Animal Farm Figurative Language
How does George Orwell use characterisation to explore ideas in his Novella Animal Farm? George
Orwell s, Animal Farm conveys the concepts like loyalty can be rewarded, all power corrupts and fear
is more influential than love. These key features clearly express that power can devise influential
actions, which has been mentioned many times throughout the novel. The techniques like
personification, irony, foreshadowing, conflict, figurative language, point of view, symbolism and
imagery are used to display the manipulation, which support in an expressive tone. Orwell also
displays that loyalty is not always rewarded through Boxer the horse. Boxer demonstrates that he is a

This is conveyed through Boxer when he is creating the windmill and is seen to be very tired but

it must be right. After that, he had this slogan set in his mind, Napoleon is always right he basically
said to himself that I will work harder , which made him attain the courage throughout. When the
windmill was devastated by Mr Fredrick, he refused to take even a day off work, even if he was in
pain and kept himself going on the base of his slogans. Napoleon literary didn t give attention to
Boxer during his retirement period, even when he fainted during the making of the windmill.

The Marshmallow Effect
Marshmallow Effect Scientists often attribute adaptive and goal directed human behavior to an
intellectual control system that organizes, monitors, and alters the settings of lower level perceptive
processes. This allows people to suppress or replace impulsive, habitual, or inappropriate actions. The
Marshmallow Effect is an experiment conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the 1970 s to
study self control in children (Walter, 2013). This experiment is a simple but effective when it comes
to the modern study of the human ability to delay gratification. The studies are about achievement
situations and what influences a child to reach his or her choice. The ability to delay gratification has
commonly been seen in large part as an issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Theory Of Moral Sentiments And The Wealth Of Nations
How Adam smith can change your life, at the beginning the author gives you a history of Adam smith
and all that he has done. From his books: The theory of moral sentiments and the wealth of nations.
How can someone from two hundred and fifty years ago, a Scottish moral philosopher can still be
relevant currently in 2016. Why is because of the questions that he asked in his two books above some
of which have been through different editions like The Theory of Moral Sentiments. The author of this
book Russ Roberts had not even read the book the Theory of Moral Sentiments until his friend Dan
Klein at George Mason University suggested him to interview him about it on one of his weekly
podcast, EconTalk (Roberts, p.2 3).
The first chapter the author is preparing you for what to expect and what Adam smith is like with his
sense of writing. I did not what to expect when I started reading this but, Roberts giving you a brief
insight into Smith s life and more importantly his death. No journal or diary survived Smith s death
which surprised me for what type of impact he had back in the 1700s until now (Roberts, p.7). The
author lets you know what is upcoming in the next few chapters and is not giving you too much
information too soon. Even though, Adam Smith is the father of economics this book is not exactly
about that. These concepts in this book to apply to anyone of any major, any demographic, any race,

Costs Of Globalization And Localization
Globalization and localization are two conflicting trends in international politics today. Globalization
is the spread of peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies from one area of the
world to another. (Rosenau 15) Localization is the narrowing of horizons and the confinement of
peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies to a particular geographic area.
(Rosenau 16) Globalization and localization affect the world s countries in three main areas, politics,
economics, and culture. Both globalization and localization have many benefits, as well as many
costs.
Globalization is a predominant force in the world today. The development of the Internet and other far

Participation in global organizations also undermines political autonomy of countries.
At the same time that globalization of the world is increasing, there are also strong localization
sentiments. Many things can be gained by the emphasis of local distinctiveness in politics, culture, and
economy. Politically, localization gives governmental autonomy to nations. Countries can spend all
their time and effort on programs and policies that emphasize their priorities. Economically, the
activities of producers and consumers are constricted to the country, which provides support for
domestic businesses and full consumption of the goods they produce. Culturally, localization gives
nations a rich sense of heritage and strengthens traditional customs and ideas. (Rosenau 17)
Localization serves to strengthen individual countries.
While there are benefits to localization, there are also costs. Localization decreases international trade
and investment which decreases the amount and variety of goods and services available to people.
Localization also prevents new customs and ideas from entering a country that could enrich their
culture. Without participation in international political organizations, a country is without allies and
support in times of military or economic crisis.
Globalization and localization can best be understood by examining current events. One of the most
prevalent examples of globalization today is evident in the first

A Brief Note On The And The Legacy Of The Crusades
SOLDIERS OF THE CROSS: THE LEGACY OF THE CRUSADES

October 6, 2014
On a late November day, in the year 1095, the leader of the Holy Roman Catholic Church delivered a
sermon that would forever change the face of Europe. Pope Urban II roused those in attendance at the
Council of Clermont to take up arms and fight for a noble and just cause. I, or rather the Lord, beseech
you as Christ s heralds to publish this everywhere and to pers¬e all people of whatever rank, foot
soldiers and knights, poor and rich, to carry aid promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile
race from the lands of our friends. I say this to those who are present, it is meant also for those who
are absent. Moreover, Christ commands it . When Pope Urban had said these ... things in his urbane
discourse, he so influenced to one purpose the desires of all who were present, that they cried out It is
the will of God! It is the will of God! . When the venerable Roman pontiff heard that, [he] said: Most
beloved brethren, today is manifest in you what the Lord says in the Gospel, Where two or three are
gathered together in my name there am I in the midst of them. Unless the Lord God had been present
in your spirits, all of you would not have uttered the same cry. For, although the cry issued from
numerous mouths, yet the origin of the cry was one. Therefore I say to you that God, who implanted

