Discussion of Virtue in Meno by Socrates
Plato reveals the views of Socrates on the query of whether virtue is knowledge and whether virtue
may be taught in a number of dialogues, mainly in Meno. In the dialogue, Socrates creates several
differing arguments on virtue, which include the definition of virtue and questions on whether persons
can attain it. In addition, Plato demonstrates the means by which virtue can be obtained, as well as
ponders on whether persons are born virtuous, whether virtue may be taught or it is an added factor for
righteous individuals (Novelguide.com n.pag.). The paper will focus on Socrates query of whether
virtue is knowledge as well as highlight whether virtue may be taught. After Meno asks his initial
question, that is whether a person can be able to be taught virtue, or a person can gain the same
through nature, Socrates assents to continue but argues that a common understanding is required since
neither of them could be capable of comprehensively explaining the meaning of virtue. Then Meno
was made to consent that if virtue is not knowledge then one cannot be taught virtue. However, if it is
knowledge, it can be taught (Holbo and Waring). Socrates asserts that a person can teach something
only if he or she is acquainted with what it is that he/she is teaching. A person who does not know how
to drive a vehicle himself of herself is unlikely to be capable of teaching another person how to do so.
Meno and Socrates fully agree that no one exactly knows what virtue means, and due to

Napoleon s Buttons
The book Napoleon s buttons was an informative story that mixed slow and confusing chemistry with
history. This mix allowed a history buff like me to get involved with the chemical make up and
structure of common elements. Penny Le Couteur and Jay Burreson used this book to explain their
theories on how key historical events are related to the chemical make up of important elements. In
essay after essay they explain the history and events. In addition, they go further in depth to explain
the details of particular elements and why they are important. The historical aspects of this book are
what grabbed my attention. The long string of facts otherwise would have been too confusing for even
the smartest of readers. For example, the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a historical perspective it was intriguing to discover how dyes affected the hierarchy in the
ancient world. The repeated use of dyes represented a transition in humanity from simple hunting and
gathering societies; to well developed structured governments and economies where people focused
less on survival and more on status. Colors in ancient times represented political, military, and social
status. Without the discovery of dyes kings would be clothed just like the normal people giving them a
less godly appearance and less power. Even today certain connotations exist with colors like black for
evil white for good, etc... The authors include this essay to demonstrate man s first foray into
chemistry by mixing and blending dyes to create more extravagant colors to sell. The lust for colorful
clothes drove vendors to create more eccentric dyes, thereby forcing them to utilize experimental
chemistry to create new shades and hues. The book here focuses too much on the historical aspects. I
can see the relationship but it is weak and describing the chemical make up of colors doesn t explain
why it relates to history. Essay twelve discusses a dark time for chemists. Suddenly, in the mid 1500 s
chemists went from being priests and healers to witches and devils. Chemistry during this period is
limited and men known as alchemists ran the show. These men used herbs metals and spices to create
useful substances and herbal remedies. Helpful as they

Mlab Concert Review
On November 18, 2015, I attended a UAB concert involving jazz combos and a guitar ensemble. This
concert was filled with amazing musicians, intricate solos, and thick harmonies. There were three jazz
combos and one guitar ensemble; the first set was the guitar ensemble, which contained four guitarists
and one bass player. The ensemble consisted of four songs: Swing It, a swing style song; Samba #1 ; A
Child is Born, a waltz; and Bill s Bay. The main theme of Bill s Bay was very catchy and memorable,
and the ensemble s most impressive player to me was Michael Galanti on the bass guitar. His solos
involved precise pizzicato and quick movement that I have never witnessed in a bass player. Next, the
series of jazz combos began, and a younger group of UAB students started to play. Their first song
was The Preacher by Horace Silver, and this song was the only song with lyrics. The singer was nearly
impossible to hear because she was singing in piano while the other group members were playing in
fortissimo. Also, I was startled by how loud the brass instruments sounded in the concert hall;
however, this is due to the trumpet being a haut instrument. Then, another combo began playing, and
this combo was under the guidance of Carlos Pino. The group brought more energy and more skill,
and this is shown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The four songs in their set were either composed or arranged by a member of the group. Due to
experience, each member was comfortable on stage and highly skilled; therefore, every solo was near
perfection. This combo was unique because it had a trombone player, Henry Panion IV. Throughout
this entire concert, every performance had one thing in common. Every player seemed to be having
fun and loved to play jazz. This was my first opportunity to go to a jazz concert, and it allowed me to
hear a completely new style of music. It opened my eyes to a great genre of American

