Railway engineering deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of railway tracks to safely and efficiently move trains. It includes ballast which is granular material packed around sleepers to transmit load to the foundation. Rails are rolled steel sections laid end to end in parallel lines over sleepers. Sleepers are members laid transverse to the rails to transfer load from rails to ballast and subgrade. Points of crossing and switching allow trains to move between different routes and tracks. There are different types of rails and sleepers used in railway track construction.
