Nancy Mairs Cripple Analysis
Out of seven possibilities, the most common ones are Handicapped, Disabled, or Cripple. Which one
did Mairs choose? In this passage Nancy Mairs, a dear woman who has multiple sclerosis openly
identifies herself as a cripple , instead of handicapped or disabled. Mairs presents herself in a specific
way to show why she made that word choice of cripple to name herself. Upon doing that Mairs uses
rhetorical features such as tone, word choice, and rhetorical structure to further her reason. In this
passage, Mairs presents herself at the outset having a candid and elegy tone. The first sentence states: I
am cripple; and that right there without no further details shows the candidness of this passage. As she

American Character Then and Now
A notion that still holds strong today, Fredrick Jackson Turner s idea of American character was one
based on trials and experiences. Unlike Crevecour, Turner believed that American character was not
simply a product of English character transported to America, but rather another idea altogether
(Faragher 63). He expressed this opinion the best when he said, In the crucible of the frontier the
immigrants were Americanized, liberated, and fused into a mixed race, English in neither nationality
nor characteristics (Faragher 64). How exactly did American character form and what defines ... Show

The combination of the Turner thesis and Peck s translation of it, provided a foundation that would
help form American identity: individualism and collectivity. A perfect example of this today is the
sport of baseball, America s pastime.
By the time Turner presented his thesis in 1893 at the Colombian Exhibition in Chicago, the myth of
the cowboy and the myth of the frontier had already made their way into novels for the enjoyment of
east coasters who were curious of the west (Cullen 127). Characters like Buffalo Bill, Nathaniel
(Natty) Bumpo, and Daniel Boone helped illustrated American character. The introduction of she
males, women with feminine and masculine qualities, were also an important feature of these novels
west (Cullen 127). Characters like Jane, from Calamity Jane by Edward L. Wheeler, were like
predecessors of women rights; they were heroines who demanded and received, but remained
kindhearted at the same time (Faber all).
Although all of these characters had a very profound role in molding people s impression of the west,
the novel which combined many individual roles of each western into one was probably The Virginian
by Own Wister. This novel was so influential in helping to engrave American character in that it
incorporated Turner s idea of the disappearing

b) How the Quantum Free Electron Theory predicts that the conductivity of metals decreases as the
temperature increases.
In the Quantum Free Electron Theory the electrons are considered as waves, so the electrons will have
much similar behaviour to waves. The temperature is related to the heat capacitance. So each element
will have different heat capacitance.
The Quantum Free Electron predicts that scattering causes electrons to drop back down in Energy.
Which means that as the temperature goes down the stability of the electrons will increase; also the
amount of electron which can jump into a higher level will decrease thus more stability in the atom.
This means better conductivity in lower temperatures. So when the temperature increases, it will cause
vibrations that change the lattice, and the lower level electron will get excited to move into a higher
level which causes instability in the element. Thus, the conductivity will decrease.
c) How the Band Theory predicts that the conductivity of silicon increases as the temperature
increases.
The band theory gives explanations of how Semiconductors differ from metals because as the
temperature increases the conductivity increases. The Band Theory considers that for

Explain Why Video Sports Should Be Considered Sports
Should Video Games Be Considered Sports?
As time moves on, things we do physically have slowly made its way to becoming electronic, such as
e mail, and researching papers. Is this also the case for sports? E Sports are electronic sports, which
are video games that are play at a professional level, for games such as StarCraft, League of Legends,
DoTA 2, and etcetera. While the consensus of whether they are sports or not is mixed, I believe that
they are not.
The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or
team competes against another team or other individuals for entertainment. While E Sports cover the
latter half of the definition, it leaves out the physical exertion of real sports. Despite that being the
case, many others consider them sports. They even have their own page on the ESPN website. ...

League of Legends, the world s most popular MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) has two teams
of five playing against each other to destroy their opponent s base. Doing so requires great
communication and knowledge of the game, something that is required in traditional sports as well.
The process to join a professional team for League of Legends is similar to other sports as well.
Sometimes, first, the player has to perform at a certain level to be found by a scout. Then, they have to
try out amongst other players, then compete in a smaller tournament to get a spot in the big leagues.
Other times, some pro teams only require a series of tryouts for the position they want to play in the
game.
While E Sports do meet some of the requirements of being a sport, I believe that instead of being a
sport, they are just competitions. Even though they have the team and skill aspect of a sport, they still
lack the physical exertion of a real sport. Maybe someday video games will reach the true definition of
a sport, but that day is not

Heavy Equipment Operator
If you can t play the guitar and sing in Nashville, you might as well just be a construction worker

America s Rapid Industrialization During The Progressive Era
As America entered the 20th century, the country entered a time period known as the Progressive Era.
This era was one defined by political reform and social activism as well as myriad of problems arising
from America s rapid industrialization. During the Progressive era, America faced several
international, political, and social challenges that would set us on the road to the society in which we
now live. During the Depression of the 1890s, the National Association of Manufacturers argued that
the American economy could only expand with new foreign markets. They wanted President William
McKinley to bring American to every corner of the globe. Later on, there was a reemergence of Cuban
independence movement from Spain. President ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, over time government corruption became common. Reformers like Teddy Roosevelt in
Washington and Governor Hiram Johnson in California responded to an epidemic of political and
civic corruption by expanding the role of government in regulating the economy and in giving
citizens, for the first time, direct access to the legislative process. The federal income tax and the
direct election of senators, for example, were a part of the Populist program, and Prohibition grew
from a pre‐Civil War anti‐alcohol reform tradition. In addition, muckrakers, reform minded American
journalist who targeted corruption, made Americans aware of the serious failings in society and built
public support for change. Exposés such as Lincoln Steffens The Shame of the Cities (1904), an attack
on municipal corruption, and Ida Tarbell s History of the Standard Oil Company (1904), which
chronicled John D. Rockefeller s ruthless business practices, often first appeared in the new mass
circulation magazines, such as McClure s and Cosmopolitan, and were later published as books. The
muckrakers impact could be powerful, as in the case of Upton Sinclair s The Jungle (1906), a book
whose vivid descriptions of working and sanitary conditions in Chicago s meatpacking plants led
directly to federal laws regulating the industry. Other political reforms included the direct primary a

Comparing Plath s The Bell Jar And Its Affiliates
The Bell Jar and Its Affiliates
Frequently, a writer will express the same symbols and themes in a variety of their works. This is the
case with Sylvia Plath, who not only wrote a multitude of poems, but also wrote the renowned novel,
The Bell Jar. Three of Plath s poems that share similar elements to her novel are Lorelei , Daddy , and
The Applicant . These ideas include death beckoning the characters, an unstable family unit, and
sexism towards women. The poems Lorelei , Daddy , and The Applicant can be compared to Plath s
novel The Bell Jar, by examining the key themes and characteristics of the works. The first of Plath s
poems that is comparable to The Bell Jar is Lorelei . In both of the works, death beckons to the
characters. In Lorelei , siren like creatures beckon for the speaker to drown herself. The speaker notes
how their ice hearted calling (Lorelei 31) is compelling her to commit suicide. This can be compared
to the ocean waves in The Bell Jar, which [draw] back, like a hand, ... Show more content on