Cook County Corrections Case Study
Cook County Department of Corrections Misappropriations If you re from Chicago, you know that
crime in this city, let alone the county we live in Cook County is very high. After 72 hours spent at
local police departments, people who are arrested are sent to Cook County jail to be processed; her the
possible charges against them, and make bail if one has been given to them. According to
theatlantic.com, there are approximately 9,000 to 11,000 inmates (male and female) currently
incarcerated at Cook County. The cook county sheriff s website agrees with those numbers and adds
that 100,000 people pass through their system every year. As taxpayers, we should be considered of
how much money goes to fund the cook county jail. According to the Chicago ... Show more content

All of rights and privileges I have listed makes it sound like jail is ok but that isn t the case. There s a
lot of flaws to how the funds for each of them is being misappropriated. The company that make it
possible for inmates to communicate with their loved ones is called Securus. Securus has come under
fire for the set phone rates they ve made. In Cook County phone contract cost inmates and families,
Rod Wilderboer talks about how families/friends have to choose between putting money on their
Securus account to receive calls from a loved one who is incarcerated. In this article, it comes to light
that Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle approved the contract deal with Securus. Securus
gives back more than half of the money they make from all of the calls inmates make. Calls rates are
ridiculously high some can go from $5.00 to $7.00 for only 30 minutes which includes a few
interruptions during each call. Compared to rates from other county jails and even state prisons these
rates are too much for families and friends who want to stay in touch with their loved

Around Ad 1200, Tahitian Explorers Came Across A Small
Around AD 1200, Tahitian explorers came across a small tropical archipelago consisting of eight main
islands and a few smaller islets. They settled there and the rich ethnic culture and religion of native
Hawaiians developed in isolation, untouched by the outside world, for the next five hundred years.
Each island had their own chief that ruled under the guidelines of the Kapu religion. Their mystical
polytheistic views affected every aspect of life from lifestyle habits to lawmaking. But in mid January
of 1778 a group of European explorers led by Captain James Cook arrived on their island home. These
visitors brought valuable trade opportunities, but also new technology and foreign disease. By the mid

secessionists had already begun fighting to regain its sovereignty. Hawaii is a land that many believe
was corrupted by outsiders, occupied by a foreign military, and overcome illegally, in turn leading
them to challenge the it s statehood and strive for the return of its sovereignty. While there are a
number of nationalist movements in Hawaii, there is none more popular or widely known than the
Nation of Hawaii. Led by the charismatic Dennis Pu uhonua Bumpy Kanahele, no other organization
has made as much progress into the matter of recovering sovereignty for native Hawaiians. Beginning
in 1989, while the push for federal recognition for American natives was happening across the United
States Kanahele laid the foundation for the village of Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo that is now considered
sovereign land on the island of Hawaii. His group occupied a number of places including Makapuu
Point Lighthouse and Kaupo beach in order to protest the treatment of native Hawaiians and the
destruction being done to their sacred land by big development projects. They agreed to stop the
occupations in exchange for an area of land that had previously been ceded to the U.S. Kanahele and
his advisors signed a fifty five year lease with the

Margaret Atwood Feminist Literature
Margaret Atwood: a Social Activist Through Feminist Literature The 1980s signified the continuation
of an era of social and political upheaval in the United States of America. At the forefront was a
socially conservative agenda that aimed to rescind women s rights only ratified less than a decade
before, a marked display of the nation s desire to uphold traditional values that defined the preceding
generation (Françoise). Among the devastating political climate, however, was Margaret Atwood: a
voice that refused to be silenced, a progressive storyteller who interwove her writings with feminist
themes that pushed boundaries and defied the status quo (Napierkowski). Her prolific writing career is
full of poems, essays, short stories, and novels that have permanently altered the perception of
Canadian literature, while never ceasing to shed light on pertinent cultural and social issues. Margaret
Eleanor Atwood was born on November 18, 1939 in Ottawa, Canada. As a child, she moved back and
forth from Toronto and rural northern Canada, at the same time fostering a passion for writing at an
early age. She would later earn bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of Toronto and
Radcliffe College, respectively. In addition, Atwood has held various teaching positions at universities
throughout North America ( Editors ). She is internationally recognized as one of Canada s most
prolific and impactful writers, most recently winning the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement
Award in 2017 ( Awards ). Perhaps Atwood s earliest influence can be found in her upbringing. Her
exposure to both metropolitan Toronto and rural Quebec created a colorful childhood, absent of the
comfortable monotony that plagues the youth of others. Her father, an entomologist and avid reader,
helped cultivate in his daughter a love of nature (Biography.com). Atwood expressed how her parents
challenged gender roles in a 1978 interview with The New York Times:
They expected me to make use of my intelligence and abilities and did not pressure me into getting
married ... remember that all this was taking place in the 1950s, when marriage was seen as the only
desirable goal. My mother is a very lively person who would rather skate

