QUESTION 3
What kind of media institutions might distribute your
media product and why?
Distribution Methods
■ My magazine could be distributed using apps, websites or be
downloaded onto phones, tablets or computers.
■ They could alternatively be sold in retail shops such asWHSmiths,
supermarkets or newsagents.
Advantages of Distributing Online
■ Online copies would attract a younger audience who spend more of
their time online.
■ Appeal to people who can’t physically get to a shop where it is sold so
can get it at home.
■ They would be cheaper as it saves paper as they aren't having to be
mass produced to then be distributed.
Advantages of Distributing in Store
■ Allows the magazine to be seen by more people and casual shoppers.
■ The audience is able to flick through to see if they’d want to purchase
the magazine rather than just judging it by its front cover.
■ Buying a magazine is recreational and a physical copy would provide
entertainment if an individual doesn’t have access to the internet.
Media Institutions
The two media institutions I considered to publish my magazine were IPC
media and Bauer media
■ IPC Media
■ Bauer media
Why I chose IPC media
■ I think IPC media is an appropriate institution for my magazine. I have
chosen them because they publish NME which is the UK’s most popular
music magazine so fans of it may be interested in my mine as it is of a
similar genre. It’s sold for a similar price to my magazine and has gained
much success which would give it potential to be just as successful.
NME is also the only music magazine IPC media publishes which would
allow mine to be recognised and give an alternative option to the
readers. It would perhaps gain a high readership, giving the publisher
even more success.
Why I didn’t Chose Bauer
■ Bauer media already produce many music magazines such as Kerrang
and Q so may not benefit from publishing another similar magazine that
may be overlooked in their success. By publishing my magazine through
IPC media, it would have a higher chance of success and be published
over a wide range of media including an online copy which expands its
viewing to a wider audience.