This poem shows all of the sexist expectations of a woman that the protagonist in The Bell Jar hopes
to escape. The poem objectifies women as possessions that are supposed to bring teacups and roll
away headaches / and do whatever you tell them (Applicant 13 14). Esther, however, detests these
ideals, refusing to learn a new way of writing as [she] hate[s] the idea of serving men in any way (Bell
Jar 76). Esther also goes so far as to proclaim that she does not want to get married. She states that the
last thing she want[s is] infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. [She wants]
change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions [herself], like the colored arrows from a

atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons until the shell fills up. While doing this, atoms react and
form chemical bonds with other atoms.
Based on this, what can you infer about the reactivity of helium and neon? They are both noble gases
so they are very resistant to a chemical reaction and don t react to other elements.
11. Think and discuss: Select the PERIODIC TABLE tab, and look at the second row, or period, of the

Reflection Of Education As A Vocab Levels In Elementary...
I m really excited to be in your class this year. We read romeo and juliet last year but only scratched
the surface in terms of new vocabulary and challenging literature. This year I am optimistic that we
will tackle harder books together and challenge our vocab levels. I m not too sure that I m all that
exciting, but I ll try. My full name is Jackson Heath Meriwether and I was born in Columbia, South
Carolina just like my parents and theirs before me. The education I ve received started in Pre k at a
little private school called Harmony. From there I had elementary school at Brennen from
kindergarten through 5th grade. I tried a charter school for the sciences for the first half of 6th grade
and after that I ended up here at heathwood.
My extracurricular activities and hobbies range from soccer, cross country, swimming, and mountain
biking to gaming and watching movies. I play soccer and run cross country for heathwood and play
for a challenge travel soccer team in the fall. Lately I ve also been trying to get back into guitar. Of
these hobbies the one most important to me would probably be soccer since it combines a team sport
with the need for an individual to excel at the same time. What I want from my education is really the
ability to talk, hold a conversation, and be around every type of person from an english scholar to a
mathematician. I not to picky when it comes to teaching styles and teachers, however I prefer to be
challenged in class while engaging with a

The Influence Of Deception In Raven Black
Deception is the action of betraying and letting someone down. Sometimes individuals are so caught
up in the moment that they do not think about the consequences of their actions. In the novel Raven
Black, deception is shown throughout the story by a murder, mystery of a missing girl, and a kidnap.
The thriller Raven Black, by Ann Cleeves, takes place during the dark cold winter in January, in the
Shetland Islands. In the novel, every character reveals a different mindset by their actions and
thoughts. In the article, Fixed vs. Growth: The Two Basic Mindsets That Shape Our Lives, Maria
Popova talks about how every individual has a different mindset. Someone with a fixed mindset
assumes that they cannot change for the better and their intelligence or qualities are fixed traits. On the
contrary, someone with a growth mindset enjoys a challenge, they believe they can learn from their
mistakes and most importantly they know there is always room for improvement. In Raven Black,
Inspector Jimmy Perez, Magnus Tait and Sally Henry show whether they have a fixed or growth
mindset, which result in how they act and think throughout the novel. Inspector Jimmy Perez is a
diligent and clever detective who does not settle for the first clue he notices in an investigation. In the
novel Raven Black, by Ann Cleeves Inspector Perez shows he has a growth mindset, by having an
open mind and not blaming Magnus Tait for the murder of Catherine Ross. He takes into consideration
that he cannot be

Explain The Six Major Body Segments Movements
There are six fundamental movements of major body segments. They all range in movement to utilize
the primary joints of the body.
First there is Flexion, which is a decrease of angles between body parts. One primary example of this
would be calf raises, which cause dorsiflexion as the ankles push upwards and the toes force down.
Second we have extension, which is the opposite of flexion, causing an increase in angles between
body parts. The best example exercise for extension would be leg extensions, which causes movement
and extension at the knee in order to stretch and strengthen the legs.
Third there is abduction, the movement of the body segments away from the midline. One example of
this would be hip abductor machine when the legs move

Evaluating The Play Julius Caesar
In this project we had to create a film that incorporated the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, by
using a reality TV show. One of the very first obstacles we had went through was deciding on which
reality TV to use. I had wanted to do the reality TV show called Survivor, but most of my other group
members wanted to do The Kardashians. The reason I had wanted to do survivor was because I felt
like it gave our film a really good structure to follow unlike The Kardashians. We easily resolved this
issue by just taking a vote, which led to my group using The Kardashians. This was an example of one
of our group s smaller issues. Now moving on to a bigger issue that we had, which was trying to find

We did finally figure out some days and places that we were able to meet up. We ended up going to

and always seemed to have some type of excuse to not being able to meet up. While trying to figure
out how long we were going to stay at Barnes Nobles to film we decided to stay from one pm to 5 pm
and Vanessa responded by saying Well I have a life, so I don t want to stay that long . When she had
made that comment everyone in my group just looked at her with a dumbfounded look. After that
comment, it lead to another big issue in my group; the unreliability of Vanessa. There were many
moments that made Vanessa unreliable: waiting till the last moment to do her part of the script, barely
being able to make it to any of the meeting we had after school, being off task, and messing up her
part of the script. On top of that she was bossy at times when she didn t even earn the right to be

To His Coy Mistress
To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell is about a man s lust for a woman. The narrator uses terms
like coy to describe his mistress. He also describes sex by using the word ball. The narrator also
compares their love to a vegetable that is steadily growing. The narrator uses words wisely in his
appeal to his lover. The narrator is trying to rush her into making a decision about loving him. The
narrator called his love interest coy because she wouldn t commit to him. The definition of coy is
affectedly and often flirtatiously shy or modest, the narrator seems to be growing tired of the woman
not committing to him. The narrator is trying to tell the woman that he will love her forever hoping
that it will make her fall for him once and for all, My vegetable love should grow Vaster than empires,
and more slow (Marvell). The narrator is lusting for this woman and will stop at nothing until she is

narrator is willing to spend time with his mistress while falling deeper and deeper in love. The narrator
compares his love to a vegetable because vegetables grow slowly and steadily just like his love. But

At 7:00 a.m. the Union Pacific passenger train thundered through town at seventy miles per hour. It
seldom stopped. Few passengers arrived at or left from Haines. Leaning out of the open door of the

Apollo 13 Pros And Cons
As I have mentioned so many times in my previous posts, I m so into watching and reading up on

The mission was supposed to highlight the third moon landing, however, the novelty of moon landing
among the general public seemed to have already worn off, none of TV networks in the United States
broadcast the live transmission from the Apollo 13 crew members, only a handful of family members
and NASA s flight controllers actually watched it.
However, what seemed to have been a plain sailing mission was about to take a sudden turn for the

In order to conserve as much energy as possible, they had to turn off whatever energy consuming

The mission of Apollo 13 was literally fraught with danger; once a problem was solved, another issue
cropped up and both the astronauts and the flight controllers were forced to tackle those problems one
by one; putting heads together in order to safely bring the astronauts back down to Earth.
Among many things, what struck me the most was the abortion of the moon landing mission.

Research Paper On Frederic Chopin
When deciding on a composer from the romantic period to research, I realized that I didn t have much
insight or knowledge on the topic. I chose Frederic Chopin using completely superficial reasoning: He
is of Polish descent and so am I. I also found that most of his works were solo piano pieces, and that
really appealed to me for some reason. Chopin was born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin in the small
town of Zelazowa Wola, just outside of Warsaw, Poland on March 1st, 1810. His father was a French
native who immigrated to Poland in 1787, and joined the Polish National Guard, severing his ties with
his former homeland. Chopin s mother was from a poor, but respected Polish family. They married in
1806 and had their four children in quick succession soon after. Although the father made his living by

also have been the cause of his younger sister s illness that she died of. These are just my own
thoughts and opinion on that subject. * Living in Paris, Chopin was in the elite artistic social circles of
the time. It is in those circles that he met an outgoing, author who penned under the name George
Sand. George was actually a woman named Amandine Aurore Lucille Dupin Dudevant who was a
major figure in Parisian culture. Artistically, they were on the same level. Personally, they were polar
opposites. This might have been what the attraction was that they had for one another. Chopin was
quiet and reserved, while Sand was a cigar smoking woman who often dressed in men s clothing. (V.

