The document summarizes the results of a questionnaire about music preferences. It found that 2/3 of respondents were female and most were aged 16-25. Pop and indie music were the most popular genres. Most respondents watched music videos everyday and preferred high budget videos. Common favorite artists were female artists like Taylor Swift and Beyonce. This provides guidance on targeting branding and content toward young female audiences interested in indie/pop music genres.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2. 1we asked 15 people what gender they are; this is so we could base
our branding of our star to appeal to the majority of people I
surveyed, in this case I interviewed 2/3 female, this therefore
shows that the branding will be aimed at more so at females,
although we will still include aspects which will appeal to males as
well, as there is a male star in our band. This was a fault on our
behalf as we had an unbalanced sample.
4. 2
We then assessed their ages so we could target the audience
that most commonly listened to indie/pop music and
would be interested in our branding. The most common
age group we interviewed were 16-25, at 67%. However,
we had another unfair sample as not many 36-45 year olds
completed the questionnaires, so I will therefore have less
information about their customer needs. We still produce
a star in aim towards 16-25 year olds by making the lyrics
in the songs more relatable to those going through
relationship difficulties such as relationships etc
6. 3
• From this particular question, we have gathered
information that pop was the favourite genre with
35%, followed narrowly with indie at 34%. This is
beneficial to our work and development as we was
going to go with an indie/pop music video and these
results confirm that the target audience like this
genre and that it would work successfully.
8. 4
• This particular pie chart shows me that 91% of my target
audience watch music videos, with 42% of them watching
them everyday. This was useful as I was then able to get a
more in depth response when asking them questions such
as ‘What settings do you like to see in music videos and
why?’ therefore as I have a vast amount of people who
watch music videos a lot I was given a very in depth
answer to this particular question, therefore it shows that
by my target audience watching several different music
videos per day, that they as consumers are also given
different connotations and that they watch music videos
daily as a hobby and something to pass the time by.
10. 5
• Overall, my target audience’s favourite music video was Michael Jackson –
Thriller as this achieved 20% of the votes out of 12 responses given to this
particular question. They claimed it was their favourite music video as ‘it
was before it’s time’ and ‘it offered something new’ , noticeably it was both
participants over the age of 56+ and the 46-55 participants who said that
this was their favourite music video. This is due to the unique elements
Michael Jackson involved, the video seemed somewhat futuristic. The
sample who shared that this was their favourite video was more likely to be
of the 46+ age as they were most likely early teens when the video was
released. It was also noticeable that Taylor Swift had three different songs
in the favourite music video category, the fact in which she has three
different songs resembles the fact in which she appeals to 16-25 year olds
and they were the category in which we surveyed the most. The reasons as
to why people like her music videos so much are because they’re ‘engaging’
and because ‘the lyrics are relatable’.

12. 6
• Beyonce and Jess Glynne both received two votes each
with therefore ties them at 13% this again reflects the type
of artist I am going for as Jess Glynne is an indie/pop
singer who is one of the artists we are inspired from well
as accommodating other artist styles within our music
video as well. We noticed that the majority of the
‘favourite artists’ were infact female, now this may be due
to the sample being predominantly female or maybe even
males prefer to listen to a female vocal than male; we have
to consider this when producing our brand.

• 73% of my target audience preferred high budget
videos and therefore they like elements such as
vibrant colours and a better quality production. With
a better quality production comes the responsibility
of using higher quality cameras, lighting and props.
Also, due to them preferring high budget videos this
suggests they prefer the lavish, expensive elemenst of
the videos. For example they like the richness in
many videos as this makes them stand out.

• City and outside, were the two most popular settings with
27% and 20% respectively. Locations which would work
with an indie/pop genre would be the city (such as
London) because of its vibrant light and good scenery,
this would also work with outside and although we will
not be filming on a beach, this is due to being generic and
seen very foten. We want our video to be unique and
stand out and we want to stear clear of typical music
videos. I have also done this in order to try and make my
music video relatable to my target audience so that it may
remind them of a previous occasion when listening to
similar music

• My target audience prefer the fancy/prestigious
fashion with 33%, this would be hard to fit with the
indie vibe as the genre is known for being laid back,
casual and chill. The use of normal clothes (20%)
will be valuable to use as this is what our genre is
known for. Yet we still want it to have elements of
realism whilst still using bright colours. We will try to
encorporate the use of both styles of fashion

20. • Vibrant colours are what attract people to newly
released music videos with 19% of people agreeing
with this. This is useful to know as I was going to
include vibrant colours within my own music video
and from the results of my questionnaire, this has
highlighted the fact that this would be a useful way in
order to attract my potential target audience.

22. • The majority of my target audience agreed that they’d like
to watch an indie/pop music video, therefore it has gave
me the confidence to go ahead with the idea as I think it
will be successful and that it will appeal to a mass market.
The 20% who answered no to this particular question
were the two 56+ participants and the reasoning behind
this was because they didn’t know the genre. Therefore, I
have achieved a successful target audience in 16-25 year
olds, who also like other indie popstars, such as Taylor
Swift, Jess Glynne and Ella Eyre
