WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED
FROM YOUR AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK?
 Once we had specified who our target audience would be we planned around the elements which we could
include in a 15 rated film. When planning our film we decided to give our film a 15 certificate as 12A couldn't show
drug use which we intended to put in, however it never made the final cut. Although our film hasn't got drug use I
personally still feel that is 15 certificate as it hint towards death and has a complicated storyline. Our target audience
is both males and females, at the average age between 15-25 as the teenage characters and storyline would mainly
entertain the audience in that range. We also aimed our film at British people, specifically northern people due to the
location and accents in the film, this will make it relate-able for the British audience as they can connect as the film is
located in Yorkshire.
 Films that attract a similar audience in the same genre, could be Girl, Interrupted, Silence of the Lambs and
Butterfly Effect. They all have conventions of psychological thrillers and I would typically associate them with a
similar age range to our film.
After that we conducted a Video Questionnaire and an Online questionnaire for our
storyline, in which we asked the public a few questions to see what they thought
about our initial idea. We asked them these questions:
 What genre do you think this film is? e.g. Horror/Thriller/
 Do you like the storyline?
 Do you think it sounds similar to any other films? If so which films does it
sound similar to?
 What certificate do you think this film would be?
 Would you go and see this film at the cinema?
 If you wanted to buy this on DVD how much would you like to pay for it?
 Would you make any improvements to this film?
 When we set up these questions we made sure we would get a specific answer as it was just about our storyline, we
wanted to see how the target audience reacted to the storyline and see if they would improve anything. In our results we
found that a variety of people compared our film to Girl, Interrupted and Orphan which were expected due to the narrative
and genre of our film. Majority of the people we asked said they would rate it 15 in which we was happy with that response
as we was on the verge of giving it a 12A certificate, however it shows we gave it the appropriate rating. We was very happy
with the people who answered the online questionnaire as the age range was 15-19 which we already knew it would
specifically interest teenagers due to the teenage actors. In the video questionnaire, our main downfall was people said the
storyline seemed too confusing, however they would go and buy it on DVD to see if it was edited well to make it less
confusing. As most people said they would go and see it in the cinema and spend about £6-£10 on DVD shows that it would
be successful in both as if it got a good response and review in cinemas then money would also be made through DVD sales,
in which shows we could promote our film through different media platforms.
 As a large percentage of the public said they would buy the film and go watch it, this gave us
the confidence. Also most people gave us a high rating for the storyline as there were four people
that gave it a 10 rating, however there were the unfortunate rating of a 3. However we didn't get
disheartened by it, as we still collected a lot of information about what genre the audience
thought it would be. Although nobody specified the sub genre Psychological thriller in our online
questionnaire, most people did put 'Thriller' or 'Mystery' in which we was expecting. This shows
we developed our plot and storyline to fit conventions of the genre and we did want to add the
element of mystery in which we knew people would put it under that category. The majority of
the responses and feedback helped us get an insight on how the audience would want us to
produce our film just by telling them our initial storyline.
 When it came to producing our film, we took into consideration the feedback from the
audience, as we wanted to interpret their opinions in the film. As our main concern from the
feedback was the complicated storyline, we carefully planned how we would film certain shots
and how we would edit these shots to make the narrative clear and easy to understand for the
audience. We concentrated on mise-en-scene, editing, cinematography and our main focus was
scripting and audio. We felt that the letter from the mother is the main part of the film in which
we wanted the audience to sympathise for the two sisters that are grieving over their mother.
Also the conversation at the end is crucial in our storyline in which the nurse reveals Katherine's
secret. We distinctively put our characters in costumes to define their personalities and positions
in the film which makes it less confusing.
 Both our locations emphasise our chosen genre and we included many codes and conventions to make is less confusing
for our audience as that was our main focus after the feedback. I feel we achieved this by mise-en-scene, scripting and editing,
as all three played with along with the pace of the storyline and the dramatic mystery elements. We used continuity editing to
show a chronological sequence in our storyline which we was proud of as if we used a non linear plot it would have added to
the confusion and made it too complex for the target audience. Also if it was too complex it wouldn't focus on the Intensity
and Transparency which is described in Richard Dyer's theory of entertainment. When rehearsing our shots we knew we
wanted a variety of shot with both the sisters in, Elizabeth and Lilly, to show their close relationship as sisters and also to show
their mirrored emotion for the loss of their mother. The audience feedback had massive impact when developing our film idea
to actually filming it as we wanted the film to show emotion and wanted to avoid any confusing to make it more enjoyable for
the audience. Our choice in location reflects the audience feedback on 'Thriller' and 'Mystery' as we deliberately shot a scene in
a grave yard which is conventional for both of the genres they suggested, mainly for the thriller genre.