Park Avenue Money And The American Dream Analysis
Park Avenue: money, power, and the American dream is a documentary. In this documentary, both
Park Avenue in oh so wealthy Manhattan and Park Avenue which is 10 minutes away and located in
the Bronx are compared and contrasted. Why would they do this? Well, people who own apartments at
740 Park Avenue make up America s ruling class while the people who live on Park Avenue in the
South Bronx make up the poorest congressional district in the United States . In America, the rich
continue to become wealthier while the poor continue to struggle, dividing them into different
subcultures. Great isn t it? It all basically comes down to the socioeconomic status of these people. In
the opening of this documentary, the first shots are of the beautiful buildings, expensive cars, and even
white gloved doorman standing outside, all of the materialistic things. This is the life that most wish to
live. The media even will try to persuade people that this is the dream , the life that everyone works
towards and wants to live. In reality though, can most people even consider this goal attainable? This
is the question that director Alex Gibney visits and revisits multiple times within this documentary.

political manipulations of the country s wealthiest citizens. 740 ... Show more content on

A Brief Draft On Advocate For Abused Women And Children
Final draft on Advocate for Abused Women and Children Advocate for women and children believes
that providing food and shelter for displace women and children of abused home is not good enough.
The organization in addition to food and shelter will help educate the community on the effect of
domestic violence on children. Everyone knows that violence at home affects every member of the
family. That is why the organization will provide large range of service which includes group
counselling, case management advocacy, doctors, nurses etc. Abused women and children are the
weaker set of people in our society; they need the support of the people and leaders in our society.
Applying the wisdom of the sadhu, Hobbes, kyi and al farabi, the leaders of our organization will
educate the people on the dangers/effect of domestic violence on children, thereby advocating for
maximum care and solution to the growing problem.

Estelle! I squealed, stepping out of my car onto the dewy grass.
Before me loomed the old observatory which would be our home for the next year. Its walls were an
expanse of red brick stacked on red brick, contrasting the two white front doors and the white domed
tower. It sat atop Henrick Cliff with large fields sloping down from the front of the house. The tower
could be seen rising from the back of the house, with the cliffs edge and sea beyond that. The
observatory looked like a forgotten castle, waiting for the next rulers to occupy it.
The building had been boarded up since the thirties, when its owner, Henrick En Thanatos whom the

Read the journal, it explains it all. I said starting down the stairs.
Estelle picked it up and flipped through it. Empty page upon empty page looked back at her, her
fingers running over the flawlessly smooth cover.
Marie...Marie! She cried, taking the stairs as fast as she could after me. I had stopped at the cliff when
she said, There is nothing here!
Yes, there is, I retorted, swaying back and forth. It s the only words there. I know what I am supposed

She flipped to the back, No, there is nothing.
Right here, I said, pointing at the lines. Gifted eyes allow you to become one free yourself. It s time
for me to free myself.
Marie, there is nothing there!
So much is there, so much to see, you just cannot. You are not one; you are not gifted like me. I can be

Stan Lee Research Paper
With great power comes great responsibility. It s a quote everyone has heard in their life time, and this
man is the mastermind behind the phrase. In Stan Lee s case he may have created the catchy line as a
one off for a character, but never would he of expected to have it end up in dozens of movies and tv
shows spanning decades. Stanley Martin Lieber, later legally changed to his pseudonym name Stan
Lee, is the creator of some of the worlds most recognizable and profitable characters and franchises on
the planet to this day through Marvel Comics. To name just a few of these marvelous characters;
Spider Man, Iron Man, Hulk, The X Men, Black Panther, and literately 100 s more. Lee grew up

Jack Kirby and Joe Simon briefly decide to leave the company. This gives Stan Lee free range to
create characters and story lines as he pleases. After a long gray period of watered down comics that
people were not enjoying reading or creating Lee makes a bold move based on the opinion of his wife,
Joan Lee, who sees how much they are struggling. He pushes his higher ups to allow him to start
producing comics outside the CCA. They hesitantly allow him to try this risky business move. This
turns out to be just the step Timely needed as it saved them from bankruptcy. Fantastic Four is
published pushing them out in front of their only leading competitor DC for the first time in history.
The success of Fantastic Four brings upon the X Men, Hulk, Iron Man, and the rise of multi
cultural/ethnic characters to the comic world. Timely promptly rebrands to Marvel Comics, and the
Silver Age of Comics comes to a close and the Bronze Age begins. The Bronze Age (1970 s/1985 )
restored the comic culture to America and slowly began spreading around the globe as well. As they
evolved Stan Lee pushed boundaries right along with it. Lee is largely credited for being the person
who re envisioned the very structure of how heroes are portrayed and wrote. He strongly believed the
character under the mask is just as or more important than the hero itself. This shift in direction
changed the entire way visual story telling was perceived at the time. Now characters weren t just
super, they were human too. Relatable people with struggles, relationships, and even everyday jobs.
He also strived to set the majority of Marvels stories in the real world and not in fictional settings.
This allowed for relatable fathomable individuals and the creation of Marvels biggest triumph

Role Of Doctors And The Medical System In Mrs Dalloway
Doctors and The Medical System in Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway
Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway is a piece of literature that helped to push forward a culture of writing
that she felt was otherwise stuck. Along with a style that transcended how people thought about telling
a story, was the commentary. The story is riddled with commentary on politics, society, war, class, and
the medical system. Virginia Woolf lets her worldviews bleed into her writing in a way that is
somehow both subtle and also still direct. She lets the characters have their own experiences and
dialogue, which show her views from different perspectives and without just coming out and saying it.
The commentary that this is most evident in is Woolf s commentary on doctors and the medical
system as a whole. Throughout Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf shows the incompetence of doctors and
the medical system through Clarissa and Septimus s interactions with them.
As the novel unfolds you begin to see more of the commentary on the medical system leak into the
story. When the novel begins, Clarissa is leaving to go out for a walk around the town. Clarissa hasn t
been able to get out as much as she has liked because she has struggled with her own illnesses that
have kept her presumably somewhat bed ridden. Although Clarissa s interactions with the doctors in
this story are not necessarily direct, it is made known that she has at least some distain for the time in
her life that she was struggling with her health.

J. Edgar Hoover s Skills
J. Edgar Hoover was born on January 1st, 1895. Growing up, I believe J. Edgar Hoover learned his
skills while still in school. He was on the debate team in highschool, which helped him with his public
speaking, and he also learned some leadership skills while in college. He didn t have to join the army
after finishing school, because he had to take care of his mom. He eventually graduated college near
the top of his class, with a Bachelor s Degree in law, which led him to his first job in the Department
of Justice, starting out as a Clerk. Here, he went through the ranks of the Department pretty fast,
because most men were going into the army, which left open positions. After rising through the ranks
of the Department of Justice, he eventually was appointed as the director of the then known as,
General Bureau of Investigation. After becoming Director, he immediately was involved in taking
down several big criminals of the time. Some people thought that these criminals were good, because
they d sometimes help out the people they robbed, which were mostly banks. However, after he took
these people down, people s minds were changed about him, and the Agency.
J. Edgar Hoover liked to take credit for things he did not do. There was one incident where New York
Police were after a very popular murderer at the time, who had kidnapped and killed a young boy.

