In fact, the film s cast, as well as the filmmaker Kiran Rao and her husband, the Bollywood actor

Slavery Vs Indentured Servants Essay
Slavery and Indentured servitude were vital to the success of the British colonies in several different
ways. The difference between slaves and servants is that slaves were owed for life or until their master
decided to let them leave or they died. Indentured servants were granted freedom, safe passage to the
country and land ownership after working the length of their contract, as previously agreed upon. One
of the main reasons slaves and indentured servants were so vital to the British colonies is that they
were cheap and effective labor. They were able to work in the fields planting, fertilizing, watering and
picking the crop when it was ready to be harvested for consumption or profit. Due to the fast harvests,
the Americans were able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1705 there were not many indentures servants anymore. The British colonies started hiring slaves
due to the fact that they were owned for life and they didn t have to be let go due to their contracts
expiring. Slaves also had less rights than indentured servants due to the changes in the slave laws. The
Americans justified enslaving Africans in several ways. The Americans thought less of them; that they
weren t even human but personal property to do with as they pleased. These views all came in to
account due to their skin color being darker. The American s thought they were evil since they were so
dark complected. That they were stupid and couldn t make their own way in the world. They would
make them work long hours in horrible conditions such as out in field all day in the hot sun without
breaks. Their living conditions were horrible, they weren t allowed medical care and were not fed on a
consistent basis. They were beaten, killed and many of the women were sexually abused by their
masters. Many of the slaves died due to malnourishment and disease. The American colonists justified
their actions by viewing that they were taking care of them by providing food, shelter and a means to
live by. That without them they would still be in Africa starving, homeless and

Cisco s An Information Age Company
Cisco Case Write Up
1. Compare and contrast the use of IT in an information Age company versus that in an industrial Age
company? Is Cisco an Information Age company? Why? The Industrial Age company is a traditional
company, which believes in uniformity, stability, permanence, security, and competition; however, the
Information Age company is totally contrasted. The Information Age company focuses on diversity,
cooperation, flexibility, motivation for cooperating, and communication by using information over e
commerce. The impact of control of information and how it is creating super valuable companies like
Apple, Google and Facebook can be seen during these days. Each company controls massive amounts
of data on consumers, creates products that leverage that information, and delivers services that are
therefore irresistible.
Cisco is clearly the one of Information Age companies. Cisco gives the priority on the Information
Technology. In the case study, Cisco adopted strategy of systematic acquisitions and strategic partners,
which proof that Cisco focuses on cooperated information. Cisco also concerned about
standardization, flexibility, extensibility, and scalability. The decisions that Solvik and his team made
during this case trends to emphasize how more Cisco becomes closer to the definition of Information
Age company. They applied internet and intranet which is not so popular at that year for employee self

There are several organizations that have competitive advantages in the industry. However, one
familiar organization that has maintained its competitive advantage in its industry is the Ritz Carlton
hotel. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, United States of America, Ritz
Carlton hotel is one of the best in the hotel industry and has received several accolades for great
customer services (Ritz Carlton Hotels Resorts, n.d.). Nevertheless, to fully understand its competitive
advantage in the industry, it is essential to analyze how the organization operates. The Ritz Carlton
hotel management understands the value of employees; therefore, investing in their managerial
training to enhance efficiency. The organization has a leadership training center, where mentors train
employees on the act of innovation in the hotel industry; therefore, differentiating the organization

Examples Of Gods And Myths Of Northern Europe
Gods and Myths of Northern Europe , by Hilda R.E. Davidson.
Gods and Myths of Northern Europe tries to explain the richness of the myths from Northern Europe.
It tries to show us how their gods and goddesses, the Norsemen, and the Germanic people before
them, were related. I don t share all of her conclusions, but I think that this book is an interesting and
valuable read to everyone interested in learning about this wonderful world and their people. I think
that the best way to learn about the ones that were living in that times is to know their myths and their
relationship to their gods and goddesses. Reading this could help you understand how they saw their

A Position Within The Political Communications Field
1. Introduction: This paper will focus on a position within the Political Communications field.
Political Communications is a sub field incorporating both political science and communications
disciplines; dealing with the production, and distribution of effects of information, both through the
use of media interpersonally and within a political context (Norris, 2004). The process operates
downwards from governing institutions towards citizens, horizontally in connection among different
political actors, and also upwards from general public opinion towards authoritative figures (Norris,
2004). For the sake of this paper, there will be a particular focus on the position of Director of
Communications held by Steve Kee at the Insurance Bureau of Canada. 2. Background: Established in
1964, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (also known as the IBC) is the leading national industry
organization representing Canada s private home, auto and business insurance (Insurance Bureau of
Canada, 2016). The IBC has worked on a number of fronts, by means of increasing public
understanding of the different divisions of insurance (Insurance Bureau of Canada, 2016). Its goal is to
make communities, both small and large, safer, while championing issues directly affecting Canadians
(Insurance Bureau of Canada, 2016). As of 1997, the merging of both the Insurance Bureau of Canada