Stargirl, A Microcosm of Societal Conformity Essay
Imagine a thirteen year old middle school girl, wearing Guess boots and an Abercrombie hood in order
to fit in. Visualize a thirty five year old man listening to the top forty radio stations and watching
American Idol, so he can have something to add to the discussion with his co workers over coffee
break. The various types of behaviours stated before are pertained to as conformity. Conformity refers
to the process by which an individual s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours are influenced by other
individuals. Except, how do these necessities manipulate a being? Social psychologists have
conducted an assortment of experiments and concluded that, through a range of forms of social
influence, groups can alter their members personality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When this romance initially commences, Leo notices people treating him differently as if he is an
alien. This is because Stargirl is an extraordinarily typical girl who doesn t track the culture of the
school. She plays an ukulele, keeps a pet rat in her tote bag, treats everyone with kindness and
serenades them in the lunchroom on their birthdays. As a result Leo requests Stargirl to transform her
identity so she can fit into the school, and people won t look down upon them. He wants her to
conform into the society. She adjusts her name into Susan an ordinary high school girl. The reader
discovers in this progression that she is discontented pretending to be what she isn t. Ultimately, she is
happiest when she is factual to herself. As she articulates Every once in a while someone comes along

who I am rather than assimilating I rather enjoy myself as who I really am. (Spinelli, Stargirl 177).
This advocates that perhaps one can take a message from her and be a little truer to one self. Rather
than following what others say and having no genuine identity, it is vital to build up an own identity a
way one can be referred to as.

The Politics behind Dante’s Inferno
The Divine Comedy is much more than an epic poem depicting a man s interpretation of Heaven,
Hell, and Purgatory. Written by Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, the Divine Comedy frequently alludes to
the political turmoil that was prevalent throughout 14th century Italy, specifically, the city of Florence.
During this period of Italian history, there was a lack of a stable government and a power struggle
between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor. This paper will analyze the political aspects within
the Divine Comedy and its connection to religion, focusing specifically on the Inferno. During Dante s
lifetime, two factions were in constant conflict amongst each other over control of his home of
Florence; the Guelphs, supporters of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The wrathful are destined to fight with each other in the Styx, a muddy river found in this circle, while
the sullen are left buried under the muddy water overlooking the fighting. The remaining four circles

Dante must pass through the walls of the city, Dis. The sixth circle of hell are where the souls of the
heretics are found, and burning in their open graves is the way they suffer for the rest of eternity. The
seventh circle of hell is where the souls of the violent reside. This circle of hell is separated into three
different sections, representing the 3 different types of violence separated by rings; 1) violence against
neighbors, 2) violence against oneself, and 3) violence against God. The outer ring, those who commit
violence against their neighbors, are punished by being submerged into the Phlegethon, a river of
boiling blood. Anyone who tries to leave have arrows shot at them by Centaurs. Those in the middle
rings who committed violence against themselves, or suicide, are punished by being turned into trees
and bushes, in which harpies feed upon them. The trees can only talk when they have their branches
ripped off. The middle ring also houses profligates, or those who destroyed their lives by recklessly
spending money. Their punishment is to eternally run away from dogs who try to maul

Dark Side Leadership And How They Can Get Into Power
Dark side leadership creates problems for organisations and the individual, the most common form of
this being derailment. Smart (1999) estimated that the cost of a failed executive to be $2.7 million.
This essay is going to focus on what dark side leadership is and how they can get into power when the
consequences can be so great. The drawbacks of such research will be discussed and alternative
explanations explored. Before concluding that an inclusive approach must be adopted.
The majority of research into how destructive leaders can get into power has focussed on the
individual themselves. Kenny and Zaccaro (1983) investigated leader emergence and found that 48
82% of the variance in leadership emergence was due to personality. The area of dark side leadership
lacks coherence around definitions and causations (Slattery, 2009). The majority of this essay will
focus on personality explaining dark side leadership emergence. Firstly, it is important to look at
leadership emergence with regards to dark side traits as proposed by Hogan and Hogan (1997). Dark
side traits are defined as traits that are undesirable, that are present in excess and not traits in which
they are lacking (Hogan Hogan, 2001). They identified 11 subclinical traits that can be present in dark
side leaders, e.g. narcissism, by using the Hogan Development Survey. They are termed subclinical
because they are perceived to be less prominent than clinical traits but still measure the degree to

Essay on Fine Arts Education Issues
Fine Arts Education Issues
According to the National Art Education Association s goals for schools, all elementary schools shall
require students to complete a sequential program of art instruction that integrates the study of art
production, aesthetics, art criticism, and art history, (Clark, 1987). Elementary schools are having
difficulty because they are cutting back on the fine arts programming and many non specialist
classroom teachers are expected to integrate the fine arts into their daily curriculum. Most of these
teachers feel inadequate and uncomfortable when teaching these subjects. The children are receiving
inadequate lessons in art education. All elementary schools should expand their curriculum to include

Will teachers have the money...more often than not, the answer is no, (Reardon, 1995). When budget
cuts are underway in school systems, the allotted amount of money for fine arts education is the first
to be reduced. Fine arts education should be considered a core subject in elementary schools. All
budgeting should be done so that all core areas receive an equal amount of money.
Because the fine arts are given a lower status than the traditional core subjects, schools fail to hire
licensed arts specialists. Schools then burden their classroom teachers by implementing poor quality
arts programs into their daily routines to fulfill certain art expectations. This not only discourages and
takes time away from classroom teachers, but also misrepresents the fine arts. Even when a fine arts
specialist is hired, they often are pushed into trying to teach other areas of art than what they were
hired for. In some cases, the requirements for becoming an arts specialist are so relaxed that many
communities don t believe that the fine arts should be taken very seriously. Luckily, national reports
are pushing for higher standards to become a fine arts specialist.
Impact on Students
It has been argued that the arts promote skills and abilities such as problem solving, teamwork, goal

