The biggest example was the Victoria Climbie enquiry in 2003; Lord Laming who directed the inquiry
had identified poor communication and lack of action taken within professionals. The purpose of a
serious case review is laid down in Working Together 2010, Chapter 8. It is to: Establish what
lessons are to be learnt from the case about the way in which local professionals and organisations
work individually and together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children; Identify clear
lessons for both within and between agencies, how and within what timescales they will be acted on,
and what is expected to change as a result; Improve intra and inter agency working; Better
safeguarding and promote the welfare of children/young people. Serious case reviews are not
enquiries about how a child died or was seriously harmed, or Who is responsible. These are matters
for coroners and criminal courts respectively to identify. 1.5 2. Understand the importance of working

Representation Of Women In Taming Of The Shrew By William...
Written in the late 16th century during the Elizabethan era, the Taming of the Shrew is a play by
William Shakespeare. It tells the narrative of Katherine, a termagant, rebellious shrew , daughter to
father Baptista and sister to unassuming, obedient, attractive Bianca. In it, she is subjected to methods
intended to restrain her aggressive behaviour, or effectively tame her, by Petruchio, a bachelor on the
prowl for wealthy women.
Having been performed throughout the centuries to create a historical assortment of varied
adaptations, versions of Taming of the Shrew have changed in accordance with time periods and
related shifting social expectations and culture. Discussed by literary academia extensively, a
particular manifestation reflecting such changes among this cohort of portrayals is the representation
of women. Notably, a clear trend about the societal attitudes at the time of presentation of versions can
be assumed by examining and comparing the depiction of women in two adaptations; the Globe
Theatre s directed by Toby Frow in 2012, a production expressing social norms from the Elizabethan
era, and the BBC s ShakespeaRE told TV episode directed by David Richards (BBC Retold), set in
modern times. The representation of women in these plays allow it to be concluded that the social
expectations of women have progressed from domestically and professionally limiting to more
supportive and liberal over time, with a specific focus on gender equality. In spite of this,

The Physics Of The Gas
3. The size of the flame depends on the gas air mixture. If a high proportion of primary air enters the
flame would be much smaller and concentrated giving higher flame temperatures. This gives rise to
carbon dioxide because of unburned gases. For this the injector was again the great solution. As the
gas comes out of the injector air enters into the stream and is mixed in the mixing tube with the gas
before it comes out of the burner port. Combustion zone is where the gas burns in the primary air and
generates heat in the flame and combustion is completed with the aid of the secondary air that is
drawn into the air from the sides. Fig 7: Injector pin [3]
4. The amount of gas emerging out of the injector enters into the mixing chamber ... Show more

Therefore, most burners are designed to have a throat that gives an aeration greater than optimum and
also with a device for restricting the air flow so that the optimum aeration can be set for any given
situation.
5. If the mixing chamber is small good mixing of gas air mixture cannot be done. So, a lot of energy
will be wasted. Therefore, there are many ways of improving the gas air mixture:
By providing a long mixing chamber serves in good mixing of gas air mixture. But the mixing tube
will be very long.
By using a venturi, with a pipe that tapers into the throat and then again tapers out smoothly. In this
the air flow can be adjusted by screwing the injector into or out of the throat or by moving the throat
relative to the injector. Fig 8: Throat or Diffuser [3]
The air flow in the venturi can also be controlled with the help of a throttle valve which can be
screwed to block the throat. Fig 9: Throat with Throttle [3]
The venturi can be smaller than the cylindrical mixing tube. Therefore, it can be used in any place
even if the space is limited.
6. Equivalent supply of heat to cook anything is the main necessity for high efficiency and reduce the
energy consumption. Therefore, burner ports were designed. So, the flame can be directed effectively
where it is needed. It is possible for the flame of the burner to travel back to the

Comparison Of Oedipus And Frogs
To begin with, if Oedipus and Frogs are to be taken into consideration and the aspects of the plot
dissected using the guidelines provided in Poetics, then based on Aristotle s definition of plot as
organization of events, it can be stated that the structure of plot is the same for the two stories of
opposing genres, for both have a beginning, a middle and an end one following after the other
resulting in a well constructed plot not beginning or ending at any arbitrary point (Aristotle 10 13 14).
However, while the character experiences a fall from good fortune to bad fortune in most tragedies, in
most comedies the character experiences a fall from bad fortune to good fortune (Aristotle 21 22).
Thus, in regards to Oedipus it can be noted that the story follows the general plot structure with
Oedipus first facing good fortune briefly in the beginning of the play, as alluded to by the Elder who
states that Oedipus came to Thebes, saved us from the Sphinx,/ And without any help, derived us from
despair/... Now, Oedipus, our master and greatest power (Sophocles lines 35 36 40).