Madama Butterfly Analysis
Italian opera of the 19th century was deeply rooted in national life. Italy was unified under Victor
Emmanuel II in 1859 61, and verismo was the popular form of composing operas at this time.
Verismo, or realism, is a phase of naturalism in literature and music characterized by projection on
stage of fierce passions, violence, and death. Operas of the verismo style paint a picture of everyday
people that were mainly from the middle class, doing extraordinary things. An example of this is
Puccini s Madama Butterfly, which is set in the contemporary world, and deals with an American
sailor and his Japanese bride. The opera challenges the superficially exotic world of Japan that it
inhabits, and ends with a geisha girl committing suicide on stage. In Madama Butterfly, Puccini blends
the musical styles from Italy, Japan, and America to create an opera for all.
While opera was and has been rooted in its own nationality, composers started to include the ideas of
exoticism in their writing. At this time, Japan had closed themselves off from other lands for about
300 years. When they opened up, westerners were curious about the Japanese culture and vise versa.
Rudolf Dittrich was a teacher of western music at the Tokyo School of Music, Puccini quotes Dittrich
s music many times throughout Madama Butterfly in order to create a hybrid of Westernized Japanese
style . Puccini uses this hybrid style instead of authentic Japanese melodies in order to accentuate the
drama of Butterfly s

The Effects Conspiracy Theories Have On American Culture Conspiracy Theories are defined as a
belief that some covert but influential organization is responsible for a circumstance or event. An
uprising problem in American culture is the spread of the perpetuation of misinformation through
many online sources and social media platforms. A part of this issue is the publishing of fake news and
conspiracy theories, mainly by authors and editors who are seeking compensation for their

The author from The Atlantic discusses the effect that the publisher of these conspiracy theories has on
the American citizens. It is harmful as these theories have become normalized through politics, a great
portion of many lives and has led them to have their free mind almost being altered. The spread of
fake news is becoming a prevalent issue currently to owners of any media platform across the web as
stated through Gale Databases. As it has spread to websites and social media it has become hard to
distinguish the real from the fake if you are constantly being surrounded by the fake. The question of
why so many people believe in conspiracy theories can be embarked upon in many different aspects as
seen by Time. Through studies, we see that one s income, education, or political beliefs can alter their
mind. But also a mentality implemented through politics and the tension around that can be harming
people. In which every way it is absurd that people are still being fooled by this false information and
that it is allowed to still continue on. All three sources can come together to agree that the perpetuation
of misinformation is a very real, toxic product that is affecting the way in which our society views
events or stories. It can be taken on through politics and rumors present there, conspiracy

Summary OfThe Dying Negro By Aphra Behn s Oroonoko
Aphra Behn s Oroonoko and The Dying Negro by John Bicknell and Thomas Day are two texts that
have shaped the way British authors capture the slave narrative. Both texts were written by white,
British people. Both texts have the tendency to ignore the actual issue that is slavery. Oroonoko, or
The Royal Slave and The Dying Negro utilize the theme of the noble savage to present pro slavery and
oppressive ideas through an abolitionist text.
In The Emergence of Modern Racism: First Stage Cornel West writes:
The recovery of classical antiquity...produced what I shall call a normative gaze; namely, an ideal
from which to offer and compare observations. This idea was drawn primarily from classical aesthetic
values of beauty, proportion, and human form and classical cultural standards of moderation, self
control, and harmony (97).
Behn s Oroonooko cannot be classified as an anti slavery text because it stills depicts a form of
oppression. The narrator does have a negative view on slavery, but one of the only reasons it is
accepting of the narrator is because he fits into the European stand of beauty. Behn writes:
The most famous statuary could not form the figure of a man more admirably turned from head to
foot. His face was not that of brown, rusty black, which most of that nation are, but a perfect ebony or
polished jet.... His nose was rising and roman instead of African and flat. His mouth the finest shape

The Paradox of Rich-to-Poor Capital Flow Essay
According to the Solow Growth Model, all countries will eventually converge to their long run steady
state. If we consider the usual assumptions, of countries producing the same goods with the same
constant returns to scale production technology, using (homogenous) capital and labour as factors of
production, differences in income per capita income will reflect differences in per capita capital.
Therefore, essentially if capital is allowed to flow freely, new investments should occur only in the
poorer economy. However this is certainly not the case in reality. Most of the net capital flow in the
past four decades has been north to north (rich countries investing in other rich countries), rather than
north south (rich economies investing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eaton et al. s Pure Theory of Country Risk(1987)was published before Lucas published his paper
outlining the famous Lucas Paradox(1990), and in their analysis, they claim that the reason for the
lack of capital flows from north to south, or from rich to poor countries is the failure of the capital
market. Lucas, on the other hand stresses more on the view that the main explaination for the Lucas
Paradox is that capital, and most importantly human capital, is far less productive in poorer countries.
Lucas suggests adding human capital as an extra variable will remove the paradox, and essentially, in
order to improve capital flows from the rich to the poor, countries must concentrate on improving the
quality of their human capital in particular, and generally capital and labour productivity. The
alternative position, stresses that factors such as asymmetric information, unenforceable property
rights sovereign risk are the reason behind the paradox.
According to Lucas, capital imperfections do not explain the lack of flow from rich to poor countries
very well. An example he cites is that of world before 1945. Much of what is now the third world was
under colonial rule at the time, and therefore subject to European legal arrangements. Investors in
developed countries, such as the UK,

