Essay on Forced Labor in King Leopold’s Ghost
Forced Labor in King Leopold s Ghost In King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild, forced
labor seems to be a recurring theme throughout the book. Forced labor would be non existence or
be very minimal if it wasn t for colonialism. Google defines colonialism as an exploitation by a
stronger country of weaker one; the use of the weaker country s resources to strengthen and
enrich the stronger country. King s Leopold s Ghost, Belgium is known as the stronger country in
search of a colony (Congo) for its own exploitation. Professor Landstreet defines forced labor as
the most extreme form of slavery, work that people are compelled to do against their will and
subjected to physical punishment if they don t perform their work. In the following... Show more

The entire system was militarized and Force Publique personals were dispersed around Congo
to enforce their power and will. AWS defines social structure as patters of social relationships
that are relatively stable. These relationships may be among roles, groups, within a society. The
relationships are guided by norms, and by shared meanings held by the people participating in
the relationships. Force Publique existed in Congo until Congo got its independence from
Belgium in 1960. It was a stable organization that created fear to the Congo by murder,
mutilation, and hostage taking to force labor. The main purpose of the Force Publique was to
enforce the rubber quotas and force labor. Equipped with a chicotte, a whip made of
hippopotamus hide, the Force Publique were able to take and mistreat hostages. FQ were able to
hold women s hostage, which forced their husbands to gather wild rubber in the jungle and to meet
strict rubber quotas. Communities that were uncooperative with the orders of the FQ often saw
their villages burnt to the ground and soldiers took human hands as trophies, but more importantly
installed fear in the minds of the natives. Force Publique had no remorse for the atrocities they
have caused because to them it was normal, and norm of the job. They were handed money to
keep quiet about the crimes committed in the Congo and also got a cut of the rubber revenue.
Therefore it was ok in their minds to abuse

Simulation In Health Care
What is simulation? Well it is the imitation of the operation of a real world process or system over
time. (Google) I think that the use of simulation in health care provides an ideal environmental
experience and burst of reality for students. The use of simulation in health care helps decrease risks
of any kind while increasing the safety throughout health care. I feel that simulations have definitely
provided us with an alternate route for health care, allowing not only students but also healthcare
workers to indulge in real life situations. This provides the learning need to understand important
techniques and treatments instead of having to just witness. Simulationis significantly utilized in the
health care environment. When I was

Conducting A Norm Experiment
In today s society, norms are expected by everyone. According to the book Essentials of
Sociology a Down To Earth Approach, Hansen states that norms are expectations of right behavior
(Hansen, 2014). There are also two forms of norms that may be strictly enforced or not. There is
folkways and mores. Folkwaysare norms that aren t strictly enforced while mores are strictly
enforced for essential thought to care values or the well being of a group (Hansen, 2014). Along
with a norm and the two types, there may also be reactions to it. These reactions may be positive
or negative and termed as sanctions. Sanctions are either expressions of an approval given to
people for upholding norms or expression of disapproval for violating them (Hansen, 2014). In
conducting a norm experiment, the terms were put to a test. The experiment consisted of an
observed norm violation and an individual norm violation. The experiments resulted in what I had
hypothesized. My hypothesisconsisted of sanctions of the norms that were conducted.
In the observe norm violation experiment, it was concluded to result in negative sanction. The
experiment consisted of a friend of mine and I ordering our lunch at In n Out. It was my friend,
Denise s turn to order her meal. Denise ordered a double double with no cheese, no thousand island
spread, a single patty and only onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. The employee looked at her in a
dumbfound manner and confirmed her ordered as a hamburger. Denise was not

Human Weakness in Macbeth and Othello
Macbeth is one of the best known plays written by Shakespeare in the 17th century, Jacobean
period. It was the period where the belief in supernatural was greatly held and king James I
himself, the author of Divine rights of king adhered in witchcraft and openly practiced the idea of
kings being God s representatives on earth, so to even complain about them was a sin. The tragic
hero, brave and valiant Macbethhad all the required characteristics of the ideal Scottish soldier;
valorous and gallant but he is bound to have a tragic flaw which he is powerless over and the cause
of his inevitable death, his vaulting ambition and greed. We then have our other tragedy Othello,
which is unique in the literature of time because he was the first... Show more content on

In Macbeth, Duncan and the soldiers call him valiant and brave , Othello is also referred to as
valiant and brave by the duke and Montana. Moreover, as we see Macbeth leading the big battle,
Othello is reserved by the leaders of Venice who depend on him to fight the biggest battle. He is
employed to do so which means he is chosen and his skills and qualities are valued therefore the
verb employed is used to convey his importance in the society to the audience. Initially, Shakespeare
presents the protagonists as impeccable heroes and suggests to the audience nothing can go wrong
in the play.
In comparison, Shakespeare uses a significant quote which foreshadows Othello s tragic fall
later in the play. When Barbantio warns Othello she has deceived her father and may thee it
shows the audience how hurt he is by her deception and warns Othello that if Desdemona can
betray her father, whom she has known all her life she can easily betray Othello, This strong
point foreshadows Othello s murderous suspicion. Shakespeare also used the character of Iago to
not only show how trusting Othello is but also how poor of a judgement he makes. The repetition
of honest Iago by Othello warns the audience how Othello s poor judgements will lead him to his
downfall as they first see Iago slandering against Othello, so they are warned he is duplicitous
beforehand. Another way Shakespeare presents Othello s tragic fall

Song of Solomon
Toni Morrison s award winning novel Song of Solomon is full of very interesting, deep
symbolism. Macon Dead III, nicknamed Milkman, is a very symbolic character throughout the
novel. His character is not only symbolic, for so is his name. Also, Milkman s paternal aunt, Pilate,
has an extremely significannot and symbolic role in the novel. To her father, she represents the child
who killed her own mother and took away her father s wife. Seeing that Pontius Pilatesentenced
Jesusto death, the name Pilate seems to coincide with her father, Macon Dead s, opinion.
Ironically, though, Pilate is a good person and is murdered in the end, just as Jesus was by Pontius
Pilate. Another important character in the novel who portrays a great deal of... Show more content

The fact that she depends so heavily upon her son reveals the numerous insecurities she has about
herself. It is the character and the name of Milkman Dead that enlighten readers of these highly
significannot facts and symbols throughout the novel.
br
br Though Milkman is a very symbolic character in Song of Solomon, he is not the only one.
Pilate also has both a very symbolic character and name. First of all, her name is derived from
the biblical name of Pontius Pilate, the man who sentenced Jesus to death on the cross. This name
is very symbolic of her father s feelings toward her. Although her father does not purposely choose
her name, considering he can t read, it quickly comes to signify the fact that her father feels that
Pilate killed her mother, seeing as that her mother died during childbirth. Ironically, however,
Pilate is murdered at the end of the book when she and Milkman go to give her father a proper
burial.
br
br Pilate also represents a great deal more than a murderer. She has a large part of her mother s
spirit in her because although, physically, her mother dies while giving birth to her, part of her
soul enters Pilate, so part of her literally lives in her daughter. Therefore, when Pilate is killed
during the burial of her father, it shows that both she and her mother are tired of life, they have
both lived it to the fullest, and they both want to rest in peace with Pilate s father.