Dangerous Blood Vessels Research Paper
Disease of the heart and blood vessels, also known as heart and blood vessel disease, has many
problems that are mostly directly related to dangerous blood vessel disease. Dangerous blood vessel

The most common stroke is a ischemic stroke. This type of stroke happens when a blood clot is

Affordable Care Act For Employers
If you work for a company and are employed on a part time basis, beware! Due to mandates going
into force by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for employers, anyone working less than
30 hours most likely is going to go without health benefits at some point. PPACA, originally proposed
as a way to help control health care costs, quickly morphed into a vehicle to control the insurance
market. Regardless of your political bent, the end result of PPACA is that millions of employees are
losing their insurance coverage. What the @% #!!!
Many part timers are facing a double whammy from President Obama s health care reform. The law
requires large employers offering health insurance to include part time employees working 30 hours a
week or more. But rather than provide health care to more workers, a growing number of employers
are cutting back employee hours instead. The result: Not only will these workers earn less money, but
they ll also miss out on health insurance at work.
Across the nation, hundreds of thousands of other hourly workers may also see smaller paychecks in
the coming year because of this response to PPACA. The law exempts businesses with fewer than 50
full time workers from this requirement to provide benefits. But big restaurant chains, retailers, and
movie theaters are starting to trim employee hours. Even colleges are reducing courses for part time
professors to keep their hours down and avoid paying for their health premiums.

Gender Roles And Kids Toys Essay
Gender Roles and Kids Toys
In David Barry s article, Guys vs. Men, he discussed the differences between guys and men . This
article made several valid points, including that guys will try and out perform each other where sports
are concerned and that the space shuttle is the ultimate guy toy. My question is why do only guys play
with all the neat toys?
Part of the answer to this question might be that men are encouraged to play with hi tech toys while
girls are given a Barbi doll or a toy oven. The best time to see how these differences are encouraged
by our society is during the Holiday season. The toys I have seen for boys are mainly Star Wars action

In the 1950s that was a logical assumption, but in the 1990s more women work outside of the home.
In 1959 the percentage of women working that were 20 years or older according to the U.S. Bureau of
Labor was 36.3%. In 1997 the figure is 58.5%. For men in 1959 the figure was 83.3%. For men in
1997 the figure is 74.2.
With the increase of women entering the work force it would be more logical to focus on toys that
might encourage the child to develop an interest that could turn into a career. Even though I would
encourage young girls to play with other toys besides Barbi, I am not recommending that boys be
encouraged to play with dolls.
Even computer games are designed with gender in mind. A new computer game that was just released
is a Barbi game where the girls go shopping with Barbi and she can be programmed to call them by
name. I absolutely shudder every time I see this game advertised on T.V. The games that are aimed at
the boys are football, hockey, or Star Wars games.
As boys grow into men and girls grow into women the computer gaming industry begins to focus
more on the male population. It is challenging to try and find a game that is not directed at men. The
type of bias can simply be having a male figure that is designated as the player, this is a technique that

A Brief Look at Cocaine
The drug cocaine is one of the most powerful and harmful drug around. It is addictive and directly
affects the brain. Cocaine is a social issue because people who are addicted to this drug walk around
on the streets and others may feel as if it is a disturbance. Cocaine is made from as pure chemical
called, cocaine hydrochloride, which has been around for over 100 years derived from the coca plant.
Cocaine was first made from a leaf of a coca bush, grew in Peru and Bolivia. In 1900 s it was a man
drug and used to treat illness. Cocaine is sold on the street as a fine white crystalline powdered.
Natives in South America were chewing coca leaves way back in 3000 b.c. these leaves gave them a
lift and helped with exhaustion and hunger. In 2002, an estimation of 1.5 million Americans is
classified as being abused by cocaine in the past 12 months. Adults ages 18 to 25 have the highest rate
of cocaine usage. Overall, men have a higher rate of cocaine use than women do. Current rates of
cocaine users are 2.0 percent American, Indian, or Alaskan Natives, 1.6 percent for African Americans
0.8 percent for Whites and Hispanics, 0.6 percent for Native Hawaiian and 0.2 percent Asians. There

Empowerment and choice are fundamental principles; it is essential that the service user is at the

The Impact Of Humanism In The Renaissance
During the Renaissance, a program of study known as humanism, impacted education, art, politics,
and ultimately shaped the Italian Renaissance. Humanism is defined as a program of study designed
by Italians that emphasized the critical study of Latin and Greek literature with the goal of
understanding human nature. [1] Humanism changed people s views and allowed them to start
portraying people in a more realistic and relatable way. Many artists began to drift away from
religious subjects and instead, began to focus more on individuals and their lives. In addition,
humanism also allowed people to create new architecture that resembled classical constructions.
Humanism impacted many visual arts, which include Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa, Michelangelo s
David, and Filippo Brunelleschi s Dome. The Mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1506 by
Leonardo da Vinci, and is one of the most famous paintings in the world today. The painting is a
portrait of Lisa Gherardini, and was painted for her husband, Francesco del Giocondo. Humanism has
impacted this portrait in various ways. Lisa s smile has been described to be so enigmatic [1] that
people are still trying to interpret the feelings behind her smile. The painting is greatly impacted by
humanism as it focuses on realism and relatability, allowing Lisa to be portrayed as an everyday
woman with the same flaws and impurities as anyone else. This differs from the Middle Ages as all

suffering, as a matter of fact he opposes immortality in that it should not be your option to fulfill all
your desires because after those desires are fulfilled it will lead one s life to boredom and one s life
will lose its meaning. He offered two types of desires, conditional desires which are desires one
wishes to complete during their life and these desires are something they wish to accomplish but are
not the reason for prolonging their lives and categorical desires which are unconditional. Categorical
desires are desires that one looks at and say I want live longer so that I came achieve this desire.
Williams claims that it is the categorical desires that make one wish for an eternal life, but encourages
that it should not be one s necessity to wanting to live forever because after these desires fulfilled
repetitively they cause one to question their existence or meaning of life. To make sense of his
argument, he offered a fictional example of a woman named EM who was given an elixir of life a
portion that will make one s life immortal, EM used this elixir to