 The music and audio we used is to reflect the emotional state of the characters
and the action in the narrative. In the letter scene there is a piano piece which is very
emotional and sad, in which this imitates the emotion that the sisters are feeling.
However when Katherine is featured in the film, the editing is quick paced and the
audio at the end is the sound of a car crash in which reveals what Katherine has
done to her mother. The contrast in music and audio is to show juxtaposition
between good and evil, which in our film is the two sisters Elizabeth and Lilly
against Katherine who killed her mum. We feel we have shown this theme
throughout and it adds mystery at the end when it is revealed in the plot twist.
ROUGH CUT
 http://youtu.be/do8Yk0A-Hqg
 When we had a Rough cut of our film we then wanted to see if we had interpreted the
audiences feedback by posting out video on YouTube and sharing an online questionnaire on
Facebook to get more feedback on our film so far. This time we asked more detailed questions as
well as questions we have asked before just to see if anything had changed from the initial storyline
to actually producing our rough cut.
What is your Gender?
Females
Males
 This time we had a wider range for the audience as it ranged between 17-43 in which I found interesting as
her responses were useful however she still wouldn't see it in the cinema which shows we aimed our target
audience to the right age. Mainly females were interested in our film, in which could be explained by the
emotional element between two sisters, or possibly the mystery element. The age certificate stayed the same
which we was happy with as it showed we included aspects of the 15 classification. In the rough cut
questionnaire the general genre become all 'Thriller' in which we felt we achieved the conventions of a thriller
through the mise-en-scene, editing and cinematography. Personally I felt our biggest change and adaptation for
our film was the comparison question as I was proud as a group that we diverted away from the Girl,
Interrupted comparison, as even though we used it for research into psychological thrillers. We wanted our film
to be as original as we could make it, so by going from five people who compared it to Girl, Interrupted to only
was, was a group achievement as it showed we portrayed our film in a different way to Girl, Interrupted. In our
improvements question the audience suggested more music and that there are missing in shots, we expected
these responses as we knew music is a main feature in a thriller mainly to create an atmosphere and tension.
However from all the feedback from the rough cut we were even more confident and reassured that we had the
genre, target audience and age certificate were spot on. We thought the criticisms were expected and knew
already what else we needed to include, by sending out a online questionnaire at this stage of our
production was very useful and beneficial as we received an idea what was then expected for our final film.
FINAL FILM
 Finally we wanted to send our final questionnaire out to our target audience to see if we successfully achieved
to provide the audience with entertainment and to see if we successfully portrayed conventions of our chosen
genre of thriller. I personally found it very useful as it again shows if the audience would actually go and watch our
film and what to improve if I wanted to do a similar project in the future. Also as a group we found it useful as by
getting final feedback we could see how to promote and distribute our product. We included some of the same
questions that we put in our rough cut questionnaire, however as it was our final product we wanted to some
personal opinions by asking different questions such as 'Do you think the music suits the film? why?', 'Do you
think the female casts suit the film?' and 'who do you think the target audience is?'. These questions gave us an
insight to their own individual preferences, however as a group we thought it was crucial to include 'Do you
understand the storyline?' this was a main focus for us as on the very first questionnaire there were mixed opinions
on the complex storyline. So for us to see if we managed to address the storyline in a more understandable way
would be our main overall achievement through our process.
 By looking at our final results we have noticed that more males are now interested in watching our film, the age
certificate is still averaged out as a 15 certificate and our age range is between 16-19 which is what we were wanting as we
wanted a ranged target audience. The feedback shows that thriller is the general genre that they think the film is which we
have successfully achieved by showing conventions throughout mise-en-scene. In the comparison question more responses
show 'I don't know' which shows our film is original and unique as they haven't compared it to any other film, which we are
proud of as a group. The overall response is that they would see it in the cinema as only two people said they wouldn't which
is realistically expected as our film can't satisfy everyone's tastes in film. There were mixed emotions on the choice in music as
some responses were 'no the music were too sad' and then positive feedback such as 'yes it is different', however for us the
criticism weren't offending as we did chose sad music to show the mental state of the characters however some of the
audience thought it was too sad which is fine and didn't think it affected our overall film too much. For us our main question
were do you understand the storyline, in which we gratefully received feedback in which the majority of the audience
understood it which we felt we did it successfully. The response 'at first no but at the end yes' showed successfully how we
included the plot twist as we didn't really expect our audience to fully understand the plot at the beginning but so happy that
the majority of our target audience understands it and has shown that our film has been a success and created entertainment,
which was our initial aim.
 In conclusion keeping in contact and interacting with our audience has
been very beneficial as we have been able to provide entertainment for the
audience and successful produce a film that we are proud of, this is by
adapting and developing our storyline by getting thorough feedback. By
involving the audience this will create an emotional attachment to the film
as they have interpreted their opinions into our film which will make them
want to see it as they were basically the voice throughout our production
process.