Bravery Bravery is the theme that indicated in the texts The Maze Runner, Tomorrow When The
War Began, World War Z, The Hunger Games. These four texts has shown that sometimes it s a
risk to your own life to be brave. In the book The Maze Runner written by James Dashner,
Thomas woke up and finds himself amidst a group of men in large open spaces surrounded by
huge concrete walls that will lead him to the maze. It opens every morning and closes when the
sun sets. Later in the book, Minho and Alby (the two runners) went into the maze they didn t
return on time as usual. People were waiting for them at the gate including Thomas. At the last
second they finally came out, however Alby was injured and the gate was about to close. Thomas
thought he had no choice but to sacrifice himself for Alby. Thomas knew he had no choice. He

Hydrogen Extraction Process For The Recovery Of Heavy Oil...
Abstract
Vapor extraction process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen was originally proposed by
Dr. Butler during 1989 1991. Since its evolution, vapor extraction has emerged as a very
effective and promising technique mainly due to its environment friendly nature and cost
effectiveness as compared to other recovery techniques. Vapex is basically an in situ recovery
process which injects a vaporized hydrocarbon solvent in the injection well to reduce the
viscosity the heavy oil and bitumen and allows it to drain out of the production well through
gravity drainage. Mass transfer of vaporized solvent to heavy oil and the gravity drainage are the
key parameters which mainly determine the production rate of heavy oil and bitumen with reduced
viscosity. This report provides a brief idea about the current heavy oil and bitumen deposits in
Canada, a better insight of the Vapex process and the factors which affect the efficiency of the
process. Several factors that scale up the performance of the process and important limitations are
also indentified that need further research for future growth of the process.
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
Energy is the most important factor for growth and development. Petroleum being the primary
source of energy can be categorized into conventional and non conventional forms based on the
viscosity and API gravity. Heavy oil and Bitumen are the non conventional forms of energy which
are often referred as oil sands or tar sands having high

Eminent Domain Case Analysis
This seems to be the fundamental issue underlying the paper: a pernicious sense of what is
valuable. Multiple times, the paper asserts that the be all, end all metric of value ought to be
economic value, specifically the value derived from synergistic arrangements of real property. But
viewing a situation through this lens dehumanizes the situation. It leads to situations where we can,
with a straight face, describe human settlement as clutter to be disposed of. Indeed, alternative
metrics of value exist which add nuance to the situation. Sentimental or cultural value, for
example, may be entirely at odds with economic value. Were a city to grow and encompass sacred
Native American land, would it not be fair to consider such interests alongside those of the capital
class? What about a family with ancestors... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the crucial assumptions underlying the paper s analysis is that a redevelopment effort will
necessarily create positive economic value. But what if it does not? Kelo serves as a perfect
example. What was supposed to be a profitable facility is currently an empty lot collecting storm
debris. At least with eminent domain, voters have some form of cathartic recourse. They can vote
out the individuals who made the decision to condemn their homes for an ultimately disastrous
product. In a callable fee or floating fee situation, voters have little ability to seek redress, instead
nurturing feelings of political disenfranchisement and anti establishment resentment. Further, the
threat of losing their seats incentivizes politicians to carefully examine any proposed development
and only exercise their power when reasonably sure of its success, minimizing potential mishaps.
Thus, voters are both empowered and incentives are put in place to encourage careful decision
making concerning development

Princess Diana As A Hero
Princess Diana is considered to be the most favored member of the Royal Family in the history
of the British Monarchy (biography.com editors 1). She is the former wife of Prince Charles, and
the mother of Princes William and Harry. Her charitable work with impoverished children has
formed her reputation as a role model for the people of Britain and much of the world. Much of
Dianas life has been devoted to traveling the world to help others. Her work in Africa with the
children injured by landmines brought her into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). Princess Diana
was more than just a public figure and royal, she was a loving person who brought light to social
issues and cared for those who are destitute. A hero, as defined in Webster s Online Dictionary, is
a person who a person admired for achievements or noble qualities or one who shows great
courage. However, a hero is not just a person with outstanding achievements. A hero is a person
who is philanthropic, generous, and kind. Heros fight for those who cannot fight for themselves,
and do not judge those who they are fighting for. They are charitable in ways other than donating
money, they give their time and effort in order to make the lives of others more pleasant. Heros
display bravery, as they are willing to go into a dangerous situation to help others that have been
aggrieved. Social pressures and judgements do not affect a hero s willingness to help others, and
they are willing to push through what others say

Importance Of Justification Of Staff Meeting
For setting up a staff meeting at the third location I would email all staff about the mandatory
meeting that will be held at a specific time and date and let them know which room the meeting
will be held in. Upon meeting time, I would explain to the staff that there have been complaints
both internally and externally about appropriate work dress attire. I would let everyone know
that there will be a new policy enforced, it will mandate that all staff members wear scrubs and
solid colored white or black tennis shoes. The company will supply every staff member with one
set of scrubs while other sets are at the expense of the employee. The new dress code is enforced
as of this meetingand all staff members will be held accountable from here on.
The next item on the agenda for the meeting is cleanliness of the office building. I would let all
employees recognize that in the employee handbook it states that staff members will help daily to
keep the bathrooms, waiting rooms and all areas throughout the establishment clean. Also, I would

The Occupy Wall Street Movement that began in New York Sept. 17 and has since spread like

Its obvious what we re about, responds Nathan Ness of St Paul, an OCW activist who has
participated in Occupy Movement actions in Minneapolis, Duluth and California. The Occupy Wall
Street Movement is a movement protesting corporate greed. Corporate greed has many tentacles
that people in the Occupy movement are focusing on. However, most of us agree that human
beings, not corporations, should have the rights of personhood.
Dave Bicking of Minneapolis, a former Green Party candidate for Minneapolis City Council,

The system is completely rigged against us.
There is a diversity of ideas in the Occupy Wall Street Movement concerning how, exactly, to deal
with the corporate take over of our democracy. We don t always agree on every issue. But, the
Occupy Wall Street Movement is about changing the fundamental way our system operates. We all
seem to agree on that.

Who Is Montag A Hero In Fahrenheit 451
There are 129, 864, 880 books in the world. Now imagine if there were zero. In Ray Bradbury s
Fahrenheit 451, this is precisely the goal of firemen and the majority of society. Guy Montag has
been a fireman for ten years, and he has always gotten a certain thrill from starting fires to burn
houses containing books to the ground. Then Clarisse McClellan comes along and changes his
perspective on everything. She says that firemen did not always use to start fires; they used to put
them out, and people were not afraid. I like to smell things and look at things, and sometimes stay
up all night, walking, and watch the sun rise (Bradbury 7). Clarisse questions his happiness, and

When Montag reveals his secret stash of books in the attic, she nearly faints and tells him that he
must burn them in the incinerator immediately. Throughout the novel, Montag struggles with
individuality and making a difference despite dealing with his mind blocked co workers who
quickly target him as the outsider and turn the Mechanical Hound loose on him. There must be
something in books, things we can t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there
must be something there. You don t stay for nothing (Bradbury 51). He develops a plan with
Faber, a man who remembers what the world was like before firemen began burning books. This
plan just might be the key to regaining the people s rights and restoring books to their rightful
place in society. Firemen eliminated the people s ability to express one s own opinion when they
eradicated books and free knowledge from the world. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury explores this

Assess the Sociological Explanations of the Relationship...
Assess the sociological explanations of the relationship between globalisation and religion. 33
marks Secularisation theory has argued that modernisation has undermined religion. The
importance of science and technology on economic development and rational worldview on which
they depend on are seen as destroying the belief in supernatural. However religion can contribute
to development, but most recently sociologists have examined what role religion may play in
development in today s globalising world. This can be seen in India. Globalisation has brought
rapid economic growth and has seen India become a more important player in the world political
stage. It has brought prosperity to some, notably the Indian middle class. Nanda shows... Show

Nanda notes that the Indians success in the global market have attributed to Hindu values.
These are constantly promoted by media and politicians. Ultra nationalism, worshiping Hindu
gods and India itself has become a civil religion. In recent years the East Asia tiger economies
such as Korea and Singapore are now becoming industrialised. Also China has become a major
global power. Sociologists argue that this success is because of religion acting similar to
Calvinism. Redding sees their post Confucian values as encouraging, similar to the protestant
work ethic. Similarly Berger argues that Pentecostalism in Latin America acts as a functional
equivalent to Weber s protestant ethic. He says that they embrace the work ethic and lifestyle of
Calvinists aspect of life which in result its members continue to prosper. However Berger
underlines Weber s point that religious ideas alone are not enough to produce economic
development. He says that natural resources are also needed. For example while Protestantism has
grown in northern Brazil, the religion lacks resources and remains backwards. By contrast, the
south, which is developing rapidly, has both a work ethic derived from Pentecostalism and the
necessary resources. Christianity has also become globalised. Lehmann says that it has done this
by accompanying globalisations, imposed my indigenous population and in the past 100 years it
has spread because of its popular following. The symbols and

Fair-Value Accounting and the Financial Crisis Essay
Market crashes are nearly as old as the invention of money itself. But, as Gillian Tett underlines
in Fool s Gold, the latest financial crisis stands out due to its sheer size . Economists estimate
total losses could sum up to $2000 to $4000 billion, a number surprisingly not dissimilar to the
British Gross Domestic Product. In its post mortem, the self inflicted disaster has commonly
brought to light the question: Did bankers, regulators and rating agencies fail to see the flaws, or
did they fail to care? Importantly, it has also created a hunt for scapegoats and quick fixes.
Many Republicans and industry lobbyists have insisted that the financial meltdown would not have