What Is Bradford s Use Of The Barbarians In Of Plymouth...
When people of two different cultures meet, they often have unjustified negative perceptions each
other. Such was the case of the Europeans and the Native Americans during the Age of Exploration.
Native Americans would sometimes attack the settlers and look down upon them in disdain. In turn,
the Europeans would fight back while also calling the natives savages. These hostile exchanges
frequently occur because their leaders think too much about the differences between the groups that
they forget the similarities in that they are all humans. Perceptions often change when those of
different cultures put aside those differences and begin to cooperate with each other in a common
goal. In fact, that is exactly what happened when William Bradford and his group of pilgrims came to
Cape Cod. Initially, there was an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that book, he wrote his truthful thoughts of the world around him. When he first spotted the Native
Americans after he had arrived, he noted that these savage barbarians, when they met with them (as
after will appear) were readier to fill their sides full of arrows than otherwise (Bradford 8). In effect,
his usage of the derogatory terms savage and barbarians demonstrates his disrespect for their culture.
Not only does he describe the natives as savage once, but he also continues to use that term nearly five
times. Bradford also uses many other words to characterize the natives negatively. For instance, he
writes that ...the Indians came skulking about them, and would sometimes show themselves aloof off,
but when any approached near them, they would run away... (16). In describing the actions of the
Native Americans, Bradford uses the word skulking, which has a negative connotation due to its close
association to cowardliness. In fact, by writing that they ran away, Bradford implies that they are
cowardly and afraid of the

The Bloody Chamber Analysis
The gothic genre is a style of writing that is characterized by components of horror, disquietude, death
and romance. There are many conventions to the gothic genre which indulges details on gothic
architecture, spirituality and lucid descriptions in the first person along with dialogues. It is widely
accepted that both the novella, Carmilla and the short stories from The Bloody Chamber include these
aspects of gothic literature. Patriarchal dominance is often defined as a system of male domination and
in gothic fiction it is traditional for the male to in fact save the weak and fragile female out of danger;
further dominating his role. Although Carmilla was written during the Victorian Era, one would aspect
a male dominated patriarchal system to be followed, but Le Fanu doesn t succumb to the traditional
but in fact subverts it by casting the villain as female who preys on young and vulnerable women
ultimately for power. However, where Carmilla does indeed follow the traditional gothic horror
narrative where the victims are always presented as succumbing to a temptation that inevitably, has
metaphysical consequences; in Carmilla the victims die from an unknown malady. The Bloody
Chamber reviews on how unimpeachable fairy tales encompass strong socio political undertones such
as gender roles and presents the nameless heroine as woman whom is capable of changing her fate,
whereby she doesn t die like the other wives. Similarly, in Carmilla it can also be

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY
Comparison and Contrast Essay
Definition: In this kind of essay, the aim is to show the similarities and differences of two items, two
people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we
focus more on the similarities though we may mention the differences shortly. When contrasting two
things, we point out the differences between them. The most important point to consider while
planning a comparison and contrast essay is choosing comparable items. e.g. Middle East Technical
University and Bogazici University. We have to make sure that these two items have enough points to
be compared. After writing the comparable points as a list, location, size, reputation, ... Show more

Presentation Of A Banquet Server
It has been one year since I started to be a banquet server. The experience of working as a banquet
server has helped me to appreciate people hard work around the tables serving their clients without
complaining their exhaustion. According to Christa Titus, the author of The Definition of a Banquet
Server, A banquet server is a person who serves food and beverages to guests at an event. The servers
work at many special events such as graduation ceremony or wedding feast. Some of their duties are
serving the ordered dishes, cleaning up the leftovers and assisting guests with their menu items. From
my observation, this career is a low class job which pays a little amount of money for the life expenses
alone. The workers are paid by hour but the wages in each country are varied. I am a student so my
pocket is always empty, and in order to survive in the high cost city, I was desperate to get an income.
One of my friends suggested to me to go to the working board where the local businesses owner
posted the news that they were accepting new workers. There were lots of advertisements when I took
a short look on the board but just one that attracted me: the beautiful poster of a wedding dress looking
for new servers. The poster explained about the available weekend job with the telephone number and
office address for the interview. I was more interested on the poster than working as a banquet server
but in the end, I applied for the job because I need the money to pay my

A Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Of Nebraska Deq, The Papio...
Due to results from a sanitary sewer evaluation of the Nebraska DEQ, the Papio Branch water
treatment plant s (WTP) must place a permanent flow meter at the site of the discharge point where
flow is outputting to the reservoir.
The discharge (decant flow) flow in the pipe varies from continuous to intermittent through the 10
inch gravity ductile iron pipe that is a free fall discharge into the reservoir. The discharge point is a
concrete headwall where the Doppler wave meter will be placed permanently.
A temporary Teledyne Isco 2150 flow meter was placed at the site of the discharge for a period of 24
hours to determine the performance of a meter at the site as well as evaluate current flow conditions.