The Treatment of Phobias Essay
Everyone in life has fears, it s a natural way our brains process certain objects or situations that may
be dangerous. Common fears may be heights or spiders; some would rationally go out of their way to
avoid these, but this is quite different from having a phobia. A phobia is an irrational distress with a
particular object or concept/idea. Although fears are well known now, they do not have to disrupt the
lives of those who are living them. Throughout the essay there will be three different treatments with
three different phobias in ways to cure a phobia; the first is a trauma focused treatment approach for
travel phobia, assessment and treatment for childhood phobias, and hypnosis in facilitating clinical
treatment of injections. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When introduced to in vivo exposure the patients showed an increase of PTSD symptoms (Handley,
Salkovskis, Ehlers, 2008). When performing the study 125 people received TF CBT, and the

mild travel anxiety with up to 7.3 sessions. Although, there were found that one treatment would be
more beneficial than the other in terms of reduction of symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD.
Overall the signs of Travel Phobia and anxiety were reduced in both methods of treatments giving the
researchers plenty of evidence for being successful in a trauma focused treatment plan.
The study case of children phobia is not like others present before it, this case suggests that that to

aspect that differs from others is that it will assess the home living of children as well as their
caregivers. Their study examined predictors of treatment outcome for 106 phobic and anxious youth

fear survey schedules, anxiety questionnaires and behavioral observations. Taking methods from the
DSM IV C there are separate questionnaires for both parent and child on different phobia types

Illiteracy, And Illiteracy In The Beverly Hillbillies
I definitely agree with Dean s claim that the program exploits hillbilly, redneck, or white trash
stereotypes. Poverty, working class, and illiteracy are always sensitive themes that have ever been
used to mock up the poor in the society, and the show The Beverly Hillbillies is a specific example
about this these themes. The episode is about the Clampetts, who suddenly became rich, moved to a
mansion in Beverly Hill and tried their best to adjust to their new life. The director of the show
exploited four of the members in the Clampetts in a negative and stereotypical way. They were all
depicted as poor, illiterate, and foolish people. For example, Granny put pieces of wood into the stove
and ignited it. Or even though Jethro was a grown up

Chamberlin Case
Chamberlain Case (1984). On 29 October 1982, in the Northern Territory Supreme Court, Lindy
Chamberlain was convicted of murdering her nine week old daughter, Azaria, by cutting her throat in
the front seat of the family car at a camping area beside Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia. Her
husband, Michael, was convicted as an accessory. Appeals to the Federal Court and the High Court
were unsuccessful. The convictions were quashed in 1988 after a judicial inquiry.
Few cases have generated as much public controversy. The role of the High Court in this drama was,
however, a minor one. Controversy did not stem from the novelty and significance of the doctrinal
issues raised by the case but from the facts : the question of what had ... Show more content on

With no body, no evidence of motive and no eyewitness evidence that even vaguely incriminated the
Chamberlains, the Crown case was wholly circumstantial, and supported in the main by the claims of
expert witnesses to the effect that the state of Azaria s clothing was inconsistent with a dingo attack,
that there was a bloody handprint on the jumpsuit; and that substantial quantities of blood, including
the blood of an infant, had been found throughout the Chamberlain car.
There were many problems with the methods and findings of these witnesses, only some of which,
however, could be effectively communicated to a jury in a criminal trial. The Crown invited the jury to
infer that in a space of five to ten minutes, during which Lindy returned to the tent with the baby and
six year old Aidan, she had cut Azaria s throat and stuffed the body into Michael s camera case while
her son apparently stood by. She had then raced Aidan back to the barbecue area, where normal life
was resumed, and displayed no signs of unease or distress until the opportunity presented itself of
blaming a dingo for the baby s disappearance. The Chamberlains were said to have later buried the
body, then exhumed it so that the clothing could be placed in a strategic location to lend further
credibility to the dingo tale.
In February 1984, the High Court refused Lindy Chamberlain s appeal by majority (Murphy and
Deane dissenting). Earlier, Brennan (sitting alone) had refused her

The Central Park Five Is A Documentary By Ken Burns About
The Central Park Five is a documentary by Ken Burns about five young black men who were
wrongfully convicted of a crime they did not commit. This documentary focused on showing how
these boys got convicted, why they got convicted, the effects and response from the public of their
convictions, and their release. For the remaining part of my paper, I am going to show how the
sociological theoretical perspectives, in particular the conflict perspective, explains why the events in
the film happened the way they did. The three major parts of the conflict theory that I am going to be
focusing on relates to how the people with wealth and power has a major influence in society and how
they went about abusing that power that was given to them. I am ... Show more content on

They had already set their mind that these boys committed the crime and used their power to make the
boys tell them what they wanted to hear. They used their power to hold the boys at the police station
until they confessed . The boys did not know of their rights that they had and were detained for a long
period of time until they were made to believe that if they were to confess, they could go home.
Another way that criminal law was used to control the working class in the documentary is with bail.
If someone has money, they can pay for a temporary release from jail. In the film, two boys were able
to be released on bail, but three of the boys families weren t able to come up the money, so they had to
stay in jail. It is clear that if someone is of the working class, it would be difficult for them to come up
with the money because of financial issues. If someone was rich, they would be able to pay the bail or
fine without having to worry about providing food on the table or paying bills. Because of this, it
seems like these criminal laws are set up to benefit those who are wealthy and weed out those that are
poor. Those associated with the lower class are usually associated with crime and violence and
because of that, these criminal laws are targeted towards a group of people who are at a disadvantage.
In The Central Park Five, we can see that wealthy people and the authorities hold most of the power.

Effective Negotiation Conflict Resolution

Assignment Three
Part One There are several different processes, ideas, and efforts that go into the overall practices of
effective negotiation and conflict resolution. Yet no productive negotiation could be possible without
the valuable use of skills. Two types of skills can help a successful negotiator. The first type is hard
skills, which are guidelines, strategic measures, or anything that can be copied down onto paper and
taught. The second type is soft skills, which are the skills acquired through practicing negotiation that
can t necessarily be taught. To get a better idea of the definition and examples of each type of skill, it

Throughout the process problems arise that are situation specific. Knowing when one party is bluffing
or trying to trick the other party are skills that come with learning through experience. The delivery of
statements and ideas are definitely situation specific. Discussing an issue with a church group may not
be the same type of discussion that may be necessary with a theater group. Individuals respond
differently to how phrases are stated. Only through working with similar groups does a negotiator
learn how best to phrase their ideas to parties in any given situation. Learning how to best reframe a
harsh or inappropriate statement into the truth of the statement is also a soft skill that is highly
beneficial to negotiators. The only way to learn how to accomplish this difficult skill is by practicing
it. It takes years of practicing and using this skill in negotiation processes to truly learn how to
effectively hone it.
Being able to determine the best possible solution to the problem for both parties involved in a
negotiation is also something that cannot be learned. Each negotiation is going to be different and
have different circumstances. Even after years of working with groups in negotiation or mediation
situations, it is still difficult to help both sides create a mutually beneficial solution to their problem.
This is something that almost comes as a talent to negotiators. It takes a certain gift

not to look back at all, seeking only to move forward. Then there are people like me, who look back in
anger, bitterness, and sorrow. It seems that few people enjoy a pain free upbringing. In fact, the very
idea of childhood is a fairly new concept. In the early part of the last century, children were considered

