Who would be the audience for your media product?
How did you attract/address your audience?
Core Target Audience ProfileOur core target audience demographic is
15-24 year olds, generally male and no
specifics on the ethnicity of the audience.
This would be the audience that would
enjoy our production the most and would
create the most revenue for us. When
marketing the film we carefully need to
consider the demographic and
psychographic of the audience. Overall the
needs of the audience would be very
generic.
This audience would tend to be those going
through school and in the early stages of
their careers, this would make their
preferences relatively similar. They would
enjoy gaming and are the start of the online
generation. Thus they would be attracted
to films that have a large marketing
campaign through viral marketing as they
spend a lot of time on their phones and
computers.
Other films that are audience would
enjoy would generally be the same
genre, such as paranormal activity. Also
they would enjoy genres such as thriller
and gangster films due to their highly
visceral nature., which fits their needs
when it comes to media content due to
video games such as Call Of Duty due to
the gore element of it which would also
mean they’d enjoy series such as
Walking Dead and Game Of Thrones.
The core audience would mainly consume
the content at home as the only times that
they’d visit the cinema would be to watch
blockbusters. This is mainly down to the
buzz around certain films due to horrors
relying on the core audience or regular
cinema goers, as they don’t have as large
marketing budgets as the blockbuster films.
Also they won't have as much disposable
income to visit the cinema every week as it
can cost around £10 every time.
How did you test your concept and sequence to
an audience throughout the process?
Throughout the process we compiled firstly a
questionnaire, to test our in initial concept on a
focus group. We used mainly male teenagers in
this questionnaire which is the main target
audience for horror films. The results we got were
satisfying enough to make us not have to change
much.
After the initial questionnaire, we then pitched
our concept to the class. For this, we compiled
a prezi presentation which allowed to express
our ideas visually.
After the pitch we then got on with filming our
main piece. During the process of filming, we
created a rough cut of our horror film. We then
presented the rough cut to the rest of the class.
This allowed members of the class to give
feedback on our pieces, which helped us change
things to make a much better production. Then
our final cut was placed on YouTube ready to
screen to a selected audience.
The gory nature of the death
would help the audience relate to
the murders as it’s a lot like
other films of the genre where
gore is involved
The character is
very stock of
horror, also as the
actor is 16 years of
age and the core
audience are 15-24
for horror it would
enable them to
relate to the
character causing
unease amongst the
audience trying to
work out who
killed who
As this generation has grown
up with smokers it will mean
that they're able to relate to the
smoking character from the
start of the scene
Also the actor is
clearly the
antagonist and
by having the
antagonist as
female creates
unease amongst
the audience as
they question
this character
choice in
relation to other
horror
productions
Both characters
in the
interrogation
scene are
younger than
those in the
average horror
production so it
causes the
audience to
question the
choice of cast
At the same
time as the two
actors look as
if they're
similar ages it
creates a
connection
between them
outside of their
actions
The audience,
as they're
similar ages
will be able to
relate to cast
selection
The choice of
weapon is vital in
connecting to the
audience. The
knife connects the
production to
those of
Halloween and
other horror films
where by
gruesome
murders take
place
The rule of thirds
show the body as
the focus of the
shot. So, with the
knife in focus and
the body in focus
by the rule of
thirds, creates a
real connection
between the two.
This will make the
audience believe
that it was either a
murder or suicide.
The jump
scare at the
end of the
production
will cause the
audience to
feel a visceral
effect from the
piece. Which
in most cases
is what the
audience looks
for when
watching a
film, especially
a horror film
Most of the
production has
been very calm
up to this point
besides the
flashbacks so this
comes as a big
shock.
When we did the pitch our idea was extremely different. We had the idea of the
time period being the 1960’s. we were told that this was quite pointless after our
pitch so we didn’t pursue it, it also didn’t add anything specifically to the story
and wasn’t conventional of the horror genre. More issues after the pitch were
locations and actors however we did manage to work these issues out. We were
also advised to change the style so that it was more noir which we did so that
had a big impact on our final piece. Overall the rough cut feedback was quite
significant and varied as there were quite a few changes we had to make to our
plans to make it a more good piece.
After our rough cut we had to lengthen our piece because there simply wasn’t
enough content and it was too short. This raised issues because we couldn’t use
the same location so we had to shoot more interrogation scenes in the school
drama studio. To ensure that enigma was constructed we had to make sure the
two locations looked as if they were the same. This also ensured that continuity
was preserved throughout the piece. Another point from the rough cut was that
some of the shots were quite shaky so we had to sort them out when we edited
out footage. The parts that were included in the rough cut stayed the same other
than this we mostly just added to them afterwards to ensure that we had enough
content.

Audience Research Results
Question Results
1) Who killed the detective? The answer we were looking for was the
husband. Most people understood that the
husband was the murderer, however some got
confused, some were unsure of the exact identity
of the murderer, some stating that it was a friend
of the murderer.
2) What is Miss Rose being
questioned for?
This seemed to be a point of confusion. There
were differing answers when it came to this
question. Only one person understood that Miss
Rose was being questioned for the murder of
Ollie, where as half were under the impression
that Miss Rose had murdered her husband or her
husband had disappeared. The rest understood
that she was being questioned over a murder.
3)Who do you think the male
character is?
We were looking to see if the audience
understood who the male was. 83% of people
said he was a detective, however some were
confused by the question we were asking.
Question Results
4) Were you confused by the plot? All of those surveyed said that they were not
confused by the plot. One stating that it
seemed pretty straightforward.
5) What was your favourite part? Half of the resultants stated that their
favourite part was the flashback scene where
Ollie is lying dead. Others stated that the
ending was good and the alleyway scenes.
6) What was your least favourite part? Half of the results said that they had no least
favourite part. However, one person stated
that the beginning part with the cigarette was
unnecessary. Another person said that their
least favourite part was the part where they
showed the knife outside and two people said
the dialogue was poor.
7) On a scale of 1-10 how well did you
understand the plot?
From the scale we could determine that all
people surveyed had a very good
understanding of the plot. 100% of results
were from 7-10 .
8) How tense was the movie on a scale from
1-10?
These results tended to be in the middle of
the scale ranging from 5-8.
Question Results
9) How would you describe this
opening in three words?
Most gave answers to describe the
movie as edgy and tense
10) How would you describe the pace
of the film?
All said the cutting pace was just right
11) Would you recommend this film? All said yes
Audience Research after the screening
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zQDJwLVu7U
Did your screening show that you
were successful?
 Overall, we were very pleased with the results
of our screening. However, it seemed we could
have done more so the audience understood the
plot a bit more. Although, all of the people we
surveyed said they would recommend the film.
Another part that was confusing to some was
who was the person who killed the detective.
We could have hinted that it was the husband a
bit more than we did. However, overall the
audience enjoyed it and therefore it was a
success.