The Issue Of Political Participation
Political participation is a right afforded to United States citizens; it is our civic duty to participate and
is ultimately a privilege. The founders believed that it was the newly founded government s
responsibility to protect the basic rights of the people. With those beliefs they made the United States
of America, a two tiered, three branch democracy and therefore the people hold the power to freely
elect who they want to represent them in government. The local representatives, we elect push for
laws of interest to the majority and provide them with the resources that they need. The president
implements and enforces laws that Congress passes. With such social ramifications and power granted
to government representatives it would seem as though nearly everyone should be invested in political
matters and actively engaged in political participation. Among the easiest ways to get involved
politically is through the voting process and elections, others are symbolic participation, civil society
participation, protesting, marching, contacting public officials, being part of election campaigns and
even running for office. While voting is among the easiest ways to be a part of this democracy, the
turnout is low. The right to vote has opened up to a larger number of people through legislation, but
still the turnout rate is low. There are factors that show a correlation in the chance of whether or not
one will vote, and are very telling in some instances. Voting in the United

Decision support systems assist managers who must make decisions that are not highly structured,
often called unstructured or semi structured decisions. A decision is considered unstructured if there
are no clear procedures for making the decision and if not all the factors to be considered in the
decision can be readily identified in advance. Judgement of the manager plays a vital role in decision
making where the problem is not structured. The decision support system supports, but does not
replace, judgement of manager.
4. Office Automation Systems
Office automation systems are among the newest and most rapidly expanding computer based
information systems. They are being developed with the hopes and expectations that they will increase
the efficiency and productivity of office workers typists, secretaries, administrative assistants, staff
professionals, managers and the like. Many organisations have taken the First step toward automating
their offices. Often this step involves the use of word processing equipment to facilitate the typing,
storing, revising and printing of textual materials. Another development is a computer based
communications system such as electronic mail which allows people to communicate in an electronic
mode through computer terminals. An office automation system can be described as a multi function,
integrated computer based system that allows many office activities to be performed in an electronic
mode.

Reality Is A Hard Trail
Reality is a hard trail that everyone in the world has to face. Reality comes with many aspects that are
constantly changing and that can be confusing or scary to many people. Coming to terms with reality
is difficult sometimes but, no one must shy from aspects of reality for that reason. If they were to shy
away and hide themselves from knowledge or experience then they will never be able to overcome
their conflictions with the issue. In order to grow, people have to properly come to understand and
face harsh realities. There are no safe spaces or trigger warnings in most places of the world. That s
the lesson that the incoming students of University of Chicago, whom may expect the inclusion of
trigger warning and safe spaces into the education system, need to understand. A safe space is an area
located anywhere, where anyone can escape from things they find harmful, such as controversial
topics or different ideals. They are also able to fully express themselves, without having to worry
about being uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe. A trigger warning is an essentially a warning that
the presented content through verbal or visual means, may be considered disturbing or upsetting to
many. Some students of Chicago University may think that their school is in need of these concepts in
order to protect themselves however the University has rejected the idea in a letter they sent, on the
basis that it could prove harmful to their academic freedom. The University of

public or school so that people will understand that exercise is something that will prevent obesity and
will greatly improve people s health, which could also affect the length of a person s lifespan. Along
the starting point, assistance from other organizations and programs are needed in order to carry out

