Digital And Print Media s Effect On The Self Respect Of...
Electronic and print media have brought about sweeping changes in human life and have had far
reaching implications for all walks of life. Originating in the early 15th century, the printing press
of the newspaper made the first appearance in Germany in the late 1400 s in the mode of news
pamphlets or broadsides (Barber, P. 2014) [1]; and now people are easily capable of getting
information through various digital devices such as sophisticated televisions and smart phones.
Mass communication, however, is likely to have adverse effects on the way people, especially
children and adolescents, perceive knowledge. Although mass mediacurrently provides adults and
teenagers with essential opportunities to receive insight into a wide range of fields, it also raises
knotty problems pertaining to their self esteem, behaviour and actions.
On one hand, mass communication has a detrimental influence on the self respect of the older
generation (over 65 years old). In fact, when advertisers strive for promoting their products, they
do not include images of the elderly because they are often associated with ineffectiveness,
unattractiveness, immobilisation and unhappiness. There are few senior citizens presented on
television and almost all are male: only one in ten characters judged to be 65 or older is a woman
(Delloff, M.L. 1987) [2]. Furthermore, Dail (1988) states that elderly populations suffer from
negative stereotyping more than any other identifiable social group (Tupper. M)

A Character Analysis Of Randle Patrick Mcmurphy
Randle Patrick McMurphy is shown to be a flawed character because of his huge ego, making
him a lecherous gambler high on his own arrogance, and his desire and hunger for power and
control. He thinks he can win any gamble, including a gamble on his life. The stakes are that he
bets the men that he can break Nurse Ratched without letting her get the best of him. Even when
he enters the ward, McMurphy has that kind of swagger kind of walk and he laughs, something
that has not been done by any of the patients on the ward. He is full of brass and swagger and full
of assurance and arrogance with his hanging thumbs in the belt loop of his pants, his heavily
scarred skin, his many tattoos, and his fresh scar on the bridge of his nose (95). After being sent to
Disturbed, McMurphy was confronted with the decision to admit he was wrong and avoid
electroshock therapy, to which he responded to the nurse saying, Those Chinese Commies could
have learned a few things from you, lady. Due to this high arrogance in his confidence, McMurphy
received electroshock therapy along with three other treatments that same very week. This all led
up to the major consequence of lobotomy, in which McMurphy was essentially made a vegetable,
to be nothing more than a cautionary tale on Nurse Ratched s ward.
This powerful and confident character challenges the power of Ratched over the patients in the
ward only to defy her law on the ward. The idea that nothing is gained by McMurphy s rebellion is

Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone
Africa in Cinema Final Paper Professor Rice May 2010 Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone This
semester, the topic of Child Soldiers presented a very interesting dilemma that several countries
in Africa continue to face today. Sierra Leone, in particular, has struck an interest because of the
many films and readings that try to depict this story of the civil war. In class, we have viewed
two films representing the problems with child soldiers in Sierra Leone which include films titled
Blood Diamond and Ezra. Both films represent opposite sides of the spectrum, as Blood Diamond
shows the Western view of child soldiers and Ezra represents the first African view of child
soldiers. Before discussing the two films, there are also two... Show more content on

Their minds are controlled by the RUF and if they did not comply with the orders of the
organization they were immediately killed. This type of life is so unimaginable but still
continues as we speak. In Blood Diamond, the western view of this miserable story of Sierra
Leone is depicted. Having viewed the film several times I now understand the real reason behind
the film. Because it is in a western, Hollywood view, the film can only keep the attention of the
viewers if there is some kind of white influence. With that said, even though the story of child
soldiers is what is meant to be depicted, the love story between a South African Journalist and an
American diamond smuggler is what is represented instead. Instead of focusing on the true
matter at hand, Hollywood insists on using the talents of Leonardo Di Caprio to misrepresent
the issues over diamonds in Sierra Leone. In the film, it is misleading to see how savage like the
children of Sierra Leone are made out to be. The story almost seemed too good to be true in the
film and to anyone who does not know much about the situation in Sierra Leone it may have
been a great film. In my opinion it was a very sad excuse for a film and the film in every way used
the situation in Sierra Leone as an advantage to the boost of some of Hollywood s best actors
careers. The other film viewed in class entitled Ezra depicted the story of child soldiers from an

Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians
Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians The characterisitics of the ideal guardian is
summarized in those words by Socrates in the second book of the Republic : [H]e who is to be a
really good and noble guardian of the State will require to unite in himself philosophy and spirit
and swiftness and strength. . . Swiftness and strength is deemed necessary as the guardian is to
be like a well bred watchdog, who ought to be quick to see, and swift to overtake the enemy
when they see him, and strong too, if when they have caught him, they have to fight with him. The
requirement of spirit is then derived from this, because if he is to fight well he ought to be brave,
and Socrates finds that he is not likely to be brave who has not... Show more content on

Heroes should not be seen lamenting or fearing death. In short, only virtues which are desirable
shall be depicted in their tales, and none that are undesirable which children might imitate. The
gymnastic education that Socrates prescribes is not as complicated. He rather merely says that it
would be sufficient for their purposes that those being reared to be guardians maintain a healthy
diet and follow a simple exercise plan from youth. What is more emphasized by Socrates is that
there should be balance in the study of both gymnastics and music, and that these studies should be
properly harmonized. Those who neglect gymnastics will tend be soft, but on the other hand, those
who likewise neglect music will tend to savagery. As Socrates says, this ferocity only comes from
spirit, which if rightly educated, would give courage, but, if too much intensified, is liable to
become hard and brutal. He continues, On the other hand the philosopher will have the quality of
gentleness. And this also, when too much indulged, will turn to softness, but, if educated rightly
will be gentle and moderate. Thus the traits that make a good guardian are developed and nurtured
through a good balance of musical and gymnastic education. That portion in the second book is
where the qualities are actually first enumerated. The discussion will deviate a little in the third to
the fifth books, and the subject will be brought up again in the sixth book. There Socrates

To Sleep is to Dream
I have often had dreams that were so real and vivid, that I was unable to tell if they truly
happened or occurred in my dreams. Sleeping is very important to everyone. Without proper
sleep, the body s immune system can begin to fail, and then one will become more susceptible to
virus, illnesses, and disease. Even when we are asleep, the human mind does not completely
sleep. When we are asleep, we tend to tune out environmental sounds that occur when we sleep.
For example, I live near a freeway, yet the sounds of it never wake me. The auditory cortex in our
brains respond to stimuli even when we are asleep. For example, I can always wake up when
one of my children calls my name while I am in a deep slumber. There have been many studies
and observations on individuals while they are asleep. These studies are done on individuals
who have sleep disorders. There are four phases of sleep, and when one does not get the proper
sleep, physical and mental issues will occur. Our bodies work in tides, and our minds and bodies
fluctuate. When our bodies seem to synchronize with the 24 hour day, it is referred to as the
circadian rhythm. It is the biological clock that tells us when it is day time we are awake, and
night time is when we are supposed to sleep. Age and experience can affect the circadian rhythm,
and I see this in myself. For instance, when I was in my teens and twenty s, I had no problem
staying up all night, whether it was working a graveyard shift, or