Day Of The Dead ( Or All Hallows Eve
The end of October and beginning of November two very different yet also seemingly similar
celebrations take place. Halloween (or All Hallows Eve) is celebrated on October 31 in several
countries including the USA. It has its roots in pagan celebrations for the end of the harvest season,
various festivals of the dead, and the Celtic Samhain festival. Day of the Dead (or Dia de los Muertos)
is a Mexican holiday, which is also celebrated in parts of Latin America and in the U.S., to remember
and pray for family and friends who have died. It takes place on November 1. Neither of these
holidays are religious in nature, but each holds their own unique set of symbols and traditions some of
which go back hundreds of years. Both of these holidays are in place to bring the living closer to the
dead and to connect the two realms.
The origin of Dia De Los Muertos can be traced back to indigenous cultures in Mexico dating back
2,500 to 3,000 years. These cultures would hold annual rituals lasting one full month and would be
purposed to celebrate, not mourn the dead. Though the reason for celebration is the same, the length is
not. Instead of celebrating for a full month, today the celebration only lasts for a few days. During
these few days families take the time to remember the deceased. The atmosphere is not somber
however; it resembles more of a picnic or celebration. People visit the graves of the deceased at their
respective cemeteries and build private altars. The creation of

The Lewis s The Four Loves Essay
Many cruel actions in the world have been carried out in the name of love. Because of that, it s clear to
see how not all forms of love are pure. The nature of love is a prominent theme in Till We Have Faces.
All of the relationships in this book are unique there are no two alike. In every relationship, there is a
love factor. Unfortunately, in English, there are no words to distinguish different types of the love
being felt. A person can love creatures, reading, and family members, but those are all entirely
separate interpretations of the word love. In the book, The Four Loves, Lewis dissects the different
forms of love. There are many connections to be made between characters throughout Till We Have
Faces and the four different types of love: Storge, Philia, Eros, and Agape. Each of the four loves
plays a part in the plot of the story.
The first of these loves is storge. Storge, Greek for affection, is the love in which physical features do
not have importance. An example would be a love for a family member or close friend (Four Loves 31
32). In Till We Have Faces, Orual the narrator and heroine of the novel receives love from her younger
sister, Psyche. The Fox, a Greek slave and father figure, also loves Orual even though she frightens
people with her face (26). The Fox, Orual, and Psyche have a special bond. Psyche and Orual look at
the Fox as a father figure because he acts as a true grandfather towards them (21). Storge is found

Investing Of Better Health And Safety Systems
Investing in better health and safety systems requires a business case to be made (Gahan, Sievewright
and Evans, 2014). The business case seeks to establish whether investment in better health and safety
systems can provide a net economic legal, or benefit to business, irrespective of whether such
investments might also be able to generate net benefits that directly accrue to individual workers, the
business overall or the community at large (Work Safe Australia, 2014).
This essay defines what is a business case and this management tool can be used to ensure health and

The business case may also put forward alternative solutions and identifies assumptions (State of
Victoria, 2010).
The focus of the business case and the level of detail required in a business case will depend on the
size of the business, the impact to the business and the proposal itself (State of Victoria, 2010).
Health and safety is usually seen a as cost or overhead rather than an improvement to productivity or
increase in profit, therefore a health and safety business case is usually based upon one the following
justifications: legal, financial or strategic (Work Safe Australia, 2014).
Requirement for a health and safety business case
As stated there is a tendency in industry to perceive resources dedicated to health and safety systems
as expenditures rather than investments with improvements in health and safety beyond those required
to meet compliance obligations often delayed. Quality systems are easier to justify. It also remains
difficult to convince management of the benefits of investing in health and safety systems because of a
tendency to overestimate the costs associated with implementation and undervalue the costs associated
with system failure (Gahan et al., 2014; Work Safe

Analysis Of Pygmalion By George Bernard Shaw
An Analysis of the English class system in Pygmalion
Throughout the play, Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw, many of the characters represent different
social class structures. They also resemble how the higher class citizens feel threatened by the lower
class citizens. Protagonist Eliza Doolittle, Henry Higgins, and Mrs. Pearce are prime examples of
characters who portray different roles in the Victorian social structure. This play takes place during the
Victorian period in England where the upper , middle, and lower class were at different stages. This
social system was not meant for lower class to move up and down the hierarchy. If someone was born
poor they would most likely die poor. Especially women in the class system were not able to move up
in the class system without their husbands. Through the book many characters break these traditional
norms, represent the ideas of the class system, and act as a model for the upper class.
Many of the characters represent different social class structures. Eliza would be a threat to the upper
class because her intent is to move from lower to upper class. In the beginning Eliza was just a dirty
flower girl on the street with no money and Higgins says, She is no doubt as clean as she can afford to
be; but compared to the ladies she is very dirty. Her features are no worse than theirs; but their
condition leaves something to be desired; and she needs the services of a dentist (129). Here Eliza is

