Dominance.htm Hemisphere test : http://www.web-us.com/brain/braindominance.htm
  6. Much of what we know about the right and left hemispheres comes from studies in people who have had the corpus callosum split - this surgical operation isolates most of the right hemisphere from the left hemisphere. This type of surgery is performed in patients suffering from epilepsy. The corpus callosum is cut to prevent the spread of the "epileptic seizure" from one hemisphere to the other. Roger Sperry (who won the Nobel prize in 1981) and Michael Gazzaniga are two neuroscientists who studied patients who had surgery to cut the corpus callosum. These studies are called "Split-Brain Experiments". After surgery, these people appeared quite "normal" - they could walk, read, talk, play sports and do all the everyday things they did before surgery. Only after careful experiments that isolated information from reaching one hemisphere, could the real effects of the surgery be determined. So, say a "typical" (language in the LEFT hemisphere) split-brain patient is sitting down, looking straight ahead and is focusing on a dot in the middle of a screen. Then a picture of a spoon is flashed to the right of the dot. The visual information about the spoon crosses in the optic chiasm and ends up in the LEFT HEMISPHERE. When the person is asked what the picture was, the person has no problem identifying the spoon and says "Spoon." However, if the spoon had been flashed to the left of the dot (see the picture), then the visual information would have traveled to the RIGHT HEMISPHERE. Now if the person is asked what the picture was, the person will say that nothing was seen!! But, when this same person is asked to pick out an object using only the LEFT hand, this person will correctly pick out the spoon. This is because touch information from the left hand crosses over to the right hemisphere - the side that "saw" the spoon. However, if the person is again asked what the object is, even when it is there in the person's hand, the person will NOT be able to say what it is because the right hemisphere cannot "talk." So, the right hemisphere is not stupid, it just has little ability for language - it is "non-verbal."
  7. http://www.focuseducation.com.au/CoolStuff/coolstuff.html IE: Hearing auditory and verbal stimulation increase Left Brain capabilities Caution: (endangered minds) less language use and less reflection of children today may decrease left hemisphere development Still debate about exactly when hemispheres become specialized: prenatal exposure to hormones; hormones at puberty that influence specialization; environment; combo
  8. Language: Left :speech, sound grammar, verbal concepts Right: single word meanings, pitch, gesture, social interactions
  9. Draw what you see Dr. Edwards discovered quite by accident that drawing upside down helps free us from the left brain stereotypical symbols. She was trying to teach art to a noisy, unwilling group of high school students. In desparation she cried, "Just turn this drawing upside down and copy it." Within a few minutes the class became miraculously quite, each student totally concentrated on the drawing. When the students turned their finished drawing right side up, they were very surprised at the results they had achieved.
  10. One hemisphere setting the tone IE. Puzzle Analytic = having each piece and assembly in a logical order wholistic = work from and outline using visual clues
  11. Really, Children are whole brain learners
  12. Hormone: testosterone delays development of left hemisphere Natural selection: division of labor Environment: hearing and touch develop faster in girls (LH) sight (RH)develops faster in boys Women more time inside and language activities men outside and visual There is such confusion about this matter! Let me simplify - the verbal, sorting, detail-oriented side of the brain is the left, whereas the spatial intuitive nonverbal side is the right. Who is more verbal, the average man or woman? By a wide margin, of course, the answer is the woman. She speaks twice as many words as the man and has done so even before the age of two. Boys and men are much more nonverbal, usually preferring physical spatial activities even as small toddlers. So the evidence is clear that women hang out more in their left brains, whereas men tend to hang out more in their right brains. Am I saying that beer-guzzling/ TV-glued/ sex-driven man in your life is more intuitive than you, the average woman? Yes, for he senses a situation and takes action intuitively (though his responses may be very restricted). He does not go through a long internal verbal process in choosing his path - he reacts, knowing it is right for him to do so. Intuition is defined (Oxford, 1980, s.v. "intuition") as "the power of knowing or understanding something immediately without reason or being taught." He responds immediately with sexual feeling to sex objects (no planning or long decision making process for him in these matters). This is an immediate response to his sexual feelings (i.e., right brain work). If you say something he doesn't want to hear, he will not respond verbally, but spatially as he moves to the TV to watch hockey reruns. He senses your words are wrong for him, and his intuitive response is to move away. As a woman, on the other hand, you may have long debates in your head before you come to make a decision or take some action. Such internal thinking and debating are left brain activities. Note to Women. Men are not generally as comfortable on the verbal side of their brains as you are. When you say to them "let's talk," you are asking them to join you in an activity in which most men feel somewhat inferior to you. As soon as possible, many men therefore will opt out of talking to return to their preferred nonverbal spatial activities. For example Time magazine was reported to state in 1992 that the corpus callosum is "Often wider in the brains of women than in those of men, it may allow for greater cross-talk between the hemispheres—possibly the basis for woman’s intuition."[3] It has also been used, for example, as the explanation of an increased single-task orientation of male, relative to female, learners; a smaller male corpus is said to make it harder for the left and right sides of the brain to work together and to explain a greater feminine ability to multitask. More research needed in this area! We should keep in mind the words of the 18th-century British writer who was once asked, “Which is smarter, men or women?” He replied: “Which man, which woman?” Don’t stereotype - reasons not as important as response school more LH friendly (verbal structured) IE: math starts LH (arithmetic moves to RH (algebra& geometry) We connect + or - experiences with math in amydala
  13. More that both hemispheres and all lobes are activated by use, the more dendritic connections form across the corpus callosum The more connections, the faster the processing between both hemispheres and the more elegantly we engage the whole brain.