Pope Admiring Belinda in The Rape of the Lock Essay
Pope Admiring Belinda in The Rape of the Lock
The main character of Pope s The Rape of the Lock could be considered both hailed and damned by
the overseer, but the complexities and sometimes contradictions of Belinda spark a more unbiased
view.
The appearance of Belinda and the world in which she lives is described in a very fantastical and
beautiful way. Even small details such as the arrangement of Belinda s hair are due to wondrous
entities known as the Sylphs, whose sole task is to make sure she is looking her best. This
consideration of appearance in The Rape of the Lock is very important as the society that Belinda
lives within is very judgmental on the basis of appearance, especially for women. Her role

In many couplets he pairs something epic, which starts off the couplet, with a trivial anti climax. The
method of writing within
The Rape of the Lock is mock epic and serves the purpose of criticising the negative themes within
the poem by revealing them to the extreme.
Although Belinda is very superficial she does have an aura that makes her admirable, and Pope does
not look over this. She makes it known that she is quite pure and innocent and with this innocence it is
easier to overlook to the arguably negative traits that she holds. The social rules within her society
mean that she is condoned to act the way she does and through her innocence she does. She is
arguably innocent considering sex and her own sexuality even though she portrays as beautiful an
image as she can. Her physical gifts though could be argued, in her eyes, to be prettiness and nothing
to do with sexuality. Understanding the possibility of her being innocent, there are also undercurrents
that she is not so pure as she would have the other people within the poem believe. As an example,
after the lock is stolen she tells the Baron that he could have had a more private lock of hair of her
own free will. Although all that can be ordained is assumptions, through the language that Pope uses it
is pretty safe to assume that the innuendo in her speech is intentional.

Consequences Of Betrayal In The Adventures Of Ulysses
Daymieri Narvaez
HR: 306
Oct. 12, 2017
Betrayal
Betrayal is the action of deception against one s country, group, or a person. This action is noted both
in novels and in the real world. The novel The Adventures of Ulysses by Bernard Evslin describes a
scene in which two men betray Ulysses by opening a bag of winds. In the real world, a man named
Edward Snowden betrays his country by revealing classified information he was entrusted with. The
two situations of betrayal are justified and not justified throughout the texts they are mentioned in. In
the novel, The Adventures of Ulysses, Ulysses was guarding a bag of winds given to him by Aeolus.
He stood awake day and night, protecting the bag from the wandering minds of his crew, but when his
eyes gave out, two men took their chances and opened the bag. Though, the consequences that the
whole crew experienced cost them dearly, they had reasons for doing this. Predominantly, the two men
were tricked by the god of the sea, Poseidon, to open the bag. The god made sounds of clicking
trinkets and it lured the men to open the bag since they were profoundly greedy and have been battling
in a war for ten years. On page 36 of the novel, it states, Then Poseidon, swimming invisibly
alongside, clinked his golden armlets. The men heard the clinking and thought it came from the bag.
This demonstrates that the trickery of Poseidon encouraged the men to open the bag since they were
vulnerable the sound of trinkets. Additionally, Ulysses never told his crew what the bag contained and
why they shouldn t open it. If he did, the whole situation could have been avoided. All the same,
Ulysses was a trusted man and leader. The two men who betrayed him should have known better than
to doubt that their leader wouldn t have shared if it were real gold. Primarily, Ulysses had been the one
making the right decisions all the time and has gotten his crew out of trouble when needed. On page
36, in the text, it states, It is true, said the first, that he has always been generous. He shared the spoils
of Troy. This testifies that Ulysses had never kept anything to himself, he always shared his riches
with his crew. Thus, the two men should have thought a bit more before

The poem highlights the beauty and sensuality of nature. He uses the theme of nature to explore the
pleasure he feels whilst taking in the sights and smells of nature. Montague uses broad vowel sounds
to create assonance in the first stanza. This creates euphony and a sort of verbal music, possibly
representing the noise of the river and the theme of nature.
In The Locket, Montague expresses the theme of memory clearly and precisely, as it is written in
memory of his recently deceased, estranged mother. It documents Montagues resentment of his mother
s rejection of him and the pain he felt at having to grow up without her love: Sing a last song for the
lady who has gone fertile source of guilt and pain . The poet uses a rhyming couplet to begin the first
stanza. This gives the stanza a song like style that is in juxtaposition with the sardonic, tongue in
cheek tone. When he grew older he sought her out again and tried desperately to win her over but as
she grows fond of him, she tells him not to come again. In the final stanza, there is a twist as, after her
death, Montague discovers that she wore a locket containing a baby picture of him, beneath her
clothes at all times. Although this does confuse him i.e. mysterious blessing , it does provide him with
some closure as he realises she was guilty about her inability to love him. Similarly, The Cage
expresses the memory of