The Causes And Effects Of Stress

Stress is something that is inevitable, but what people do not always understand is the fact that
anxiety, depression, sadness, and stress all impact your physical well being. All of these factors trigger
a lower immune system, now picture being in poverty with fear and stress, what people do not get is
the fact that it is not just being hungry or feeling less clothed, it is the feeling of believing you that are
unwanted, uncared for, and unloved. The term stress filled with uncertainty that is used to describe a
dreadful continuous event or responding to events. Growing up in poverty can lead to poor health and

This also includes inadequate health and educational resources which creates a toxic environment,
fewer social opportunities and more exposure to trauma. It is important to recognize that stress is a

characteristic, society relies on fairness, independence, and justice. To correlate to the composition,
Jackie Robinson struggled for equality and for freedom of his race. African Americans were never
allowed to engage in the majors before Robinson came to the plate. Therefore, he was able to open up
a door of possibility for the lower class and brought a sense of optimism and determination. He strived

common types of the government in the modern world. Which give us clear idea of who defied the

Genre Theory Paper
Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to categorize films. Genre are dependent on
different factors such as who the director is, story line, and audience expectations (Azia, n.d). Genres
are types or categories and genre films that are usually recognizable as part of a certain genre
(Goodykoontz, B., Jacobs, 2014, section 4.1). To better understand genre there are several examples to
look at. When watching a fantasy film we know that within the movie we will expect to see unreal,
magical, or impossible situations, characters or settings often overlapping with various other genres
(GoodyKoontz, 2014). In musical films you will see that the film mainly focuses on songs. Genres
also have subgenres which are sub categories of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of strictly dialogue, the narrative may from time to time be advanced by characters breaking
into song. Numerous subgenres exist within the musical genre from musical comedy to musical drama
to animated musicals to musical documentaries and concert films (Goodykoontz, B., Jacobs, 2014,
section 4.4). A scene that helps classify Snow White and the Seven dwarfs into the animated musical
genre is the scene where all the dwarfs are working hard at the jewelry mine and once work gets over
they walk home in a single line singing the song heigh ho heigh ho its home from work we go as they
dance and skip on their walk home from work. Another scene that illustrates a musical/fantasy genre is
the scene where Snow White discovers the dwarf s cabin and with help from the animals of the forest
she starts to clean the house while singing whistle while you work. I m sure we would all love if our
animals could help us with chores around the house but that will most likely never happen. This is a
perfect example of a movie with fantasy genre. The fantasy genre has events that occur outside the
ordinary laws that operate within the universe. Magic is central to the fantasy genre and fantasy stories
often involve journeys and quests like the wicked queen on a quest to kill Snow White. There are three
different ways that fantasy writers set up their worlds. Some films begin and end in a fantasy world,
others start in the real world and a third type of fantasy is set in the real world but elements of magic
intrude upon it (Dewan,

Pros And Cons Of Concealed Weapons
Christopher Ingraham brings up a very valid point: how would you feel if you couldn t carry a
concealed weapon? Fifty six percent of Americans would feel safer if more people carried concealed
weapons (Ingraham). Now that s not an overwhelming number, but anything over fifty percent is still
a number that gets your attention. The reason for this is there have been a rise in shootings. People are
starting to realize that if they are allowed to carry concealed weapons, they will have a chance to
protect themselves. Ten years ago, only 27 percent of Americans prefered to be allowed to carry
concealed weapons (Ingraham). Now that s an overwhelming difference.
Gun concealment is an ongoing conflict and for a valid reason. Both sides bring up very good points.
Those sides being, we should be allowed to carry concealed weapons and we should not be able to
carry concealed weapons. This is where things get tricky. People carried concealed weapons anyway.
Illegally. With this happening, the people who are not carrying a concealed weapon are obviously at a

The number of shootings today is absolutely horrendous. The number of shootings that are done to a
fire armless person is even more devastating. The number one way to stop all of these deaths is to
fight fire with fire . People want this to stop. If more states do allow gun concealment, the amount of
gun violence would decline and show an overwhelming difference.