The Separation Of The Churches Of Eastern Orthodox And The...
What actually led to the separation of the churches of Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic?
What are the many differences between these two churches? While there are very few similarities
in these two churches: the Roman Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox church, there are
mostly differences; however, taking a closer look at the split in 1054 will help determine this and
will give insight as to just what those similarities and differences are, how they came about, and
what may have caused the spilt to happen. So what actually led to the split? Between the two
churches there were several disputes that had to do with theological and political differences. For
example, the Investiture Conflict, a clash that started between PopeGregory VII (1073 85) and
Emperor Henry IV (1084 1105) over the investment of bishops with the symbols of their office.
Who held what office and ruled over whom, was the major dispute. The Roman Catholic pope
claimed he held authority over all. In the year 1054 everything was split from the stand points of
theological and hierarchical structures and it has not been the same since.
To begin, when it came to the theological similarities and differences there were definitely more
differences. First, the only similarity was the leadership that each one had. They had disputes over
everything else. Second, the church and the leaders in the Eastern Orthodox Church believed that all
popes were equal and there was no real focus or

Analysis Of Poem Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa
War is one of the most controversial topics in today s society. However, because poetry tends to
focus on the experiences of the author, it is quite widespread. Grief, fear, and pain are some of the
most prevalent emotions in literature. In his poem, Facing It, Yusef Komunyakaa tells his
experience with war and how it has affected him. The poem begins with the author experiencing a
loss of identity as he is at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
. Then, he experiences nostalgia whilst
reminiscing his past. Lastly, he experiences flashbacks that deter his ability to distinguish the past
from the present. Komunyakaa wastes no time in loading his poem with themes. He touches on
grief, war, gaining control, acceptance, and sentimentality. The... Show more content on

This sets the tone because it represents the process of grief. However, over time, they feel
emotions from anger to depression, to acceptance, etc. In these stages, emotions and memories
catch up to them forcing them to release their emotions. The author also uses stones as a symbol
of strength and courage. The line, I m stone, translates to I m strong or I m brave. In the line,
...the stone lets me go, the author uses personification by giving life to the stone. It means that
the stone or bravery is no longer weighing on the author. In other words, the author no longer
feels obligated to suppress his emotions. The line, He s lost his right arm / inside the stone.,
translates to He s lost his right arm while being brave, in reference to service in the Vietnam war.
Lastly, the author uses methods to produce a description that paints an image in the reader s mind.
The lines, The sky. A plane in the sky. / A white vet s image floats/ closer to me, then his pale eyes
/ look through mine. /, puts the reader in the author s position.
The poets use of form helped build the theme of the poem. Komunyakaa uses open form, a structure
that follows no guidelines, in the poem. Specifically, he uses free verse this form consists of lines
that have irregular meter, no stanzas, and no rhyme. The author included both stressed and
unstressed syllables, as well as many feet in the lines of the poem. This connects to the theme

through his previous experiences that in war, reconstruction efforts are inevitable. His critical

Battle Of San Jacinto Case Study
Strategic Setting Depending on the perspective, the strategic factors of the Battle of San Jacinto
were either to re align Texas with the Mexican government, as it had pulled away in rebellion due
to Anglo interference from the U.S. (Pedro, 1921). A second perspective of the strategic factor of
the Battle of San Jacinto had to do with Texans, in particular Anglo Texans from the Southern U.S.,
wanting to extend the influence of slavery over the region, intentionally flaunting and ignoring
Mexicos anti slavery polices (Tindall and Shi, 2013). A third perspective, offered by Anderson and
Wooster (2016) is that strategically the Battle of San Jacinto was the result of tyrannical oversight
and behaviors by Santa Anna and the Mexican government over Texas. It should be noted that the
strategic factors listed are over arching causes of the Mexico Texas War for Independence, which

The History of Turkey Essay
Throughout history, the middle east has often been the focus of news reporters. A middle eastern
country that has not been exempt from this, is Turkey. Turkey has not only been a focus, but it also
has had a very long, complicated history.
The history of turkey is a very long and detailed one. Turkey was originally settled by groups of
farmers probably thousands of years ago. Today, historians call these people the Hittites. During
their time, the Hittites were ruled by kings, and had their high officials buried in shaft tombs.
Shortly after the Hittites moved in, Indo Europeans moved into the area, and formed the kingdom
of the Hittites, with the capital being Hattusa. The kingdom survived for hundreds of years.

an empire. By 1453, they captured Constantinople. The Ottomans changed the capital s name from
Constantinople to Istanbul. During the 1500 s, the Ottoman Empire expanded and reached the
height of its power. After this time the empire began to fall apart. During the 1800 s, the
Ottoman Empire had fallen into such a state of depravity that it became known as The Sick Man
of Europe . In 1829, after losing a war against France, Britain, Russia, and Greece, the Ottomans
were forced to give up control of the Danube River. During the mid to late 1800 s, Turkey lost
many pieces of land by losing the war in 1829, and the Russo Turkish Wars. Turkey lost Algeria
and Tunisia to France, and Cyprus and Egypt to the United Kingdom. However, Cyprus and Egypt
remained part of the Ottoman Empire until 1914. During the 1890 s a group of students and
military officers secretly banded together and opposed Sultan AbdГјlhamit s strict policies. The
most influential group of these people was the Committee of Union and Progress. In 1908,
members of this group revolted against AbdГјlhamit in order to force him to reinstate a
constitutional government. This group made AbdГјlhamit surrender his throne in 1909. In 1914,

Media And Aging Process Analysis
When you re an adolescent, you will go through puberty and grow. The media might show tall
people as clumsy because their naturally slower than short people because of bone structure or a
number of other factors. This is untrue, as some people are genetically predisposed to being tall,
and as such can take advantage of it by participating in activities that favor height, such as
basketball. Some people develop body hair slower than others, and the media might portray that as
something to be ridiculed, but everybody is different and the body works in different ways. Some
people s family history will determine how young or how old their body matures, and understanding
this will be beneficial to the mental healthof an impressionable young adult.
Sometimes the media might show middle aged people as having a mid life crisis or otherwise
not being able to cope with getting older. There are many people that go through this, but there
are also people that are fine with it and eating right and exercising will usually help slow the
aging process. Middle aged adults also are usually mentally tough and aware that they are getting
older but will try and remain youthful. The media takes advantage of this by marketing products
designed to reverse the aging process. Examples of this include anti wrinkle cream or hair dye
which is used to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Insomni Behavioral Interventions For Insomnia
Insomnia
Many people experience insomnia and are not even aware of how common this disorder have
become. This paper is to present an overview of behavioral interventions for insomnia. Behavioral
interventions for insomnia include relaxation training, stimulus control therapy, sleep restriction
therapy, sleep hygiene, paradoxical intention therapy, cognitive restructuring, and other approaches.
These are briefly explained in detail. Scientifically, insomnia is a general clinical term that refers to
a difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep. Scientists contend today that insomnia is widely
prevalent in the general population, especially in the elderly and in those with medical and
psychiatric disorders. It is noted that several people complain about having a struggle when it
comes to sleeping.
This phenomenon is known as an ailment. Basically, insomnia affects the individual who has
acquired symptoms that disturbs their sleeping. and those who suffer with this often have low
disposition and are irritable. On the other hand, most patients are not functional during the day due
to not getting the sleep required at night. There are a few common sleeping disorders such as sleep
apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy but insomnia is the focus. Due to the large number of
sleep disorders and complaints, the health care professionals are increasing the awareness on sleep
disturbances to better assist patients.
For the proper diagnoses overnight sleep studies are

music to represent different events a couple may face, while using diction, specific word choice
at certain points, to metaphorically represent the situations the couple, which turned out to be

story then takes a darker turn using words such as Out here the good girls die (Flowers 32) to

where all hope seems lost, like when Cinderella lost her shoe and the prince couldn t find her.
Then, it all comes together to resolve and make the perfect ending like when the prince and
Cinderella found each other and fell in love. In this fairytale, however, Flowers indicated that it
seemed that this story wouldn t have a perfect ending after all. Flowers also uses Cinderella to
relate her story to the couple s time urgency; Cinderella only had a certain amount of time left in