  • 2. Nancy Mairs Cripple Analysis Out of seven possibilities, the most common ones are Handicapped, Disabled, or Cripple. Which one did Mairs choose? In this passage Nancy Mairs, a dear woman who has multiple sclerosis openly identifies herself as a cripple , instead of handicapped or disabled. Mairs presents herself in a specific way to show why she made that word choice of cripple to name herself. Upon doing that Mairs uses rhetorical features such as tone, word choice, and rhetorical structure to further her reason. In this passage, Mairs presents herself at the outset having a candid and elegy tone. The first sentence states: I am cripple; and that right there without no further details shows the candidness of this passage. As she brings out that Cripple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. american character American Character Then and Now A notion that still holds strong today, Fredrick Jackson Turner s idea of American character was one based on trials and experiences. Unlike Crevecour, Turner believed that American character was not simply a product of English character transported to America, but rather another idea altogether (Faragher 63). He expressed this opinion the best when he said, In the crucible of the frontier the immigrants were Americanized, liberated, and fused into a mixed race, English in neither nationality nor characteristics (Faragher 64). How exactly did American character form and what defines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The combination of the Turner thesis and Peck s translation of it, provided a foundation that would help form American identity: individualism and collectivity. A perfect example of this today is the sport of baseball, America s pastime. By the time Turner presented his thesis in 1893 at the Colombian Exhibition in Chicago, the myth of the cowboy and the myth of the frontier had already made their way into novels for the enjoyment of east coasters who were curious of the west (Cullen 127). Characters like Buffalo Bill, Nathaniel (Natty) Bumpo, and Daniel Boone helped illustrated American character. The introduction of she males, women with feminine and masculine qualities, were also an important feature of these novels west (Cullen 127). Characters like Jane, from Calamity Jane by Edward L. Wheeler, were like predecessors of women rights; they were heroines who demanded and received, but remained kindhearted at the same time (Faber all). Although all of these characters had a very profound role in molding people s impression of the west, the novel which combined many individual roles of each western into one was probably The Virginian by Own Wister. This novel was so influential in helping to engrave American character in that it incorporated Turner s idea of the disappearing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... b) How the Quantum Free Electron Theory predicts that the conductivity of metals decreases as the temperature increases. In the Quantum Free Electron Theory the electrons are considered as waves, so the electrons will have much similar behaviour to waves. The temperature is related to the heat capacitance. So each element will have different heat capacitance. The Quantum Free Electron predicts that scattering causes electrons to drop back down in Energy. Which means that as the temperature goes down the stability of the electrons will increase; also the amount of electron which can jump into a higher level will decrease thus more stability in the atom. This means better conductivity in lower temperatures. So when the temperature increases, it will cause vibrations that change the lattice, and the lower level electron will get excited to move into a higher level which causes instability in the element. Thus, the conductivity will decrease. c) How the Band Theory predicts that the conductivity of silicon increases as the temperature increases. The band theory gives explanations of how Semiconductors differ from metals because as the temperature increases the conductivity increases. The Band Theory considers that for ... • 5. Explain Why Video Sports Should Be Considered Sports Should Video Games Be Considered Sports? As time moves on, things we do physically have slowly made its way to becoming electronic, such as e mail, and researching papers. Is this also the case for sports? E Sports are electronic sports, which are video games that are play at a professional level, for games such as StarCraft, League of Legends, DoTA 2, and etcetera. While the consensus of whether they are sports or not is mixed, I believe that they are not. The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another team or other individuals for entertainment. While E Sports cover the latter half of the definition, it leaves out the physical exertion of real sports. Despite that being the case, many others consider them sports. They even have their own page on the ESPN website. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... League of Legends, the world s most popular MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) has two teams of five playing against each other to destroy their opponent s base. Doing so requires great communication and knowledge of the game, something that is required in traditional sports as well. The process to join a professional team for League of Legends is similar to other sports as well. Sometimes, first, the player has to perform at a certain level to be found by a scout. Then, they have to try out amongst other players, then compete in a smaller tournament to get a spot in the big leagues. Other times, some pro teams only require a series of tryouts for the position they want to play in the game. While E Sports do meet some of the requirements of being a sport, I believe that instead of being a sport, they are just competitions. Even though they have the team and skill aspect of a sport, they still lack the physical exertion of a real sport. Maybe someday video games will reach the true definition of a sport, but that day is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. America s Rapid Industrialization During The Progressive Era As America entered the 20th century, the country entered a time period known as the Progressive Era. This era was one defined by political reform and social activism as well as myriad of problems arising from America s rapid industrialization. During the Progressive era, America faced several international, political, and social challenges that would set us on the road to the society in which we now live. During the Depression of the 1890s, the National Association of Manufacturers argued that the American economy could only expand with new foreign markets. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, over time government corruption became common. Reformers like Teddy Roosevelt in Washington and Governor Hiram Johnson in California responded to an epidemic of political and civic corruption by expanding the role of government in regulating the economy and in giving citizens, for the first time, direct access to the legislative process. The federal income tax and the direct election of senators, for example, were a part of the Populist program, and Prohibition grew from a pre‐Civil War anti‐alcohol reform tradition. In addition, muckrakers, reform minded American journalist who targeted corruption, made Americans aware of the serious failings in society and built public support for change. Exposés such as Lincoln Steffens The Shame of the Cities (1904), an attack on municipal corruption, and Ida Tarbell s History of the Standard Oil Company (1904), which chronicled John D. Rockefeller s ruthless business practices, often first appeared in the new mass circulation magazines, such as McClure s and Cosmopolitan, and were later published as books. The muckrakers impact could be powerful, as in the case of Upton Sinclair s The Jungle (1906), a book whose vivid descriptions of working and sanitary conditions in Chicago s meatpacking plants led directly to federal laws regulating the industry. • 8. Comparing Plath s The Bell Jar And Its Affiliates The Bell Jar and Its Affiliates Frequently, a writer will express the same symbols and themes in a variety of their works. This is the case with Sylvia Plath, who not only wrote a multitude of poems, but also wrote the renowned novel, The Bell Jar. Three of Plath s poems that share similar elements to her novel are Lorelei , Daddy , and The Applicant . These ideas include death beckoning the characters, an unstable family unit, and sexism towards women. The poems Lorelei , Daddy , and The Applicant can be compared to Plath s novel The Bell Jar, by examining the key themes and characteristics of the works. The first of Plath s poems that is comparable to The Bell Jar is Lorelei . In both of the works, death beckons to the characters. In Lorelei , siren like creatures beckon for the speaker to drown herself. The speaker notes how their ice hearted calling (Lorelei 31) is compelling her to commit suicide. This can be compared to the ocean waves in The Bell Jar, which [draw] back, like a hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This poem shows all of the sexist expectations of a woman that the protagonist in The Bell Jar hopes to escape. The poem objectifies women as possessions that are supposed to bring teacups and roll away headaches / and do whatever you tell them (Applicant 13 14). Esther, however, detests these ideals, refusing to learn a new way of writing as [she] hate[s] the idea of serving men in any way (Bell Jar 76). Esther also goes so far as to proclaim that she does not want to get married. She states that the last thing she want[s is] infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. [She wants] change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions [herself], like the colored arrows from a Fourth of July rocket (Bell Jar 83). • 11. Reflection Of Education As A Vocab Levels In Elementary... I m really excited to be in your class this year. We read romeo and juliet last year but only scratched the surface in terms of new vocabulary and challenging literature. This year I am optimistic that we will tackle harder books together and challenge our vocab levels. I m not too sure that I m all that exciting, but I ll try. My full name is Jackson Heath Meriwether and I was born in Columbia, South Carolina just like my parents and theirs before me. The education I ve received started in Pre k at a little private school called Harmony. From there I had elementary school at Brennen from kindergarten through 5th grade. I tried a charter school for the sciences for the first half of 6th grade and after that I ended up here at heathwood. My extracurricular activities and hobbies range from soccer, cross country, swimming, and mountain biking to gaming and watching movies. I play soccer and run cross country for heathwood and play for a challenge travel soccer team in the fall. Lately I ve also been trying to get back into guitar. Of these hobbies the one most important to me would probably be soccer since it combines a team sport with the need for an individual to excel at the same time. What I want from my education is really the ability to talk, hold a conversation, and be around every type of person from an english scholar to a mathematician. I not to picky when it comes to teaching styles and teachers, however I prefer to be challenged in class while engaging with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Influence Of Deception In Raven Black Deception is the