HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY
TEXTS?
QUESTION 2
BRAND IDENTITY
CHARACTER IMAGES:
Both ancillary texts, magazine cover
and film poster, use the same main
character as the central focus of both
products. In both products, the
'antagonist' Jess is the center focus on
both, and this creates brand identity as
she is easily distinguished from the
other characters, especially with her
distinct hair and red lipstick.
Similarly, in both the film
poster and the visual
production, the two
protagonists are featured
and focused on as they are
also just as important, and
they are central to the
brand identity.
COLOURS
In both the magazine cover
and the film poster, the
prominent colour that is
immediately effective for
the reader is the colour
red. We chose to use red to
enable us to create a brand
identity as it meant that
we could portray the main
antagonist how we
wanted. The colour red
often connotes fear and
danger, and also shows
power and dominance,
which is just how we
wanted the antagonist Jess
to be portrayed.
TAGLINES & GRAPHICS
Although we did not put the tagline 'she won't stay quiet for long' on the magazine
poster, we did follow poster conventions and place the tagline on the very top of the
poster. Linking the tagline with the visual product was centered around the main theme
of our trailer, secrets. Therefore, the text message that says 'I know your secret' is key in
addressing the theme and therefore creates a brand identity of 'secrets' that links all the
products together. In addition, the rose is featured in both ancillary texts to represent
danger, fear and power.
DO YOUR PRODUCTS ALL SUGGEST THE SAME
GENRE?
All three products do
suggest a similar genre, yet
the visual
production highlights
the genre more. The genre
is teen drama with a hint
of mystery, which is also a
unique selling point of our
production. The trailer
follows conventions of
both genres, and the use of
characters and
colors throughout the
ancillary texts suggest
the same genre.