People Corrupt Power In George Orwell s Animal Farm And...
William Gaddis once said Power doesn t corrupt people, People corrupt power In Animal Farm and
Mouseland both of the animals who have the power take over and create corrupt and unequal
societies. This causes the societies to fall under the rules of greedy and selfish leaders. The authors of
Animal Farm and Mouseland use the narrative techniques of characterization and conflict to illustrate
messages about how power can destroy societies and take away the equality in the society.
First, in Animal Farm and Mouseland the authors use characterization to show how power can destroy
societies and can take away the equality that is in the society. For example, in Animal Farm, George
Orwell uses the pigs as a way to show the different levels of importance. It shows how the other
animals are always below the pigs. On pages 35 and 36 it states You do not imagine, I hope, that we
pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples.
I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples
(this had been proven by science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well being
of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. Orwell uses the words absolutely necessary to the well being of a
pig making it seem the most important to the pigs and no other animals. This means that the pigs
started to take the things they wanted and decided they were the ones who had all of the power. This
shows that the power they created could give them more equal rights than the others. In a similar ways
Tommy Douglas uses the cats to show how the other animals are below them and the cats are the ones
who have power. In paragraph 3 of Mouseland it states A government made up of big, fat, black cats.
Douglas states fat, black, cats. characterizing the cats are lazy and useless. This means that in
Mouseland there was a society run by animals who didn t do what they needed and they were lazy.
This shows that just because of the way the cats are characterized they aren t good leaders and they
have the power. This shows that in Animal Farm and Mouseland the people in power were
characterized as greedy and selfish, but came off to the

His epitome of physical health blurs the true importance of life; he has the power to change the course
of a whole city but chooses to debate over his own worth proving that the human race is sometimes in
need of some obstacles in life in order to appreciate their current situations.. While the blessing of a
healthy life can disguise itself as a curse on occasion, once someone realizes the value of a life, their
world is transformed. In the article, What Is the Value of a Human Life? , Kenneth Feinberg refers to
the time when his legal argument could not stand up against the reasoning of families who had lost
everything. He recalled, I was basing my decision on the law, just as juries did every day. But this
explanation fell on deaf ears. Grieving families couldn t hear it. And I didn t believe it myself,
(Feinberg). An attorney whose whole career depended upon the words of a law book altered his way
of thinking after being forced to face the aftermath of death on the remaining family members. It is
easy to regurgitate the phrases from the law but it is more difficult to apply those standards of human
value after observing death s true

Reconstruction Of Reconstruction During The Civil War
Describe and analyze Reconstruction. Did Reconstruction have any successes?
The end of civil war in the United States of America brought about many problems, in particular for
the South. Some of the problems were political, economic decay and social disorder. The war
destroyed the plantations and crops thus causing many to starve to death while others became
homeless. The reconstruction became the only hope for the people. Radical reconstruction began in
1867, which enabled the freed black men to have a voice in the government. Before the civil war, the
Southern state had enacted laws that suppressed all African American. This fact angered many people
from the North who were seeking to end slavery. Therefore, during the reconstruction era, the black
people wanted their voices to be heard. The restoration process began with small plans that were put
forward by President Lincoln as well as President Johnson. The two president s main aim was to
combine the confederacy with the unions (Flanagan). This fact was called the presidential
reconstruction. The Republicans were put into office to ensure that the freed people s rights were
protected as well as to make sure that America was united. The civil rights act was passed and the
southern state began to follow the rule. The Congress passed the Ku Klux Klan Act that would ensure
that the federal authorities could be able to protect the freed citizens. However, even with the
introduction of such laws the African Americans were

Jessica Vs. Amber
Although people generate a separate profile for each individual they meet, sometimes the profiles are
incredibly different. In high school everyone befriends many persons of different races, personalities,
as well as social groups, yet we tend to befriend remarkably similar individuals. Rarely do we realize,
some people are actually more different than we know. Freshman year, I entered into a world all
different than what I was used to, but yet I made two amazing friends. Jessica and Amber both loved
school, friends, and doing art outside of school. Although between them are many differences, but a
few stand out from the others. College and work ethic, their personalities, and talents differ greatly.
Work and education bring forward some attributes in people that are extremely different from others.
Jessica and Amber are extremely different, especially in this way. Jessica loves to learn in general but
does not like education. Jessica doesn t look to books for her knowledge, but acquires more common
sense than most people I know. She has no plans on attending college any time soon, but had rather
enter directly into the workforce. Jessica once said, I don t care for going to college, it s pointless to
me. I had rather work than go to school. Jessica loves to help people out, and one day would love to

much, just so she wouldn t offend the other person. Amber loves helping people, but she is more likely

The Extreme Cruelty of the Middle Passage Essay
There is no other experience in history where innocent African Americans encountered such a brutal
torment. This infamous ordeal is called the Middle Passage or the middle leg of the Triangular Trade,
which was the forceful voyage of African Americans from Africa to the New World. The Africans
were taken from their homeland, boarded onto the dreadful ships, and scattered into the New World as
slaves. 10 16 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic during the 1500 s to the 1900 s and 10
15 percent of them died during the voyage. Millions of men, women, and children left behind their
personal possessions and loved ones that will never be seen again. Not only were the Africans limited

Alexander Falconbridge writes that a woman was dejected from the moment she came on board, and
refused both food and medicine; being asked by the interpreter what she wanted, she replied nothing
but to die , and she did die (Howarth). The enslaved Africans did not want to go through the anguish
and would rather have committed suicide or starve themselves to death. They were physically beaten
and were under great emotional pain from being torn from their families ( The Wreck of the Henrietta
Marie ). This floating prison transported the exhausted Africans under excruciating surroundings. The
ships were regular vessels updated and restructured to carry human cargo. They were mostly 50 125
feet long and 8 to 15 feet wide, averaging 100 to 300 ton. The larger ships held about five hundred
slaves, while the smaller ones transported less than one hundred. During the concluding years of the
slave trade, the large ships were able to carry more than a thousand slaves. They were crammed like
loaves of bread on a shelf with only six or seven square feet for their bodies to lie down (Postma 23).
The men were fettered two by two and firmly confined to prevent potential rebellion. The women and
children had more space to move only because they were not strong enough to break the chains. The
majority of the women were forced to help with onboard chores and in the preparation of food. Many
of the slave ships contained drums so the slaves would be able

includes robots and new technology. The Illustrated Man is mainly about exploring technology in
different ways. Throughout the book, there are unique ways of showing technology and some weird or
different ways too. Ray Bradbury s The Illustrated Man has a common theme throughout the book.
The theme is: Technology is portrayed as failing to make human life better.
The story, the Veldt, is about a nursery for two kids that have a mind of their own. They have a nursery
but it takes a turn for the worse when they started using the technology against their own parents. In