However, during the financial crisis, the application of the accounting standards was very different,
and did not demand pure FVA.
Firstly, the write downs were not as apparent as they seemed. Due to the mixed attribute model,
firms were allowed to choose the measurement attribute they desired for a position through how
they classified the position. During the crisis, banks did indeed utilize these safeguards and
discretion built into FVA on their mortgage based securities. This resulted in the re classification of
many fair value assets into other categories in which weaker impairment standards were applied.
Hence, most bank financial assets were valued at amortized historic costs on their balance sheets.
With only trading type operations reported under fair value principles . This implies that FVA
standards would have made little difference in a bank s balance sheets and regulatory capital ratios.
For the same reason, written down values were also barely understatements. If anything, they were
in fact overstatements as banks had the individual discretion in determining fair value. Lastly, FVA
standards also allowed the use of valuation models in the calculation of fair values when markets
become inactive, and stated that market prices from forced sales should not be used. Hence FVA
should have mitigated contagion effects, and actually protected institutions against negative spill
overs from distressed banks respectively. In a

Becoming A Veterinarian Research Paper
It is no secret that social media is seen as an outlet, where we can post our innermost thoughts and
feelings, no matter how awful they are, and many times, without any consequence. The anonymity
of social media bolsters some people to post rants, hate speech, and other offensive comments that
they would almost certainly never say face to face. There have been multiple occasions throughout
my life where I have witnessed people expressing such feelings on social media. However, there

Therefore, it is my ultimate dream to become a veterinarian. This career often sees many
different types of situations. Sometimes, it may be blissful and enjoyable, like when you save an
abused dog from potentially dying. Other times it can be heartbreaking and unpleasant. There is
no simple rule for when to express feelings. Instead, we must exercise judgment. We have an
ethical obligation to make thoughtful choices about whether, when, and how to express our
emotions. At times, being a veterinarian, I may want to grieve with a family over the loss of
their pet or even anger if I am unable to help an animal in need. However, displaying such
emotions would be extremely inappropriate and unprofessional while simultaneously violating
professional norms. Instead of revealing the emotions described above, a veterinarian should
exhibit strength and courage. They should be able to remain positive during even the bleakest
times. For example, if I were to discover that one of my client s pets had an incurable type of
cancer and would require euthanasia, I would want to remain optimistic, while providing
comfort to the family and the pet during such a hard time. If the family senses my sadness or
anger, they are more inclined to feel the same way as me. With that being said, if I present a
positive, relaxed mood, the family would be more slanted towards those feelings. Although I
would be saddened by an event such as this, it would be quite unprofessional for me to do break
into tears, despite my sadness. Everyone will have to deal with negative emotions during their
career, at some point or another, and learning how to cope with these feelings and which are
appropriate to express is crucial to our

age discrimination Essay
Age Discrimination
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) protects individuals who are 40
years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age. The ADEA s protections apply
to both employees and job applicants. Under the ADEA, it is unlawful to discriminate against a
person because of his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment,
including hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments, and training.
It is also unlawful to retaliate against an individual for opposing employment practices that
discriminate based on age or for filing an age discrimination charge, testifying, or participating in
any way in an investigation, proceeding, or litigation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
В· Pre Employment Inquiries
The ADEA does not specifically prohibit an employer from asking an applicant s age or date of
birth. However, because such inquiries may deter older workers from applying for employment or
may otherwise indicate possible intent to discriminate based on age, requests for age information
will be closely scrutinized to make sure that the inquiry was made for a lawful purpose, rather than
for a purpose prohibited by the ADEA.
В· Benefits
The Older Workers Benefit Protection Act of 1990 (OWBPA) amended the ADEA to
specifically prohibit employers from denying benefits to older employees. Congress recognized
that the cost of providing certain benefits to older workers is greater than the cost of providing
those same benefits to younger workers, and that those greater costs would create a disincentive
to hire older workers. Therefore, in limited circumstances, an employer may be permitted to
reduce benefits based on age, as long as the cost of providing the reduced benefits to older workers
is the same as the cost of providing benefits to younger workers.
В· Waivers of ADEA Rights
An employer may ask an employee to waive his/her rights or claims under the ADEA either in the

Maryland Police Department Essay
Maryland one of greatest states on the eastern coast of the United States is currently
experiencing a high demand for police officers. This is especially true in Baltimore one of the
largest cities in the state of Maryland and continues to grow. Police officers and law enforcement
professionals have to be thoroughly equipped to handle the stress of law enforcement work on a
day to day basis. As a result, the state of Maryland has put into place high standards for those
interested in working in law enforcement.
Like other states, Maryland requires that those interested in working in law enforcement go
through a state accredited police academy. However, unlike other states, applicants are not
required to go through an agency first before enrolling in a police academy. The state of Maryland
does have what can be referred to as a commission that oversees and enacts standards that applicants
must meet before becoming police officers.
Some basic requirements that applicants must possess are, they must be at least 21 years of age or
older, they must be a U.S. citizen, and they must have a high school diploma or the equivalent of a
high school diploma. Candidates are also required to take certain exams beginning with a written
exam that assesses verbal skills, reading, reporting and writing skills. These exams are similar to

Hair comparisons can not identify a hair as coming from one individual to the exclusion of
anyone else. DNA testing can strengthen any possible association of the hairs. quot; Locard.
Hair is usually found in unusual amounts when there was a struggle or fight between the victim
and suspect or suspects. Hair at a crime scene is usually found on the floor near whatever was
used to commit the crime or the point of impact between the suspect and victim. If a hair is
found with the root still intact then DNA can be pulled from it although DNA can also be found
from fingernails, toenails, and skin flakes. Hair can tell the investigators many things. For

and if it simply fell out or alot of force was used to pull it out of the scalp. Fibers are found
mostly on clothing, furniture, carpeting, and blankets at a crime scene. The fibers found are
usually from either clothing or carpet. Cross transfer of fiber evidence usually occurs where
person to person contact was established. There are well over a thousand known fibers and a few
thousand known dye formulas. Every dye formula is registered and available in the database

Financial Ratios and Profit Analysis Methods
1.Suggest the financial ratio that most financial analysts would use to evaluate the financial
condition of the company. Provide support for your rationale. One ratio that is easy to fixate on is
the PEG ratio, or profit earnings/growth ratio. Per Yahoo Finance, that metric currently sits at 1.51
for the next five years expected and anything between 1 and 2 is generally considered to be decent
to good depending on the industry. The rationale behind this ratio being chosen is that a firm must
be growing and expanding to be viable long term. Just showing a profit is not good enough because
a firm can be retracting yet showing a profit at the same time. For example, if a retail outlet is
closing stores, that does not mean they would post a loss but it s far from good if the number of
open stores is going down because that would almost certainly mean that revenue is also going
down unless the firm is expanding greatly its online offerings. One of the few examples where such
a shift would be expected and normal given the current economic climate would be firms like
BlockBuster who are clearly shifting from brick and mortar stores to online stores and/or digital
offerings in general. HYPERLINK http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=HMA+Key+Statistics http:/

Social Media Negative Essay
How much time do people spend on a cell phone or computer daily? What percentage of that time
is consumed doing things other than scrolling through Instagram, twitter, and Facebook feeds or
snap chatting peers? Seventy three percent of wired teens use social media websites (PEW
research center). We live in a society where social media dominates a vast majority of our life.
Individuals of the 21st century are deemed as good or bad friends based on liking a peers photo.
Social media provides individuals with instant gratification as they see the innumerable amount of
likes piling up on their home screens instantly after posting pictures. Vanessa Lapointe, through a
relatable series of emotional developments, targets teens and families caught up in social media to
inform them about the dangers of tech based social apps and the vitality of monitoring what we
say, do, and like. Our actions, although they may seem immensely minuscule, have large
implications. Lapointe, therefore, effectively uses pathos to target parents who are concerned
about the effects of social media on their children s futures. Lapointe utilizes pathos, a type of
emotional appeal, as she presents an analogy between addiction and health to social media dangers
in order to effectively grab the attention of parents. Lapointe argues, we can t get enough of it
because it gives us these instant hits of that social connectivity that we quite literally need. The
problem is that it will never fully satiate our

