Questionnaire analysis
Question 1

It is clear from the questionnaire that most of the audience are male.
With this is mind, I aim to incorporate masculine traits into the video. For
example, Mise-en-scene may include a masculine costume (clothing such as boots
would be appropriate). However, not forgetting the minority of females, the music
video could appeal to them with the use of specific props (such as
guitars, symbolising talent/sensitivity).
Question 2

The majority of audiences appear to be aged 16-19, with a minority being 25-40. This
indicates a young-mainstream audience, therefore the music may address
mainstream topics (such as latest fashion, latest music, etc.). For example, the music
video may incorporate fashion labels into the costume-aspect, and mise-en-scene
may include imagery that mainstream audiences will find appealing, such as modern
gadgets (i.e. headphones, TV, etc.).
Question 3

From the results, it is apparent that all members who took the questionnaire listen to music. It is further apparent that the
majority of audiences listen to more than 1 hour of music a day..

“For American youth, the second most popular media activity was listening to music. Time spent listening to music by American
eight to 18-year-olds increased from an average one hour and 44 minutes per day in 2004, to an average two hours and 19
minutes per day in 2009”

In comparison to the previously quoted, it is clear that consumption among teenagers is roughly average. This indicates a
potentially mainstream audience.
Question 4

From the questionnaire, it is apparent that the audience are likely to be fans of a
broad range of music genres. This means that the production must involve a range of
factors relative to other genres. For example, stereotypical costumes can relate to the
other genres (such as knit-wear for pop cultures). In addition to this, the theme of
the song will link to the genre (a love song can appeal to R&B fans; link to the ‘blues’
theme of R&B, the song may be a love-loss song). In terms of the Mise-en-scene, I
will aim to keep it a minimal as possible to not overshadow any genre in particular.
Question 5

Indie-folk and Indie-pop are the most common responses on the questionnaire. With
these results, I will aim to make a video which will appeal to the ‘mainstream’ indie.
This includes things such as typical indie costume (i.e. Skinny jeans), which conforms
to the indie pop culture. In addition to this, typical folk music has links with the
country and ‘nature’, which also has loose links to ‘farming’; this can be reached in
the music video through costume as a flat-cap, which represents a farming culture
which conforms to folk-culture. Another factor to consider could be the actor, whom
may have a beard/facial hair which will help to address indie-folk fans.
Question 6

The two biggest social networking sites (Facebook and Youtube) are the most popular
choice from the results provided. This means that the video would be likely to be
successful if it conforms to stereotypes (thus be approachable by the mainstream
social networkers). This means that any action that can be perceived as ‘over the top’
or not-normal (i.e. Crazy make-up, substance abuse) is not likely to occur within the
video.
Question 7
The question was: “Name 3 artists you have most selectively listened to in the last
week”. The results indicate a broad spectrum of music tastes, however the vast
majority of results show that the audiences listen to what is played via the
mainstream: at the time of the questionnaire, PSY had become incredibly popular in
the charts. Other bands mentioned in the results indicate non-chart existence (such
as Snow-Patrol, Oasis, Kasabian, Stereophonics and Blur): these bands mentioned
have links to the Indie genre (especially Kasabian), which suggests that some of
audience have taste for Indie music that is not in the charts. The music video will aim
to appeal to both mainstream audiences and also indie audiences.
• Blur, Oasis, Nizlopi
• Drake, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna
• Taylor swift, Cheryl Cole, Little mix
• Will Young, Stereophonics, Bryan Adams
• Psy, Taeyang, Justin Bieber
• Rusko, Nickey Romero, Eminem
• Ne-Yo, Florence and the Machine, The Script
• Eminem, Example, PSY!
• Snow Patrol, Oasis, Kasabian