Reflection On The Self Essay
Article Reflections on the Self: A Case Study of a Prosopagnosic Patient (2008) and Movement Cues
Aid Face Recognition in Developmental Prosopagnosia (2015) give a review on visual agnosia. These
article s main focus is on prosopagnosia. Sigmund Freud coined the term visual agnosia back in 1891.
Visual agnosia is the ability to see an image and store it, but there is an impairment in visually
recognizing the specific object. There are a plethora of subtypes of visual agnosia, which include
prosopagnosia (the inability to recognize faces), achromatopsia (the inability to distinguish different
colors), landmark agnosia (the inability to recognize buildings and places), etc. If one suffers from
visual agnosia they can have multiple subtypes of associative agnosia. In the review case study, The
Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat (Sacks, 1995), Dr. P was diagnosed with Prosopagnosia,
Landmark Agnosia, and Simultagnosia. The first article, Reflections on the Self: A Case Study of a
Prosopagnosic Patient by Stanley Klein, Rami Gabriel, Cynthia Gangi and Theresa Robertson take a
look at a patient who suffers from prosopagnosia and how it can affect one s personality. Researchers
were curious to see if there was a relationship between brain activity of someone with prosopagnosia
and their personality. They were interested in this specific topic because of the historical importance of
the brain s process of facial recognition. Based on evolution, an important mechanism for survival

The Problem Of Computer Programming Education
Through the Educate to Innovate Initiative, the current administration has made the case that
investments in STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) are essential to
maintaining the status of international competitiveness. But since the start of the program in 2009, the
importance of computer programming education is still being misunderstood and inadequately
addressed. Though the administration has tried to get more technology into schools, it s failed to teach
kids what could really help them compete internationally which is coding. Computer programming is
the driving force behind all forms of computer technology. Without programmers, these machines
could be more innovative and capable than mankind could ever imagine, but if there is no one to
program, there is no way for computers to perform needed tasks.
Though technology has become such a key point in the national discussion on education, computer
literacy is still sometimes confused with computer science. While computer literacy refers to word
processing and knowledgeable use of the Internet, computer science refers to the study of algorithmic
processes, hardware and software designs, and ways to impact society with technological innovation.
A general computer science curriculum largely consists of critical thinking, problem solving, and logic
the skills that American students will need in order to compete for the best jobs, whether or not they
become programmers (James, 2013).

Essay about The Benefits Of Study Hall
The Benefits Of Study Hall
Mark, you won t get anywhere without studying , His mother use to tell him when he use to waist all
his time playing rather that studying. Mark wasn t such a good student because he wouldn t spend any
time studying, until one day his parents decided to send him to Cushing Academy, a boarding school
in the USA, which they knew it was going to improve his study habits and help him being more
responsible. But what really amazed his parents was this period of time used to study called Study
Hall . Because of its amazing results, preparation for college, and providing responsibility, Study Hall

As Mark was very satisfied with his results, many other students also express to their parents how
helpful was Study Hall in Cushing Academy.
The same what Study Hall keeps students in their desks from 8:00pm to 10:00 pm, it s a great method
of improving a student s responsibility. When someone is into a routine of doing something every day
at the same time, he gets use to it and sometimes keeps that routine forever. One of the reasons study
hall is done in Cushing is to provide discipline and responsibility to a student in order to study by your
own in College in a near future. It will also make a student keep at least two hours a day to review and
study for college. Keeping time for your studies is a great sign of responsibility. In many aspects,
Study Hall contributes to a great future by providing responsibility and discipline in a student s
studies.
As a great preparation for college, Study Hall is known by helping students to improve their study
skills in a great amount. One of the biggest worries of Mark was that he wouldn t be prepared to do
homework by himself in college, but he was mistaken. Study Hall made him conscious of grades. He
thought of the good colleges he could get in if he had good grades, and the respect and admiration he
could get of teachers and friends. But the problem was how to manage his time to do all of his
homework? But there was Study Hall. A great

The Ozone Depletion
The earth atmosphere has many layers; the first two layers are the troposphere, the stratosphere, and
the ozone layer which sits in the lower area of the stratosphere. The troposphere layer is where a lot of
human activity occurs, such as planes and mountain climbing. The next layer is the stratosphere and
this is where the ozone layer is located as well. The ozone layer helps protect people from ultraviolet
radiation that mainly come from the sun. The ozone layer can be different depending on the season
and the location. Over the past few years, the ozone layer has been depleting because of human
activity. The main issue of the depletion of the ozone layer is the man made products that have been
created and has cause bad effect on the ozone layer itself. The ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that
protects all living things on Earth from damaging ultraviolet rays that come from the sun. With the
ozone layer depleting, it would be difficult for anything to survive much longer or not at all. The
ozone acts as a shield to protect living things from absorbing the ultraviolet ray and keeps them from
being damaged. Many man made materials are causing the ozone layer to deplete at a faster rate. The
author states, Emissions of chlorine and bromine from CFCs and halons are to blame for excessive
stratospheric ozone depletion (Ivanovich and Calm). This type of emission is going into the
atmosphere and is breaking down the ozone layer. Consequently, this is resulting in the

Afternoon Tea On The Stoep Essay
This analysis will attempt to explore both the denotative and connotative meanings behind the two
images provided in the text. The images will be evaluated based off of Victorian values so as to see
how it would have been interpreted by citizens of Victorian England and the English colonies. One of
the images is a photography/painting of an afternoon tea in the Victorian era and the other is an
advertisement for cooking stoves. During the Victorian era, exploration, industrialization and
colonization where at their peak and as such the values of the people of that time could be seen in their
advertisements and other art works.

