2. How old are you?
Here, the majority of respondents are ranging 13-17, the
main focus for our target audience. The rest are 18-24
which we also are aiming for as our target audience,
therefore, we are pleased with the amount of response as
we will get fairly valid feedback. Although, it would have
been good to have some older respondents to compare
the younger respondents too.
3. What is your gender?
The percentage difference of both gender
responses were fairly balanced- despite more
females. As we are having a music video aimed
at both genders and characters each gender, we
want a response from both male and female as
we can get a clearer idea of what both genders
want to see in a music video.
4. What is your favourite music genre?
The majority of respondents selected the indie genre
as their favourite, closely followed by other. This
outcome means that the audience we are targeting
have an interest in the music video genre we are using
for our music video- indie pop. Furthermore, we still
did get a diverse range of genres that respondents
enjoyed, which suggests young people today are open
to a variety of genres to listen to. An interesting, but
expected figure was that 0% of the respondents liked
the classical genre, this suggests this genre is more
fitting with the older generation. Another figure that
was fairly interesting was that the hip-hop, pop and
R&B genres had quite low percentages, I did not expect
this as I assumed these genres were very current in the
eyes of younger people.
5. Why do you like this genre of music?
In terms of why respondents like their selected genre there
were mixed Reponses, although one occurrence was that
people generally liked their chosen genre because it aided
their requirements, for example: ‘it’s funky’, ‘it’s fun to listen
to’ and ‘it’s relaxing’ etc. Therefore, to make our music video
fitting enough to our target audience we need to relate back
to why they enjoy the indie genre- which should include
aspects such as pace, the story, uniqueness and relatability.
6. Who is your favourite artist?
We’ve got a range of responses of individuals favourite
artists. Although, many respondents said indie related
artists as their favourite. For instance, Bastille, Tom
Odell, James Bay and The 1975 are all artists linked or
closely linked with the indie scene, therefore, within
the age of the audience we are targeting the indie
genre is considered a particular choice. Also, the artists
selected are very current, this mirrors the young age of
respondents.
7. What is your current favourite music
video?
In general the respondents liked a fair range of music from
various genres, e.g. Drake- Hip-hop. However, many of the
respondents selected Indie style artists, for instance, Ed
Sheeran- Photograph, Are We Ready- Two Door Cinema Club.
However, a recurring factor that is present in nearly all the
music videos was that they are illustrative- telling a story to the
audience.
8. What do you look for in a music video?
Here, we have had a good range of responses about what
people look for in a music video. But a main aspect people
looked for is ‘narrative’ or ‘something that tells a story’,
this could be because people like to feel immersed in a
music video and understand it from the lyrics to the
visuals. Another main aspect is ‘location and lighting’, this
is clearly an important factor in making a professional,
successful music video, Mollie and I will ultimately be sure
to include these features.
9. Would you like to see both male and
female protagonists?
A clear majority selected that they would want to
see a mix of both male and female protagonists,
this ultimately implies that to the respondents a
music video is more appealing when both genders
are included. This result is an expected result as
many modern music videos include a mix of both
genders to tell a love story, dancing or the male
gaze. But in our music video we want to include
both genders as main characters with two different
narratives.
10. Where do you think we should set our
video?
The feedback of the location we should use received
a very tight response. Although, the City Centre
received the largest amount of votes, this could be
because young people are often associated with
Urban, busy areas such as the city and could put the
characters in a more relatable position. Next selected
was a home setting, again this could be to create a
more relatable atmosphere, perhaps more fitting to
an indie genre. Furthermore, a beach and countryside
setting were very close, implying that vast areas and
outdoor spaces could be more visually stimulating.
11. Conclusion
Overall, the survey feedback has been very interesting and has considerably
helped Mollie and I gain an idea of what individuals want from a music video
and what they find important within one, which we will be able to apply to
produce a visually pleasing music video for our target audience.