Under the leadership of Lee Iacocca and with the support of federal loan guarantees, Chrysler
managed to turn itself around one more time, returning to profitability in 1982. While the late
1980s proved tough for the industry as a whole, the introduction and meteoric rise of the family
minivan (a market controlled 47% by Chrysler as of 1996), coupled with the 1987 acquisition
and subsequent exploitation of the Jeep brand name, left Chrysler the envy of the U.S. auto
market by the mid 1990s. As Fortune magazine stated in late 1996, If a vehicle is in demand and
generates high profit margins, you can bet Chrysler s making it. 4 While Chrysler s success and
relatively conservative management style attracted praise from industry observers, it also
attracted the attention of Las Vegas billionaire Kirk Kerkorian, who with the help of retired Lee
Iacocca, mounted a hostile bid for Chrysler in 1995. The (U.S. dollar) $55 per share ($27.50

Ambition By Gary Soto Summary
Gary Soto, who among many things was a Mexican American poet, many times wrote about
what he knew best: his life. Growing up as a Chicano in America in the 50s and 60s, Soto
worked in fields as a laborer from a young age. It is evident that coming from a Hispanic working
class family greatly influenced his poem Ambition . As he is known for, Soto s poem is filled
with imagery of everyday life, while harping on important details and themes of things that he
may have seen around him., but in this instance, there was a bit of confusion. To begin with, the
poem Ambition starts off with the line For years our ambition was to eat/Chicken (1 2). Without
further analysis, at this point the reader is most likely confused, much like I was. Chicken? How
could eating be one s goal, one s aspiration in life? The word ambition is usually associated with
lofty goals. It would not seem out of place to say that one s ambition was to become a doctor or
to make a better life for oneself. So the speaker in the poem could not truly believe that all that he
wanted in life was to eat chicken. The outlandishness of this statement seems to be the speaker
pointing huge arrows towards places in the poem that invoke deeper meaning to... Show more

this story are the cats, the speaker seems to be saying that, as I paraphrased in my pre write, that
although seemingly shallow, the love of something superficial like food or chicken was validated
because it was still love. Although superficial, the love of food translates to a love of a nessesity

Impact of Media on the People of Pakistan
In the late 20th Century, mass media could be classified into eight mass media industries: books,
newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio, movies, television and the internet. With the explosion
of digital communication technology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the question of what
forms of media should be classified as mass mediahas become more prominent. For example, it is
controversial whether to include cell phones, video games and computer games (such as
MMORPGs) in the definition. In the 2000s, a classification called the seven mass mediabecame
popular. In order of introduction, they are:
1.Print (books, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, etc.) from the late 15th century

This transmittion of mass advertising to millions of people is a form of mass communication.
Video games may also be evolving into a mass medium. Video games convey the same messages
and ideologies to all their users users. Users sometimes share the experience with each other by
playing online. Excluding the internet however, it is questionable whether players of video
games are sharing a common experience when they play the game separately. It is possible to
discuss in great detail the events of a video game with a friend you have never played with because
the experience was identical to you both. The question is if this is then a form of mass
communication.
MMORPGS such as Runescape provide a common gaming experience to millions of users
throughout the globe. It is arguable that the users are receiving the same message, i.e., the game is
mass communicating the same messages to the various players.
A life without the presence of mass media would seem improbable for many! Let s read about the
pros and cons of mass media and its effect on a larger scale.
Mass media enjoys a very prominent role in our lives. There are various effects of mass media on
the society at large. Media tends to influence and it s obvious, there are positive as well as
negative influences of mass media. However, it also depends upon the way audiences perceive
things. The power of the mass media is by far recognized by everybody in terms of advertising,

Before installing the VPN services, however, a number of things must be taken into
consideration. By evaluating who is using the VPN, the hardware necessary to make good
connections, the pros and cons of differing connection protocols, and evaluating past security
problems, setting up the VPN services becomes a much smoother process. VPN s and Firewalls
Anyone who will be accessing the VPN services should have a firewall in place.Once a VPN
connection is established, the client is essentially able to access information behind the
company s firewall, thus creating an access hole. Therefore, insisting a client use and maintain a
firewall is another layer in the security of the VPN setup. The ease of changing the firewall rules
to allow VPN connections should be addressed. Very old firewalls, either appliance types or
software types, may be difficult or impossible to configure to allow VPN access.A small business
may stay with an old firewall for many reasons, one of which might be the fact that there has been
no reason to upgrade in the past. It would be prudent to check the firewall documentation before
becoming enmeshed in the VPN process, only to have it fail for lack of access, or creating a setup
that might be considered insecure. User Considerations When setting up the VPN server(s) at the
main office, who is using the connection and how much access to the internal network,

Solid Wood Hardwood Wood Flooring
Solid wood flooring will last more than 100 years, and the finish can be easily renewed when
needed. Just having wood floors increases the value of your home.
Not too long ago, the only choice you had was the old fashioned solid wood tongue and groove
strips in maple or oak. Today, wood flooring can be planks from old barns, exotic woods, pre
finished engineered wood strips which eliminate the dust and disruption of finishing on site. You
even can have wood laminate flooring, which isn t wood, but looks like wood at a much lower cost.
SOLID WOOD FLOORING Solid wood floors, although beautiful, can t be used everywhere.
They must be nailed to a sub floor. This makes solid wood unsuitable for use directly over concrete.
Adding a sub floor between the concrete and the wood flooring might result in a height problem
where the floor meets an adjoining room. Moisture causes wood to expand, so it s not appropriate
in basements. Humidity can lead to squeaking and buckling.
The trend seems to be for homeowners to buy wood flooring with a factory applied finish. This
eliminates dust from sanding, fumes from finishing, and waiting before the floor can be walked on.
Another benefit is that the factory finishes are usually much tougher than the polyurethane applied
in the field.
The downside of pre finishing is that since that floor doesn t get sanded after it s installed, there
are slight bumps and dips where the sub floor isn t perfectly level, and where the flooring strips

Why Is Vegetarianism Wrong
Vegetarianism: Because Killing Plants is OK How could a seven year old possibly make a
difference? How could a seven year old possibly make a decision for herself? How could a seven
year old survive without enough protein? These were a few of many ignorant questions that
bombarded the ears of my proud parents. Throughout my young life, I always had a deep
appreciation and passion for living creatures. So much so, that ants, crawling along the sidewalk
would captivate my attention; snakes, slithering through the sludgy, green creek water would
fascinate me. Due to my intense love of animals, the thought of harming them deeply saddened
me. At the young age of seven years old, I became a self proclaimed tree hugger, peace lover and
no meateater whom by the way, did receive enough protein. As a young child, I became a
vegetarian due to one single, overwhelming reason: animals and I are the same. We breathe the
same air, we walk among the same ground, we have complex and very real feelings and we have
families. I realized this whilst spending an afternoon in my favorite creek spot in my hometown. I

being a vegetarian is much more than what I eat, or rather, don t eat. It is what I believe in. I
believe that animals are similar to humans in such a tremendous way, that harming an animal is
equivalent to the harm of a human. This belief, engraved in my core, leads my way as a religion

Violence in Boxing and Similar Sports
In 1962, Norman Cousins wrote an essay about the dangers that came with sport of boxing
called Who Killed Benny Paret? . His essay focused on a match that resulted in the death of a
boxer named Benny Paret. The Investigations on Paret s death reflected on many aspects, such as
the role of the referee who did not act in time to stop the fight, the doctor s examinations if he
was really fit, the opponent who did not stop when Paret did not respond to his punches, and
Paret s manager and boxing authorities who were criticized because they gave Paret clearance to
fight even though they knew that he had two previous fights in less than six months. Cousins on
the other hand, had a different argument, he blamed Paret s death on the people that attended
boxing matches because he agreed with Mark Jacobs, the prize fight promoter, that people just
came to see a man got hurt or knocked out. For Cousins, boxing was just a show of violence and
the purpose of the sport was only to entertain the crowd. And as I looked at the growth of violence
sports, which had been growing rapidly over the years, I agreed with Cousins argument that people
just saw violence sports as an entertainment. One of the reasons I agreed with Cousins was because
people were seeking for an excitement in their lives, and one of many sources to find that
excitement was through watching violence sports. When people were watching violence sports, it

Not only was it well made, but the actors also acted the part very well and I don t think that anyone
could have done a better job with portraying the characters.