It was customary to wear black in those situations as queen Victoria herself did. The Victorians often
emulated Queen Victoria and followed the trends which she had started. In the scene all the men are
either standing or sitting on a window pane while all the seated people are women. This connotes clear
gender role allocation between gentleman and ladies as the ladies are offered the seats. Gender also
plays a role as women were meant to be pretty and cheerful hence the white draping dresses worn by
the other women. There are elements of the domestic life and weakness and flaws lead to social
problems. The servants are dressed in clothes to separate them from the higher class people and they
generally hover towards the back so as to remain unseen and unheard. You have the lesser people such
as the slaves and lower class doing the serving. The men are clean and well groomed as are the ladies
connoting a sense of self improvement and pride. The image as a whole connotes comfort and modern

A Beautiful Day In My Life
Five more minutes, I groaned as I layed in my bed one cloudless Monday morning while my mom
annoyingly stood in the doorway of my room, rapidly clapping her hands to wake me up. How late
were you up last night? she questioned as she resiliently clapped. Applications and essays, I told her as
I rolled out of bed. Still working on Georgetown. Georgetown?! It s already been three weeks! I know,
I know. I m putting a lot of effort into this. After all, this is my life, is it not? Although this is a lot of
work... She looked at me as if I had some sort of careless attitude. She was right though; I did. I got
ready for school, went downstairs, and gazed out the window in the living room to see the gorgeous
sunlight shine through the skyscrapers. Beautiful view, I remarked as my mom walked down the open
riser staircase. The tall towers that were scattered across Manhattan stood right in front of my window.
I walked towards the kitchen and grabbed an apple from the fridge. I m very glad you picked this one
out of all the apartments we looked at. Me too, Lucas, my mother assured as I cleaned the alluring
apple under the running faucet on the island, me too. I took a bite into the crisp golden apple. She
asked, Ready for school? Yeah, I guess, I responded. Adios. I sluggishly hauled my five ton backpack
and pulled open the decorative wooden door. Bye! * * * I came home at 2:45 to an hour s worth of

The California s Prison System
California s prison system is facing a number of infrastructure changes as a result of a judicial
decision that came down from the United States Supreme Court, Governor of California et al v. Plata
et al. California s prison system was deemed inadequate and dangerous due to severe overcrowding
which led to needless suffering and death (Rogan, 2012, 262). The court ruled that the State must
reduce the number of inmates in California s thirty three state prisons. This ruling came about after
two class action lawsuits were filed, Coleman v. Wilson in 1990 and Plata v. Davis in 2001 (Rogan,
2012, 261). These lawsuits were filed by inmates that claimed they received poor medical and mental
health care within the State s prison health care system (Vicini, 2011,1). The evidence presented in
these cases showed several shortcomings in California s prison health care system (Rogan, 2012, 264).
These shortfalls were a result of severe overcrowding within California s thirty three state prisons. At
its peak in 2006, California s prisons were filled with approximately 172,000 inmates. However, these
prisons were designed to hold about 80,000 individuals (Vicini, 2011, 3). At that point, State prisons
were filled at 215% over capacity. Because of overcrowding, prison inmates faced chronic and severe
shortages in basic medical and mental health care services (Vicini, 2011, 1). Despite attempts by the
CDCR and the legislature to reduce the prison population between 2006 and 2011, the

The Death Of The Western World
If she felt any misgiving, my presence would prevent it from being too late, even at the supposed last
moment... But her look of reply was quite sufficient; she had not come without counting the cost. Her
belief in the Pythagorean doctrine of transmigration was firm and fixed; and she looked forward,
without a doubt, to secure for herself and her husband, by this sacrifice, a new life of happier
existence, and more refined enjoyments than the sordid realities which the world now offered... This
quote, recorded by Richard Hartley Kennedy, a 19th century British surgeon living in British India
exemplifies the almost macabre fascination with the Hindu rite of widow burning known as Sati that
the Western World has developed over the course of the last several hundred years. Perhaps, this
morbid obsession originated with the Western World seeing in Sati a Romeo and Juliette like
expression of true love. Subsequently, the West s fascination can perhaps be credited to the ensuing
human rights controversy that this rite has generated over the course of the past two hundred years.
Regardless as to the reason of why the West has taken an interest in this rite, I will attempt in this
paper to decipher and interpret this ritual mostly through the lens of a Western philosopher of religion,
Mircea Eliade. Eliade, in his work The Sacred and The Profane: The Nature of Religion, postulates
that for modern men to truly understand religion, they must remove themselves from contemporary

