Respiratory system for kids

1. THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

2. The respiratory system collects oxygen and
gets rid (expel) carbon dioxide.
The combination of oxygen and nutrients
makes the energy for our body.
Oxygen + nutrients= energy

4. 1. Nose and mouth
When we breathe in, air enters the nose
and mouth. Then, it goes to the pharynx
and trachea (windpipe).

5. 2. The trachea and the bronchi ( 1 bronchus =
two bronchi)
The trachea is divided into two bronchi.
Bronchi are divided into many bronchioles.

6. Bronchioles are like the branches of a tree.

7. At the end of each bronchiole there is a small bag called alveolus.
Alveoli are covered with lots of capillaries.
Some capillaries carry oxygen (red) and other capillaries carry
carbon dioxide (blue).
3. The alveoli (1 alveolus = many alveoli)

8. 4. The exchange of gases
The capillaries that
are in red absorb
oxygen. This oxygen
goes to the arteries
and arteries
carry/transport it to
the rest of the body.
The capillaries that
are in blue absorb
carbon dioxide.

9. 5. Carbon dioxide is released
The carbon dioxide goes from the
capillaries to the alveoli.
Then it goes to the bronchioles and
then to the bronchi.
After that it goes up to the trachea.
Finally, it is released through the
mouth and nose.

10. 5. The diaphragm
It is a muscle. As
every muscle, it
contracts and relaxes.

11. When we breathe in:
- The diaphragm contracts.
- The diaphragm moves down.
- The ribs expand.
- This is called inhalation.

12. When we breathe out:
- The diaphragm relaxes.
- The diaphragm moves up.
- The ribs go down.
- This is called exhalation.
