How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary texts?By Stephanie Hakesley
Do WahDoo – The Song I choseThis song is Britpop/Indie-Rock in terms of genre. There are particular codes and conventions associated with these two genres. Often there is a lot of movement in the videos, bright colours, lip syncing and dancing. These codes and conventions tend to be specific to such genres, which made it easier when storyboarding and doing my planning and research. Although many of these codes and conventions are known, I also confirmed that they are of the Britpop/Indie-Rock genre through textual and semiotic analysis’.
Genre ResearchI used both semiotic and textual analysis’ in order to clearly define the typical codes and conventions of existing media texts with similar genres.I also conducted primary research; in which I asked people what they would expect to see in a video to Do WahDoo. This also helped me with my inspiration for my video.

CD Cover for Do WahDoo
How effective were these ancillary texts? Personally I think that the three key parts to my Music Video (along with the CD Cover and Advert) are all closely linked and work effectively. Because I used Naina (the singer in the video) as the front of the marketing materials I think it effective because everyone can recognise they go together.
Links between the textsObviously I have used the same person to front all three texts which I think shows a direct correlation between the three texts.I have clearly printed the song title ‘Do WahDoo’ on both marketing materials. The close up photos of Naina (main singer) on the marketing materials link to this genre particularly. Often images fronting such songs are computer generated images which link to the song, however, I used Ida Maria’s close up shot as my inspiration.
Looking back…I think there is an obvious and clear link between my three texts, research and planning materials and my mood board.I think that the texts are clear to the audience and all show part of what happens in the video, as Naina is the main part. The theme I chose was clearly defined through all parts of my production!