Essay on The Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam
Out in the middle of no where, an hour drive away from Las Vegas, NV lies one of the biggest dams
and power plants in the world. Built in the heart of the depression, it serves as more than just a barrier
from water to pass through. The concrete poured into the walls of Hoover Dam, are made by the sweat
and blood of hundreds of Americans who were looking to save themselves, and their families.
Residing on the Colorado River, the Hoover dam rises out of no where. Downstream from the Grand
Canyon, this structure is almost as impressive as the Grand Canyon. With its towering height, and
awesome power output, it is almost inconceivable that the technology required to build such a
structure would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The engineering design that went behind building such a massive barrier is unbelievable. While
building started in 1931, it is clear that there was a huge push to make this structure even decades
before the first shovel pierced the earth. The American agriculture in the southwest, was going through
a cycle of floods and droughts, this would make for very harsh growing conditions. Engineers felt that
it was possible to block the Colorado River, which would allow for regulation of the water and also
hydroelectric power. This massive project would not have been possible without the financing of a
very large company. During the middle of the depression, it was extremely hard to find a company
who was willing to front the money to start the project. One was found and for close to forty nine
million dollars, the dam was financed by six different smaller construction companies.
The first thing that needed to be constructed was roads that lead up to the dam site. Hoover dam isn t
anywhere close to any towns or cities. The railroads didn t even lead up to it. The first order of
business was to make the dam accessible by the cars and trains that would be bringing in the supplies
necessary to make the dam. In order to try and stop the water from flowing down to the dam site, a
cofferdam was built slightly upstream, and another slightly down stream from the dam site. This
cofferdam allowed for the diversion of water through large pipes to down below

English Learner Population Across California And L.a
English Learner Population across California and L.A.U.S.D According to California of Education
(2011), 23.2 percent of total registration of students in California public schools are English language
learners, and a 71 percent mainstream of these English learners are registered in the elementary grade
levels with 29 percent being registered in the secondary grade levels and a less than 1 percent being
put in an ungraded category, and according to LAUSD EL Data Dialog Inquiry (2011), as of 2009 33
percent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (L.A.U.S.D.) students alone are English language
learners, and of these 33 percent an approximated 94 percent are Spanish speakers and the other 6
percent is made of up many other languages fluctuating from Armenian to Russian.
School Programs Offered Following the Immigration Act of 1965, legislation was passed to contribute
the public schools in dealing with the influx of non English speaking students. Title VII of the
Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 supported programs for educating these students,
including transitional bilingual education programs (Echevarria and Graves 2011, p.350). This Act did
not fully articulate how to go about educating these students, so an unclear message was received or
not received in whether there was going to be a process of their first languages or a complete
transition to English. The outcome was that most ELs were consigned in English only classrooms

Pros Cons Of Landfills And Incineration

Pros and Cons of Landfills and Incineration
There are different ways Americans can dispose of the 200 million tons of garbage they generate each
year. In the 1930 s people started to use landfills, as opposed to open dumps, which drew insects and
vermin, causing disease. Landfills are made by digging holes in the in the ground and filling it with
waste products and then capped. The government safeguards landfills, and each landfill is exclusive to
the kind of waste it has. This method is controlled and monitored, as is the method of incineration.
Incineration is the burning of solid waste products at a temperature of 850 degrees. There are pros and
cons to each method.
One advantage to using landfills is that is that it separates the solid waste away from where the people
live. Another huge advantage is that landfills use methane extraction systems that collect gas in cells
and used for fuel. There is no shortage in waste products, so that means there will always be an
abundant supply. Landfills can be mined and waste can be reused for fuel. ... Show more content on

However, the pipes below the lined bottom that are designed to catch leachate, which is the run off of
water that passes through the waste and into the soil or underground water, doesn t always catch all of
the toxic substance. The toxins pollute lakes, streams and aquifers. The decomposition of waste also
gives off methane and carbon dioxide gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. If not properly
vented, it could result in an explosion. Another disadvantage is that the landfill will stay the same size
because of the improper mixture of elements for

Critical Thinking Process Analysis
A problem that I have faced in one of my college class was being able to start a paper on time and not
wait for the night before to do it. This was one of my main problem this past semester that I struggled
and had to come out with a solution to stop procastinating on papers. Everytime this will happen, I
will always go to sleep late and would had a hard time concentrating in my morning class the day
after. The hill climbing heuristic, the means ends heuristic and the analogy approach could help me
solve my problem. The means ends heuristic is appropiate because it requires you to identify the ends
that you want and the figure out the means or method that you will use to reach those ends (Feltovich
et al, Ward Morris, p.419).