The Family As A Social Institution
In order for society to meet the basic social needs of its members, social institutions, which are not
buildings, or an organization or even people, but a system whose of social norms, mores and folkways
that help make people feel important. Social institutions, according to our textbook, is defined as a
fundamental component of this organization in which individuals, occupying defined statues, are
regulated by social norms, public opinion, law and religion (Amato 2004, p.961). Social institutions
are meant to meet people s basic needs and enable the society to survive. Because social institutions
prescribe socially accepted beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors, they exert considerable social
control over individuals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition historically is people related by blood, marriage, or adoption . The U.S. Census defines
family as a group of people united by the ties of marriage, blood, or adoption and constituting a single
household . William Goode, a sociologist who did research on family life, marriage and divorce,
defines family as at least 2 adult persons of opposite sex who reside together, have division of labor,
engage in economic and social exchange, share many things in common, have parental relations with
their children and the children have sibling relations .
Sociologist William F. Ogburn argues that the industrialization and urbanization of society has
stripped the family of many of the traditional functions. Due to this factor alone, the family s role has
been diminished to something strictly psychological, and that is to socialize children, and to provide
emotional support for family members. Talcott Parsons defined the family as serving a basic function
for society at large that included sexual behavior norms and values. There is a growing opinion that
social and civic agencies are taking over parental responsibilities due to two income families, a burst
in technology over the past forty years and single parent homes. The old days of neighbors visiting
neighbors, communities where people knew each other well and children roamed from house

Gatsby s parties are notoriously extravagant, occupied by shallow guests, alcohol, and his desire to
catch Daisy s attention. There are pages of the novel dedicated to demonstrate the luxury of wealth.
When Nick describes the plot between West Egg and New York, however, readers are met with grim
imagery that lasts but a few powerful sentences; Nick describes the land as a valley of ashes a
fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes
take the forms of houses and chimneys . . . of men who move dimly and already crumbling through
the powdery air (Fitzgerald 26). This is a stark contrast to the ritzy lifestyle in the East and West Egg.
It is a glimpse into the realities of those who do not have money to sweep them away from their
worries. And when Nick runs into Tom Buchannan, months after Gatsby s symbolic death and
desolate funeral, Nick cannot thwart his disdain. He says, They were careless people, Tom and Daisy
they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast
carelessness, or whatever kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made . .
. (Fitzgerald 191). This story does not preach a tale of rags to riches, but acts a critic to American
society and wealth. In his own subtle way, Fitzgerald writes about the demon that still plagues the
country today: classism. Classism, as defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary, is the prejudice

How Does Photography Affect The World
With the development of modern technology, cameras have now become an optical instrument for
recording or capturing images, which can be stored locally, transmitted to other locations or even both.
Since that, photography starts to appear as a common activity for people to play with and it is also one
of the most outstanding factors to affect different countries with architectural style. The first thing that
photo affect us is the cultural identity and personal characteristics, people nowadays are gradually
losing their personal identity along with the development of photography. Secondly, through the

We regard ourself as some virtual characters on social media, we post photos of ourself, the food we
eat or maybe just some random photos we take, all of these photos become a part of ourselves.
However, people always want to show the good side of themselves, so photography and internet
become a perfect tool to get rid of all the bad defects. In other words, everyone is building a new self
through the internet. One perfect example would be the software Photoshop, photoshop was originally
innovated to show grayscale images on a monochrome display, and later on, developed into a full
fledged editing program (wiki photoshop), but it is now more considered as a tool for skin whitening
or face lifting .No wonder Photoshop is named to be an unnatural tool, it is hard to distinguish the
truth behind a photo, in which can cause people to recognize themselves in a wrong way. From the
article to what extent does photoshop affect society written by Nikol, it says, Daily, we are bombarded
by the appearance of flawless celebrities in television, advertisements, and commercials. This wrong
perception of a perfect body has led to the creation of numerous campaigns that are fighting the use of

The metro and rail would become the largest private sector projects if they get approved. The MPA

In 2008 a new BOT (Build Operate Transfer) law was passed as Kuwait recognized the requirement to

would be transferred to the government. Despite all the optimism, the government did not sign any
BOT contracts and 31.4% projects or $61.2 billion worth of projects were held or called off. Promises

In the text, the author mentions the similarity between Miles Snow and Porter s generic typology
where the prospector model in Miles and Snow emphasizes differentiation and the defender business
typically emphasizes low cost (Parnell, 2014, p. 197). Porter s generic typology has both
differentiation and low cost considerations in the model with the focus being based on economic
conditions and economic influence. In light of the similarities, the difference between these two
business strategies are set in their core beliefs and concepts. Miles and Snow present their four models
from a philosophical approach to business strategy and display the models benefits through real time

