Joints are classified based on the type of tissue that binds the bones together. There are three main types of joints: fibrous joints where bones are bound by fibrous tissue, cartilaginous joints where bones are bound by cartilage, and synovial joints which have a synovial cavity containing fluid between the bones. Cartilaginous joints are further divided into primary cartilaginous joints where the cartilage ossifies, and secondary cartilaginous joints where the cartilage does not ossify. Synovial joints allow the most movement and are further classified based on their axis of movement into uniaxial, biaxial, and multiaxial joints. Examples of each type of joint are also provided
