MELC 2:
Cite and explain ways of using Earth’s
resources sustainably.
Identify the different types of Earth’s
Resources
OBJECTIVES FOR TODAY
1
Cite and explain ways of using Earth’s
resources sustainably
2
What are the two types of natural
resources?
Renewable Natural Resources
Nonrenewable Natural
Renewable Natural Resources
They are called renewable because they
can grow again and never run out.
Examples are water, wind, wood, sun and
energy wave.
Nonrenewable Natural Resources
These are things that can run out or be
used up which means that there is only a
limited supply or available only in limited
amount. They usually come from the
ground. Examples are fossil fuels such
as gas, oil, minerals and coal.
Here are examples of sustainable way of using the
natural resources:
1. Using fishnet with little holes when fishing.
2. Reducing, reusing, and recycling of materials
to lessen or cut back the amount of raw materials.
3. Using electricity generated from solar panels
instead of using electricity generated from fossil
fuels.
ACTIVITY
Types of Earth’s Resources
Sustainable use of
resources occurs when
the rate of consumption
can continue forever
without damaging the
environment.
What are other sustainable ways of using
the natural resources that are helpful in the
crisis that we are facing now?
How can people conserve natural
resources?
Why is it important to conserve natural
resources?
The lives of future generations depend
on how we use natural resources today.

Editor's Notes

  1. Connection of the video Can nature survive w/o humans? Can humans survive w/o our natural resources?
  2. Planet Earth is made up of different things – air, water, plants, animals, soil, rocks, minerals, crude oil, and other fossil fuels. These things are called natural resources because they are not made by people; rather they are gathered from nature. Sunlight and wind are examples of natural resources.
  3. Earth’s natural resources supply the needs of living organisms everyday. People depend on natural resources for just about everything that keeps them fed and sheltered as well as the things that keep them entertained. Take note also that nonrenewable resources are limited, so sustainable measures should be taken to ensure that they last. Also, some of the renewable resources may become nonrenewable resources if their usage is not managed properly. They should be used wisely so future generations can still enjoy them. Sustainable use of resources occurs when the rate of consumption can continue forever without damaging the environment.