Figure 2: Teledyne Isco Signature Flow Meter Diagram
The basics needed in order to install the area velocity signature meter are the meter module, a cable,
probe, band, screws/mounting devices, power supply, and outputs. The prices listed below are quotes
from a Teledyne Isco sales representative.
Signature Area Velocity flow meter system: starts at $3,700 o This includes the meter, the sensor, a
32.8 foot cable, a manual, and a pocket guide. The price may change if other options are added.
Sensor carrier for attachment to the mounting rings: $50
Spring Ring for a 10 inch pipe: $91
8 foot power cord: $25
Analog 4 20mA output with two channels: $310
Internal seven digit mechanical totalizer: $115 o Total (minimum for all listed options): $4,291
If the pipe has silting or ragging issues, then a Laser Flow Meter should be used instead of the Area
Velocity meter. The Laser Flow meter is a non contact Doppler meter that provides all of the same
information as the area velocity meter without having a sensor in the water. The benefit of this would
be if the pipe has ragging issues or there is a lot of silting/debris that could potentially get stuck on the
probe and cause the probe to not read the way it should be. This is a much more expensive option it
would provide data without the worry of silt/debris or ragging of the pipe getting in the way. Costs for
this type of meter are listed below.

Modern car friendly strip malls developed from the 1920s, and shopping malls corresponded with the

History
Numerous covered shopping arcades, such as the 19th century Al Hamidiyah Souq in Damascus,Syria,
can be considered precursors to the present day shopping mall.[4] Isfahan s Grand Bazaar, which is
largely covered, dates from the 10th century. The 10 kilometer long covered Tehran s Grand Bazaar
also has a long history. The Grand Bazaar of Istanbul was built in the 15th century and is still one of
the largest covered markets in the world, with more than 58 streets and 4,000 shops.
Gostiny Dvor in St. Petersburg, which opened in 1785, may be regarded as one of the first purposely
built mall type shopping complexes, as it consisted of more than 100 shops covering an area of over
53,000 m2 (570,000 sq ft).
The Oxford Covered Market in Oxford, England opened in 1774 and still runs today.
The Burlington Arcade in London was opened in 1819. The Arcade in Providence, Rhode Island
introduced the retail arcade concept to the United States in 1828. This was a forerunner of today s
shopping mall [5] The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, Italy followed in the 1870s and is closer
to large modern malls in spaciousness. Other

Rene Descartes Wax Argument
Descartes uses the wax argument in order to present his observations in Mediation II . He starts off by
discussing a piece of wax (a body) as fresh from honeycomb. He then provides a detailed description
of it through what his senses perceive. For example, he describes, Its color, shape size are plain to see;
it is hard, cold...if you rap it with your knuckle it makes a sound (Descartes 1988, p.84). He then puts
the wax by fire wherein it melts and all the qualities we had earlier perceived of it disappear. As a
result, Descartes questions that if we eliminate the qualities observed by our sense perception of a
body, can we still claim that the body remains? To clarify, although our initial perception of the wax
differs from our perception now of the wax, we still agree that that the same wax is present: It must be
admitted that it does; no one denies it, no one thinks otherwise (Descartes 1988, p.84). ... Show more

With this in mind, he strongly argues that the sensory perceptions only recognize the qualities of that
body of wax in which the wax presented itself to us. He moves on to saying that by eliminating the
qualities that we now identify as unessential in order to distinguish the wax, we now have something
that is extended, flexible, and changeable (Descartes 1988, p. 84). Therefore, he clarifies that our
sensory perceptions or imagination are not capable enough in order to distinguish a piece of wax,
rather this is the sole judgment of the mind. For example, although we can imagine the wax to
undergo certain changes and still have the remaining qualities of being extended, flexible, etc... we
cannot imagine all the possible changes because that is outside of the parameters of the

Summary Of The Short Story Of The Wavemaker Hass
Connor Wilkinson Allegra Villarreal, Instructor ENGL 1302 17 November 2017 George Saunders,
throughout his collection of short stories, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, explores the lives of fictional
characters through episodes of economic hardship, love lost, death, and disillusionment with the
powers in place. He presents his ideas in a demented and dark way hoping to capture the reader s
attention to our own world around us. In Offloading for Mrs. Schwartz , the narrator and main
character runs a virtual reality store that makes it possible to erase memories through offloading and
the resulting memory modules can serve as entertainment for others. Throughout the story, the narrator
is filled with grief and guilt over the death of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both stories are set in a sort of futuristic setting, one with in a theme park and one in a virtual reality
store yet both deal with the everyday life of both narrators. There is a constant sense of loathing and
self despair by the narrators in both stories. In Offloading , the narrator works a dreary dead end job at
a virtual reality store while he deals with the death of this wife. In Wavemaker , the narrator works at a
menial job in a theme park, having to deal with his wife having an affair with his boss and the death at
his hands of a young park visitor. You can see the depth of failure and misery in both narrators which
is evident by the lack of any apparent societal status and the menial jobs they hang on to for their
meager existence. Both narrators are stuck in their despair over the death of someone in their life and
we see them both struggling to fight and move forward with their lives. George Saunders typically
writes in a dark tone with a hint of humor and satire with a futuristic setting which in disguise is really
a critique on modern day times, a sort of what if scenario about the future. He s a savage satirist with a
sentimental streak who delineates, in these pages, the dark underbelly of the American dream: the
losses, delusions and terrors suffered by the lonely, the disenfranchised, the downtrodden and the

