In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
QUESTION 1
• The main location for our teaser trailer was
in a high school setting as this is where
conventionally most teen dramas take place
and we wanted to adhere to the conventions.
Most teen dramas are set in a high school as it
is relatable and is where the age of the cast
would realistically spend their time. For
example, one of the main teasers we
researched was Mean Girls, which is
predominantly filmed in a high school, and
we are therefore adhering to one of the main
conventions. We also used other settings
such as a 'dorm' room to enable the audience
to understand more about both the plot and
the characters.
SETTING &
LOCATION
COSTUMES & PROPS
• The costumes and props we used
typically follow the conventions of the
teen drama genre, and the costumes
we did choose were chosen to create
a representation of the different
characters. For example, the main
character, Jess, is first introduced with
a powerful medium shot of her
walking down the corridor with her
high heels. We used this shot to
instantly portray Jess as powerful and
striking to the other girls. Similarly, the
use of the handbag compared to the
other girls rucksacks creates a clear
difference between the social status of
the characters. We did not need to
use a huge amount of props because
typically the genre does not use a
signifcant amount of props in order to
fulfill certain representations.
