GCSE Government and Politics: Resource Pack
Political Parties in a Democracy
This pack has been developed to help support the teaching and learning of Political Parties in a
Democracy which is part of Unit One in GCSE Government and Politics.
This Resource Pack contains two activities which could be used to support the teaching of
Political Parties in a Democracy. For each activity, you will find teacher guidance and
instructions for students. Some brief background information for each activity is also provided
for students.
Introduction
What does it mean to say that someone’s views are right wing or left wing? The terms are used
repeatedly in the media but what exactly is meant by them? The aim of these activities is to
broaden students’ understanding of the terms and to investigate the left and right wing views of
Northern Ireland’s political parties.
Activity One: Political Ideology Questionnaire
This activity relates to the Traditional Left and Right Wing Views element of the unit. The aim
of this activity is that students should participate in the design of a questionnaire, intended to
assess whether someone’s political views are more right or left wing. The design process is
intended to develop students’ understanding of the concepts of left and right wing through
considering a range of specific statements and then creating a range of possible responses to the
statements.
Instructions for students
• You are part of a group responsible for designing a questionnaire.
• The questionnaire will assess individuals’ political views and whether they are right
or left wing.
• Your teacher will provide you with a list of statements about political issues.
• Your group must design a set of four responses to each statement that reflect a
range of views from right to left wing.
• Responses must be given a value: the most right wing answer is a 1 and the most
left wing is 4.
• Create your questionnaire in a hard copy form or make use of a free app such as
Surveys for iPad.
• After people have completed the questionnaire their answers can be added up to
see whether their views are more to the left or right.
• Try it out on non-politics students.
2
Exemplar question with weightings: Generally speaking, do you believe individuals
are:
1. Generally prone to evil acts (1).
2. Weak and irrational (2).
3. Mostly good (3).
4. Good but corrupted by capitalist society (4).
Political statements
• The monarchy is a positive feature of British society and should be retained.
• Individuals should be able to pass on all their wealth to their children.
• The wealthy make an enormous contribution to society through creating jobs and
paying taxes.
• Individuals should be free to pay for private health care if they can afford it.
• Much greater control over migration into the UK is needed.
• The UK needs strong defence forces including its own nuclear weapons.
• Scottish independence would be bad for the UK and Scotland.
• Those who can afford it should be free to have their children privately educated.
• The UK should put its interests first in all circumstances.
Alternatively, teachers may wish to tailor this activity to use if in a “Four Corners” exercise with
students.
3
Activity Two: Party Political Broadcast
This activity relates to the Policies of the Political Parties in Northern Ireland element of the
unit. The aim of the activity is to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the policies
of the largest political parties in Northern Ireland by designing and recording a Party Political
Broadcast for a designated party. Such broadcasts are used by parties in the run-up to elections
to inform voters of the party’s policies and to try to gain the support of voters.
Instructions to Students
• The class will be divided into five groups.
• Each group will be allocated one of the major parties in Northern Ireland.
• Your task is to design a Party Political Broadcast (PPB) for your party showing its
policies on the economy, education, the environment and immigration.
• Information on your party’s policies can be gained from its website, manifestos or
from questioning an MLA or MP.
• Script your PPB and record it using a video app or with the help of Moving Image
Arts students.
Guidance for Teachers
• Students need to be introduced to what a PPB is in terms of style and structure.
• Examples from the 2016 UK General Election available at:
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=2016+Party+Political+Broadcasts&qs=n&fo
rm=QBVLPG&pq=2016+party+political+broadcasts&sc=0-15&sp=-1&sk=
• Students will need guidance on how to access party policies.
• This may be an appropriate time to invite a local MLA or MP to visit the school to
allow them to be questioned on party policies.
• Students can use Adobe Spark Video to create a PPB combining images, music, text
and speech.
• Alternatively, if possible, Moving Image Arts students can be involved in filming and
editing the PPB.

  • 1. CCEA GCSE Resource Pack Government and Politics Political Parties in a Democracy GCSE For first teaching from September 2017
  • 2.
  • 3. 1 GCSE Government and Politics: Resource Pack Political Parties in a Democracy This pack has been developed to help support the teaching and learning of Political Parties in a Democracy which is part of Unit One in GCSE Government and Politics. This Resource Pack contains two activities which could be used to support the teaching of Political Parties in a Democracy. For each activity, you will find teacher guidance and instructions for students. Some brief background information for each activity is also provided for students. Introduction What does it mean to say that someone’s views are right wing or left wing? The terms are used repeatedly in the media but what exactly is meant by them? The aim of these activities is to broaden students’ understanding of the terms and to investigate the left and right wing views of Northern Ireland’s political parties. Activity One: Political Ideology Questionnaire This activity relates to the Traditional Left and Right Wing Views element of the unit. The aim of this activity is that students should participate in the design of a questionnaire, intended to assess whether someone’s political views are more right or left wing. The design process is intended to develop students’ understanding of the concepts of left and right wing through considering a range of specific statements and then creating a range of possible responses to the statements. Instructions for students • You are part of a group responsible for designing a questionnaire. • The questionnaire will assess individuals’ political views and whether they are right or left wing. • Your teacher will provide you with a list of statements about political issues. • Your group must design a set of four responses to each statement that reflect a range of views from right to left wing. • Responses must be given a value: the most right wing answer is a 1 and the most left wing is 4. • Create your questionnaire in a hard copy form or make use of a free app such as Surveys for iPad. • After people have completed the questionnaire their answers can be added up to see whether their views are more to the left or right. • Try it out on non-politics students.
  • 4. 2 Exemplar question with weightings: Generally speaking, do you believe individuals are: 1. Generally prone to evil acts (1). 2. Weak and irrational (2). 3. Mostly good (3). 4. Good but corrupted by capitalist society (4). • 5. 3 Activity Two: Party Political Broadcast This activity relates to the Policies of the Political Parties in Northern Ireland element of the unit. The aim of the activity is to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the policies of the largest political parties in Northern Ireland by designing and recording a Party Political Broadcast for a designated party. Such broadcasts are used by parties in the run-up to elections to inform voters of the party’s policies and to try to gain the support of voters. Instructions to Students • The class will be divided into five groups. • Each group will be allocated one of the major parties in Northern Ireland. • Your task is to design a Party Political Broadcast (PPB) for your party showing its policies on the economy, education, the environment and immigration. • Information on your party’s policies can be gained from its website, manifestos or from questioning an MLA or MP. • Script your PPB and record it using a video app or with the help of Moving Image Arts students. Guidance for Teachers • Students need to be introduced to what a PPB is in terms of style and structure. • Examples from the 2016 UK General Election available at: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=2016+Party+Political+Broadcasts&qs=n&fo rm=QBVLPG&pq=2016+party+political+broadcasts&sc=0-15&sp=-1&sk= • Students will need guidance on how to access party policies. • This may be an appropriate time to invite a local MLA or MP to visit the school to allow them to be questioned on party policies. • Students can use Adobe Spark Video to create a PPB combining images, music, text and speech. • Alternatively, if possible, Moving Image Arts students can be involved in filming and editing the PPB.