What led millions like me to start gambling? Psychologists and psychiatrists provide the traditional
and widely accepted explanation: individuals are driven to gamble by certain personal psychological
factors. This explanation, however, was applied to pathological gambling well before the recent surge
of the 1970s; therefore, while this explanation may explain why any given individual may become a
pathological gambler, it cannot explain why so many people became pathological gamblers during this
time period. Other non psychological changes must have facilitated increased gambling: technological
advancements, new modes of communications, increased media coverage, and other societal factors.
The Pathological Gambler
The severity of the gambling problem varies; pathological gamblers must be distinguished from
recreational gamblers such as those who occasionally purchase a lottery ticket. The American
Psychiatric Association defines pathological gambling as chronic and progressive failure to resist
impulses to gamble, and gambling behavior that compromises, disrupts, or damages personal, family,
or vocational pursuits (APA 324). Pathological gamblers characteristically become preoccupied with
gambling gambling with increasing amounts of money, trying to win back past losses ultimately
leading to personal and financial ruin. These characteristics, along

Ecological Imperialism by Alfred W. Crosby
In the book Ecological Imperialism: The Biological expansion of Europe, 900 1900 the author, Alfred
W. Crosby, answers many questions about the history of European expansion. It is a well written and
thought out book with great analogies and detailed information that help the reader understand what
exactly Crosby is trying to say. He starts off his book by explaining what the Neo Europes are. They
are a population who settled in the temperate zones and are mainly European descents. The questions
he is attempting to explain is why there is a substantial mass of Europeans in these different lands
which were so far flung from Europe. The European emigrants have scattered among many lands in
the world, and have become the leading ethnic group in most regions outside of Europe. In addition,
Crosby reflects on how the Neo Europes were able to provide vast food excess. His most important
question though, is if European humans have triumphed because of their superiority in arms,
organization and fanaticism... or Perhaps the success of European imperialism has a biological, an
ecological, component. (p.7) Further in the book Crosby explains his questions to the readers. First
and foremost, the history of the stone age is important. The first humans created stepping stones to
create a different future that is today. Looking back in history there were massively giant creatures that
we couldnt even imagine roaming the earth today. Dating back to the stone age they succeeded

The Constitution And The United States
The Constitution was written with one principal issue in mind: factions. This central point of tension
within any government has remained a founding principle in the United States, and a strong national
government is the answer to this issue. By creating a representative and balanced national core the
country is given the best chances to avoid tyranny. While these ideals have worked well in the United
States, the Constitution has fallen short of its original goals. Control of the US is now placed in a two
party system, and too often in corporate control, both factions inadequately checked by the current
system. A document rooted in 200 year old ideology has seen its time come and go, and today the
nation needs a new base, founded on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Madison postulates that a larger national government will more effectively prevent tyranny for two
reasons. He states first that representatives must be raised to a certain number, in order to guard
against the cabals of a few . With only a limited number of representatives, the ability for a faction to
take control is greater. Increased diversity with in the deciding body is necessary to protect against
these dangers. He also states that a larger pool of voters can prevent unethical swaying of elections,
and therefore prevent tyranny. Another view presented in The Federalist Papers was the necessity of a
cumbersome government. An expedient government is one in which laws can be changed quickly, and
one in which justice is easily avoided. An example can be taken from the Committee of Public Safety
during the French revolution. Here, expediency was great and tyranny the result. The constitution
addresses the controlling of faction specifically. The system s aim is to create a cumbersome, checked
government that will prevent a faction control. The principle method employed to achieve this end is
to divide powers, and to create a system of checks and balances to insure that each power achieves
their designated role within the whole of the government. The powers outlined being the legislative,
the executive, and the judicial; each piece checking the others. Take, for example, the legislative

Korean Memoir
The first time I remember fighting with my parents as a child was when the Korean study books came
out. I could not have been more than four when my parents locked me in my room every day after
school to finish writing my Korean letters. I felt frustration and thought Why would I need to learn a
language none of my friends have even heard of? . The harder they pushed me, the harder I pushed
back. While they eventually gave up on the textbooks, this tug of war lingered on for a decade in
many other aspects. The more they played old Korean trot music in the car, the more I gravitated
towards manufactured radio bops. As they made me kimchi (a spicy, fermented, Korean stable), the
more I craved pizza, turkey sandwiches, and that thermos of soup at lunch. I realize now that there are
bigger problems to worry about in the world, but what a person has for school lunch is a crucial part in
growing up. At age 8 I decided to throw away my entire packed ... Show more content on

A real epiphany came to me when a friend of mine told me that she wanted to learn Korean. When I
asked her why she said that she just loved Korean pop music and dramas so much that she wanted to
learn some of the language to appreciate the culture more. This made me realize that coming from a
different background is a blessing and not an embarrassment. Why would I purposely avoid my
culture and try to be Americanized? As I go back to the Korean culture of which I avoided, I realized
that there is no such thing as being Americanized . In the only place that will be a minority majority
nation by the mid century, the US has a distinct identity for accepting other people s cultures. As I
taught myself Korean, made Korean foods with my parents, and watched KPop videos online, I felt
more appreciative, but more importantly, I felt more secure as a person. I had no right to run from who
I was. My parents were the ones who were harassed for being first generation immigrants, not