Educating America about Legalization of Marijuana
Over 3000,000 people a year are arrested because of it in our country. It s recreational usage boomed
in the 1960 s and by the 1980 s one half of all college students had tried it. Once a simple plant,
cannabis satria, or marijuana, has become one of the most controversial topics of the 20th century.
Although illegal for some time now in the United States, we know of its widespread availability and
usage. Once a huge threat to society, it is now being overlooked as we turn to the seemingly more
serious problems of cocaine and heroin. But should we be taking a second look at it, cracking down on
enforcement and trying as hard as possible to rid our country of this drug?

drugs to five schedules. Cannabis came under schedule 1, the most restrictive. Drugs outlined under

Cannabis was not recognized as a medicine by the federal government , and in order to dispense it,
states had to conduct special research and receive FDA approval. Because this was so hard to do, only
10 states actually established programs in which cannabis was used as a medicine. Patients had to

Sexualization Of Barbie Doll
Barbie is viewed as an overly sexualized doll that is responsible for portraying unreasonable body
image expectations. A study was completed with forty five girls ranging in age from four to seven
(Sherman Zurbriggen, 2014). Two different Barbie dolls as well as a Mrs. Potato Head doll were used
in the experiment, with Mrs. Potato Head serving as the control (Sherman Zurbriggen, 2014). After
playing with the dolls and then being asked questions about their future career opportunities, the girls
who played with the Barbie dolls displayed a larger gap in male dominated career choice versus
female dominated career choice (Sherman Zurbriggen, 2014). The girls that played with Mrs. Potato
Head showed a relatively small difference in choices between male and female dominated professions
(Sherman Zurbriggen, 2014).
Constantly reinventing and differentiating their products from competitors drives Mattel. Barbie has
now become a princess herself to reintroduce her to young girls who are already familiar with Disney
Princesses (Orr, 2009). Making Barbie a Princess increased sales of the Barbie line by two percent in

Black Holes Research Papers
Black holes are an interesting phenomenon, but if they get close enough to Earth, Earth would be gone
in a matter of seconds. We know that they use a strong gravitational pull, but where does the matter
go? How are they formed? How do we know they even exist?
Black holes are formed by an interesting phenomenon. When stars collapse on themselves, they create
what we know as black holes. This collapse can cause a giant supernova, which can blast a part of the
star into space. This largest black holes astronomers believe, were created when the Big Bang
happened. This means black holes grow over time.
There are three main types of black holes primordial, stellar, as well as supermassive. Primordial black
holes are smallest of the three. This means they can t suck in as big of objects as the other two. These

They can t directly use a telescope to see black holes. Scientist can study by missing matter on other
objects. Since black holes suck objects in if there is missing a part we know a black hole was there.
Also by the size of the missing matter, we can tell if the black hole is a primordial, stellar, and
supermassive type. Luckily it s unlikely that black holes will swallow Earth. If a black hole swallows
the sun, then the black hole would take the sun s place. The black hole would take up the mass of the
sun, meaning the planets would continue to orbit. But, this time the planets would be orbiting a black
hole. Albert Einstein first thought of black holes. He thought of the general theory. The person thought
who thought of the name black hole was named John Wheeler. The first black holes was discovered in
1971. They have been showing up ever since. Black holes can be scary to think about, but amazing at
the same time. The fact that they can have such a heavy gravitational pull that not even light can
escape is fascinating. Luckily we will probaly destroy Earth before a black hole eats it