Evaluation: Question 3

  • 1. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
  • 2.  Once we had specified who our target audience would be we planned around the elements which we could include in a 15 rated film. When planning our film we decided to give our film a 15 certificate as 12A couldn't show drug use which we intended to put in, however it never made the final cut. Although our film hasn't got drug use I personally still feel that is 15 certificate as it hint towards death and has a complicated storyline. Our target audience is both males and females, at the average age between 15-25 as the teenage characters and storyline would mainly entertain the audience in that range. We also aimed our film at British people, specifically northern people due to the location and accents in the film, this will make it relate-able for the British audience as they can connect as the film is located in Yorkshire.  Films that attract a similar audience in the same genre, could be Girl, Interrupted, Silence of the Lambs and Butterfly Effect. They all have conventions of psychological thrillers and I would typically associate them with a similar age range to our film.
  • 3. After that we conducted a Video Questionnaire and an Online questionnaire for our storyline, in which we asked the public a few questions to see what they thought about our initial idea. We asked them these questions:  What genre do you think this film is? e.g. Horror/Thriller/  Do you like the storyline?  Do you think it sounds similar to any other films? If so which films does it sound similar to?  What certificate do you think this film would be?  Would you go and see this film at the cinema?  If you wanted to buy this on DVD how much would you like to pay for it?  Would you make any improvements to this film?
  • 4.  When we set up these questions we made sure we would get a specific answer as it was just about our storyline, we wanted to see how the target audience reacted to the storyline and see if they would improve anything. In our results we found that a variety of people compared our film to Girl, Interrupted and Orphan which were expected due to the narrative and genre of our film. Majority of the people we asked said they would rate it 15 in which we was happy with that response as we was on the verge of giving it a 12A certificate, however it shows we gave it the appropriate rating. We was very happy with the people who answered the online questionnaire as the age range was 15-19 which we already knew it would specifically interest teenagers due to the teenage actors. In the video questionnaire, our main downfall was people said the storyline seemed too confusing, however they would go and buy it on DVD to see if it was edited well to make it less confusing. As most people said they would go and see it in the cinema and spend about £6-£10 on DVD shows that it would be successful in both as if it got a good response and review in cinemas then money would also be made through DVD sales, in which shows we could promote our film through different media platforms.
  • 5.  As a large percentage of the public said they would buy the film and go watch it, this gave us the confidence. Also most people gave us a high rating for the storyline as there were four people that gave it a 10 rating, however there were the unfortunate rating of a 3. However we didn't get disheartened by it, as we still collected a lot of information about what genre the audience thought it would be. Although nobody specified the sub genre Psychological thriller in our online questionnaire, most people did put 'Thriller' or 'Mystery' in which we was expecting. This shows we developed our plot and storyline to fit conventions of the genre and we did want to add the element of mystery in which we knew people would put it under that category. The majority of the responses and feedback helped us get an insight on how the audience would want us to produce our film just by telling them our initial storyline.
  • 6.  When it came to producing our film, we took into consideration the feedback from the audience, as we wanted to interpret their opinions in the film. As our main concern from the feedback was the complicated storyline, we carefully planned how we would film certain shots and how we would edit these shots to make the narrative clear and easy to understand for the audience. We concentrated on mise-en-scene, editing, cinematography and our main focus was scripting and audio. We felt that the letter from the mother is the main part of the film in which we wanted the audience to sympathise for the two sisters that are grieving over their mother. Also the conversation at the end is crucial in our storyline in which the nurse reveals Katherine's secret. We distinctively put our characters in costumes to define their personalities and positions in the film which makes it less confusing.
  • 7.  Both our locations emphasise our chosen genre and we included many codes and conventions to make is less confusing for our audience as that was our main focus after the feedback. I feel we achieved this by mise-en-scene, scripting and editing, as all three played with along with the pace of the storyline and the dramatic mystery elements. We used continuity editing to show a chronological sequence in our storyline which we was proud of as if we used a non linear plot it would have added to the confusion and made it too complex for the target audience. Also if it was too complex it wouldn't focus on the Intensity and Transparency which is described in Richard Dyer's theory of entertainment. When rehearsing our shots we knew we wanted a variety of shot with both the sisters in, Elizabeth and Lilly, to show their close relationship as sisters and also to show their mirrored emotion for the loss of their mother. The audience feedback had massive impact when developing our film idea to actually filming it as we wanted the film to show emotion and wanted to avoid any confusing to make it more enjoyable for the audience. Our choice in location reflects the audience feedback on 'Thriller' and 'Mystery' as we deliberately shot a scene in a grave yard which is conventional for both of the genres they suggested, mainly for the thriller genre.