The History of Surfing
Today surfing is a multi billion dollar industry. It has been taken up on every continent on Earth.
There have been waves surfed that were created by the breaking of an arctic glacier. China has
built an indoor wave pool a thousand miles from the closest ocean that perfectly simulates a real
breaking wave. People are finding ways to surf by any means necessary. Anyone that has ever
picked up a board and paddled into a break owes that experience not only to the ancient pioneers
that created the sport but also to the pioneers that popularized it.
The origins of catching and riding a wave began in Western Polynesia over three thousand years
ago. The first ones to catch a wave were fishermen who discovered riding waves was an efficient
method of getting to shore with their bounty. Eventually, catching waves transformed into a pastime
instead of every day work. There is no exact record of when surfing took the upright sport that we
know today. It is known that, during the 15th century, the people of the Sandwich Isles were
entrenched in the pastime of he enalu or wave sliding, in old Hawaiian. Europeans first witnessed
surfing in the late 1700 s when first contact was made with the Tahitians. Explorer Captain James
Cook wrote in his journal about how a Tahitian man caught waves with an outrigger canoe just for
fun: On walking one day about Matavai Point, where our tents were erected, I saw a man paddling

of comics. After the golden age of comics came the silver age of comics, which began 1952 and
ended in the early 1990s, it was one of the first time the comic book industry s really started to
introduce the superheroroles into their comics. The first hero that really is in the golden age of
comics this hero was a masked detective who has similar features to batman but just not as
popular known as the The Clock. The Clock first appeared in the comic book Funny Pages #6
Nov. 1936. During The Golden Age, comics were mainly based on war and horror stories. In 1954

The vast majority of dudes (are) doing this high testosterone sort of storytelling, and so we put
our fantasy on the plate on the pages, said McFarlane regarding the stereotypical portrayal of
women in comic books. As much as we stereotype the women, we do it with the guys. The guys
are all good looking, not too many ugly superheroes. They ve all got their hair gelled back. They
have got perfect pecs on them. They have no hair on their chest. I mean, they are Ryan Gosling
on steroids. Right? They are all beautiful. So we actually stereotype and do it to both sexes. We
just happen to show a little more skin when we get to the ladies. although still a big issue today
this was a major concern for the parents buying comics for their children they did not want to
buy something for there kids that was showing women with well developed assets who were
wearing skin tight clothing or showing as much skin as they posible could without having the
female character just be completely nude. Another source of much indignation is how many
female characters, when they are not getting mangled or raped, are used as little more than eye
candy for the male masses sex symbols whose personalities are as flat as their cup sizes are
disproportionately huge, whose roles are as thin as the fabric of their poorly designed, anatomy

Paget s Disease Of Bone
Paget s disease of bone (PDB), also known as osteitis deformans, is named after Sir James Paget,
an English surgeon, who first described the disease in 1877. Since then, research has determined
that 15% to 40% of cases are inherited and the balance is thought to be caused by exposure to a
slow viruses like human respiratory syncytial virus or canine distemper virus, however, symptoms
may not appear for many years afterward. In about half of cases that are hereditary, a mutated gene
has been isolated that is known to cause osteoclasts to become rogue and un regulated. PDB causes
long bones to grow unnaturally long causing pain and osteoarthritis, hearing loss and nervous
systems disorders from pressure on the brain caused by cranium overgrowth,... Show more content

Then, characteristic x ray signatures and elevated total alkaline phos phatase (ALP) levels
confirm the disease and bone scans and individual bone x rays determine the extent of damaged
areas. However, total ALP levels remain within reference levels as long as the disease is
monostotic, that is, involving a single bone. Total ALP is not a marker until remodeling has
gone far astray in several bones that are grossly misshapen. And, because it is widely recognized
that prevalence and severity of PDB is decreasing in the world population, total ALP levels
remain within reference ranges far longer, making anecdotal discovery rare. Although there is
no cure for PDB, early detection is vital for commencement of diet, exercise, and drug regimens
that significantly mitigate debilitating symptoms and disease progression. Per Magnusson,
Michael Davie and Christopher Sharp compared total ALP and three isoforms of ALP (B/I, B1,
B2) of 37 patients with various stages of PDB and a control group of 66 healthy patients. Their
findings revealed that the B2 isoform of ALP is increased in asymptomatic PDB patients with a
validity of 80% on a characteristic comparison curve of true postive to false positive ratios. High
bone B2 isoform ALP levels may be of use in early discovery, however, only total ALP levels are

Expanded Colon Essay
A 22year old Chinese man was finally relieved of faeces that had accumulated over 20 years. The
man had been constipated throughout his life according to the report. His constipation was never
fully relieved by the use of laxatives or other medications till surgeons intervened by opening up
the abdomen to remove the poop and extremely large colon. The 3 hour operation was successful.
According to the doctors, the man was nine months pregnant and looked like he could explode at
any time. Thankfully, he is expected to recover from this painful, distressing and embarrassing
condition. Why did he become severely constipated? He had a condition called Hirschsprung s

complications of Hirschsprung s disease. Some of the other complications include: Perforation
Bleeding Ulcers Infection of the intestines (enterocolities) which is life threatening In view of
these complications, there may be a need to surgically remove the segment of the bowel with
missing nerves and reduce the length of the colon too. When Should a Baby pass the first Poop
The baby is expected to pass the first stool known as meconium within 24 to 48 hours after birth.
Meconium consists of what the baby ingested while in the womb. It includes mucus and
amniotic fluid. The arrival of meconium is a good sign of a functioning digestive system. A
parent should become worried if a full term baby fails to pass meconium in 48 hours. There may

premature babies should have passed stool by the ninth

Captain Americ The American Dream
Captain s Duty From Captain America s birth, he symbolized America. In and out of costume,
Captain America, AKA Steve Rodgers, exemplifies all the best qualities of America. He embodies
the American dream. America continues to grow more diverse every day, yet still Steve remains the
undying patriotic example of what it means to be American.
The American dream in simple terms is the fulfillment of the ideals the America was founded on
with equal respect. To go into more detail, the American Dream allows all people the rights of
liberty, autonomy, justice, dignity, the pursuit of happiness, and the ability to hold the country s
leaders accountable when they fail to uphold these rights. Because the American dream applies to

The patriotic symbol of the American dream has numerous times dissented from the ruling political
powers. Steve Rodgers lives the life of a patriot through and through, but it is important to
understand what it means to live patriotically. Captain Americas patriotism doesn t hinge on blind
passion of one s country right or wrong or on the us versus them mentality produced during war
times. These types of patriotisms prevent the betterment of the world at large. These exclusionary
patriotisms neglect the dignity of other peoples and creates the illusion that anyone who thinks
differently belongs to the them party. Instead, Cap s patriotism lies of Stephen Nathanson s
philosophic moderate patriotism, which balances devotion to one s country with ethical demands to
care for all (White 147). Captain America embraces the shared humanity of people across national
borders. He would strongly support Nathanson s claim that so long as devotion to one s country do
not lead to immoral actions, then patriotism can be laudable. When concern for the own country
blinds people to the legitimate needs and interests of other nations, then patriotism becomes a vice
(White147). Captain America believes countries have the right to pursue its interest, but this should
be done with consideration of other nations and peoples and not at the cost of the countries
principles. Captain America s cosmopolitan patriotism puts him at odds with the government three

African American History in the Poems of Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was an African American poet who was one of the first black voices to be
heard in America. He was distinct among his contemporaries with his writing about the blacks
experiences and history. His pride of his race and history was apparent in most of his works. In
his poem, The Negro Speaks of Rivers his pride of his history and civilization is apparent by the
repetition of the pronoun I in most of the lines. He is proud that his roots go back to the ancient
civilizations which where associated with the great Rivers of Asia and
Africa namely the Euphrates, the Nile and the Congo.