The Marshmallow Effect Marshmallow Effect Scientists often attribute adaptive and goal directed human behavior to an intellectual control system that organizes, monitors, and alters the settings of lower level perceptive processes. This allows people to suppress or replace impulsive, habitual, or inappropriate actions. The Marshmallow Effect is an experiment conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the 1970 s to study self control in children (Walter, 2013). This experiment is a simple but effective when it comes to the modern study of the human ability to delay gratification. From his books: The theory of moral sentiments and the wealth of nations. How can someone from two hundred and fifty years ago, a Scottish moral philosopher can still be relevant currently in 2016. Why is because of the questions that he asked in his two books above some of which have been through different editions like The Theory of Moral Sentiments. The author of this book Russ Roberts had not even read the book the Theory of Moral Sentiments until his friend Dan Klein at George Mason University suggested him to interview him about it on one of his weekly podcast, EconTalk (Roberts, p.2 3). I did not what to expect when I started reading this but, Roberts giving you a brief insight into Smith s life and more importantly his death. No journal or diary survived Smith s death which surprised me for what type of impact he had back in the 1700s until now (Roberts, p.7). • 6. Costs Of Globalization And Localization Globalization and localization are two conflicting trends in international politics today. Globalization is the spread of peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies from one area of the world to another. (Rosenau 15) Localization is the narrowing of horizons and the confinement of peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies to a particular geographic area. (Rosenau 16) Globalization and localization affect the world s countries in three main areas, politics, economics, and culture. Participation in global organizations also undermines political autonomy of countries. At the same time that globalization of the world is increasing, there are also strong localization sentiments. Many things can be gained by the emphasis of local distinctiveness in politics, culture, and economy. Politically, localization gives governmental autonomy to nations. Countries can spend all their time and effort on programs and policies that emphasize their priorities. Economically, the activities of producers and consumers are constricted to the country, which provides support for domestic businesses and full consumption of the goods they produce. Culturally, localization gives nations a rich sense of heritage and strengthens traditional customs and ideas. (Rosenau 17) Localization serves to strengthen individual countries. While there are benefits to localization, there are also costs. Localization decreases international trade and investment which decreases the amount and variety of goods and services available to people. Localization also prevents new customs and ideas from entering a country that could enrich their culture. Without participation in international political organizations, a country is without allies and support in times of military or economic crisis. Globalization and localization can best be understood by examining current events. One of the most prevalent examples of globalization today is evident in the first ... Pope Urban II roused those in attendance at the Council of Clermont to take up arms and fight for a noble and just cause. I, or rather the Lord, beseech you as Christ s heralds to publish this everywhere and to pers¬e all people of whatever rank, foot soldiers and knights, poor and rich, to carry aid promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile race from the lands of our friends. During this period of Italian history, there was a lack of a stable government and a power struggle between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor. Smart (1999) estimated that the cost of a failed executive to be $2.7 million. This essay is going to focus on what dark side leadership is and how they can get into power when the consequences can be so great. The drawbacks of such research will be discussed and alternative explanations explored. Before concluding that an inclusive approach must be adopted. The majority of research into how destructive leaders can get into power has focussed on the individual themselves. Kenny and Zaccaro (1983) investigated leader emergence and found that 48 82% of the variance in leadership emergence was due to personality. The area of dark side leadership lacks coherence around definitions and causations (Slattery, 2009). The majority of this essay will focus on personality explaining dark side leadership emergence. Firstly, it is important to look at leadership emergence with regards to dark side traits as proposed by Hogan and Hogan (1997). Dark side traits are defined as traits that are undesirable, that are present in excess and not traits in which they are lacking (Hogan Hogan, 2001). They identified 11 subclinical traits that can be present in dark side leaders, e.g. narcissism, by using the Hogan Development Survey. Essay on Fine Arts Education Issues Fine Arts Education Issues According to the National Art Education Association s goals for schools, all elementary schools shall require students to complete a sequential program of art instruction that integrates the study of art production, aesthetics, art criticism, and art history, (Clark, 1987). Elementary schools are having difficulty because they are cutting back on the fine arts programming and many non specialist classroom teachers are expected to integrate the fine arts into their daily curriculum. Most of these teachers feel inadequate and uncomfortable when teaching these subjects. The children are receiving inadequate lessons in art education. All elementary schools should expand their curriculum to include the fine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Will teachers have the money...more often than not, the answer is no, (Reardon, 1995). When budget cuts are underway in school systems, the allotted amount of money for fine arts education is the first to be reduced. Fine arts education should be considered a core subject in elementary schools. All budgeting should be done so that all core areas receive an equal amount of money. Because the fine arts are given a lower status than the traditional core subjects, schools fail to hire licensed arts specialists. Schools then burden their classroom teachers by implementing poor quality arts programs into their daily routines to fulfill certain art expectations. This not only discourages and takes time away from classroom teachers, but also misrepresents the fine arts. Even when a fine arts specialist is hired, they often are pushed into trying to teach other areas of art than what they were hired for. In some cases, the requirements for becoming an arts specialist are so relaxed that many communities don t believe that the fine arts should be taken very seriously. Luckily, national reports are pushing for higher standards to become a fine arts specialist. Due to mandates going into force by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for employers, anyone working less than 30 hours most likely is going to go without health benefits at some point. PPACA, originally proposed as a way to help control health care costs, quickly morphed into a vehicle to control the insurance market. Regardless of your political bent, the end result of PPACA is that millions of employees are losing their insurance coverage. What the @% #!!! Many part timers are facing a double whammy from President Obama s health care reform. The law requires large employers offering health insurance to include part time employees working 30 hours a week or more. But rather than provide health care to more workers, a growing number of employers are cutting back employee hours instead. The result: Not only will these workers earn less money, but they ll also miss out on health insurance at work. Across the nation, hundreds of thousands of other hourly workers may also see smaller paychecks in the coming year because of this response to PPACA. The law exempts