You are about to write an essay on
Terrorism.
Your teacher will tell you how to present it: either
as a speech, or as a report, or as a simple essay.
Your teacher will also tell you who is going to read
it and who you are writing it for: the School
Governors, the paper, the TV, a meeting with
parents and other teachers...
How?
● You will be given a selection of extracts from a
book.
● Read the selection.
● Then use the stimulus questions to research
the internet.
Why?
● Terrorism is a big thing today.
● Why is this? You need to think about that: here
are some (not all) the answers.
● How much risk is there to us today?
● Other questions are asked in the selection.
You have read it once, now what?
● Use the internet to research the questions in
italics.
● You do not have to work through all of them: it
is your essay. You choose.
● Write down the answers as you find them.
● Copying and pasting is dangerous: in A level it
can often be traced very easily. If you do want
to do it, then use these: “...” and say where it
comes from.
A Helpful Fable:
● A man wanted to catch a troublesome horse.
● He started off in pursuit, but the horse easily
escaped, making him look very silly.
● Then he put some poison down and the horse
ignored it.
● A friend advised him to put some nice rich hay
down. Guess what? The horse came trotting
back.
● If you are horrid, you won't get the horse.
Some hints:
● If it bores you, it will bore everyone. Terrorism is
not a boring subject. If you make it boring, you
have only yourself to blame.
● Avoid cynicism and jokes and sarcasm.
● When you have finished, why not give it to a
friend to read through to see what they think of
it? You, of course, can read theirs!
● The internet tells the truth, however hard that
may be. Please do be prepared for some
terrible pictures, silly remarks and horrid
people. Try and be civilized - and kind.
Now for writing it all down.
● Introduction: Say what terrorism is and what
you intend to say about the subject. (Not more
than 150 words)
● Three paragraphs. Think of all your stuff, divide
it into three pieces. At the start of each
paragraph write a topic sentence on what the
paragraph is going to be about. In the selection
the topic sentence is in bold italics.
● Write a summary at the end to say what you
personally think yourself. (Not more than 150
words).
Now for writing it all down.

RADICALISATION The task

  • 1.
  • 2. You are about to write an essay on Terrorism. Your teacher will tell you how to present it: either as a speech, or as a report, or as a simple essay. Your teacher will also tell you who is going to read it and who you are writing it for: the School Governors, the paper, the TV, a meeting with parents and other teachers...
  • 3. How? ● You will be given a selection of extracts from a book. ● Read the selection. ● Then use the stimulus questions to research the internet.
  • 4. Why? ● Terrorism is a big thing today. ● Why is this? You need to think about that: here are some (not all) the answers. ● How much risk is there to us today? ● Other questions are asked in the selection.
  • 5. You have read it once, now what? ● Use the internet to research the questions in italics. ● You do not have to work through all of them: it is your essay. You choose. ● Write down the answers as you find them. ● Copying and pasting is dangerous: in A level it can often be traced very easily. If you do want to do it, then use these: “...” and say where it comes from.
  • 6. A Helpful Fable: ● A man wanted to catch a troublesome horse. ● He started off in pursuit, but the horse easily escaped, making him look very silly. ● Then he put some poison down and the horse ignored it. ● A friend advised him to put some nice rich hay down. Guess what? The horse came trotting back. ● If you are horrid, you won't get the horse.
  • 7. Some hints: ● If it bores you, it will bore everyone. Terrorism is not a boring subject. If you make it boring, you have only yourself to blame. ● Avoid cynicism and jokes and sarcasm. ● When you have finished, why not give it to a friend to read through to see what they think of it? You, of course, can read theirs! ● The internet tells the truth, however hard that may be. Please do be prepared for some terrible pictures, silly remarks and horrid people. Try and be civilized - and kind.
  • 8. Now for writing it all down. ● Introduction: Say what terrorism is and what you intend to say about the subject. (Not more than 150 words) ● Three paragraphs. Think of all your stuff, divide it into three pieces. At the start of each paragraph write a topic sentence on what the paragraph is going to be about. In the selection the topic sentence is in bold italics. ● Write a summary at the end to say what you personally think yourself. (Not more than 150 words).