It was through the black people that the American civilization was built. Since they were the ones
who did all the labor in building this country, therefore it was their right to be treated with some
respect, dignity and be acknowledged in society.
Hughes tackled the same history of black people in his poem Mother to
Son , but this time from a different perspective. It is the perspective of a mother narrating to her
son her sufferings and her strength in overcoming the hardships she encountered in life. She is
telling the son that life for her ain t been no crystal stair/ It had tacks in it/ And splinters /And
boards torn up . The life of this black mother was full of troubles, of white people mistreating her,
even raping her. As she was poor and suffering from racial discrimination, she had to work in
humiliating jobs in order to earn a little sum of money that does not suffice her needs. She had to
be sometimes goin in the dark/ where there ain t been no light . This line implies it was not she
that was dark, but it was the darkness of horrible deeds of the whites that made her suffer.
Nevertheless, she did not give up; instead, she kept struggling and climbing that hard stair of life.
Therefore, she is advising her son and encouraging him to have hope and never give up.

Physicists choose the underground for its shielded affect, and because WIMPs have a special
quality; they cannot be absorbed or reflected unlike other matters. When the WIMP hits the
detector underground, the particle s energy transfers to this detector and physicists will notice a
small thermal or light signal (Hooper, 28). XENON 100 is an example of this experiment. This
piece of equipment contains cold liquid xenon, a heavy gas present in the Earth s atmosphere.
Underground WIMP detectors are a very viable and useful equipment, and the sensitivity of
these detectors have been increasing every 15 months (Hooper, 28). The Large Hadron Collider,
LHC for short, is also used to observe potential WIMP occurence. The LHC has its home
underground, built as a 17 mile ring. It is a massive circular particle accelerator, as it contains
high energy protons colliding with one another at near the speed of light. This is done to
understand how the Big Bang came to be, and what was after the universe s explosion. Because of
this recreation, it is thought WIMPs are being produced in the LHC as well. Unfortunately, only a
small fraction of the proton collisions result in WIMPs, and the particles are still invisible, so they
cannot be directly observed. However, as physicists continue to improve the LHC, the Large

2. The defect in Caleb s heart allows blood to mix between the two ventricular chambers. Due to
this defect would you expect the blood to move from left to right ventricle or right to left
ventricle during systole? Explain your answer based on blood pressure and resistance in the heart
and great vessels. It goes left to right during systole. The difference is normally, oxygen poor (blue)
blood returns to the right atrium from the body, travels to the right ventricle, and then is pumped
into the lungs where it receives oxygen. Oxygen rich (red) blood returns to the left atrium from the
lungs, passes into the left ventricle, and then is pumped out to the body through the aorta. But when
an infant has ventricular septal defect it still allows oxygen rich (red) blood to pass from the left
ventricle, through the opening in the septum, and then mix with oxygen poor (blue) blood in the
right ventricle. (ROCHESTER.EDU) but instead when systole occurs the blood gets mixed because
of the septum therefore heart needs to pump harder to ensure that enough blood with oxygen
reaches the body.

deoxygenated blood (blue).

The Importance Of Technology Over Time
Over time the viewpoints regarding technology and the importance of it changes depending on the
different situations of the time. The three texts Feed by M.T Anderson, The Time Machine by H.G

times when they discuss technology. In the novel Feed, the use of a machine that gives access to
the internet and retrieves information for the user which is implanted in a person, a feed, being
used to illustrate a problem with technology causing complacency. The Time Machinefollows a
similar negative view of technology being a cause for the complacency of society because of the
reliance on said technology. As We May Think is a more forward thinking article pushing for the
continual advancement of technology that supports society through an idea referencing to the
computer and the internet we have today. As for how the political climate influenced the texts,
during the time As We May Think was written a significant amount of tension between the world
was present, toward the tail of World War I. On the contrary both Feed and The Time Machine
were
written during a calmer time period, less significant political conflicts present, coming up with a
conclusion that technology will do society a disfavor. Bush mentions multiple innovations, such as
voice recording and film technologies, that have been happening during his time bringing up that

The Creation Of Medical Aircraft During The Vietnam War
The United States Army s idea of medically evacuating wounded Soldiers by use of helicopters,
during the Vietnam War, was not a new concept. The Army used the Bell Aircraft Corporation s H

Army redesigned the concept of medical evacuation by using a larger helicopter that could carry
medics and first responders. (Dorland Nanney, 1982) This larger aircraft, the UH 1 Iroquois, was
first used by the 57th Medical Detachment in Vietnam. Once in country, the medical service corps

The terrain of Vietnam plague the ground force commanders and complicated medical evacuations.
At the time of the medical detachment s arrival in Vietnam, the ground forces were transporting
their wounded to open fields in the jungle so that aeromedical helicopters could land and evacuate
the casualties. Due to this, the Army began developments in equipment and devices that could
prove to be a reliable tool in the jungle environment. The army went through several trial and error
experiments including the collapsible box platform and the Jungle Canopy Platform System.
Neither of these two devices proved to be dependable in a war time operation. Ground force
commanders would not use the devices as they felt that the tool could create a vulnerability. Finally,
the Army created the hoist which gave aeromedical evacuation crews the ability to come to a hover

The Porters Five Forces Model
The Porters Five Forces Model was devised by Professor Michael Porter. The aim of the model is
too analyse the nature of competiton within an industry. This means that the porters five forces
model can be a powerful tool (E. Dobbs, 2014). The first of the forces is competition in the
motor industry. There is a high level of competition within the motor industry as the companies
have a high level of competition between themselves especially when it comes to marketing and
innovation this is seen on a daily basis with the sometimes odd tv adverts used by car companies
in order to differentiate themselves. The industry has many firms in it that have chosen to
specialse across all areads such as cost, fuel efficient, brand image and style. However the Auto
industry is segmented as it ranges from high cost and very specialist companies all the way
down to low cost mass production companies. This can be seen as you wouldn t say that Ferrari
is competiting with KIA. However there is a high level of competition between firms. The next of
porters five forces is the bargaining power of buyer which in this case is customers. The customers
of the Auto Industry are what provides the revenue for all of the incumbents in the market. The
result of this is that there are low switching costs in the market place this means that customers
would be able to switch between competing firms for no extra cost. This ties in with the next point
which is that customers also have access to accurate

Juvenile Delinquency Is Not Acceptable
Juvenile delinquency is when minors commit criminal acts or offenses that are against the law and
in which adult prosecution is not acceptable. It is interesting to note that this was not always the
case. Before juvenile delinquency was established, juveniles were trialed and treated as adults.
There was no such thing as a juvenile court, juvenile correctional facilities, or juvenile support
groups, when the juvenile deviated. Later, many believed that when juveniles deviated that it meant
that they needed guidance and support to help them. This change was made mainly because the
value of children increased due to the fact that children were beginning to live longer and were
healthier. Throughout the semester it has been intriguing to learn more about this topic and learn
different theories related to it, as well as delinquency triggers. There are four theories that relate to
juvenile delinquency. Strain Theory is when the juvenile experiences strain, or stress, which as a
result causes them to commit delinquent acts. Strain can be caused by the juvenile failing to
achieve goals, and/or the loss of positive stimuli or the presentation of negative stimuli. Social
Learning Theory is when juveniles learn to engage in delinquent acts by being reinforced,
positively or negatively, in some way. Control Theory is when the juvenile varies with the levels of
control, which causes them to commit delinquent acts. Labeling Theory is when juveniles are
labeled as bad or delinquent ,

uniqueness of the common examples that have been accented in anthropological research, like the

