Plants reproduce sexually through a life cycle of alternating generations. In vascular plants like ferns, the sporophyte generation is dominant and produces spores through meiosis. These spores grow into smaller gametophytes that produce gametes. Fertilization of an egg cell by a sperm cell forms a diploid zygote, beginning the cycle again. Seeds develop from fertilized ovules inside fruits and are dispersed by animals, wind, or water. Germination begins when seeds absorb water and sprout. Vegetative propagation allows new plants to form from plant parts like stems, tubers, or leaves.