action of betraying and letting someone down. Sometimes individuals are so caught up in the moment that they do not think about the consequences of their actions. In the novel Raven Black, deception is shown throughout the story by a murder, mystery of a missing girl, and a kidnap. The thriller Raven Black, by Ann Cleeves, takes place during the dark cold winter in January, in the Shetland Islands. In the novel, every character reveals a different mindset by their actions and thoughts. In the article, Fixed vs. Growth: The Two Basic Mindsets That Shape Our Lives, Maria Popova talks about how every individual has a different mindset. Someone with a fixed mindset assumes that they cannot change for the better and their intelligence or qualities are fixed traits. On the contrary, someone with a growth mindset enjoys a challenge, they believe they can learn from their mistakes and most importantly they know there is always room for improvement. In Raven Black, Inspector Jimmy Perez, Magnus Tait and Sally Henry show whether they have a fixed or growth mindset, which result in how they act and think throughout the novel. Inspector Jimmy Perez is a diligent and clever detective who does not settle for the first clue he notices in an investigation. In the novel Raven Black, by Ann Cleeves Inspector Perez shows he has a growth mindset, by having an open mind and not blaming Magnus Tait for the murder of Catherine Ross. First there is Flexion, which is a decrease of angles between body parts. One primary example of this would be calf raises, which cause dorsiflexion as the ankles push upwards and the toes force down. Second we have extension, which is the opposite of flexion, causing an increase in angles between body parts. The best example exercise for extension would be leg extensions, which causes movement and extension at the knee in order to stretch and strengthen the legs. Third there is abduction, the movement of the body segments away from the midline. One example of this would be hip abductor machine when the legs move ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Evaluating The Play Julius Caesar In this project we had to create a film that incorporated the play Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, by using a reality TV show. One of the very first obstacles we had went through was deciding on which reality TV to use. I had wanted to do the reality TV show called Survivor, but most of my other group members wanted to do The Kardashians. The reason I had wanted to do survivor was because I felt like it gave our film a really good structure to follow unlike The Kardashians. We easily resolved this issue by just taking a vote, which led to my group using The Kardashians. This was an example of one of our group s smaller issues. We did finally figure out some days and places that we were able to meet up. We ended up going to Barnes Nobles, Mia s house, and we also stayed after school twice. One thing that made it hard to find a day to meet up is because of one of my group members in particular, Vanessa. She was always busy and always seemed to have some type of excuse to not being able to meet up. While trying to figure out how long we were going to stay at Barnes Nobles to film we decided to stay from one pm to 5 pm and Vanessa responded by saying Well I have a life, so I don t want to stay that long . When she had made that comment everyone in my group just looked at her with a dumbfounded look. After that comment, it lead to another big issue in my group; the unreliability of Vanessa. There were many moments that made Vanessa unreliable: waiting till the last moment to do her part of the script, barely being able to make it to any of the meeting we had after school, being off task, and messing up her part of the script. • 15. To His Coy Mistress To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell is about a man s lust for a woman. The narrator uses terms like coy to describe his mistress. He also describes sex by using the word ball. The narrator also compares their love to a vegetable that is steadily growing. The narrator uses words wisely in his appeal to his lover. The narrator is trying to rush her into making a decision about loving him. The narrator called his love interest coy because she wouldn t commit to him. The definition of coy is affectedly and often flirtatiously shy or modest, the narrator seems to be growing tired of the woman not committing to him. Leaning out of the open door of the mail car, the Railway Mail Service postal clerk braved the heat or cold of the fierce wind to throw the mailbags with practiced precision onto the long, wooden station platform. The deck had been polished smooth by the bags that slid to a stop in front of the station door. A split second later, the hook on the mail car performed its magic act and scooped up the outgoing mail bag that Vern had hung from a gallows like structure at the end of the platform. The mission was supposed to highlight the third moon landing, however, the novelty of moon landing among the general public seemed to have already worn off, none of TV networks in the United States broadcast the live transmission from the Apollo 13 crew members, only a handful of family members and NASA s flight controllers actually watched it. It was like a bomb waiting to go off. The mission of Apollo 13 was literally fraught with danger; once a problem was solved, another issue cropped up and both the astronauts and the flight controllers were forced to tackle those problems one by one; putting heads together in order to safely bring the astronauts back down to Earth. • 18. Research Paper On Frederic Chopin When deciding on a composer from the romantic period to research, I realized that I didn t have much insight or knowledge on the topic. I chose Frederic Chopin using completely superficial reasoning: He is of Polish descent and so am I. I also found that most of his works were solo piano pieces, and that really appealed to me for some reason. Chopin was born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin in the small town of Zelazowa Wola, just outside of Warsaw, Poland on March 1st, 1810. His father was a French native who immigrated to Poland in 1787, and joined the Polish National Guard, severing his ties with his former homeland. In this documentary, both Park Avenue in oh so wealthy Manhattan and Park Avenue which is 10 minutes away and located in the Bronx are compared and contrasted. Why would they do this? Well, people who own apartments at 740 Park Avenue make up America s ruling class while the people who live on Park Avenue in the South Bronx make up the poorest congressional district in the United States . In America, the rich continue to become wealthier while the poor continue to struggle, dividing them into different subcultures. Great isn t it? It all basically comes down to the socioeconomic status of these people. In the opening of this documentary, the first shots are of the beautiful buildings, expensive cars, and even white gloved doorman standing outside, all of the materialistic things. This is the life that most wish to live. The media even will try to persuade people that this is the dream , the life that everyone works towards and wants to live. In reality though, can most people even consider this goal attainable? This is the question that director Alex Gibney visits and revisits multiple times within this documentary. • 23. Role Of Doctors And The Medical System In Mrs Dalloway Doctors and The Medical System in Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Dalloway is a piece of literature that helped to push forward a culture of writing that she felt was otherwise stuck. Along with a style that transcended how people thought about telling a story, was the commentary. The story is riddled with commentary on politics, society, war, class, and the medical system. Virginia Woolf lets her worldviews bleed into her writing in a way that is somehow both subtle and also still direct. She lets the characters have their own experiences and dialogue, which show her views from different perspectives and without just coming out and saying it. The commentary that this is most evident in is Woolf s commentary on doctors and the medical system as a whole. Throughout Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf shows the incompetence of doctors and the medical system through Clarissa and Septimus s interactions with them. As the novel unfolds you begin to see more of the commentary on the medical system leak into the story. When the novel begins, Clarissa is leaving to go out for a walk around the town. Clarissa hasn t been able to get out as much as she has liked because she has struggled with her own illnesses that have kept her presumably somewhat bed ridden. Although Clarissa s interactions with the doctors in this story are not necessarily direct, it is made known that she has at least some distain for the time in her life that she was struggling with her health. ... With no body, no evidence of motive and no eyewitness evidence that even vaguely incriminated the Chamberlains, the Crown case was wholly circumstantial, and supported in the main by the claims of expert witnesses to the effect that the state of Azaria s clothing was inconsistent with a dingo attack, that there was a bloody handprint on the jumpsuit; and that substantial quantities of blood, including the blood of an infant, had been found throughout the Chamberlain car. There were many problems with the methods and findings of these witnesses, only some of which, however, could be effectively communicated to a jury in a criminal trial. The Crown invited the jury to infer that in a space of five to ten minutes, during which Lindy returned to the tent with the baby and six year old Aidan, she had cut Azaria s throat and stuffed the body into Michael s camera case while her son apparently stood by. She had then raced Aidan back to the barbecue area, where normal life was resumed, and displayed no signs of unease or distress until the opportunity presented itself of blaming a dingo for the baby s disappearance. The Chamberlains were said to have later buried the body, then exhumed it so that the clothing could be placed in a strategic location to lend further credibility to the dingo tale. The Central Park Five Is A Documentary By Ken Burns About The Central Park Five is a documentary by Ken Burns about five young black men who were wrongfully convicted of a crime they did not commit. This documentary focused on showing how these boys got convicted, why they got convicted, the effects and response from the public of their convictions, and their release. For the remaining part of my paper, I am going to show how the sociological theoretical perspectives, in particular the conflict perspective, explains why the events in the film happened the way they did. The three major parts of the conflict theory that I am going to be focusing on relates to how the people with wealth and power has a major influence in society and how they went about abusing that power that was given to them. I am ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They had already set their mind that these boys committed the crime and used their power to make the boys tell them what they wanted to hear. They used their power to hold the boys at the police station until they confessed . The boys did not know of their rights that they had and were detained for a long period of time until they were made to believe that if they were to confess, they could go