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)
In late 2001, an amateur astronomer happened upon an uncharacteristically bright object in the
Monocerotis constellation (Figure 1). Over the next several months the object went through periods of
intense brightness the likes of which had rarely been seen before. My research this summer was to use
a computer simulation to better understand what may have caused this strange event known as V838
Mon. In order to understand what may have caused the bright outbursts, it is necessary to try and
make a model of the event that caused them. To make this model, we implement a Smoothed Particle

Also, an ever present goal is to make the simulation more physically accurate to achieve the best
results possible without spending too much computation time. The beginning of my research was
spent adjusting the conditions to try to fit an outcome that we wanted. The outcomes included how
many times the two stars would collide, the times between when the stars collided, and the peak in the
brightness of the system. The latter half of my research project was spent primarily trying to improve
different aspects of the simulation code. Primarily how transparent the gases should be at different
distances to the center of the collision. The transparencies can change how bright the star is measured
to be as well as the temperature of the star, two very important sets of data for modelling. It depends
on the types of gases and molecules present in the system and the temperature and radiation near those

Lord Durham Vs Lord Elgin
Gia Barela
Lord Durham Vs. Lord Elgin Lord Durham and Lord Elgin played a major role in setting the
foundation of Canada as we know today. However, Lord Durham was the mastermind behind the idea
of establishing a more responsible government to benefit the future of all Canadians. Durham was
appointed governor general by the British government to search for answers on why the rebellion had
occurred and the solutions. He observed that the issue of the rebellion was not between the people, but
the system of government. With that being said, the system of government was flawed in a sense that
majority of the French population, especially in Lower Canada, were not getting the proper
representation they rightfully deserve. Therefore

Analysis Of We Real Cool
We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although
the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks
centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in
which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African American men felt misunderstood
and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere
description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further
analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this
poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd
mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in
no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes
dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual s way of thinking. When an
individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they
know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in We Real Cool.
In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects The Pool Players. Seven at
the Golden Shovel (line 1 2), they are the we in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the
speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned.
The speakers tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with
uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter
that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker s nonchalant
attitude and their disdain for the establishment.
The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line We real cool. We Left school. (line3 4) The
speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The
danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for
a place where they can belong, which

The Dark Side Of Zombies
Darkness devoured everything in sight. A sea of lifeless moans crashed into the walls that kept me
prisoner. I could feel the hot breath of those creatures seeping through the walls. Paranoia invaded my
brain like the disease that infested those monsters. They were constantly trying to get in. They knew I
was here, I was a meal trapped in a cage and every intake of breath was a ring of the dinner bell.
Suddenly the snaps of rotting wood punched my ear drum. The snarling monsters came tumbling
through the gaps, their twisting bodies shuffling towards me. As their outstretched limbs searched for
my flesh I was ripped away by the ring of a phone. The television had sucked me in once again.
Casting me in the middle of the fictitious apocalypse. The concept of zombies has always been a
welcomed thought to me but why? Why am I and other humans fascinated with the thought of this life
threatening concept? These creatures are known by many names. The undead, zombies, even the
popular tv show The Walking Dead refers to them as walkers. Within history we find that the term
zombie comes from Haitian folklore where corpse reanimation was achieved mostly through magic. In
recent times radiation, mental disease, scientific accidents, etc. attribute to this reanimation.
HISTORY
The idea of zombies can be traced all the way back to 8th century. Voodoo priests used black magic to
possess their victims or so they say. They actually applied a deadly poison from a porcupine fish

A Brief Note On Maple Syrup
One thing Canada is known for is their maple syrup. Canada s maple syrup has always been a part of
the culture. From being taught how to harvest sap from the immense amount of maple trees, boil it and
turn it into one of Canada s main foods, Canadian maple syrup has always been in demand. To
produce one gallon of maple syrup, on average, 40 gallons of sap is needed. In 2007, 6.7 million
pounds of maple syrup were exported to the United States alone, so a lot of resources, in this case,
trees, are needed.[Pure Canada Maple] Maple syrup can be used for many things, although it is often
paired with pancakes, waffles, or French toast, it is also used to top oatmeal or porridge. Other uses of
maple syrup are ingredients in baking and as a flavouring agent. Canada produces 71 percent of the
world pure maple syrup, this percentage however continues to increase. Out of that percentage, 91
percent is produced in the province of Quebec. Although Quebec produces most of Canada s maple
syrup, Ontario, New Brunswick, P.E.I and Nova Scotia produce maple syrup as well.[ibid] With more
than 8600 maple syrup businesses in Canada, the infamous Canadian maple syrup is exported to
around 50 countries.[ibid] From when the Algonquians found syrup and used simple tools to extract
sap from maple trees, until now, the process has not changed much. An important note is that not
many regions have the natural resources of maple trees, to be able to produce the product themselves.
Canada, however,

