Question 1 Media Evaluation
1. Question 1: In what ways does
your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. • In media texts, genre and conventions are incredibly important as
when they are used effectively, the audience gains an immediate
perception of the text. In most cases genre is prominently important
as it can market a text effectively.
• Christine Gledhill says that “The differences between genres mean
that different audiences could be identified and catered to. This
makes it easier to standardise and stabilise production. To the mass
media, genre is part of the process of targeting different market
sectors.”
3. • I have learnt a lot about the music video genre of my chosen area,
which is the rock music genre. I have discovered that many of my
preferred texts use prominent colours such as red, black and darker
colours, as the music can often be foreboding and moody in places. I
have used this convention in my products, especially my music video,
where I have colour-graded my performance sections in red and
black. This then immediately shows my audience that the video is
from the rock genre, as many texts use the red and black theme.
However I have made my music video unique in the sense that I have
not discovered an existing text which utilises the same colour grading
as I have, yet my aesthetic communicates a clear understanding of
rock music conventions.
4. • In Goowdin’s music video theory, he states that the re-watchability
value comes from a genuine performance and an interesting
narrative. In my music video I have created an engaging and energetic
performance by making sure my actors were confident with the song
so that they could concentrate on giving their playing energy in order
to seem more genuine. This in turn creates a more confident and
watchable performance which holds a strong sense of re-watchability.
5. • In researching rock music video, I have discovered that the camera is
often used to convey emotion, status and pace of the song. I have
used camera in order to convey these, such as shooting the band
from a lower angle to convey their powerful status, and in parts of the
video, I have shot at eye level in order to le the audience feel familiar
with the artist. I have also used a GoPro camera in order to create a
unique angle in the music video, which introduces a newer frame in
my genre, as I had not seen that particular angle in any of my
research.