home. Another way that criminal law was used to control the working class in the documentary is with bail. If someone has money, they can pay for a temporary release from jail. In the film, two boys were able to be released on bail, but three of the boys families weren t able to come up the money, so they had to stay in jail. It is clear that if someone is of the working class, it would be difficult for them to come up with the money because of financial issues. If someone was rich, they would be able to pay the bail or fine without having to worry about providing food on the table or paying bills. Because of this, it seems like these criminal laws are set up to benefit those who are wealthy and weed out those that are poor. Those associated with the lower class are usually associated with crime and violence and because of that, these criminal laws are targeted towards a group of people who are at a disadvantage. In The Central Park Five, we can see that wealthy people and the authorities hold most of the power. The people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Effective Negotiation Conflict Resolution Tamaris Purvines Assignment Three LDR 404 07/29/2012 Assignment Three Part One There are several different processes, ideas, and efforts that go into the overall practices of effective negotiation and conflict resolution. Yet no productive negotiation could be possible without the valuable use of skills. Two types of skills can help a successful negotiator. The first type is hard skills, which are guidelines, strategic measures, or anything that can be copied down onto paper and taught. The second type is soft skills, which are the skills acquired through practicing negotiation that can t necessarily be taught. To get a better idea of the definition and examples of each type of skill, it is better to discuss them each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the process problems arise that are situation specific. Knowing when one party is bluffing or trying to trick the other party are skills that come with learning through experience. The delivery of statements and ideas are definitely situation specific. Discussing an issue with a church group may not be the same type of discussion that may be necessary with a theater group. Individuals respond differently to how phrases are stated. Only through working with similar groups does a negotiator learn how best to phrase their ideas to parties in any given situation. Learning how to best reframe a harsh or inappropriate statement into the truth of the statement is also a soft skill that is highly beneficial to negotiators. The only way to learn how to accomplish this difficult skill is by practicing it. It takes years of practicing and using this skill in negotiation processes to truly learn how to effectively hone it. Being able to determine the best possible solution to the problem for both parties involved in a negotiation is also something that cannot be learned. Each negotiation is going to be different and have different circumstances. Even after years of working with groups in negotiation or mediation situations, it is still difficult to help both sides create a mutually beneficial solution to their problem. This is something that almost comes as a talent to negotiators. It takes a certain gift ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Pain into Beauty Essay Pain into Beauty People look back on their childhoods in different ways. Some see it as a time of joy and laughter, love and learning. Many feel a bittersweet mixture of happy nostalgia, and painful moments. Some prefer not to look back at all, seeking only to move forward. Then there are people like me, who look back in anger, bitterness, and sorrow. It seems that few people enjoy a pain free upbringing. In fact, the very idea of childhood is a fairly new concept. In the early part of the last century, children were considered miniature adults, and were expected to act that way. Abuse, as defined today, was ignored and sometimes encouraged. Spare the rod and spoil the child. Today, abuse is carefully defined and is illegal, but many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So he turned to an old friend for help. She agreed to raise me, and four years later she and my father married. My new step mother was now, for all intents and purposes, my mother. I called her Mommy, and later Mom, and at first all was well. We moved to Denver, Colorado during my first year of life, into a duplex. It was a very small house, painted a deep blue. It is in this house that my best memories were made. They are of course very hazy, as I was only three or four, but there are no unhappy times at this point. I was the only child in my immediate family, and so was doted upon by every auntie and uncle, by every granny and grandpa. I was the little queen of my little world. At that point in time holidays were the best. I was showered in gifts and clothing, and love. I consider this time, from the age of zero to five, as being the best years of my life even if they are a bit hazy. At the age of five I was a vibrant, joyful ball of energy. Everything was an adventure, even breaking my collar bone. I loved my life and my family. But once again tragedy struck and this time it struck my step mother. Her mother had been battling lung cancer, and she could no longer fight. My step mother was devastated, and I now believe this may have been the beginning of my problems. She began to change, in subtle ways. Her patience was far less, and nothing I did was right. She cried more often, and would become angry for no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Day Of The Dead ( Or All Hallows Eve The end of October and beginning of November two very different yet also seemingly similar celebrations take place. Halloween (or All Hallows Eve) is celebrated on October 31 in several countries including the USA. It has its roots in pagan celebrations for the end of the harvest season, various festivals of the dead, and the Celtic Samhain festival. Day of the Dead (or Dia de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday, which is also celebrated in parts of Latin America and in the U.S., to remember and pray for family and friends who have died. It takes place on November 1. Neither of these holidays are religious in nature, but each holds their own unique set of symbols and traditions some of which go back hundreds of years. Both of these holidays are in place to bring the living closer to the dead and to connect the two realms. The origin of Dia De Los Muertos can be traced back to indigenous cultures in Mexico dating back 2,500 to 3,000 years. These cultures would hold annual rituals lasting one full month and would be purposed to celebrate, not mourn the dead. Though the reason for celebration is the same, the length is not. Instead of celebrating for a full month, today the celebration only lasts for a few days. During these few days families take the time to remember the deceased. The atmosphere is not somber however; it resembles more of a picnic or celebration. People visit the graves of the deceased at their respective cemeteries and build private altars. • 38. The Lewis s The Four Loves Essay Many cruel actions in the world have been carried out in the name of love. Because of that, it s clear to see how not all forms of love are pure. The nature of love is a prominent theme in Till We Have Faces. All of the relationships in this book are unique there are no two alike. In every relationship, there is a love factor. Unfortunately, in English, there are no words to distinguish different types of the love being felt. A person can love creatures, reading, and family members, but those are all entirely separate interpretations of the word love. In the book, The Four Loves, Lewis dissects the different forms of love. There are many connections to be made between characters throughout Till We Have Faces and the four different types of love: Storge, Philia, Eros, and Agape. Each of the four loves plays a part in the plot of the story. The first of these loves is storge. Storge, Greek for affection, is the love in which physical features do not have importance. An example would be a love for a family member or close friend (Four Loves 31 32). In Till We Have Faces, Orual the narrator and heroine of the novel receives love from her younger sister, Psyche. The Fox, a Greek slave and father figure, also loves Orual even though she frightens people with her face (26). The Fox, Orual, and Psyche have a special bond. Psyche and Orual look at the Fox as a father figure because he acts as a true grandfather towards them (21). Storge is found between the three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The business case seeks to establish whether investment in better health and safety systems can provide a net economic legal, or benefit to business, irrespective of whether such investments might also be able to generate net benefits that directly accrue to individual workers, the business overall or the community at large (Work Safe Australia, 2014). The business case may also put forward alternative solutions and identifies assumptions (State of Victoria, 2010). The focus of the business case and the level of detail required in a business case will depend on the size of the business, the impact to the business and the proposal itself (State of Victoria, 2010). Health and safety is usually seen a as cost or overhead rather than an improvement to productivity or increase in profit, therefore a health and safety business case is usually based upon one the following justifications: legal, financial or strategic (Work Safe Australia, 2014). Quality systems are easier to justify. It also remains difficult to convince management of the benefits of investing in health and safety systems because of a tendency to overestimate the costs associated with implementation and undervalue the costs associated with system failure (Gahan et al., 2014; Work Safe ... • 40. Analysis Of Pygmalion By George Bernard Shaw An Analysis of the English class system in Pygmalion Throughout the play, Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw, many of the characters represent different social class structures. They also resemble how the higher class citizens feel threatened by the lower class citizens. Protagonist Eliza Doolittle, Henry Higgins, and Mrs. Pearce are prime examples of characters who portray different roles in the Victorian social structure. This play takes place during the Victorian period in England where the upper , middle, and lower class were at different stages. This social system was not meant for lower class to move up and down the hierarchy. If someone was born poor they would most likely die poor. Especially women in the class system were not able to move up in the class system without their husbands. Through the book many characters break these traditional norms, represent the ideas of the class system, and act as a model for the upper class. Many of the characters represent different social class structures. Eliza would be a threat to the upper class because her intent is to move from lower to upper class. In the beginning Eliza was just a dirty flower girl on the street with no money and Higgins says, She is no doubt as clean as she can afford to be; but compared to the ladies she is very dirty. Her features are no worse than theirs; but their condition leaves something to be desired; and she needs the services of a dentist (129). Here Eliza is the lowest of the low. She ...