Impact Of Digital Media On Cinema
It is obvious that technological convergence leads to the changes in media production and
distribution (Bolin 2007; Tryon 2009; Dixon Foster 2011). These changes can be observed
through the ways films are promoted and exhibited have also been affected by the use of digital
media. The following sections will provide a detail analysis of these changes.
Tryon (2009) examines the transformation of cinema to the digital form. The proliferation of new
portable technologies sparked the debates about the changes in the film industry. On the one hand,
there are concerns that digital media and home entertainment systems threaten the future of cinema,
as they provide viewers more choices and flexibility in watching movies. On the other hand, media

The first thing to consider is the formats of movies. Digital formats have gradually replaced the
film for many reasons: space efficient, inexpensive, immediate and unlimited (Pavlik McIntosh
2014, pp. 223 224). This is because physical films not only cost more but are also inconvenient to
print, deliver and preserve. Meanwhile, the transfer of data by using digital tools is extremely
fast and easy, whether through a computer or via satellite. For example, traditional types of film
reels, such as the 35mm or 70mm, have given place for high capacity hard drives (Dixon Foster
2011, p. 22). Pavlik McIntosh (2014) also emphasize that while the digital data still need to be
kept in a physical storage, it is still far more space saving than that needed by an analog form.
Furthermore, it is totally free to duplicate the digital movies and send them to distributors.
The movie industry, along with other mass media industries, has become more democratized and
fragmented due to the use of digital technology. While the market is still dominated by a few
giants, there are more spaces for smaller players. Retailers like Netflix or Amazon have paved the
way for niche products to be consumed. This is what academics refer to as the long tail, which is
the main focus of Chris Anderson s 2006 book. According to Anderson, our culture has long been
obsessed with a small number of hits popular contents made by powerful companies.

Animation Monologue
The animation opens to a scene of old houses in the snow and all white and there was girl
prancing alone down a cobbled street. She finds a wall covered with names written in chalk, so
she picks up a piece of chalk herself, and wrote her name, Alma. All of a sudden, she hears a
creaking noise behind her, so when she turns around, she notices a doll on stand at a display
window of an empty store that looks similarly like her, it wore the same clothes as she was
wearing presently. Alma was fascinated by the doll that wore the same clothes, she looks down at
her clothes momentarily, but when she looked up again, the doll vanished. She tries to find the doll
again by looking through other windows of the store, and finally, she sees the doll copy... Show

No matter how much Alma tries to open the door, it seems to be locked, she gets frustrated,
throws a snowball at the door, and gives up. Before she leaves any further, the door magically
opens, Alma treads carefully inside, there are more dolls lining the shelves on the wall, not one
doll looks the same. She gets closer to where her doll copy is standing but kicks another doll on
the ground by accident, a boy doll on a tricycle lying on it s side, trying to bike away. When
Alma fixes the boy doll upright, he starts pedaling away to escape out the open door,
unfortunately, the door closes on him before he can escape. She looks back to where her doll
copy was standing, but sees that it vanished again. She looks around the store, sees that her doll
copy is standing on a shelf now with the other dolls, in the background, the boy doll is still
trying to pedal though the door, banging excessively. Alma is reaching for her doll copy while
suspense music is playing. When she finally touches the doll s face, Alma experiences a series of
disturbing flashes, and now all of a sudden, the point of view sees through the doll s

Common Viral Cold Essay examples
My report is on the common viral cold, I would like to go talk about how it is cought, its
symptoms and how to cure it as quick as possible. The common cold is cought by coming in contact
with some one who has the virus, thus the cold is cought through direct contact, from one infected
person to the next, or from, Being in side in the winter time with the heateron all the time, the lack
of air flow is a great place for air born particles to sit and rest up the heaters on only move the virus

The best way to avoid catching the cold is not to shake hands with a person who has a nasty habit

The virus had the capacity to mutate, so due to the fact that it mutates frequently our bodies find it
difficult to recognize it and it takes longer to fight the infection. Recovery from the cold is fairly
simple, stay warm (not hot) Get lots of fluids and rest. Wait the cold out it should go away in 5
to 7 days, if the symptoms worsen or drag out for ever then go see a doctor, it might have turned
into an upper respiratory infection, which is quite nasty and painful. Contrary to popular believe
over the counter drugs do not do much for the cold, and may only add to your misery by giving
stomach pains and drowsiness.
Cough drops may ease the coughing and sore through, but be are full, cough drops can become
addictive after a few days, and hard candies do the same thing. So use your soar throat as an
example to eat your favorite hard candy. As of yet there is no cure for the common cold, due to
the fact that it is able to mutate it self when ever it sees fit. But it does provide us with some useful
information. Ancient civilizations knew colds as katarrhein, from the Greek meaning to flow down
. In the last century however, the term
cold or catching cold was blamed on England s cold, damp weather, and this term is now used
world wide. Now lets disprove some old wives tales O.K.. Remember how your mother always said

A Report into Consumer Behavioural Theory and its Implications for Benecol s Marketing Strategy
Executive Summary * Understanding consumer behaviour allows us to engage more effectively
with our target market and increase sales * It is vital we understand the needs of our target market
and their motivation for purchasing Benecol or alternative products. * Giving Value to a product
after we understand our consumers needs and motivation for purchase can increase positive
interaction with our market. * When marketing a product, it is advised that the advertisement

However, the value the product gives to the consumer from a marketing perspective will be
discussed in greater details through other behavioural theories as the above chart is too rudimentary
to give explicit argument to Benecol s potential without more exploration.
Information Processing
Something highly intrinsic to the product value of Benecol is the emphasis on being the only range
of foods to contain Plant Stanol Ester, a unique cholesterol lowering ingredient. (Rasio Plc., 2011).
Getting this information to the public through advertising happens through the brand website, but
on television the advertising is focused on basic prompts that will motivate the audience into
believing in the benefits of using the product. One example is the latest UK advert which places
stress on the convenience of the product with a line in fairly small print about the plant stanol ester
underneath the visual of how easy it can be to help lower cholesterol. The information of stanols is
considered secondary in marketing the convenience product and therefore is only likely absorbed
by those already interested in the product or the advertising.
Dissonance
This theory is based on a consumer s cognitive struggle where two beliefs that are reasoned to be
true are not consistent. This process of a cognitive clash brings about a motivation to come to a
positive conclusion where a psychological compromise can occur to bring

People react much more strongly to losses than they do to gains.
This produces a (189) disposition effect: The investor holds onto losers and sells winners. In
effect, people will not realize a loss; they will hold on to a losing company hoping against hope that
the stock will somehow recover.
Is this realistic? Consider Nortel.

VARIABLES TO CORRELATE WITH SHARE PRICE
Alternatives to Beta
CAPM: (191) beta is the sole firm specific risk determinant of the expected return on that stock
(192) beta, and thus the CAPM, has little ability to explain stock returns
Therefore, look for other variables that will explain EXPECTED RETURN (the dependent

Therefore, the definition of beta should change from a (192) stationary concept to a (193) non

Italian Renaissance Beliefs
History paper
During the Italian Renaissance, people were influenced by positive values that helped change
human expectations. The values that people based their lives on we re humanism, secularism,
individualism, skepticism, generalism, and classicism. Humanism was the idea that people have
the ability to do what they want in life. Those who believed in secularism tended to focus more on
what they want to do in life rather than focus on religion. Artists show individualism through their
artwork by creating more unique pieces. The people were always willing to ask questions due to
their skepticism as well. Many talented individuals had skills with several activities expanding
generalism is him in the Italian Renaissance. There was also an interest in classicism as people
wanted to learn about ancient Greece and Rome.
Donatello is known as one of the more influential people of that time period. Donatello was so
admirable in knowledge, in judgment, and in the practice of his art that he may be said to have
been the first to illustrate the art of sculpture among moderns; and he deserves the more
commendation because in his time few antiquities had been uncovered. (Donatello Lives of the

It has always plagued society in many ways. It has grown so that now every person stereotypes