Human Skeletal System And The Human Body
The femur, is the longest, heaviest, and strongest bone in the entire human body. In the human
body, all of the body s weight is supported by the femurs which are located in the human thigh.
The femur is classified as a long bone and extends from the hip down to the knee. The head of the
femur articulates with the pelvis to form the hip joint. The neck is a narrow connection between
the head of the femur and the diaphysis of it. The diaphysis is the shaft of the bone and the facet is
the small smooth articular surface at the end of the femur. The femur is made up of spongy bone,
compact bone, bone marrow, arteries, and veins. The femur bones are responsible for transmitting
force from the tibia to the hip joint. The femur is a very important part of the skeletal system. When
discovering the skeletal system and its interrelations you can learn a lot about the body. The human
skeletal system consists of exactly 206 bones, it also contains tendons, ligaments, and cartilage that
connects them together. The skeletal system performs vital functions such as support, movement,
protection, bloodcell production, calcium storage, and endocrine regulation. Infants are born with
270 bones, but some of them fuse together as the body develops. A bone in the skeletal system are
typically dense and tough on the outside, like a compact bone. When going deeper in the bone the
next layer is called spongy bone, which is lighter and more flexible. Some of these bones contain

Nitrate Nitrite
However, nitrate reductase can further reduce nitrite to ammonia or molecular nitrogen, which does
not react with the reagents and does not produce a colour change. To verify nitrate has been reduced
past nitrite, zinc powder is added to the medium. If the medium does not change colour after the
addition of zinc powder, then the nitrates in the medium have been reduced further. If the bacterium
does not use nitrate, then the addition of zinc powder will reduce the nitrates in the medium to
nitrite, changing the medium to a pink or red colour.

The Importance Of Elementary Writing
Writing in a horizontal line is essential for students in the elementary setting. Writing first begins in
preschool, within the following year student s knowledge of words increases greatly. A student s
writing and reading skills only continue to grow as he/she reaches middle and high school. Students
use writingin a variety of different ways especially in the elementary setting. Writing may be used to
describe a picture, how the student is feeling, to share information and more. It is essential that
students are given the opportunity to demonstrate strong writing skills throughout elementary
school. Although writing is essential in the development of students, many students lack the
foundational writing skills needed to be effective. Only 25% of students in the National Assessment
of Educational Progress were classified as competent writers (Persky, Daane, Jin, 2003).
The purpose of this study is to assist the student (Jaden) with writing in a horizontal line across the
page when forming sentences. Jaden can write complete sentences without the assistance of
teachers, but his sentences are never in order. Jaden tends to write words within the sentence
anywhere when provided with a sheet of paper. Being able to form sentences correctly across the
page is important for the student to understand what he is writing. When asked to read back what
he wrote, the student is often unable because of his inability to form sentences correctly across the
page. The task is when given

The Latest Plague
In the Victorian Age occurred the revival of religion following the moral principles of the Bible.
It was thought that if everybody could live by the ideas that the Bible suggests, the world would
be a better place, without crime, jealousy or any other sin given by the Ten Commandments. This
period of belief in God and Bibleended very soon, because of the different publications regarding
the natural elements and the genesis thru science.
The poem The Latest Decalogue is a satire addressed to the society of the Victorian age, who
thought themselves to be very religious persons, but in fact they were not. Clough uses here The
Ten Commandments, how they were given by God and how are they seen and applied on every day
s life. The irony starts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the one hand, God disapproves with the action of coveting, but generation by generation it
continued to be the reason why people prosper. At school we are learnt to be better and have
bigger grades than the others, to have a better job, better cloths, house or car. The same was back
then, they wanted to be in the spotlight with all they did.
The ending offers a perspective about towards what our love should be transmitted. The poet
implies that we should always love God, as he is our master, who keeps an eye on us, seeing what
we are doing and what kind of persons are we, in order that He will know if he will prepare a place
for us in His kingdom. But, loving God, and not loving your neighbour, as many are doing does not
love God at all. God created us according to His face and His affinity. Acting as we do not love
others is a real prove that we do not love God, Who has put a part of Him in every one of us.
To sum up, creating this poem, Clough succeed in satirize the religious people around him. He
compares the lessons that our Creator has left for us and how people are applying them to their
life. It is a major distinction between how they should act and think and how they really are. This
poem is still available for today s generation, whose moral behaviour is not so much changed as the

Juvenile Boot Camps Essay
Running Head: Juvenile Boot Camps
Juvenile Boot Camps

Abstract
This paper will discuss the history of the canine dog. This paper will also discuss the different
breeds of the canine and its purposes. This paper focuses on the training, handling, and the overall
care of the canine by the police or other agencies involving canines.
Increased juvenile delinquency and engagement in crime has been an issue of concern to many
parents and the authority in general. Although juvenile crimes have been there even in the past,
they have been increasing at an alarming rate and the intensity of crimes committed has also
increased. However the criminal justice system has set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example in some cases individuals are sentenced to a term of participation in boot camps for
about 90 to 180 days which can substitute a jail term of about 10 years. However the equation of
boot camp term and the jail term substituted usually varies with the boot camp facility and the
state. In case juvenile offenders are not wiling to serve in boot camps, then they are compelled to
serve their jail term. Therefore participation in boot camps is not compulsory and individuals can
prefer to serve their original jail term instead. (Cowles, 2005)
The first boot camp was opened in the United States in Georgia and Oklahoma around 1983. The
initial set of the boot camps was to maximize the rate of deterrence, reduce the crowding in juvenile
prison, to decrease the cost of penal and the correction system, and in order to reduce the rate of
recidivism. Boot camps were however supposed to find a middle ground between restrictive prison
system and the less strict probation. Boot camps are therefore less restrictive than the system in
prisons and harsher than the system in probation.
In the recent past, there had been some disquiet from some parents and juveniles about their life in
juvenile camps. It is argued that some boots camps have been exposing juvenile to harsh military
training exposing them to various dangers which they may not be prepared for. For example in
2006, boot camps were banned in Florida following the death of Lee Anderson

How was the text borrowed from other texts, and with what effects? how has he borrowed from
other texts and to what effects?
Introduction:
Thesis: Camus has borrowed philosophical ideas from other writers which has influenced his
interpretation for the existence of an individual mostly described within his works with The Myth
of Sisyphus as well as his other well known novels.
Prominent in Europe in the 19th and 20th century
Existentialism is defined by the slogan Existence precedes Essence. This means:
We have no predetermined nature or essence that controls what we are, what we do, or what is
valuable for us.
We are radically free to act independently of determination by outside influences.