businesses with fewer than 50 full time workers from this requirement to provide benefits. But big restaurant chains, retailers, and movie theaters are starting to trim employee hours. Even colleges are reducing courses for part time professors to keep their hours down and avoid paying for their health premiums. Overall, an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This article made several valid points, including that guys will try and out perform each other where sports are concerned and that the space shuttle is the ultimate guy toy. My question is why do only guys play with all the neat toys? Part of the answer to this question might be that men are encouraged to play with hi tech toys while girls are given a Barbi doll or a toy oven. The best time to see how these differences are encouraged by our society is during the Holiday season. The toys I have seen for boys are mainly Star Wars action figures or Nintendo 64 games. For men in 1997 the figure is 74.2. With the increase of women entering the work force it would be more logical to focus on toys that might encourage the child to develop an interest that could turn into a career. Even though I would encourage young girls to play with other toys besides Barbi, I am not recommending that boys be encouraged to play with dolls. Even computer games are designed with gender in mind. A new computer game that was just released is a Barbi game where the girls go shopping with Barbi and she can be programmed to call them by name. I absolutely shudder every time I see this game advertised on T.V. The games that are aimed at the boys are football, hockey, or Star Wars games. As boys grow into men and girls grow into women the computer gaming industry begins to focus more on the male population. It is challenging to try and find a game that is not directed at men. • 20. The Impact Of Humanism In The Renaissance During the Renaissance, a program of study known as humanism, impacted education, art, politics, and ultimately shaped the Italian Renaissance. Humanism is defined as a program of study designed by Italians that emphasized the critical study of Latin and Greek literature with the goal of understanding human nature. [1] Humanism changed people s views and allowed them to start portraying people in a more realistic and relatable way. Many artists began to drift away from religious subjects and instead, began to focus more on individuals and their lives. In addition, humanism also allowed people to create new architecture that resembled classical constructions. Humanism impacted many visual arts, which include Leonardo da Vinci s Mona Lisa, Michelangelo s David, and Filippo Brunelleschi s Dome. The Mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1506 by Leonardo da Vinci, and is one of the most famous paintings in the world today. The painting is a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, and was painted for her husband, Francesco del Giocondo. Humanism has impacted this portrait in various ways. Lisa s smile has been described to be so enigmatic [1] that people are still trying to interpret the feelings behind her smile. Criticizing Lucretius s Argument On Death Criticizing Lucretius s argument on death, which he claims is a distraction to our desires and therefore it is a bad thing for us and that an immortal life will make sure we fulfill our desires. Bernard Williams approached Lucretius s claim with his counterargument in which he opposes Lucretius theory of death by skeptically claiming that death is not always a bad thing because it can also end bad things such as suffering, as a matter of fact he opposes immortality in that it should not be your option to fulfill all your desires because after those desires are fulfilled it will lead one s life to boredom and one s life will lose its meaning. He offered two types of desires, conditional desires which are desires one wishes to complete during their life and these desires are something they wish to accomplish but are not the reason for prolonging their lives and categorical desires which are unconditional. Categorical desires are desires that one looks at and say I want live longer so that I came achieve this desire. Williams claims that it is the categorical desires that make one wish for an eternal life, but encourages that it should not be one s necessity to wanting to live forever because after these desires fulfilled repetitively they cause one to question their existence or meaning of life. Such was the case of the Europeans and the Native Americans during the Age of Exploration. Native Americans would sometimes attack the settlers and look down upon them in disdain. In turn, the Europeans would fight back while also calling the natives savages. These hostile exchanges frequently occur because their leaders think too much about the differences between the groups that they forget the similarities in that they are all humans. Perceptions often change when those of different cultures put aside those differences and begin to cooperate with each other in a common goal. • 25. The Bloody Chamber Analysis The gothic genre is a style of writing that is characterized by components of horror, disquietude, death and romance. There are many conventions to the gothic genre which indulges details on gothic architecture, spirituality and lucid descriptions in the first person along with dialogues. It is widely accepted that both the novella, Carmilla and the short stories from The Bloody Chamber include these aspects of gothic literature. Patriarchal dominance is often defined as a system of male domination and in gothic fiction it is traditional for the male to in fact save the weak and fragile female out of danger; further dominating his role. Although Carmilla was written during the Victorian Era, one would aspect a male dominated patriarchal system to be followed, but Le Fanu doesn t succumb to the traditional but in fact subverts it by casting the villain as female who preys on young and vulnerable women ultimately for power. However, where Carmilla does indeed follow the traditional gothic horror narrative where the victims are always presented as succumbing to a temptation that inevitably, has metaphysical consequences; in Carmilla the victims die from an unknown malady. He then provides a detailed description of it through what his senses perceive. For example, he describes, Its color, shape size are plain to see; it is hard, cold...if you rap it with your knuckle it makes a sound (Descartes 1988, p.84). He then puts the wax by fire wherein it melts and all the qualities we had earlier perceived of it disappear. As a result, Descartes questions that if we eliminate the qualities observed by our sense perception of a body, can we still claim that the body remains? To clarify, although our initial perception of the wax differs from our perception now of the wax, we still agree that that the same wax is present: It must be admitted that it does; no one denies it, no one thinks otherwise (Descartes 1988, p.84). ... Therefore, he clarifies that our sensory perceptions or imagination are not capable enough in order to distinguish a piece of wax, rather this is the sole judgment of the mind. He starts off his book by explaining what the Neo Europes are. They are a population who settled in the temperate zones and are mainly European descents. The questions he is attempting to explain is why there is a substantial mass of Europeans in these different lands which were so far flung from Europe. The European emigrants have scattered among many lands in the world, and have become the leading ethnic group in most regions outside of Europe. In addition, Crosby reflects on how the Neo Europes were able to provide vast food excess. While these ideals have worked well in the United States, the Constitution has fallen short of its original goals. He also states that a larger pool of voters can prevent unethical swaying of elections, and therefore prevent tyranny. Another view presented in The Federalist Papers was the necessity of a cumbersome government. An expedient government is one in which laws can be changed quickly, and one in which justice is easily avoided. An example can be taken from the Committee of Public Safety during the French revolution. Here, expediency was great and tyranny the result.