The stereotype is that I m poor or have no future. Or it could be that I m not smart, or even that
my parents aren t smart and that s what landed us in a trailer. Or from the way I act crazy around

Revolutions In The Cuban Revolution
Why do revolutions occur? What actors are usually involved? This are the two central questions
that both Charles Tilley and Samuel Huntington attempt to answer by examining the reoccurring
patterns of armed resistance and collective violence. Huntington and Chase both claim that
revolutions are rare events which occur because of modernization. However, Chase and Huntington
both have very different definitions of modernization, along with different models of revolutions.
Chase points to gender ideas as central to various opposition movements within the Cuban
Revolution, and she highlights the road to a revolutionary moment in which women were pivotal
(Stevens 9/18/17). Huntington s model of revolution involves a sudden explosion of political
participation due to modernization, and revolution occurs when the established order is unable to
keep up with the demands of the newly integrated groups. I feel that Tilley provides the best model
of revolutions because he does not simply attribute armed revolutions to the undefined term of
modernization, but instead focuses on the roles of omnipresent actors involved in these revolutions
(these actors being; the government, the various contenders of power, and the polity). I would
argue that his argument is more logically sound because he points to a tangible sources of power,
such as a government s coercive apparatuses, as a revolutionary barrier which must be overcome
with armed resistance and a strong support base in order for

Or so her father had always told her. Be careful out there, Margaret, he would say, his eyes hard

she didn t scream. The same thing couldn t be said for the hostesses. Blinded by the sudden
return of the lighting, it took Margie s eyes a few seconds to readjust. The hostesses were
holding each other s wrists, looking around with their eyes a little too wide. They laughed after a
moment, releasing each other and giggling like fools. The handsome waiter stumbled into the
room, blinking away the darkness. Is everyone alright? he asked, his accent making the words
nearly unintelligible. But Margie couldn t hear him. She was staring at one of the booths to the

lacquered wood of his booth s table, like he was sleeping. The long fingers of his hand were still
wrapped around the stem of his wine glass. An ever expanding puddle of blood spread across the
table, sliding across the wood to drip to the luxurious carpet. Margie screamed, her voice shaking
the crystals in the chandelier. By the time the police showed up, Margie had managed to gather
herself together enough to get up off of the tiled floor where she

are forced to make decisions about their careers that males are not subjected to. Women live by a

by Deardoff s research. This document was revised by the Honourable Senator Minister Godwin

outlines key elements in regards to female employment and pregnancy discrimination. Another
consistency in Deardoff s findings was shown in there is a need for policy restructuring, as this is
a major hindrance to academic freedom . This is similar to the findings of Curtis, J. W. (2004) in

Low Frequency Noise And Its Effects On Community Health
Environment consist of noise from aircraft, motor vehicle, and trains which collectively

Hepatic Portal Vein Obstruction ( Ehpvo )
Introduction: Extra hepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO), i.e., in the absence of liver cirrhosis
or abdominal cancer, is a rare manifestation of venous thrombosis that often leads to portal
hypertension1.After prothrombin, factor V, next most common cause of thrombophilia is high
plasma levels of coagulation factor VIII, which are present in approximately 20% of patients with
deep vein thrombosis(DVT) of the lower limbs and increase the risk of the disease in a dose

rises in plasma in the presence of inflammation. However, high factor VIII levels are associated
with an increased risk of DVT independently of the acute phase reaction3.