In accepting their fate, Sisyphus and Oedipus have abandoned hope, and so their fate does not seem
horrible to them. On the contrary, they have finally found the only genuine happiness.
Oedipus becomes a tragic figure only when he becomes aware that he has killed his father and
married his mother. He also remarks that both Sisyphus and Oedipus are ultimately happy, that they
conclude that all is well.
Sisyphus: He knows that he will struggle forever and he knows that this struggle will get him
nowhere. This awareness is precisely the same awareness that an absurd man has in this life.
The above point also relates to Oedipus where he knows that being acceptable for his his
situations and faith, his point of view for society will change and will learn to decide his own
faith. freedom of choice being able understand that only you control your own life.
Camus identifies Sisyphus as the archetypal absurd hero, both for his behavior on earth and for
his punishment in the underworld. He displays scorn for the gods, a hatred of death, and a passion
for life. (going against dostovesky s ideas on faith and religion

Is Lady Macbeth To Blame
Have you ever been tempted to do something that you knew was morally wrong. This happens a
lot in life, but some cases are more serious than others. Sometimes, the people who a person loves
love and trust the most could tempt a person to do terrible things. Macbeth , written by William
Shakespeare, is a play that recognizes that this is possible, even to people who were a good
hearted person, in this case Macbeth. The character who is the most responsible for the downfall of
Macbeth is Lady Macbeth because she constantly taunted and tempted Macbeth to murder King
Duncan. Many people believe that Lady Macbeth was tricked by the Devil to tempt Macbeth to
murder Duncan, and they then accuse of the witches of being the cause but that is not the case.

When Macbeth was trying to stop things from going too far Lady Macbeth decides to taunt him.
But screw your courage to the sticking place [a]nd we ll not fail (1.7.70 71). During this
discussion Lady Macbeth basically calls Macbeth a coward and that if he follows her plan they
will succeed. That was a major reason for Macbeth actually deciding to murder action. Also Lady
Macbeth tries to make him seem like a traitor when he backs out of the plan, which is the starting
point for Macbeth s downfall. William Shakespeare tries to show readers that even though Macbeth
was evil as king, he is not entirely at fault for becoming filled with greed and anger. Even though
people control their own actions they can be tempted to do wrong things due to peer pressure.
Although some can just blame Macbeth, we need to remind ourselves that Macbeth wasn t going to
kill Duncan, until Lady Macbeth persuaded him to. Even if it was mostly Macbeth s fault for not
controlling his actions, Macbeth reminds us that when more than one person are involved with an
action of evil, there is never just one person to

Essay about Tools of the Craft
Tools of the Craft So you have decided you want to write. Perhaps you may feel you need to write.
Sometimes this urge inside you is so sweet and urgent that you find yourself imagining the smooth
feel of the keyboard beneath your fingertips. You can hear the tap tap of the keys as your fingers
fly over them, forming words, sentences, paragraphsand pages of images that will flow from your
mind to another s in a bizarre and wondrous kind of telepathy. This desire may come to you as you
are studying, attending classes, or working, making you yearn for the time when the tedious details
of life might be abated, if only for a moment, so that you can finally work on your story.

It is highly recommended that this book be read first whether the writer is confident about their
ability to follow the rules of grammar or not.
After you have read enough of Strunk White to feel somewhat confident (or even frustrated) by
the rules that you already knew or forgot, examine Style by Joseph M. Williams. Mr. Williams is
a professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Chicago. You may have already
encountered another book published by the University on the subject. Fear not; Williams book is
not an immense conundrum of rules in the same vein as The Chicago Manual of Style. I prefer to
think of it as a response to Strunk White; Williams will address many of the same rules of writing
from a refreshingly unique viewpoint. Some readers may find his work incredibly dull and prefer
The Elements of Style for its short and simple guidelines. Or you may find yourself enjoying a
newfound sense of freedom from the rather liberal suggestion of Williams that some rules are, in
fact, meant to be broken. If you are of an analytical or logical frame of mind you may enjoy the
many diagrams and trees he created as examples of his statements. If you do not fit into this group,
do not let these examples get in the way of the underlying message. Writing, Williams appears to
suggest, is not about rules and

Pediculosis Research Paper
Pediculosis Pediculosis, more widely known as lice, is a transmittable skin infection caused by
a blood sucking parasite known as louse. Lice s main supply of sustenance is the blood of their
host, they usually feed about five times per day causing severe itching, also known as pruritus.
Pruritus can lead to sores, which can lead to a secondary bacterial skin infection. Lice can affect
the hair, body, and pubic region. In the United States alone it is found that from 6 million to 12
million new cases of head lice are diagnosed in school children each year. Pediculus humanus
capitis infects the head, which can mainly be found on the scalp, on the back of the neck, and
behind the ears. An eyelash infestation can occur, but it is unlikely.... Show more content on

Personal hygiene is major factor for this infestation. It commonly occurs among people who do
not have the luxury of changing clothes or showering often. It is prevalent in refugee camps and
in homeless people. Body lice resides in the seams of clothing, and they are primarily found by
the trunk, neck, and thighs. Pubic lice is caused by Phthirus pubis which is commonly referred
to as crabs because of its claws on its second and third legs that so closely resemble a rock crab.
Pubic lice in transmitted through sexual contact and is highly likely to be caught by an
unsuspecting person. Risk for pubic lice from sexual experiences can exceed 90 percent.
Infestation of pubic lice is found in the pubic area, rectal area, and can also be found, in males, in
facial, chest, and/or abdominal hair. Head and pubic lice must be treated through the manual
removal of the louse with a comb, then pediculicides will be used. No non pesticide lotions are
currently available in the United States, but they can be purchased in the United Kingdom, and they
have the best treatment results for head lice. Treatment for lice infestations exceeds 1 billion
dollars every year. Due to the overuse of pediculicides new infestations of lice are becoming
resistant to typical treatments and new treatments are being considered and studied, such as
essential oils and suffocation

Music instruments are one of the most influential characteristics that define music culture and how
it feels. Consequently, Spanish flamenco has unique feeling for its main music instruments: cajon,

Cajon is a percussion instrument, typically a cuboid, introduced in flamenco music in 1970s (

heavily on spontaneity and improvisation resulting in an entertaining one man show ( Flamenco
Guitar ). Compared to classic guitar, the Spanish guitar is usually lighter and features smaller
dimensions, this results in sharper, and metallic timbre ( Flamenco Guitar ).

The Volkswagen Beetle
The people #8217;s car #8211; generically, Volkswagen in German #8211; is almost as old as the
automobile, and the type was familiar in Germany long before the advent of the Volkswagen.
Usually these #8220;popular #8221; cars were minimal cars, though size and simplicity did not
necessarily bring them within the reach of the ordinary man in the street. Henry Ford did build
a successful universal car, to sell at a low price, but his Model T with its 2.9 litre engine was by
no means a small car, nor was the Model A that followed it. When it was in production in the late
1920s, small #8220;proper #8221; cars in Germany ranged from the 700 cc DKW to the 1 litre

So in 1954 they got rid of the starter button and made it easier by putting it in the ignition. In
1960 500,000 beetles are shipped to the U.S. and you start to see more and more of them when
on the road. In 1970 they invent the annoying buzzer that goes off when the door is open and the
beetle is first to install it. In 1974 the first VW plant was shut down in Wolfsberg. Then in 1976
the metallic paint and sport style rims were added to make the beetle look a little better which

only remaining beetle production is in Mexico. (Beetle) Concept I was the sensation of the

the forerunner of the production model. By the next motor show, at Geneva in March 1994, the
strong public reaction had led to corporate change of mind, and chairman Ferdinand Piech
decided that it would be developed as a production model. Beetle had never been an official VW
name, but the public inevitably saw Concept I as #8220;Beetle II #8221;, and on the Volkswagen
stand at the 1996 Geneva Motor Show it was presented as #8220;the new Beetle #8221;. The aim

Future Teach Summary And Analysis
One of the tips I plan to use for myself as a future teach is To create a safe environment, show
that you are human (Koch, 2013, p 173). This is a very important tip for me to use because as a
teacher we always want to make sure that our students feel safe and that as their teacher we want
to keep them safe. The second tip I could use is Who are the student? What types of homes,
apartments, or other forms of housing arrangements do they live in (Koch,2013, p 173). This is
another important tip to up hold as a future teacher because it is important to have a relationship
with your students, but to also learn a little bit about them everyday. The third tip I could use as a
future teacher is Offer Choices and be flexible (Connell, 2013).