It is to: Establish what lessons are to be learnt from the case about the way in which local professionals and organisations work individually and together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children; Identify clear lessons for both within and between agencies, how and within what timescales they will be acted on, and what is expected to change as a result; Improve intra and inter agency working; Better safeguarding and promote the welfare of children/young people. Serious case reviews are not enquiries about how a child died or was seriously harmed, or Who is responsible. These are matters for coroners and criminal courts respectively to identify. 1.5 2. • 4. Representation Of Women In Taming Of The Shrew By William... Written in the late 16th century during the Elizabethan era, the Taming of the Shrew is a play by William Shakespeare. It tells the narrative of Katherine, a termagant, rebellious shrew , daughter to father Baptista and sister to unassuming, obedient, attractive Bianca. In it, she is subjected to methods intended to restrain her aggressive behaviour, or effectively tame her, by Petruchio, a bachelor on the prowl for wealthy women. Having been performed throughout the centuries to create a historical assortment of varied adaptations, versions of Taming of the Shrew have changed in accordance with time periods and related shifting social expectations and culture. Discussed by literary academia extensively, a particular manifestation reflecting such changes among this cohort of portrayals is the representation of women. Notably, a clear trend about the societal attitudes at the time of presentation of versions can be assumed by examining and comparing the depiction of women in two adaptations; the Globe Theatre s directed by Toby Frow in 2012, a production expressing social norms from the Elizabethan era, and the BBC s ShakespeaRE told TV episode directed by David Richards (BBC Retold), set in modern times. The representation of women in these plays allow it to be concluded that the social expectations of women have progressed from domestically and professionally limiting to more supportive and liberal over time, with a specific focus on gender equality. • 5. The Physics Of The Gas 3. The size of the flame depends on the gas air mixture. If a high proportion of primary air enters the flame would be much smaller and concentrated giving higher flame temperatures. This gives rise to carbon dioxide because of unburned gases. For this the injector was again the great solution. As the gas comes out of the injector air enters into the stream and is mixed in the mixing tube with the gas before it comes out of the burner port. Combustion zone is where the gas burns in the primary air and generates heat in the flame and combustion is completed with the aid of the secondary air that is drawn into the air from the sides. Therefore, most burners are designed to have a throat that gives an aeration greater than optimum and also with a device for restricting the air flow so that the optimum aeration can be set for any given situation. 5. If the mixing chamber is small good mixing of gas air mixture cannot be done. So, a lot of energy will be wasted. Therefore, there are many ways of improving the gas air mixture: By providing a long mixing chamber serves in good mixing of gas air mixture. But the mixing tube will be very long. By using a venturi, with a pipe that tapers into the throat and then again tapers out smoothly. In this the air flow can be adjusted by screwing the injector into or out of the throat or by moving the throat relative to the injector. Fig 8: Throat or Diffuser [3] The air flow in the venturi can also be controlled with the help of a throttle valve which can be screwed to block the throat. Fig 9: Throat with Throttle [3] The venturi can be smaller than the cylindrical mixing tube. Therefore, it can be used in any place even if the space is limited. 6. • 6. Comparison Of Oedipus And Frogs To begin with, if Oedipus and Frogs are to be taken into consideration and the aspects of the plot dissected using the guidelines provided in Poetics, then based on Aristotle s definition of plot as organization of events, it can be stated that the structure of plot is the same for the two stories of opposing genres, for both have a beginning, a middle and an end one following after the other resulting in a well constructed plot not beginning or ending at any arbitrary point (Aristotle 10 13 14). However, while the character experiences a fall from good fortune to bad fortune in most tragedies, in most comedies the character experiences a fall from bad fortune to good fortune (Aristotle 21 22). Thus, in regards to Oedipus it can be noted that the story follows the general plot structure with Oedipus first facing good fortune briefly in the beginning of the play, as alluded to by the Elder who states that Oedipus came to Thebes, saved us from the Sphinx,/ And without any help, derived us from despair/... William Gaddis once said Power doesn t corrupt people, People corrupt power In Animal Farm and Mouseland both of the animals who have the power take over and create corrupt and unequal societies. This causes the societies to fall under the rules of greedy and selfish leaders. The authors of Animal Farm and Mouseland use the narrative techniques of characterization and conflict to illustrate messages about how power can destroy societies and take away the equality in the society. First, in Animal Farm and Mouseland the authors use characterization to show how power can destroy societies and can take away the equality that is in the society. For example, in Animal Farm, George Orwell uses the pigs as a way to show the different levels of importance. It shows how the other animals are always below the pigs. On pages 35 and 36 it states You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. I dislike them myself. Our sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this had been proven by science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well being of a pig. We pigs are brainworkers. Orwell uses the words absolutely necessary to the well being of a pig making it seem the most important to the pigs and no other animals. This means that the pigs started to take the things they wanted and decided they were the ones who had all of the power. This shows that the power they created could give them more equal rights than the others. In a similar ways Tommy Douglas uses the cats to show how the other animals are below them and the cats are the ones who have power. In paragraph 3 of Mouseland it states A government made up of big, fat, black cats. Douglas states fat, black, cats. characterizing the cats are lazy and useless. This means that in Mouseland there was a society run by animals who didn t do what they needed and they were lazy. This shows that just because of the way the cats are characterized they aren t good leaders and they have the power. This shows that in Animal Farm and Mouseland the people in power were characterized as greedy and selfish, but came off to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Reconstruction Of Reconstruction During The Civil War Describe and analyze Reconstruction. Did Reconstruction have any successes? The end of civil war in the United States of America brought about many problems, in particular for the South. Some of the problems were political, economic decay and social disorder. The war destroyed the plantations and crops thus causing many to starve to death while others became homeless. The reconstruction became the only hope for the people. Radical reconstruction began in 1867, which enabled the freed black men to have a voice in the government. Before the civil war, the Southern state had enacted laws that suppressed all African American. This fact angered many people from the North who were seeking to end slavery. Therefore, during the reconstruction era, the black people wanted their voices to be heard. The restoration process began with small plans that were put forward by President Lincoln as well as President Johnson. The two president s main aim was to combine the confederacy with the unions (Flanagan). This fact was called the presidential reconstruction. The Republicans were put into office to ensure that the freed people s rights were protected as well as to make sure that America was united. There are a plethora of subtypes of visual agnosia, which include prosopagnosia (the inability to recognize faces), achromatopsia (the inability to distinguish different colors), landmark agnosia (the inability to recognize buildings and places), etc. If one suffers from visual agnosia they can have multiple subtypes of associative agnosia. The Problem Of Computer Programming Education Through the Educate to Innovate Initiative, the current administration has made the case that investments in STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) are essential to maintaining the status of international competitiveness. But since the start of the program in 2009, the importance of computer programming education is still being misunderstood and inadequately addressed. Though the administration has tried to get more technology into schools, it s failed to teach kids what could really help them compete internationally which is coding. Computer programming is the driving force behind all forms of computer technology. Without programmers, these machines could be more innovative and capable than mankind could ever imagine, but if there is no one to program, there is no way for computers to perform needed tasks. Though technology has become such a key point in the national discussion on education, computer literacy is still sometimes confused with computer science. While computer literacy refers to word processing and knowledgeable use of the Internet, computer science refers to the study of algorithmic processes, hardware and