  • 2. Discussion of Virtue in Meno by Socrates Plato reveals the views of Socrates on the query of whether virtue is knowledge and whether virtue may be taught in a number of dialogues, mainly in Meno. In the dialogue, Socrates creates several differing arguments on virtue, which include the definition of virtue and questions on whether persons can attain it. In addition, Plato demonstrates the means by which virtue can be obtained, as well as ponders on whether persons are born virtuous, whether virtue may be taught or it is an added factor for righteous individuals (Novelguide.com n.pag.). The paper will focus on Socrates query of whether virtue is knowledge as well as highlight whether virtue may be taught. After Meno asks his initial question, that is whether a person can be able to be taught virtue, or a person can gain the same through nature, Socrates assents to continue but argues that a common understanding is required since neither of them could be capable of comprehensively explaining the meaning of virtue. Then Meno was made to consent that if virtue is not knowledge then one cannot be taught virtue. However, if it is knowledge, it can be taught (Holbo and Waring). Socrates asserts that a person can teach something only if he or she is acquainted with what it is that he/she is teaching. A person who does not know how to drive a vehicle himself of herself is unlikely to be capable of teaching another person how to do so. Meno and Socrates fully agree that no one exactly knows what virtue means, and due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Napoleon s Buttons The book Napoleon s buttons was an informative story that mixed slow and confusing chemistry with history. This mix allowed a history buff like me to get involved with the chemical make up and structure of common elements. Penny Le Couteur and Jay Burreson used this book to explain their theories on how key historical events are related to the chemical make up of important elements. In essay after essay they explain the history and events. In addition, they go further in depth to explain the details of particular elements and why they are important. The historical aspects of this book are what grabbed my attention. The long string of facts otherwise would have been too confusing for even the smartest of readers. For example, the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From a historical perspective it was intriguing to discover how dyes affected the hierarchy in the ancient world. The repeated use of dyes represented a transition in humanity from simple hunting and gathering societies; to well developed structured governments and economies where people focused less on survival and more on status. Colors in ancient times represented political, military, and social status. Without the discovery of dyes kings would be clothed just like the normal people giving them a less godly appearance and less power. Even today certain connotations exist with colors like black for evil white for good, etc... The authors include this essay to demonstrate man s first foray into chemistry by mixing and blending dyes to create more extravagant colors to sell. The lust for colorful clothes drove vendors to create more eccentric dyes, thereby forcing them to utilize experimental chemistry to create new shades and hues. The book here focuses too much on the historical aspects. I can see the relationship but it is weak and describing the chemical make up of colors doesn t explain why it relates to history. Essay twelve discusses a dark time for chemists. Suddenly, in the mid 1500 s chemists went from being priests and healers to witches and devils. Chemistry during this period is limited and men known as alchemists ran the show. These men used herbs metals and spices to create useful substances and herbal remedies. Helpful as they ... • 4. Mlab Concert Review On November 18, 2015, I attended a UAB concert involving jazz combos and a guitar ensemble. This concert was filled with amazing musicians, intricate solos, and thick harmonies. There were three jazz combos and one guitar ensemble; the first set was the guitar ensemble, which contained four guitarists and one bass player. The ensemble consisted of four songs: Swing It, a swing style song; Samba #1 ; A Child is Born, a waltz; and Bill s Bay. The main theme of Bill s Bay was very catchy and memorable, and the ensemble s most impressive player to me was Michael Galanti on the bass guitar. His solos involved precise pizzicato and quick movement that I have never witnessed in a bass player. Next, the series of jazz combos began, and a younger group of UAB students started to play. Their first song was The Preacher by Horace Silver, and this song was the only song with lyrics. The singer was nearly impossible to hear because she was singing in piano while the other group members were playing in fortissimo. Also, I was startled by how loud the brass instruments sounded in the concert hall; however, this is due to the trumpet being a haut instrument. Then, another combo began playing, and this combo was under the guidance of Carlos Pino. The group brought more energy and more skill, and this is shown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The four songs in their set were either composed or arranged by a member of the group. Throughout this entire concert, every performance had one thing in common. Every player seemed to be having fun and loved to play jazz. This was my first opportunity to go to a jazz concert, and it allowed me to hear a completely new style of music. It opened my eyes to a great genre of American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They settled there and the rich ethnic culture and religion of native Hawaiians developed in isolation, untouched by the outside world, for the next five hundred years. Each island had their own chief that ruled under the guidelines of the Kapu religion. Their mystical polytheistic views affected every aspect of life from lifestyle habits to lawmaking. But in mid January of 1778 a group of European explorers led by Captain James Cook arrived on their island home. • 8. Margaret Atwood Feminist Literature Margaret Atwood: a Social Activist Through Feminist Literature The 1980s signified the continuation of an era of social and political upheaval in the United States of America. At the forefront was a socially conservative agenda that aimed to rescind women s rights only ratified less than a