1. Production Diary – Week 5
This week I have carried on with my research tasks. I have completed
four research tasks this week including research into the music genre,
analysis of band/artist magazine advertisements, analysis of existing
digipaks and what is a digipak. These research tasks will all be
beneficial for me when it comes to creating my actual task of creating
a music video as it provides me with beneficial information that will
help me to produce a creative piece of work.
Research into the music genre
The first piece of research I did this week was research into the music
genre. In order to complete this research, I had to choose a song and
an artist that I wanted to use for my own music video. I had a variety of
choices including:
All I want – Kodaline
Massive attack – teardrop
I wanna be yours – Arctic Monkeys
Riptide – Vance Joy
Sweater weather – the neighbourhood
Wings – birdy
It is evident that my choices all differed from each other. However, I
had to decide on one that I believed could have a good music video
to it including the lyrics of the song that I could possibly match the
narrative of the video easily to. I ended up choosing wings by Birdy
because its lyrical content makes it easy for me to think of mis-en-scene
props to use for my music video such as the use of wings that I can
easily get hold of. Also, the lyrics can enable me to produce an
appropriate narrative that consists of two best friends enjoying their
youth. The genre of this song and other songs by the artist Birdy is of an
indie pop/rock genre. I started to do research on this genre consisting
of what codes and conventions are included in typical indie pop/rock
music videos. I looked at what common settings, mis-en-scene props,
and costumes etc. are used. This will help me when it comes to
creating my own music video as I will have an idea on what to include
for my video that will help it match to its genre of music.
Analysis of band/artist magazine advertisements
This is a similar product research task that I had completed through
doing a semiotic analysis of the posters that I decided to analyse. I
looked into magazine advertisements that were advertising the artist’s
albums. I had conducted this research task in order to have an idea of
how I would want my own product to look and also what are the
typical conventions included that will allow my poster to look just as
2. effective. I carried out this semiotic research by separating the
individual conventions into separate boxes to talk about them. This
includes the colour scheme, use of masthead, the main image etc.
Analysis of existing digipaks
Similarly to my research and analysis of band/artist magazine
advertisements, I also carried out a semiotic analysis on existing
digipaks which also involved similar products to what I will be creating
as part of my ancillary task. I used digipaks from 3 of the most popular
artists in the music industry today which includes Katy Perry’s, Lana Del
Rey’s and Beyonce. I decided to analyse their digipaks because I
believed that theirs has been proven to be most effective and most
successful. This will help me with creating my own digipak as I will also
have an idea of what to include and the typical conventions that I
should include in order for it to look more professional.
