Pterocarpus has ruby-red, odorless, angular granules that are partly soluble in water and completely soluble in alcohol. It contains kinotannic acid, kino-red, catechol, and gallic acid. Pterocarpus is used as an astringent to treat diarrhea, dysentery, hemorrhage, and toothache. It is also used in industries like printing, tanning, and dyeing.