  • 2. Essay on Forced Labor in King Leopold’s Ghost Forced Labor in King Leopold s Ghost In King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild, forced labor seems to be a recurring theme throughout the book. Forced labor would be non existence or be very minimal if it wasn t for colonialism. Google defines colonialism as an exploitation by a stronger country of weaker one; the use of the weaker country s resources to strengthen and enrich the stronger country. King s Leopold s Ghost, Belgium is known as the stronger country in search of a colony (Congo) for its own exploitation. Professor Landstreet defines forced labor as the most extreme form of slavery, work that people are compelled to do against their will and subjected to physical punishment if they don t perform their work. In the following... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The entire system was militarized and Force Publique personals were dispersed around Congo to enforce their power and will. AWS defines social structure as patters of social relationships that are relatively stable. These relationships may be among roles, groups, within a society. The relationships are guided by norms, and by shared meanings held by the people participating in the relationships. Force Publique existed in Congo until Congo got its independence from Belgium in 1960. It was a stable organization that created fear to the Congo by murder, mutilation, and hostage taking to force labor. The main purpose of the Force Publique was to enforce the rubber quotas and force labor. Equipped with a chicotte, a whip made of hippopotamus hide, the Force Publique were able to take and mistreat hostages. FQ were able to hold women s hostage, which forced their husbands to gather wild rubber in the jungle and to meet strict rubber quotas. Communities that were uncooperative with the orders of the FQ often saw their villages burnt to the ground and soldiers took human hands as trophies, but more importantly installed fear in the minds of the natives. Force Publique had no remorse for the atrocities they have caused because to them it was normal, and norm of the job. They were handed money to keep quiet about the crimes committed in the Congo and also got a cut of the rubber revenue. Therefore it was ok in their minds to abuse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Simulation In Health Care What is simulation? Well it is the imitation of the operation of a real world process or system over time. (Google) I think that the use of simulation in health care provides an ideal environmental experience and burst of reality for students. The use of simulation in health care helps decrease risks of any kind while increasing the safety throughout health care. I feel that simulations have definitely provided us with an alternate route for health care, allowing not only students but also healthcare workers to indulge in real life situations. This provides the learning need to understand important techniques and treatments instead of having to just witness. Simulationis significantly utilized in the health care environment. When I was ... • 4. Conducting A Norm Experiment In today s society, norms are expected by everyone. According to the book Essentials of Sociology a Down To Earth Approach, Hansen states that norms are expectations of right behavior (Hansen, 2014). There are also two forms of norms that may be strictly enforced or not. There is folkways and mores. Folkwaysare norms that aren t strictly enforced while mores are strictly enforced for essential thought to care values or the well being of a group (Hansen, 2014). Along with a norm and the two types, there may also be reactions to it. These reactions may be positive or negative and termed as sanctions. Sanctions are either expressions of an approval given to people for upholding norms or expression of disapproval for violating them (Hansen, 2014). In conducting a norm experiment, the terms were put to a test. The experiment consisted of an observed norm violation and an individual norm violation. The experiments resulted in what I had hypothesized. My hypothesisconsisted of sanctions of the norms that were conducted. In the observe norm violation experiment, it was concluded to result in negative sanction. The experiment consisted of a friend of mine and I ordering our lunch at In n Out. It was my friend, Denise s turn to order her meal. Denise ordered a double double with no cheese, no thousand island spread, a single patty and only onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. The employee looked at her in a dumbfound manner and confirmed her ordered as a hamburger. Denise was not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Human Weakness in Macbeth and Othello Macbeth is one of the best known plays written by Shakespeare in the 17th century, Jacobean period. It was the period where the belief in supernatural was greatly held and king James I himself, the author of Divine rights of king adhered in witchcraft and openly practiced the idea of kings being God s representatives on earth, so to even complain about them was a sin. The tragic hero, brave and valiant Macbethhad all the required characteristics of the ideal Scottish soldier; valorous and gallant but he is bound to have a tragic flaw which he is powerless over and the cause of his inevitable death, his vaulting ambition and greed. We then have our other tragedy Othello, which is unique in the literature of time because he was the first... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Macbeth, Duncan and the soldiers call him valiant and brave , Othello is also referred to as valiant and brave by the duke and Montana. Moreover, as we see Macbeth leading the big battle, Othello is reserved by the leaders of Venice who depend on him to fight the biggest battle. He is employed to do so which means he is chosen and his skills and qualities are valued therefore the verb employed is used to convey his importance in the society to the audience. Initially, Shakespeare presents the protagonists as impeccable heroes and suggests to the audience nothing can go wrong in the play. In comparison, Shakespeare uses a significant quote which foreshadows Othello s tragic fall later in the play. When Barbantio warns Othello she has deceived her father and may thee it shows the audience how hurt he is by her deception and warns Othello that if Desdemona can betray her father, whom she has known all her life she can easily betray Othello, This strong point foreshadows Othello s murderous suspicion. Shakespeare also used the character of Iago to not only show how trusting Othello is but also how poor of a judgement he makes. The repetition of honest Iago by Othello warns the audience how Othello s poor judgements will lead him to his downfall as they first see Iago slandering against Othello, so they are warned he is duplicitous beforehand. • 6. Song of Solomon Toni Morrison s award winning novel Song of Solomon is full of very interesting, deep symbolism. Macon Dead III, nicknamed Milkman, is a very symbolic character throughout the novel. His character is not only symbolic, for so is his name. Also, Milkman s paternal aunt, Pilate, has an extremely significannot and symbolic role in the novel. To her father, she represents the child who killed her own mother and took away her father s wife. Seeing that Pontius Pilatesentenced Jesusto death, the name Pilate seems to coincide with her father, Macon Dead s, opinion. Ironically, though, Pilate is a good person and is murdered in the end, just as Jesus was by Pontius Pilate. Another important character in the novel who portrays a great deal of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that she depends so heavily upon her son reveals the numerous insecurities she has about herself. It is the character and the name of Milkman Dead that enlighten readers of these highly significannot facts and symbols throughout the novel. br br Though Milkman is a very symbolic character in Song of Solomon, he is not the only one. Pilate also has both a very symbolic character and name. First of all, her name is derived from the biblical name of Pontius Pilate, the man who sentenced Jesus to death on the cross. This name is very symbolic of her father s feelings toward her. Although her father does not purposely choose her name, considering he can t read, it quickly comes to signify the fact that her father feels that Pilate killed her mother, seeing as that her mother died during childbirth. Ironically, however, Pilate is murdered at the end of the book when she and Milkman go to give her father a proper burial. br br Pilate also represents a great deal more than a murderer. She has a large part of her mother s spirit in her because although, physically, her mother dies while giving birth to her, part of her soul enters Pilate, so part of her literally lives in her daughter. Therefore, when Pilate is killed during the burial of her father, it shows that both she and her mother are tired of life, they have both lived it to the fullest, and they both want to rest in peace with Pilate s father. br ... These four texts has shown that sometimes it s a risk to your own life to be brave. In the book The Maze Runner written by James Dashner, Thomas woke up and finds himself amidst a group of men in large open spaces surrounded by huge concrete walls that will lead him to the maze. It opens every morning and closes when the sun sets. Later in the book, Minho and Alby (the two runners) went into the maze they didn t return on time as usual. People were waiting for them at the gate including Thomas. At the last second they finally came out, however Alby was injured and the gate was about to close. Thomas thought he had no choice but to sacrifice himself for Alby. Thomas knew he had no choice. He moved. Forward. He squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the Maze. • 8. Hydrogen Extraction Process For The Recovery Of Heavy Oil... Abstract Vapor extraction process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen was originally proposed by Dr. Butler during 1989 1991. Since its evolution, vapor extraction has emerged as a very effective and promising technique mainly due to its environment friendly nature and cost effectiveness as compared to other recovery techniques. Vapex is basically an in situ recovery process which injects a vaporized hydrocarbon solvent in the injection well to reduce the viscosity the heavy oil and bitumen and allows it to drain out of the production well through gravity drainage. Mass transfer of vaporized solvent to heavy oil and the gravity drainage are the key parameters which mainly determine the production rate of heavy oil and bitumen with reduced viscosity. This report provides a brief idea about the current heavy oil and bitumen deposits in Canada, a better insight of the Vapex process and the factors which affect the efficiency of the process. Several factors that scale up the performance of the process and important limitations are also indentified that need further research for future growth of the process. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND Energy is the most important factor for growth and development. Petroleum being the primary source of energy can be categorized into conventional and non conventional forms based on the viscosity and API gravity. Heavy oil and Bitumen are the non conventional forms of energy which are often referred as oil sands or tar sands having high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Eminent Domain Case Analysis This seems to be the fundamental issue underlying the paper: a pernicious sense of what is valuable. Multiple times, the paper asserts that the be all, end all metric of value ought to be economic value, specifically the value derived from synergistic arrangements of real property. But viewing a situation through this lens dehumanizes the situation. It leads to situations where we can, with a straight face, describe human settlement as clutter to be disposed of. Indeed, alternative metrics of value exist which add nuance to the situation. Sentimental or cultural value, for example, may be entirely at odds with economic value. Were a city to grow and encompass sacred Native American land, would it not be fair to consider such interests alongside those of the capital class? What about a family with ancestors... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the crucial assumptions underlying the paper s analysis is that a redevelopment effort will necessarily create positive economic value. But what if it does not? Kelo serves as a perfect example. What was supposed to be a profitable facility is currently an empty lot collecting storm debris. At least with eminent domain, voters have some form of cathartic recourse. They can vote out the individuals who made the decision to condemn their homes for an ultimately disastrous product. In a callable fee or floating fee situation, voters have little ability to seek redress, instead nurturing feelings of political disenfranchisement and anti establishment resentment. Further, the threat of losing their seats incentivizes politicians to carefully examine any proposed development and only exercise their power when reasonably sure of its success, minimizing potential mishaps. Thus, voters are both empowered and incentives are put in place to encourage careful decision making concerning development ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her charitable work with impoverished children has formed her reputation as a role model for the people of Britain and much of the world. Much of Dianas life has been devoted to traveling the world to help others. Her work in Africa with the children injured by landmines brought her into the global spotlight (Wexford 3). Princess Diana was more than just a public figure and royal, she was a loving person who brought light to social issues and cared for those who are destitute. A hero, as defined in Webster s Online Dictionary, is a person who a person admired for achievements or noble qualities or one who shows great courage. However, a hero is not just a person with outstanding achievements. A hero is a person who is philanthropic, generous, and kind. Heros fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, and do not judge those who they are fighting for. They are charitable in ways other than donating money, they give their time and effort in order to make the lives of others more pleasant. Guy Montag has been a fireman for ten years, and he has always gotten a certain thrill from starting fires to burn houses containing books to the ground. Sociologists argue that this success is because of religion acting similar to Calvinism. Redding sees their post Confucian values as encouraging, similar to the protestant work ethic. Similarly Berger argues that Pentecostalism in Latin America acts as a functional equivalent to Weber s protestant ethic. Economists estimate total losses could sum up to $2000 to $4000 billion, a number surprisingly not dissimilar to the British Gross Domestic Product. In its post mortem, the self inflicted disaster has commonly brought to light the question: Did bankers, regulators and rating agencies fail to see the flaws, or did they fail to care? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, during the financial crisis, the application of the accounting standards was very different, and did not demand pure FVA. Firstly, the write downs were not as apparent as they seemed. Due to the mixed attribute model, firms were allowed to choose the measurement attribute they desired for a position through how they classified the position. During the crisis, banks did indeed utilize these safeguards and discretion built into FVA on their mortgage based securities. This resulted in the re classification of many fair value assets into other categories in which weaker impairment standards were applied. Hence, most bank financial assets were valued at amortized historic costs on their balance sheets. With only trading type operations reported under fair value principles . This implies that FVA standards would have made little difference in a bank s balance sheets and regulatory capital ratios. For the same reason, written down values were also barely understatements. If anything, they were in fact overstatements as banks had the individual discretion in determining fair value. Lastly, FVA standards also allowed the use of valuation models in the calculation of fair values when markets become inactive, and stated that market prices from forced sales should not be used. Hence FVA should have mitigated contagion effects, and actually protected institutions against negative spill overs from distressed banks respectively. In a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sometimes, it may be blissful and enjoyable, like when you save an abused dog from potentially dying. Other times it can be heartbreaking and unpleasant. There is no simple rule for when to express feelings. Instead, we must exercise judgment. We have an ethical obligation to make thoughtful choices about whether, when, and how to express our emotions. At times, being a veterinarian, I may want to grieve with a family over the loss of their pet or even anger if I am unable to help an animal in need. However, displaying such emotions would be extremely inappropriate and unprofessional while simultaneously violating professional norms. Instead of revealing the emotions described above, a veterinarian should exhibit strength and courage. They should be able to remain positive during even the bleakest times. For example, if I were to discover that one of my client s pets had an incurable type of cancer and would require euthanasia, I would want to remain optimistic, while providing comfort to the family and the pet during such a hard time. If the family senses my sadness or anger, they are more inclined to feel the same way as me. With that being said, if I present a positive, relaxed mood, the family would be more slanted towards those feelings. Although I would be saddened by an event such as this, it would be quite unprofessional for me to do break into tears, despite my sadness. Provide support for your rationale. One ratio that is easy to fixate on is the PEG ratio, or profit earnings/growth ratio. Per Yahoo Finance, that metric currently sits at 1.51 for the next five years expected and anything between 1 and 2 is generally considered to be decent to good depending on the industry. The rationale behind this ratio being chosen is that a firm must be growing and expanding to be viable long term. Just showing a profit is not good enough because a firm can be retracting yet showing a profit at the same time. For example, if a retail outlet is closing stores, that does not mean they would post a loss but it s far from good if the number of open stores is going down because that would almost certainly mean that revenue is also going down unless the firm is expanding greatly its online offerings. Growing up as a Chicano in America in the 50s and 60s, Soto worked in fields as a laborer from a young age. It is evident that coming from a Hispanic working class family greatly influenced his poem Ambition . As he is known for, Soto s poem is filled with imagery of everyday life, while harping on important details and themes of things that he may have seen around him., but in this instance, there was a bit of confusion. To begin with, the poem Ambition starts off with the line For years our ambition was to eat/Chicken (1 2). Without further analysis, at this point the reader is most likely confused, much like I was. Chicken? How could eating be one s goal, one s aspiration in life? The word ambition is usually associated with lofty goals. It would not seem out of place to say that one s ambition was to become a doctor or to make a better life for oneself. Excluding the internet however, it is questionable whether players of video games are sharing a common experience when they play the game separately. It is possible to discuss in great detail the events of a video game with a friend you have never played with because the experience was identical to you both. The question is if this is then a form of mass communication. MMORPGS such as Runescape provide a common gaming experience to millions of users throughout the globe. It is arguable that the users are receiving the same message, i.e., the game is mass communicating the same messages to the various players. A life without the presence of mass media would seem improbable for many! Let s read about the pros and cons of mass media and its effect on a larger scale. Mass media enjoys a very prominent role in our lives. There are various effects of mass media on the society at large. Media tends to influence and it s obvious, there are positive as well as negative influences of mass media. However, it also depends upon the way audiences perceive things. The security concerns of choices in the set up of the connections for both parties including: type of encryption available and Firewall issues. By evaluating who is using the VPN, the hardware necessary to make good connections, the pros and cons of differing connection protocols, and evaluating past security problems, setting up the VPN services becomes a much smoother process. VPN s and Firewalls Anyone who will be accessing the VPN services should have a firewall in place.Once a VPN connection is established, the client is essentially able to access information behind the company s firewall, thus creating an access hole. Therefore, insisting a client use and maintain a firewall is another layer in the security of the VPN setup. The ease of changing the firewall rules to allow VPN connections should be addressed. Very old firewalls, either appliance types or software types, may be difficult or impossible to configure to allow VPN access.A small business may stay with an old firewall for many reasons, one of which might be the fact that there has been no reason to upgrade in the past. It would be prudent to check the firewall documentation before becoming enmeshed in the VPN process, only to have it fail for lack of access, or creating a setup that might be considered insecure. • 33. Solid Wood Hardwood Wood Flooring Solid wood flooring will last more than 100 years, and the finish can be easily renewed when needed. Just having wood floors increases the value of your home. Not too long ago, the only choice you had was the old fashioned solid wood tongue and groove strips in maple or oak. Today, wood flooring can be planks from old barns, exotic woods, pre finished engineered wood strips which eliminate the dust and disruption of finishing on site. You even can have wood laminate flooring, which isn t wood, but looks like wood at a much lower cost. SOLID WOOD FLOORING Solid wood floors, although beautiful, can t be used everywhere. They must be nailed to a sub floor. This makes solid wood unsuitable for use directly over concrete. Adding a sub floor between the concrete and the wood flooring might result in a height problem where the floor meets an adjoining room. Moisture causes wood to expand, so it s not appropriate in basements. Humidity can lead to squeaking and buckling. The trend seems to be for homeowners to buy wood flooring with a factory applied finish. This eliminates dust from sanding, fumes from finishing, and waiting before the floor can be walked on. Another benefit is that the factory finishes are usually much tougher than the polyurethane applied in the field. The downside of pre finishing is that since that floor doesn t get sanded after it s installed, there are slight bumps and dips where the sub floor isn t perfectly level, and where the flooring strips ... How could a seven year old survive without enough protein? These were a few of many ignorant questions that bombarded the ears of my proud parents. Throughout my young life, I always had a deep appreciation and passion for living creatures. So much so, that ants, crawling along the sidewalk would captivate my attention; snakes, slithering through the sludgy, green creek water would fascinate me. Due to my intense love of animals, the thought of harming them deeply saddened me. At the young age of seven years old, I became a self proclaimed tree hugger, peace lover and no meateater whom by the way, did receive enough protein. As a young child, I became a vegetarian due to one single, overwhelming reason: animals and I are the same. We breathe the same air, we walk among the same ground, we have complex and very real feelings and we have families. I realized this whilst spending an afternoon in my favorite creek spot in my hometown. I watched frogs, jump from rock to rock, crawfish scatter around the creek... The label, vegetarian, describes a human who does not consume animal meat. In my case, being a vegetarian is much more than what I eat, or rather, don t eat. It is what I believe in. • 36. Violence in Boxing and Similar Sports In 1962, Norman Cousins wrote an essay about the dangers that came with sport of boxing called Who Killed Benny Paret? . His essay focused on a match that resulted in the death of a boxer named Benny Paret. The Investigations on Paret s death reflected on many aspects, such as the role of the referee who did not act in time to stop the fight, the doctor s examinations if he was really fit, the opponent who did not stop when Paret did not respond to his punches, and Paret s manager and boxing authorities who were criticized because they gave Paret clearance to fight even though they knew that he had two previous fights in less than six months. Cousins on the other hand, had a different argument, he blamed Paret s death on the people that attended boxing matches because he agreed with Mark Jacobs, the prize fight promoter, that people just came to see a man got hurt or knocked out. For Cousins, boxing was just a show of violence and the purpose of the sport was only to entertain the crowd. And as I looked at the growth of violence sports, which had been growing rapidly over the years, I agreed with Cousins argument that people just saw violence sports as an entertainment. One of the reasons I agreed with Cousins was because people were seeking for an excitement in their lives, and one of many sources to find that excitement was through watching violence sports. The following sections will provide a detail analysis of these changes. Tryon (2009) examines the transformation of cinema to the digital form. Digital formats have gradually replaced the film for many reasons: space efficient, inexpensive, immediate and unlimited (Pavlik McIntosh 2014, pp. 223 224). This is because physical films not only cost more but are also inconvenient to print, deliver and preserve. Meanwhile, the transfer of data by using digital tools is extremely fast and easy, whether through a computer or via satellite. For example, traditional types of film reels, such as the 35mm or 70mm, have given place for high capacity hard drives (Dixon Foster 2011, p. 22). Pavlik McIntosh (2014) also emphasize that while the digital data still need to be kept in a physical storage, it is still far more space saving than that needed by an analog form. Furthermore, it is totally free to duplicate the digital movies and send them to distributors. The movie industry, along with other mass media industries, has become more democratized and fragmented due to the use of digital technology. This are the two central questions that both Charles Tilley and Samuel Huntington attempt to answer by examining the reoccurring patterns of armed resistance and collective violence. Huntington and Chase both claim that revolutions are rare events which occur because of modernization. However, Chase and Huntington both have very different definitions of modernization, along with different models of revolutions. Chase points to gender ideas as central to various opposition movements within the Cuban Revolution, and she highlights the road to a revolutionary moment in which women were pivotal (Stevens 9/18/17). Huntington s model of revolution involves a sudden explosion of political participation due to modernization, and revolution occurs when the established order is unable to keep up with the demands of the newly integrated groups. I feel that Tilley provides the best model of revolutions because he does not simply attribute armed revolutions to the undefined term of modernization, but instead focuses on the roles of omnipresent actors involved in these revolutions (these actors being; the government, the various contenders of power, and the polity). I would argue that his argument is more logically sound because he points to a tangible sources of power, such as a government s coercive apparatuses, as a revolutionary barrier which must be overcome with armed resistance and a strong support base in order for ...