software designs, and ways to impact society with technological innovation. • 25. The Ozone Depletion The earth atmosphere has many layers; the first two layers are the troposphere, the stratosphere, and the ozone layer which sits in the lower area of the stratosphere. The troposphere layer is where a lot of human activity occurs, such as planes and mountain climbing. The next layer is the stratosphere and this is where the ozone layer is located as well. The ozone layer helps protect people from ultraviolet radiation that mainly come from the sun. The ozone layer can be different depending on the season and the location. Over the past few years, the ozone layer has been depleting because of human activity. The main issue of the depletion of the ozone layer is the man made products that have been created and has cause bad effect on the ozone layer itself. The ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that protects all living things on Earth from damaging ultraviolet rays that come from the sun. With the ozone layer depleting, it would be difficult for anything to survive much longer or not at all. The ozone acts as a shield to protect living things from absorbing the ultraviolet ray and keeps them from being damaged. Many man made materials are causing the ozone layer to deplete at a faster rate. The author states, Emissions of chlorine and bromine from CFCs and halons are to blame for excessive stratospheric ozone depletion (Ivanovich and Calm). This type of emission is going into the atmosphere and is breaking down the ozone layer. Consequently, this is resulting in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The images will be evaluated based off of Victorian values so as to see how it would have been interpreted by citizens of Victorian England and the English colonies. One of the images is a photography/painting of an afternoon tea in the Victorian era and the other is an advertisement for cooking stoves. During the Victorian era, exploration, industrialization and colonization where at their peak and as such the values of the people of that time could be seen in their advertisements and other art works. The Victorians often emulated Queen Victoria and followed the trends which she had started. In the scene all the men are either standing or sitting on a window pane while all the seated people are women. This connotes clear gender role allocation between gentleman and ladies as the ladies are offered the seats. Gender also plays a role as women were meant to be pretty and cheerful hence the white draping dresses worn by the other women. There are elements of the domestic life and weakness and flaws lead to social problems. The servants are dressed in clothes to separate them from the higher class people and they generally hover towards the back so as to remain unseen and unheard. You have the lesser people such as the slaves and lower class doing the serving. The men are clean and well groomed as are the ladies connoting a sense of self improvement and pride. • 27. A Beautiful Day In My Life Five more minutes, I groaned as I layed in my bed one cloudless Monday morning while my mom annoyingly stood in the doorway of my room, rapidly clapping her hands to wake me up. How late were you up last night? she questioned as she resiliently clapped. Applications and essays, I told her as I rolled out of bed. Still working on Georgetown. Georgetown?! It s already been three weeks! I know, I know. I m putting a lot of effort into this. After all, this is my life, is it not? Although this is a lot of work... She looked at me as if I had some sort of careless attitude. She was right though; I did. I got ready for school, went downstairs, and gazed out the window in the living room to see the gorgeous sunlight shine through the skyscrapers. Beautiful view, I remarked as my mom walked down the open riser staircase. The tall towers that were scattered across Manhattan stood right in front of my window. I walked towards the kitchen and grabbed an apple from the fridge. I m very glad you picked this one out of all the apartments we looked at. Me too, Lucas, my mother assured as I cleaned the alluring apple under the running faucet on the island, me too. I took a bite into the crisp golden apple. She asked, Ready for school? Yeah, I guess, I responded. Adios. I sluggishly hauled my five ton backpack and pulled open the decorative wooden door. Bye! * * * I came home at 2:45 to an hour s worth of homework: finish an essay for written expressions, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The California s Prison System California s prison system is facing a number of infrastructure changes as a result of a judicial decision that came down from the United States Supreme Court, Governor of California et al v. Plata et al. California s prison system was deemed inadequate and dangerous due to severe overcrowding which led to needless suffering and death (Rogan, 2012, 262). The court ruled that the State must reduce the number of inmates in California s thirty three state prisons. This ruling came about after two class action lawsuits were filed, Coleman v. Wilson in 1990 and Plata v. Davis in 2001 (Rogan, 2012, 261). These lawsuits were filed by inmates that claimed they received poor medical and mental health care within the State s prison health care system (Vicini, 2011,1). The evidence presented in these cases showed several shortcomings in California s prison health care system (Rogan, 2012, 264). These shortfalls were a result of severe overcrowding within California s thirty three state prisons. At its peak in 2006, California s prisons were filled with approximately 172,000 inmates. However, these prisons were designed to hold about 80,000 individuals (Vicini, 2011, 3). At that point, State prisons were filled at 215% over capacity. Because of overcrowding, prison inmates faced chronic and severe shortages in basic medical and mental health care services (Vicini, 2011, 1). Despite attempts by the CDCR and the legislature to reduce the prison population between 2006 and 2011, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Death Of The Western World If she felt any misgiving, my presence would prevent it from being too late, even at the supposed last moment... But her look of reply was quite sufficient; she had not come without counting the cost. Her belief in the Pythagorean doctrine of transmigration was firm and fixed; and she looked forward, without a doubt, to secure for herself and her husband, by this sacrifice, a new life of happier existence, and more refined enjoyments than the sordid realities which the world now offered... This quote, recorded by Richard Hartley Kennedy, a 19th century British surgeon living in British India exemplifies the almost macabre fascination with the Hindu rite of widow burning known as Sati that the Western World has developed over the course of the last several hundred years. Perhaps, this morbid obsession originated with the Western World seeing in Sati a Romeo and Juliette like expression of true love. Subsequently, the West s fascination can perhaps be credited to the ensuing human rights controversy that this rite has generated over the course of the past two hundred years. Regardless as to the reason of why the West has taken an interest in this rite, I will attempt in this paper to decipher and interpret this ritual mostly through the lens of a Western philosopher of religion, Mircea Eliade. Eliade, in his work The Sacred and The Profane: The Nature of Religion, postulates that for modern men to truly understand religion, they must remove themselves from contemporary ... • 30. Essay on The Hoover Dam The Hoover Dam Out in the middle of no where, an hour drive away from Las Vegas, NV lies one of the biggest dams and power plants in the world. Built in the heart of the depression, it serves as more than just a barrier from water to pass through. The concrete poured into the walls of Hoover Dam, are made by the sweat and blood of hundreds of Americans who were looking to save themselves, and their families. Residing on the Colorado River, the Hoover dam rises out of no where. Downstream from the Grand Canyon, this structure is almost as impressive as the Grand Canyon. With its towering height, and awesome power output, it is almost inconceivable that the technology required to build such a structure would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The engineering design that went behind building such a massive barrier is unbelievable. While building started in 1931, it is clear that there was a huge push to make this structure even decades before the first shovel pierced the earth. The American agriculture in the southwest, was going through a cycle of floods and droughts, this would make for very harsh growing conditions. Engineers felt that it was possible to block the Colorado River, which would allow for regulation of the water and also hydroelectric power. This massive project would not have been possible without the financing of a very large company. During the middle of the depression, it was extremely hard to find a company who was willing to front the money to start the project. One was found and for close to forty nine million dollars, the dam was financed by six different smaller construction companies. The first thing that needed to be constructed was roads that lead up to the dam site. Hoover dam isn t anywhere close to any towns or cities. The railroads didn t even lead up to it. The first order of business was to make the dam accessible by the cars and trains that would be bringing in the supplies necessary to make the dam. In order to try and stop the water from flowing down to the dam site, a cofferdam was built slightly upstream, and another slightly down stream from the dam site. This cofferdam allowed for the diversion of water through large pipes to down below ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