Common Types Of Blood Borne Pathogens
There are so many ways to be infected by disease or a virus. It s very dangerous to be affected by a
virus because it can mean death to a human being if not treated right away. One of the deadliest types
of viruses are Blood borne pathogens. Blood borne pathogens are normally transmitted to a human by
a bodily fluid from a contaminated person. They can enter your body through open cuts, mucus
membranes, skin abrasions or even sharing needles. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis
B and Hepatitis C are the most common types of blood borne pathogens. These 3 types are very
deadly to humans. These pathogens have been affecting humans for a very long time. The first known
case for HIV was in 1959, at the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Later on in the year 1981 was the
first reported case of HIV in the United States of America. Hepatitis B was officially recognized in the
year 1967. People with Hepatitis B can develop Liver cancer. Historians believe that the first cases of
Hepatitis C, was around the 8th century A.D. Cases were also reported during the civil war and
referred to as Campaign Jaundice. Even in World War 2 soldiers were hospitalized for Hepatitis C.
Some of these blood borne pathogens were discovered very recently. During the times they were
discovered they destroyed many lives. All three of these viruses have their own risk factors. HIV can
be spread through unprotected sex, if someone else has a sexually transmitted infection (they can act

Mahatma Gandhi Philosophy
During the period of British colonies in India, Mahatma Gandhi (1869 1948) led his community to
protest against its harsh policies. Gandhi played an important role as a political figure and primarily as
a social reformer in political movements. The Father of the Nation established and employed his
philosophy including satyagraha, swaraj, and ashima in Indian nonviolent civil disobedience. In this
period, Gandhi s decision to be celibate and to adopt Bramacharya was consistent with his political
philosophy.
While Gandhi was well known as a political leader, he was primarily a social reformer. Through
power of a political figure, he could reform Indian society. First reason, his philosophy originated
from his childhood. It matured gradually until he took political activities at his middle age. In his
childhood, She impressed him most with her spirit of self sacrifice. As a devout Hindu in pursuit of
self purification ... He makes clear that the decisive influence on his life came from his mother (5). At
the age of thirteen, he realized that the wife is ...as free as the husband to choose her own path ... For a
male living at this time in any society, this was an uncommon insight, yet consistent with Gandhi s
later commitment as a political activist to the emancipation of women (6). At age of eighteen, he learnt
to be tolerant of other religions. The syncretic spirit of Hinduism helped him to define religion...in its
broadest sense, meaning thereby self realization or knowledge

Description Of The Poem Sunflowers
Sunflowers
Doreen put down the watering can and wrinkled her nose. What a putrid smell, is that a blocked drain
or something? I haven t noticed any funny smells coming from the house lately, have you?
Margaret shook her head, I remember it smelt a bit off out here the other day, but I thought maybe it
was the drain, I did have a look but everything seemed fine. It could be sewage I suppose. She went
back into the chicken shed to feed the hens again, even they looked morose, seemingly aware the June
was no longer around.
I don t know how she managed all of this by herself, said Doreen, as she watered the last of the
sunflowers. It s a full time job in itself. Seriously, this smell is making me wretch, come over here and
see for yourself. I ve never smelt anything like it before.
Margaret walked over to the end of the garden.
Yes, I see what you mean now, it s definitely coming from those sunflowers, they smell as though they
ve gone bad. I didn t think they went off in that way though.
They just look so listless.
I wonder if the soil has gone bad, said Doreen, they look diseased, they ll contaminate the soil and
everything around them will die if we don t take them up now. Do you think we should do that?
Margaret shrugged, they do seem to be attracting an awful lot of flies.
It s unsightly, said Doreen, I m sure June would have done the same.
Oh, god, yes. She wouldn t have wanted anybody to see them in this state, you know how much of a
garden snob

Rape, Violence, And Feminist Networks
There has been a lot of discussion of rape within sociologists, criminologists, and feminist networks.
In my own words, rape is someone engaging with someone else sexually without their consent. Rape
is not strictly vaginal penetration, nor an exclusive heterosexual only act. If two people are in a
relationship or married, there is still no justification to the perpetrator for their act. In the 21st century,
although rape crimes have dropped 24.1% from 2001 to 2010, but not all rapes are reported (Eitzen,
Zinn, Smith, 2010). Curtis (1997) reported that 42% of rape victims do not tell anyone of their
assaults. There may be a number of reasons why victims don t speak out. Victims of rape typically fear
their own safety and lives if they speak out on it. Men who are victims typically don t report rapes
because it s considered demasculizing to their gender. Rape victims are traumatized for life, they live
with the burden, as their perpetrators walk away free (Curtis, 1997). NPR s Rachel Martin interviewed
author, Jon Krakauer, and they discussed Krakauer s new book on the issue of acquaintance rape.
Curtis (1997) defines acquaintance rape in the situation that the victim knows their assaulter. With the
main subject being acquaintance rape, Krakauer s book focuses on this college town, Missoula, in
Montana. Krakauer tells Martin that 230 rapes have occurred in Missoula, without prosecution (NPR,
2015). From there, Krakauer talks about one of those cases.

