Students hoping to work in an agency leave university with a new found ability. The world is theirs to conquer, but often they are missing one core skill, one they may not even know they lack. The ability to work as part of a large digital team.
Up-Grade was conceived to help students see behind the curtain of agency life and learn how they can fit in.

The Complexity Curve: How to Design for Simplicity (SXSW, March 2012)Dave Hogue
Interfaces and devices are providing more and more power and functionality to people, and in many cases this additional power is accompanied by increasing complexity. Although people have more experience and are more sophisticated, it still takes time to learn new interfaces, information, and interactions. Although we are able to learn and use these often difficult interfaces, we increasingly seek and appreciate simplicity.
The Complexity Curve describes how a project moves from boundless opportunity and wonderful ideas to requirements checklists and constraints then finally (but only rarely) to simplicity and elegance. Where many projects call themselves complete when the necessary features have been included, few push forward and strive to deliver the pleasing and delightful experiences that arise from simplicity, focus, and purpose.
David M. Hogue, Ph.D. - VP of Experience Design, applied psychologist, and adjunct faculty member at San Francisco State University - introduces the Complexity Curve, discuss why our innovative ideas seem to fade over the course of a project, explain why "feature complete" is not the same as "optimal experience", and offer some methods for driving projects toward simplicity and elegance.

The quote, although recently challenged for its authenticity, is an accurate reflection of the factors that drive product adoption. What is recognizable speech if not product readiness, telephone devices in every city, a means of distribution and the question of why anyone would use it - that of shifting consumer habits? Fast forward 130 years and the questions are the same about video communications. Video communications are nothing new. The goal of making it easier to see the person you’re talking to is a consistent theme in telephony. And yet by far the fastest growing communication method in the last 50 years has been short, asynchronous text messaging, with WhatsApp alone generating 18.3 trillion messages annually and an aggregated SMS volume at 8.16 trillion. So why is video communication not mainstream yet and what can we do to accelerate its adoption?

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

It can be a bit daunting,
like that. Fact is, its only when a team works together that great things happen.
5. The big idea
There are many career choices for students, for those that want to work in an agency
it’s incredibly important that they understand how the skills they learn at university fit
into a team.
We wanted to give that opportunity. Not a placement, not a competition, actual
experience of every function in an agency. What everyone does and how we do it.
6. What we did next
We approached Napier University and
said we wanted to change the way we
as an agency thought about student

Based on these six steps

experience. During the last six weeks I’ve
gained a real feel for the practical side of

could possibly have imagined. I’ve also
been very lucky, as the experience has
opened doors for me within the industry,
and has subsequently landed me my first
full-time creative role with Tesco Bank.”

32. WE RAN AN ANONYMOUS QUESTIONNAIRE
AFTER UPGRADE ENDED
33. What was your view of working in agencies
before Up-Grade and has it changed at all?
“
Slightly intimidating. My view has definitely changed.
I didn't really know much, but I loved the community about the
agency and everyone seemed to be happy to help, which is
great! I now know I want to work in a team like this.
I hadn't realised how tasks are split in an agency, it was also very
interesting to see the general workflow in an agency and
work with a budget which doesn't apply to university projects
I didnt know what to expect in how an agency works.
It has changed hugely in term of budgeting and planning
and particularly the creative side of it too
34. How would you explain Up-Grade
to another student?
“
A really valuable experience worth taking part in.
A great insight into the profession.
Up-grade, everything you need to know about
the real world industry.
Best way i can describe up-grade to another student, is that
up-grade is the chance to gain a lot of agency experience in
a small amount of time, and a great opportunity.
35. THE STUDENTS HAVE ALSO USED THE EXPERIENCE
TO GIVE THEM AN EDGE IN FINDING WORK.
39. • Staff motivation and pride
within the agency
• High quality recruitment
method
• Be the agency that students
want to work at
• Give something back to the
industry
• Retain talent in the local
area
