This document discusses what constitutes a good research problem and the criteria for selecting one. It states that a research problem should arise from a practical or theoretical issue that needs investigation. Not all problems are researchable, as some involve individual preferences or values that cannot be scientifically identified. A good research problem should not be too vague or narrow, provide an overview of the subject, and make a general concept more specific. It also notes that a research problem must have an empirical basis. Finally, it outlines four key questions - what, why, how, and when - that underpin any research problem framework.

Selection and formulation of a research problem.pptxGeorgeKabongah2
One of the greatest challenges faced by researchers is resource and time constraints. This makes it difficult to involve the entire population of interest and so researchers only use a subset of a population to represent the whole population. This is called a sample. The use of samples however involves other big class of problems: given that your measurements are credible, how much of the world do they represent? How far can you generalize the results of your research? The answer depends, first, on the kind of data in which you are interested. There are two kinds of data of interest to social scientists: individual attribute data and cultural data. These two kinds require different approaches to sampling and that is the focus of this week.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

CRITERIA AND
CHARACTERISTICS

2. WHAT IS A RESEARCH
PROBLEM?
In the context of selection of a research problem it is
essential to understand what is a problem and its
components.
A research problem is one which may arise in practice or
theory, which needs some solution by way of investigation.
The next question that comes up is – are all problems
researchable?
3. ARE ALL PROBLEMS
RESEARCHABLE?
Is daily star the most read newspaper?
Is a Jackson Pollock painting beautiful or dreadful?
Do supernatural entities intervene in human affairs?
Not all human behavior can be guided by scientific knowledge.
4. RESEARCH PROBLEMS
SHOULD :
Not be too vague or too narrow
Have an overview of the subject
Make a general concept more specific by showing its
dimensions, aspects, factors, components or indicators.
The important thing is that the finished product, as a piece of
research ,shows logical conclusions across the different levels
of abstraction.
5. RESEARCH PROBLEMS
SHOULD :
Problems that do not have empirical ground are do not
fulfill the criteria of a research problem. Have an overview
of the subject
Reasons behind………..
1. individual preference,
2. beliefs,
3. traditions,
4. customs
5. and values
cannot be identified by research problems.
6. THE ANSWERS TO FOUR IMPORTANT
QUESTIONS UNDERPIN THE FRAMEWORK
FOR ANY RESEARCH PROBLEM
What are you going to do?
The title and aim of the research should answer this.
• Elaboration on the purpose and outcome is also needed.
Clarity is essential
Why are you going to do it?
this answer should explain why the research is necessary.
Also be able to state how the outcomes of the research
should provide the solutions to the problems revealed.
Explain the severity of the problem
7. Four important questions contd.
How are you going to do it?
A plan of action laid out to show how the problem is to be
investigated.
What methodology was undertaken.
How the information was analyzed.
When are you going to do it?
Programming your time.
By considering all these issues a problem will be researchable!