The difference between slaves and servants is that slaves were owed for life or until their master decided to let them leave or they died. Indentured servants were granted freedom, safe passage to the country and land ownership after working the length of their contract, as previously agreed upon. One of the main reasons slaves and indentured servants were so vital to the British colonies is that they were cheap and effective labor. They were able to work in the fields planting, fertilizing, watering and picking the crop when it was ready to be harvested for consumption or profit. The Americans thought less of them; that they weren t even human but personal property to do with as they pleased. These views all came in to account due to their skin color being darker. The American s thought they were evil since they were so dark complected. That they were stupid and couldn t make their own way in the world. • 12. Madama Butterfly Analysis Italian opera of the 19th century was deeply rooted in national life. Italy was unified under Victor Emmanuel II in 1859 61, and verismo was the popular form of composing operas at this time. Verismo, or realism, is a phase of naturalism in literature and music characterized by projection on stage of fierce passions, violence, and death. Operas of the verismo style paint a picture of everyday people that were mainly from the middle class, doing extraordinary things. An example of this is Puccini s Madama Butterfly, which is set in the contemporary world, and deals with an American sailor and his Japanese bride. The opera challenges the superficially exotic world of Japan that it inhabits, and ends with a geisha girl committing suicide on stage. In Madama Butterfly, Puccini blends the musical styles from Italy, Japan, and America to create an opera for all. While opera was and has been rooted in its own nationality, composers started to include the ideas of exoticism in their writing. At this time, Japan had closed themselves off from other lands for about 300 years. When they opened up, westerners were curious about the Japanese culture and vise versa. Rudolf Dittrich was a teacher of western music at the Tokyo School of Music, Puccini quotes Dittrich s music many times throughout Madama Butterfly in order to create a hybrid of Westernized Japanese style . Puccini uses this hybrid style instead of authentic Japanese melodies in order to accentuate the drama of Butterfly s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary OfThe Dying Negro By Aphra Behn s Oroonoko Aphra Behn s Oroonoko and The Dying Negro by John Bicknell and Thomas Day are two texts that have shaped the way British authors capture the slave narrative. Both texts were written by white, British people. Both texts have the tendency to ignore the actual issue that is slavery. Oroonoko, or The Royal Slave and The Dying Negro utilize the theme of the noble savage to present pro slavery and oppressive ideas through an abolitionist text. In The Emergence of Modern Racism: First Stage Cornel West writes: The recovery of classical antiquity...produced what I shall call a normative gaze; namely, an ideal from which to offer and compare observations. This idea was drawn primarily from classical aesthetic values of beauty, proportion, and human form and classical cultural standards of moderation, self control, and harmony (97). Behn s Oroonooko cannot be classified as an anti slavery text because it stills depicts a form of oppression. The narrator does have a negative view on slavery, but one of the only reasons it is accepting of the narrator is because he fits into the European stand of beauty. Behn writes: The most famous statuary could not form the figure of a man more admirably turned from head to foot. His face was not that of brown, rusty black, which most of that nation are, but a perfect ebony or polished jet.... His nose was rising and roman instead of African and flat. If we consider the usual assumptions, of countries producing the same goods with the same constant returns to scale production technology, using (homogenous) capital and labour as factors of production, differences in income per capita income will reflect differences in per capita capital. Therefore, essentially if capital is allowed to flow freely, new investments should occur only in the poorer economy. However this is certainly not the case in reality. Most of the net capital flow in the past four decades has been north to north (rich countries investing in other rich countries), rather than north south (rich economies investing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eaton et al. s Pure Theory of Country Risk(1987)was published before Lucas published his paper outlining the famous Lucas Paradox(1990), and in their analysis, they claim that the reason for the lack of capital flows from north to south, or from rich to poor countries is the failure of the capital market. Lucas, on the other hand stresses more on the view that the main explaination for the Lucas Paradox is that capital, and most importantly human capital, is far less productive in poorer countries. Lucas suggests adding human capital as an extra variable will remove the paradox, and essentially, in order to improve capital flows from the rich to the poor, countries must concentrate on improving the quality of their human capital in particular, and generally capital and labour productivity. The alternative position, stresses that factors such as asymmetric information, unenforceable property rights sovereign risk are the reason behind the paradox. According to Lucas, capital imperfections do not explain the lack of flow from rich to poor countries very well. An example he cites is that of world before 1945. The appearance of Belinda and the world in which she lives is described in a very fantastical and beautiful way. Even small details such as the arrangement of Belinda s hair are due to wondrous entities known as the Sylphs, whose sole task is to make sure she is looking her best. The method of writing within The Rape of the Lock is mock epic and serves the purpose of criticising the negative themes within the poem by revealing them to the