The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. Q1: Of these options, which do you perceive
to be the most unattractive for a guy?
As a group, we had a discussion about
how we thought the male character in
our documentary should be presented.
We agreed that these four options
would be the best to choose from.
As a result of the questionnaire, we
established that wearing crocs and
socks would be the best way to
portray our character of ‘Finn’, in an
unattractive manner. We will consider
this strongly when we start the filming
of the bad date that Finn will have
with Dalia.
3. Q2: What is the best location for
a date?
We had a debate about whether it is
professional enough to film a date as a
picnic, and what we could include in
that picnic to make it look like a proper
date.
In the end we decided that a date in a
restaurant is the most civilised and
realistic place for a date. This was
reinforced by just under 53% of the
audience that answered our
questionnaire.
We are still to decide whether it is
practical enough for us to film in a
restaurant.
4. Q3: Would you enjoy a section in the
documentary where a professional explores the
reasoning behind a person’s awkwardness?
The reasoning behind this question
was to get an idea of whether or not
we should get an psychologist to talk
about the psychology involved in
dating.
Consequently, we discovered that it is
a good idea to include this in the 5
minutes of our documentary because
it provides an added interest for the
audience.
5. Q4: How many failed dates
should we show?
We thought it would be best to
ask an audience about how
many dates they think we
should include in our
documentary, bearing in mind
the part we show is only the first
5 minutes of the episode.
Showing 2 failed dates in our
documentary came out as the
majority. We will make the final
decision on whether we should
show 1 or 2 but these answers
have allowed us to be confident
we are on the right track.
6. Q5: How should we depict a character with
no friends in terms of camera shots and
editing ideas?
We thought of various ideas that
would portray Finn in an
awkward and lonely character.
The questionnaire allowed us to
determine that a time-lapse would
be the best way of connoting this.
Finn sitting in a free period, or
even at break would be the best
time to do this because there
would be a lot of people his age
around and would show that he is
an awkward person to go up and
talk to and as a result, is generally
avoided by people.
7. Q6: Rank in order of importance,
the elements of an awkward date.
Our thoughts behind this were that
we wanted to get a better idea of
what other people would find
awkward if they were to watch a
date in a documentary.
As shown by the graph, talking
during the date is considered
perfectly normal and would not be
awkward. Bad manners and
Lydia’s facial expressions are both
considered equally awkward but
none more awkward than awkward
silences.
8. Q7: Would it be interesting to see an expert
go through the character’s wardrobe?
We are contemplating having a
scene where we ‘hire an expert’
to go through Finn’s wardrobe
and have a look at his fashion
taste and help him improve it for
his next date.
Almost 80%, a significant
proportion, of the audience felt
that this would be a great idea
and would be a beneficiary to
our documentary.
9. Q8: How much of our character’s
failed date(s) should be show?
We were undecided on how long to
show for the date(s) that we film.
Over half of the audience felt that
we should show 1 and a half
minutes of the date(s). After
looking at these results, we will
make a decision on this, whilst
taking into account this does
depend on how many dates we
show. If we show 1 date then 1 and
a half minutes might be reasonable.
However, if we show 2 dates, we
may opt to show somewhere
around a minute because otherwise
the audience may start to lose
interest.
10. Q9: What should the job title of our
‘last episode’s’ female character be?
We were originally favouring the
‘teacher’ job title but we were not
100% certain.
As expected, lawyer and teacher are
the 2 favourites but we think that a
teacher is a more realistic person for
our documentary. One of the reasons
for this is the fact that lawyers often
work long hours and therefore
lawyers at the age we were showing
wouldn’t have much time to be going
on dates.
11. Q10: The part of the documentary that we are filming
will end with the beginning of our character’s next
date. How should we leave it in suspense?
Our aim for this question was to get an
idea for what people, of the age that we
are targeting for the production of our
film, think would keep them intrigued
and desperate to watch the rest of the
episode after the advertisement break.
Gladly, the majority of the audience
agreed that showing our character
sitting down and the door being opened
and a girl walking in but only being able
to see her legs, would be the best way to
keep an audience interested. This will
hopefully be both because they want to
see who the girl is, but also they want to
see how he gets on after being helped
out my experts.
