RESPIRATORY
 SYSTEM

RESPIRATION
• a life process common to
    both plants and animals

• There is an exchange of
  oxygen and carbon dioxide
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Phases of Respiration

• External Respiration
 –Exchange of gases between
  the atmosphere and the
  blood
• This involves the lungs
Phases of Respiration

Internal Respiration
 Exchange of gas
  between the blood and
  the body tissues
Breathing
-a mechanical process that helps
get air into and out of the lungs
STAGES
1. INSPIRATION –intake of air

2. EXPIRATION – breathing out
of air
PARTS OF THE
    RESPIRATORY
      • Nasal cavity
         • Larynx
        • Trachea
    • Bronchial tubes
• Lungs (bronchioles and
          alveoli)
NOSE
NOSE
• Serves as the entrance to your nasal
  cavity
• Inside the nasal cavities are cilia
which filters the air and trap the any
  microorganisms
• A ciliated mucous membrane is also
found in the lining of the nasal cavity
NASAL CAVITY
LARYNX
LARYNX
• Also called Adams apple or
  vocal cords
• Passage way of air we breath

• It is protected by a muscle
  known as epiglottis
TRACHEA
TRACHEA
• Also called as the windpipe
• Lined with cilia and fluid that
  traps germs and other
  materials from the air
• Cilia also traps dust and dirt
  upward away from the lungs
LUNGS
LUNGS
• located on each side of the
  chest
• They are separated by your
  heart, blood vessels and your
  esophagus
• Serves as an organ for breathing
BRONCHIAL TUBES
        • Branches of
          the trachea
          that is
          embedded in
          the lungs
BRONCHIOLES
      Small
      branches
      of bronchi
ALVEOLI
     • Also known
       as the air
       sacs
     • It is where
       the
       exchange of
       gases
       happen