decade before, a marked display of the nation s desire to uphold traditional values that defined the preceding generation (Françoise). Among the devastating political climate, however, was Margaret Atwood: a voice that refused to be silenced, a progressive storyteller who interwove her writings with feminist themes that pushed boundaries and defied the status quo (Napierkowski). Her prolific writing career is full of poems, essays, short stories, and novels that have permanently altered the perception of Canadian literature, while never ceasing to shed light on pertinent cultural and social issues. Margaret Eleanor Atwood was born on November 18, 1939 in Ottawa, Canada. As a child, she moved back and forth from Toronto and rural northern Canada, at the same time fostering a passion for writing at an early age. She would later earn bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of Toronto and Radcliffe College, respectively. In addition, Atwood has held various teaching positions at universities throughout North America ( Editors ). She is internationally recognized as one of Canada s most prolific and impactful writers, most recently winning the PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 ( Awards ). Perhaps Atwood s earliest influence can be found in her upbringing. Her exposure to both metropolitan Toronto and rural Quebec created a colorful childhood, absent of the comfortable monotony that plagues the youth of others. Her father, an entomologist and avid reader, helped cultivate in his daughter a love of nature (Biography.com). Atwood expressed how her parents challenged gender roles in a 1978 interview with The New York Times: They expected me to make use of my intelligence and abilities and did not pressure me into getting married ... remember that all this was taking place in the 1950s, when marriage was seen as the only desirable goal. • 9. The Issue Of Political Participation Political participation is a right afforded to United States citizens; it is our civic duty to participate and is ultimately a privilege. The founders believed that it was the newly founded government s responsibility to protect the basic rights of the people. With those beliefs they made the United States of America, a two tiered, three branch democracy and therefore the people hold the power to freely elect who they want to represent them in government. The local representatives, we elect push for laws of interest to the majority and provide them with the resources that they need. The president implements and enforces laws that Congress passes. With such social ramifications and power granted to government representatives it would seem as though nearly everyone should be invested in political matters and actively engaged in political participation. Among the easiest ways to get involved politically is through the voting process and elections, others are symbolic participation, civil society participation, protesting, marching, contacting public officials, being part of election campaigns and even running for office. While voting is among the easiest ways to be a part of this democracy, the turnout is low. The right to vote has opened up to a larger number of people through legislation, but still the turnout rate is low. There are factors that show a correlation in the chance of whether or not one will vote, and are very telling in some instances. Voting in the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Genre Theory Paper Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to categorize films. Genre are dependent on different factors such as who the director is, story line, and audience expectations (Azia, n.d). Genres are types or categories and genre films that are usually recognizable as part of a certain genre (Goodykoontz, B., Jacobs, 2014, section 4.1). To better understand genre there are several examples to look at. When watching a fantasy film we know that within the movie we will expect to see unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters or settings often overlapping with various other genres (GoodyKoontz, 2014). In musical films you will see that the film mainly focuses on songs. Genres also have subgenres which are sub categories of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of strictly dialogue, the narrative may from time to time be advanced by characters breaking into song. Numerous subgenres exist within the musical genre from musical comedy to musical drama to animated musicals to musical documentaries and concert films (Goodykoontz, B., Jacobs, 2014, section 4.4). A scene that helps classify Snow White and the Seven dwarfs into the animated musical genre is the scene where all the dwarfs are working hard at the jewelry mine and once work gets over they walk home in a single line singing the song heigh ho heigh ho its home from work we go as they dance and skip on their walk home from work. Another scene that illustrates a musical/fantasy genre is the scene where Snow White discovers the dwarf s cabin and with help from the animals of the forest she starts to clean the house while singing whistle while you work. I m sure we would all love if our animals could help us with chores around the house but that will most likely never happen. This is a perfect example of a movie with fantasy genre. The fantasy genre has events that occur outside the ordinary laws that operate within the universe. Magic is central to the fantasy genre and fantasy stories often involve journeys and quests like the wicked queen on a quest to kill Snow White. There are three different ways that fantasy writers set up their worlds. Some films begin and end in a fantasy world, others start in the real world and a third type of fantasy is set in the real world but elements of magic intrude upon it (Dewan, ... Fifty six percent of Americans would feel safer if more people carried concealed weapons (Ingraham). Ten years ago, only 27 percent of Americans prefered to be allowed to carry concealed weapons (Ingraham). Now that s an overwhelming difference. Sociologist William F. Ogburn argues that the industrialization and urbanization of society has stripped the family of many of the traditional functions. Due to this factor alone, the family s role has been diminished to something strictly psychological, and that is to socialize children, and to provide emotional support for family members. There are pages of the novel dedicated to demonstrate the luxury of wealth.