English Learner Population Across California And L.a English Learner Population across California and L.A.U.S.D According to California of Education (2011), 23.2 percent of total registration of students in California public schools are English language learners, and a 71 percent mainstream of these English learners are registered in the elementary grade levels with 29 percent being registered in the secondary grade levels and a less than 1 percent being put in an ungraded category, and according to LAUSD EL Data Dialog Inquiry (2011), as of 2009 33 percent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (L.A.U.S.D.) students alone are English language learners, and of these 33 percent an approximated 94 percent are Spanish speakers and the other 6 percent is made of up many other languages fluctuating from Armenian to Russian. School Programs Offered Following the Immigration Act of 1965, legislation was passed to contribute the public schools in dealing with the influx of non English speaking students. Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 supported programs for educating these students, including transitional bilingual education programs (Echevarria and Graves 2011, p.350). This Act did not fully articulate how to go about educating these students, so an unclear message was received or not received in whether there was going to be a process of their first languages or a complete transition to English. The outcome was that most ELs were consigned in English only classrooms without suitable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Pros Cons Of Landfills And Incineration Dana Merola Professor Muhammad Rehan ENVR1009 16 July 2009 Pros and Cons of Landfills and Incineration There are different ways Americans can dispose of the 200 million tons of garbage they generate each year. In the 1930 s people started to use landfills, as opposed to open dumps, which drew insects and vermin, causing disease. Landfills are made by digging holes in the in the ground and filling it with waste products and then capped. The government safeguards landfills, and each landfill is exclusive to the kind of waste it has. This method is controlled and monitored, as is the method of incineration. Incineration is the burning of solid waste products at a temperature of 850 degrees. There are pros and cons to each method. One advantage to using landfills is that is that it separates the solid waste away from where the people live. Another huge advantage is that landfills use methane extraction systems that collect gas in cells and used for fuel. There is no shortage in waste products, so that means there will always be an abundant supply. Landfills can be mined and waste can be reused for fuel. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the pipes below the lined bottom that are designed to catch leachate, which is the run off of water that passes through the waste and into the soil or underground water, doesn t always catch all of the toxic substance. The toxins pollute lakes, streams and aquifers. The decomposition of waste also gives off methane and carbon dioxide gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. If not properly vented, it could result in an explosion. Another disadvantage is that the landfill will stay the same size because of the improper mixture of elements for ... • 33. Critical Thinking Process Analysis A problem that I have faced in one of my college class was being able to start a paper on time and not wait for the night before to do it. This was one of my main problem this past semester that I struggled and had to come out with a solution to stop procastinating on papers. Everytime this will happen, I will always go to sleep late and would had a hard time concentrating in my morning class the day after. The hill climbing heuristic, the means ends heuristic and the analogy approach could help me solve my problem. The means ends heuristic is appropiate because it requires you to identify the ends that you want and the figure out the means or method that you will use to reach those ends (Feltovich et al, Ward Morris, p.419).