  • 2. Digital And Print Media s Effect On The Self Respect Of... Electronic and print media have brought about sweeping changes in human life and have had far reaching implications for all walks of life. Originating in the early 15th century, the printing press of the newspaper made the first appearance in Germany in the late 1400 s in the mode of news pamphlets or broadsides (Barber, P. 2014) [1]; and now people are easily capable of getting information through various digital devices such as sophisticated televisions and smart phones. Mass communication, however, is likely to have adverse effects on the way people, especially children and adolescents, perceive knowledge. Although mass mediacurrently provides adults and teenagers with essential opportunities to receive insight into a wide range of fields, it also raises knotty problems pertaining to their self esteem, behaviour and actions. On one hand, mass communication has a detrimental influence on the self respect of the older generation (over 65 years old). In fact, when advertisers strive for promoting their products, they do not include images of the elderly because they are often associated with ineffectiveness, unattractiveness, immobilisation and unhappiness. There are few senior citizens presented on television and almost all are male: only one in ten characters judged to be 65 or older is a woman (Delloff, M.L. 1987) [2]. Furthermore, Dail (1988) states that elderly populations suffer from negative stereotyping more than any other identifiable social group (Tupper. M) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Character Analysis Of Randle Patrick Mcmurphy Randle Patrick McMurphy is shown to be a flawed character because of his huge ego, making him a lecherous gambler high on his own arrogance, and his desire and hunger for power and control. He thinks he can win any gamble, including a gamble on his life. The stakes are that he bets the men that he can break Nurse Ratched without letting her get the best of him. Even when he enters the ward, McMurphy has that kind of swagger kind of walk and he laughs, something that has not been done by any of the patients on the ward. He is full of brass and swagger and full of assurance and arrogance with his hanging thumbs in the belt loop of his pants, his heavily scarred skin, his many tattoos, and his fresh scar on the bridge of his nose (95). After being sent to Disturbed, McMurphy was confronted with the decision to admit he was wrong and avoid electroshock therapy, to which he responded to the nurse saying, Those Chinese Commies could have learned a few things from you, lady. Due to this high arrogance in his confidence, McMurphy received electroshock therapy along with three other treatments that same very week. This all led up to the major consequence of lobotomy, in which McMurphy was essentially made a vegetable, to be nothing more than a cautionary tale on Nurse Ratched s ward. This powerful and confident character challenges the power of Ratched over the patients in the ward only to defy her law on the ward. The idea that nothing is gained by McMurphy s rebellion is ... • 4. Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone Africa in Cinema Final Paper Professor Rice May 2010 Child Soldiers in Sierra Leone This semester, the topic of Child Soldiers presented a very interesting dilemma that several countries in Africa continue to face today. Sierra Leone, in particular, has struck an interest because of the many films and readings that try to depict this story of the civil war. In class, we have viewed two films representing the problems with child soldiers in Sierra Leone which include films titled Blood Diamond and Ezra. Both films represent opposite sides of the spectrum, as Blood Diamond shows the Western view of child soldiers and Ezra represents the first African view of child soldiers. Before discussing the two films, there are also two... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their minds are controlled by the RUF and if they did not comply with the orders of the organization they were immediately killed. This type of life is so unimaginable but still continues as we speak. In Blood Diamond, the western view of this miserable story of Sierra Leone is depicted. Having viewed the film several times I now understand the real reason behind the film. Because it is in a western, Hollywood view, the film can only keep the attention of the viewers if there is some kind of white influence. With that said, even though the story of child soldiers is what is meant to be depicted, the love story between a South African Journalist and an American diamond smuggler is what is represented instead. Instead of focusing on the true matter at hand, Hollywood insists on using the talents of Leonardo Di Caprio to misrepresent the issues over diamonds in Sierra Leone. In the film, it is misleading to see how savage like the children of Sierra Leone are made out to be. The story almost seemed too good to be true in the film and to anyone who does not know much about the situation in Sierra Leone it may have been a great film. In my opinion it was a very sad excuse for a film and the film in every way used the situation in Sierra Leone as an advantage to the boost of some of Hollywood s best actors careers. The other film viewed in class entitled Ezra depicted the story of child soldiers from an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians Ideal Characteristics of Plato s Guardians The characterisitics of the ideal guardian is summarized in those words by Socrates in the second book of the Republic : [H]e who is to be a really good and noble guardian of the State will require to unite in himself philosophy and spirit and swiftness and strength. . . Swiftness and strength is deemed necessary as the guardian is to be like a well bred watchdog, who ought to be quick to see, and swift to overtake the enemy when they see him, and strong too, if when they have caught him, they have to fight with him. The requirement of spirit is then derived from this, because if he is to fight well he ought to be brave, and Socrates finds that he is not likely to be brave who has not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Heroes should not be seen lamenting or fearing death. In short, only virtues which are desirable shall be depicted in their tales, and none that are undesirable which children might imitate. The gymnastic education that Socrates prescribes is not as complicated. He rather merely says that it would be sufficient for their purposes that those being reared to be guardians maintain a healthy diet and follow a simple exercise plan from youth. What is more emphasized by Socrates is that there should be balance in the study of both gymnastics and music, and that these studies should be properly harmonized. Those who neglect gymnastics will tend be soft, but on the other hand, those who likewise neglect music will tend to savagery. As Socrates says, this ferocity only comes from spirit, which if rightly educated, would give courage, but, if too much intensified, is liable to become hard and brutal. He continues, On the other hand the philosopher will have the quality of gentleness. And this also, when too much indulged, will turn to softness, but, if educated rightly will be gentle and moderate. Thus the traits that make a good guardian are developed and nurtured through a good balance of musical and gymnastic education. That portion in the second book is where the qualities are actually first enumerated. The discussion will deviate a little in the third to the fifth books, and the subject will be brought up again in the sixth book. There Socrates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. To Sleep is to Dream I have often had dreams that were so real and vivid, that I was unable to tell if they truly happened or occurred in my dreams. Sleeping is very important to everyone. Without proper sleep, the body s immune system can begin to fail, and then one will become more susceptible to virus, illnesses, and disease. Even when we are asleep, the human mind does not completely sleep. When we are asleep, we tend to tune out environmental sounds that occur when we sleep. For example, I live near a freeway, yet the sounds of it never wake me. The auditory cortex in our brains respond to stimuli even when we are asleep. For example, I can always wake up when one of my children calls my name while I am in a deep slumber. There have been many studies and observations on individuals while they are asleep. These studies are done on individuals who have sleep disorders. There are four phases of sleep, and when one does not get the proper sleep, physical and mental issues will occur. Our bodies work in tides, and our minds and bodies fluctuate. When our bodies seem to synchronize with the 24 hour day, it is referred to as the circadian rhythm. It is the biological clock that tells us when it is day time we are awake, and night time is when we are supposed to sleep. Age and experience can affect the circadian rhythm, and I see this in myself. For instance, when I was in my teens and twenty s, I had no problem staying up all night, whether it was working a graveyard shift, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Separation Of The Churches Of Eastern Orthodox And The... What actually led to the separation of the churches of Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic? What are the many differences between these two