extreme. Although Belinda is very superficial she does have an aura that makes her admirable, and Pope does not look over this. She makes it known that she is quite pure and innocent and with this innocence it is easier to overlook to the arguably negative traits that she holds. The social rules within her society mean that she is condoned to act the way she does and through her innocence she does. She is arguably innocent considering sex and her own sexuality even though she portrays as beautiful an image as she can. Her physical gifts though could be argued, in her eyes, to be prettiness and nothing to do with sexuality. Understanding the possibility of her being innocent, there are also undercurrents that she is not so pure as she would have the other people within the poem believe. As an example, after the lock is stolen she tells the Baron that he could have had a more private lock of hair of her own free will. • 19. Consequences Of Betrayal In The Adventures Of Ulysses Daymieri Narvaez HR: 306 Oct. 12, 2017 Betrayal Betrayal is the action of deception against one s country, group, or a person. This action is noted both in novels and in the real world. The novel The Adventures of Ulysses by Bernard Evslin describes a scene in which two men betray Ulysses by opening a bag of winds. In the real world, a man named Edward Snowden betrays his country by revealing classified information he was entrusted with. The two situations of betrayal are justified and not justified throughout the texts they are mentioned in. In the novel, The Adventures of Ulysses, Ulysses was guarding a bag of winds given to him by Aeolus. He stood awake day and night, protecting the bag from the wandering minds of his crew, but when his eyes gave out, two men took their chances and opened the bag. Though, the consequences that the whole crew experienced cost them dearly, they had reasons for doing this. Predominantly, the two men were tricked by the god of the sea, Poseidon, to open the bag. The god made sounds of clicking trinkets and it lured the men to open the bag since they were profoundly greedy and have been battling in a war for ten years. On page 36 of the novel, it states, Then Poseidon, swimming invisibly alongside, clinked his golden armlets. The men heard the clinking and thought it came from the bag. This demonstrates that the trickery of Poseidon encouraged the men to open the bag since they were vulnerable the sound of trinkets. Additionally, Ulysses never told his crew what the bag contained and why they shouldn t open it. If he did, the whole situation could have been avoided. All the same, Ulysses was a trusted man and leader. The two men who betrayed him should have known better than to doubt that their leader wouldn t have shared if it were real gold. Primarily, Ulysses had been the one making the right decisions all the time and has gotten his crew out of trouble when needed. On page 36, in the text, it states, It is true, said the first, that he has always been generous. He shared the spoils of Troy. This testifies that Ulysses had never kept anything to himself, he always shared his riches with his crew. Thus, the two men should have thought a bit more before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He uses the theme of nature to explore the pleasure he feels whilst taking in the sights and smells of nature. Montague uses broad vowel sounds to create assonance in the first stanza. This creates euphony and a sort of verbal music, possibly representing the noise of the river and the theme of nature. In The Locket, Montague expresses the theme of memory clearly and precisely, as it is written in memory of his recently deceased, estranged mother. It documents Montagues resentment of his mother s rejection of him and the pain he felt at having to grow up without her love: Sing a last song for the lady who has gone fertile source of guilt and pain . The poet uses a rhyming couplet to begin the first stanza. This gives the stanza a song like style that is in juxtaposition with the sardonic, tongue in cheek tone. When he grew older he sought her out again and tried desperately to win her over but as she grows fond of him, she tells him not to come again. In the final stanza, there is a twist as, after her death, Montague discovers that she wore a locket containing a baby picture of him, beneath her clothes at all times. Although this does confuse him i.e. mysterious blessing , it does provide him with some closure as he realises she was guilty about her inability to love him. • 25. Analysis Of We Real Cool We Real Cool, by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual s way of thinking. When an individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in We Real Cool. In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel (line 1 2), they are the we in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned. The speakers tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker s nonchalant attitude and their disdain for the establishment. The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line We real cool. We Left school. (line3 4) The speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for a place where they can belong, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The snarling monsters came tumbling through the gaps, their twisting bodies shuffling towards me. As their outstretched limbs searched for my flesh I was ripped away by the ring of a phone. The television had sucked me in once again. Casting me in the middle of the fictitious apocalypse. The concept of zombies has always been a welcomed thought to me but why? Why am I and other humans fascinated with the thought of this life threatening concept? These creatures are known by many names. The undead, zombies, even the popular tv show The Walking Dead refers to them as walkers. Within history we find that the term zombie comes from Haitian folklore where corpse reanimation was achieved mostly through magic. In recent times radiation, mental disease, scientific accidents, etc. attribute to this reanimation. HISTORY The idea of zombies can be traced all the way back to 8th century. Voodoo priests used black magic to possess their victims or so they say. They actually applied a deadly poison from a porcupine fish known as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. A Brief Note On Maple Syrup One thing Canada is known for is their maple syrup. Canada s maple syrup has always been a part of the culture. From being taught how to harvest sap from the immense amount of maple trees, boil it and turn it into one of Canada s main foods, Canadian maple syrup has always been in demand. To produce one gallon of maple syrup, on average, 40 gallons of sap is needed. In 2007, 6.7 million pounds of maple syrup were exported to the United States alone, so a lot of resources, in this case, trees, are needed.