  • 8.  The music and audio we used is to reflect the emotional state of the characters and the action in the narrative. In the letter scene there is a piano piece which is very emotional and sad, in which this imitates the emotion that the sisters are feeling. However when Katherine is featured in the film, the editing is quick paced and the audio at the end is the sound of a car crash in which reveals what Katherine has done to her mother. The contrast in music and audio is to show juxtaposition between good and evil, which in our film is the two sisters Elizabeth and Lilly against Katherine who killed her mum. We feel we have shown this theme throughout and it adds mystery at the end when it is revealed in the plot twist.
  • 10.  When we had a Rough cut of our film we then wanted to see if we had interpreted the audiences feedback by posting out video on YouTube and sharing an online questionnaire on Facebook to get more feedback on our film so far. This time we asked more detailed questions as well as questions we have asked before just to see if anything had changed from the initial storyline to actually producing our rough cut.
  • 11. What is your Gender? Females Males
  • 12.  This time we had a wider range for the audience as it ranged between 17-43 in which I found interesting as her responses were useful however she still wouldn't see it in the cinema which shows we aimed our target audience to the right age. Mainly females were interested in our film, in which could be explained by the emotional element between two sisters, or possibly the mystery element. The age certificate stayed the same which we was happy with as it showed we included aspects of the 15 classification. In the rough cut questionnaire the general genre become all 'Thriller' in which we felt we achieved the conventions of a thriller through the mise-en-scene, editing and cinematography. Personally I felt our biggest change and adaptation for our film was the comparison question as I was proud as a group that we diverted away from the Girl, Interrupted comparison, as even though we used it for research into psychological thrillers. We wanted our film to be as original as we could make it, so by going from five people who compared it to Girl, Interrupted to only was, was a group achievement as it showed we portrayed our film in a different way to Girl, Interrupted. In our improvements question the audience suggested more music and that there are missing in shots, we expected these responses as we knew music is a main feature in a thriller mainly to create an atmosphere and tension. However from all the feedback from the rough cut we were even more confident and reassured that we had the genre, target audience and age certificate were spot on. We thought the criticisms were expected and knew already what else we needed to include, by sending out a online questionnaire at this stage of our production was very useful and beneficial as we received an idea what was then expected for our final film.

  • 14. FINAL FILM  Finally we wanted to send our final questionnaire out to our target audience to see if we successfully achieved to provide the audience with entertainment and to see if we successfully portrayed conventions of our chosen genre of thriller. I personally found it very useful as it again shows if the audience would actually go and watch our film and what to improve if I wanted to do a similar project in the future. Also as a group we found it useful as by getting final feedback we could see how to promote and distribute our product. We included some of the same questions that we put in our rough cut questionnaire, however as it was our final product we wanted to some personal opinions by asking different questions such as 'Do you think the music suits the film? why?', 'Do you think the female casts suit the film?' and 'who do you think the target audience is?'. These questions gave us an insight to their own individual preferences, however as a group we thought it was crucial to include 'Do you understand the storyline?' this was a main focus for us as on the very first questionnaire there were mixed opinions on the complex storyline. So for us to see if we managed to address the storyline in a more understandable way would be our main overall achievement through our process.
  • 16.  By looking at our final results we have noticed that more males are now interested in watching our film, the age certificate is still averaged out as a 15 certificate and our age range is between 16-19 which is what we were wanting as we wanted a ranged target audience. The feedback shows that thriller is the general genre that they think the film is which we have successfully achieved by showing conventions throughout mise-en-scene. In the comparison question more responses show 'I don't know' which shows our film is original and unique as they haven't compared it to any other film, which we are proud of as a group. The overall response is that they would see it in the cinema as only two people said they wouldn't which is realistically expected as our film can't satisfy everyone's tastes in film. There were mixed emotions on the choice in music as some responses were 'no the music were too sad' and then positive feedback such as 'yes it is different', however for us the criticism weren't offending as we did chose sad music to show the mental state of the characters however some of the audience thought it was too sad which is fine and didn't think it affected our overall film too much. For us our main question were do you understand the storyline, in which we gratefully received feedback in which the majority of the audience understood it which we felt we did it successfully. The response 'at first no but at the end yes' showed successfully how we included the plot twist as we didn't really expect our audience to fully understand the plot at the beginning but so happy that the majority of our target audience understands it and has shown that our film has been a success and created entertainment, which was our initial aim.
  • 17.  In conclusion keeping in contact and interacting with our audience has been very beneficial as we have been able to provide entertainment for the audience and successful produce a film that we are proud of, this is by adapting and developing our storyline by getting thorough feedback. By involving the audience this will create an emotional attachment to the film as they have interpreted their opinions into our film which will make them want to see it as they were basically the voice throughout our production process.