churches? While there are very few similarities in these two churches: the Roman Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox church, there are mostly differences; however, taking a closer look at the split in 1054 will help determine this and will give insight as to just what those similarities and differences are, how they came about, and what may have caused the spilt to happen. So what actually led to the split? Between the two churches there were several disputes that had to do with theological and political differences. For example, the Investiture Conflict, a clash that started between PopeGregory VII (1073 85) and Emperor Henry IV (1084 1105) over the investment of bishops with the symbols of their office. Who held what office and ruled over whom, was the major dispute. The Roman Catholic pope claimed he held authority over all. In the year 1054 everything was split from the stand points of theological and hierarchical structures and it has not been the same since. To begin, when it came to the theological similarities and differences there were definitely more differences. First, the only similarity was the leadership that each one had. They had disputes over everything else. Second, the church and the leaders in the Eastern Orthodox Church believed that all popes were equal and there was no real focus or ... • 11. Analysis Of Poem Facing It By Yusef Komunyakaa War is one of the most controversial topics in today s society. However, because poetry tends to focus on the experiences of the author, it is quite widespread. Grief, fear, and pain are some of the most prevalent emotions in literature. In his poem, Facing It, Yusef Komunyakaa tells his experience with war and how it has affected him. The poem begins with the author experiencing a loss of identity as he is at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial . Then, he experiences nostalgia whilst reminiscing his past. Major General Petraeus s Reconstruction Efforts A Reconstruction Effort While under Major General David Petraeus, the 101st Airborne Division initially deployed, ready to engage insurgent forces. However, after arriving in Mosul, Iraq the division became heavily involved in a vital reconstruction effort. General Petraeus understood through his previous experiences that in war, reconstruction efforts are inevitable. His critical thinking and problem solving led to a three pronged strategy to provide a secure environment, to restore basic life services and to facilitate a return to normalcy for the citizens of Mosul. Battle Of San Jacinto Case Study Strategic Setting Depending on the perspective, the strategic factors of the Battle of San Jacinto were either to re align Texas with the Mexican government, as it had pulled away in rebellion due to Anglo interference from the U.S. (Pedro, 1921). A second perspective of the strategic factor of the Battle of San Jacinto had to do with Texans, in particular Anglo Texans from the Southern U.S., wanting to extend the influence of slavery over the region, intentionally flaunting and ignoring Mexicos anti slavery polices (Tindall and Shi, 2013). A third perspective, offered by Anderson and Wooster (2016) is that strategically the Battle of San Jacinto was the result of tyrannical oversight and behaviors by Santa Anna and the Mexican government over Texas. There have been waves surfed that were created by the breaking of an arctic glacier. China has built an indoor wave pool a thousand miles from the closest ocean that perfectly simulates a real breaking wave. People are finding ways to surf by any means necessary. Anyone that has ever picked up a board and paddled into a break owes that experience not only to the ancient pioneers that created the sport but also to the pioneers that popularized it. The origins of catching and riding a wave began in Western Polynesia over three thousand years ago. The first ones to catch a wave were fishermen who discovered riding waves was an efficient method of getting to shore with their bounty. Eventually, catching waves transformed into a pastime instead of every day work. There is no exact record of when surfing took the upright sport that we know today. It is known that, during the 15th century, the people of the Sandwich Isles were entrenched in the pastime of he enalu or wave sliding, in old Hawaiian. Europeans first witnessed surfing in the late 1700 s when first contact was made with the Tahitians. Total ALP is not a marker until remodeling has gone far astray in several bones that are grossly misshapen. Per Magnusson, Michael Davie and Christopher Sharp compared total ALP and three isoforms of ALP (B/I, B1, B2) of 37 patients with various stages of PDB and a control group of 66 healthy patients. Due to this defect would you expect the blood to move from left to right ventricle or right to left ventricle during systole? Explain your answer based on blood pressure and resistance in the heart and great vessels. It goes left to right during systole. The difference is normally, oxygen poor (blue) blood returns to the right atrium from the body, travels to the right ventricle, and then is pumped into the lungs where it receives oxygen. Oxygen rich (red) blood returns to the left atrium from the lungs, passes into the left ventricle, and then is pumped out to the body through the aorta. This means that the porters five forces model can be a powerful tool (E. Dobbs, 2014). The first of the forces is competition in the motor industry. There is a high level of competition within the motor industry as the companies have a high level of competition between themselves especially when it comes to marketing and innovation this is seen on a daily basis with the sometimes odd tv adverts used by car companies in order to differentiate themselves. The industry has many firms in it that have chosen to specialse across all areads such as cost, fuel efficient, brand image and style. However the Auto industry is segmented as it ranges from high cost and very specialist companies all the way down to low cost mass production companies. This can be seen as you wouldn t say that Ferrari is competiting with KIA. However there is a high level of competition between firms. The next of porters five forces is the bargaining power of buyer which in this case is customers. The customers of the Auto Industry are what provides the revenue for all of the incumbents in the market. The result of this is that there are low switching costs in the market place this means that customers would be able to switch between competing firms for no extra cost. • 33. Juvenile Delinquency Is Not Acceptable Juvenile delinquency is when minors commit criminal acts or offenses that are against the law and in which adult prosecution is not acceptable. It is interesting to note that this was not always the case. Before juvenile delinquency was established, juveniles were trialed and treated as adults. There was no such thing as a juvenile court, juvenile correctional facilities, or juvenile support groups, when the juvenile deviated. Later, many believed that when juveniles deviated that it meant that they needed guidance and support to help them. This change was made mainly because the value of children increased due to the fact that children were beginning to live longer and were healthier. Throughout the semester it has been intriguing to learn more about this topic and learn different theories related to it, as well as delinquency triggers. There are four theories that relate to juvenile delinquency. Strain Theory is when the juvenile experiences strain, or stress, which as a result causes them to commit delinquent acts. Strain can be caused by the juvenile failing to achieve goals, and/or the loss of positive stimuli or the presentation of negative stimuli. Social Learning Theory is when juveniles learn to engage in delinquent acts by being reinforced, positively or negatively, in some way. Control Theory is when the juvenile varies with the levels of control, which causes them to commit delinquent acts. Labeling Theory is when juveniles are labeled as bad or delinquent , ... In the human body, all of the body s weight is supported by the femurs which are located in the human thigh. The femur is classified as a long bone and extends from the hip down to the knee. The head of the femur articulates with the pelvis to form the hip joint. The neck is a narrow connection between the head of the femur and the diaphysis of it. The diaphysis is the shaft of the bone and the facet is the small smooth articular surface at the end of the femur. However the equation of boot camp term and the jail term substituted usually varies with the boot camp facility and the state. In case juvenile offenders are not wiling to serve in boot camps, then they are compelled to serve their jail term. Therefore participation in boot camps is not compulsory and individuals can prefer to serve their original jail term instead. (Cowles, 2005) The first boot camp was opened in the United States in Georgia and Oklahoma around 1983. The initial set of the boot camps was to maximize the rate of deterrence, reduce the crowding in juvenile prison, to decrease the cost of penal and the correction system, and in order to reduce the rate of recidivism. Boot camps were however supposed to find a middle ground between restrictive prison system and the less strict probation. Boot camps are therefore less restrictive than the system in prisons and harsher than the system in probation.