[Pure Canada Maple] Maple syrup can be used for many things, although it is often paired with pancakes, waffles, or French toast, it is also used to top oatmeal or porridge. Other uses of maple syrup are ingredients in baking and as a flavouring agent. Canada produces 71 percent of the world pure maple syrup, this percentage however continues to increase. Out of that percentage, 91 percent is produced in the province of Quebec. Although Quebec produces most of Canada s maple syrup, Ontario, New Brunswick, P.E.I and Nova Scotia produce maple syrup as well.[ibid] With more than 8600 maple syrup businesses in Canada, the infamous Canadian maple syrup is exported to around 50 countries.[ibid] From when the Algonquians found syrup and used simple tools to extract sap from maple trees, until now, the process has not changed much. An important note is that not many regions have the natural resources of maple trees, to be able to produce the product themselves. Canada, however, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Common Types Of Blood Borne Pathogens There are so many ways to be infected by disease or a virus. It s very dangerous to be affected by a virus because it can mean death to a human being if not treated right away. One of the deadliest types of viruses are Blood borne pathogens. Blood borne pathogens are normally transmitted to a human by a bodily fluid from a contaminated person. They can enter your body through open cuts, mucus membranes, skin abrasions or even sharing needles. • 30. Mahatma Gandhi Philosophy During the period of British colonies in India, Mahatma Gandhi (1869 1948) led his community to protest against its harsh policies. Gandhi played an important role as a political figure and primarily as a social reformer in political movements. The Father of the Nation established and employed his philosophy including satyagraha, swaraj, and ashima in Indian nonviolent civil disobedience. In this period, Gandhi s decision to be celibate and to adopt Bramacharya was consistent with his political philosophy. While Gandhi was well known as a political leader, he was primarily a social reformer. Through power of a political figure, he could reform Indian society. First reason, his philosophy originated from his childhood. It matured gradually until he took political activities at his middle age. • 31. Description Of The Poem Sunflowers Sunflowers Doreen put down the watering can and wrinkled her nose. What a putrid smell, is that a blocked drain or something? I haven t noticed any funny smells coming from the house lately, have you? Margaret shook her head, I remember it smelt a bit off out here the other day, but I thought maybe it was the drain, I did have a look but everything seemed fine. It could be sewage I suppose. She went back into the chicken shed to feed the hens again, even they looked morose, seemingly aware the June was no longer around. I don t know how she managed all of this by herself, said Doreen, as she watered the last of the sunflowers. It s a full time job in itself. Seriously, this smell is making me wretch, come over here and see for yourself. I ve never smelt anything like it before. Margaret walked over to the end of the garden. Yes, I see what you mean now, it s definitely coming from those sunflowers, they smell as though they ve gone bad. I didn t think they went off in that way though. They just look so listless. I wonder if the soil has gone bad, said Doreen, they look diseased, they ll contaminate the soil and everything around them will die if we don t take them up now. Do you think we should do that? Margaret shrugged, they do seem to be attracting an awful lot of flies. It s unsightly, said Doreen, I m sure June would have done the same. Oh, god, yes. She wouldn t have wanted anybody to see them in this state, you know how much of a garden snob ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Rape, Violence, And Feminist Networks There has been a lot of discussion of rape within sociologists, criminologists, and feminist networks. In my own words, rape is someone engaging with someone else sexually without their consent. Rape is not strictly vaginal penetration, nor an exclusive heterosexual only act. If two people are in a relationship or married, there is still no justification to the perpetrator for their act. In the 21st century, although rape crimes have dropped 24.1% from 2001 to 2010, but not all rapes are reported (Eitzen, Zinn, Smith, 2010). Curtis (1997) reported that 42% of rape victims do not tell anyone of their assaults. There may be a number of reasons why victims don t speak out. Victims of rape typically fear their own safety and lives if they speak out on it. Men who are victims typically don t report rapes because it s considered demasculizing to their gender. Rape victims are traumatized for life, they live with the burden, as their perpetrators walk away free (Curtis, 1997). NPR s Rachel Martin interviewed author, Jon Krakauer, and they discussed Krakauer s new book on the issue of acquaintance rape. Curtis (1997) defines acquaintance rape in the situation that the victim knows their assaulter. With the main subject being acquaintance rape, Krakauer s book focuses on this college town, Missoula, in Montana. Krakauer tells Martin that 230 rapes have occurred in Missoula, without prosecution (NPR, 2015). From there, Krakauer talks about one of those cases. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
