Umami Brain Case
1. What are the functions of the LGN, superior colliculus, and striate cortex in vision?
Lateral geniculate nucleus function is identical to a moving position for an express way. Axons
emerging into the LGN are identified, and their information is transmitted off to primary visual cortex.
LGN is the primary relay station for information streaming from eye to brain in the human visual
system.
Superior colliculus function is to locate the sources of sensory input in space. The lateral and medial
superior olives projects to the superior colliculus. It s deep layers are laid out according to a mad of
auditory space.
Striate cortex in vision is the first area in the cerebal cortex where visual information is processed and
received. Neurons from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the taste system has evolved to detect the nutrients or toxins in foods previous to ingestion, it is
logic that fats would be sensed through taste. Additional macronutrients, namely carbohydrates and
proteins, are exposed through the tastes of sweet and umami. An increasing amount of evidence from
humans and other animal species provides support for this proposition. In support for a functional
significance of fat taste, differences in taste sensitivity for fat seems to predict certain dietary
behaviors. Furthermore, sensitivity to fat can be controlled by the diet. The intake of a high fat diet
appears to boost the body s capacity for fat absorption with no changes in hungriness. This implies
that such changes may accompany or foster excess fat intake and obesity. These facts propose a direct
role of the taste system in the consumption and liking of high fat foods. The process allowing for
increased consumption of fat is indicated to be by fullness or satiety signals. In the following 5 10
years should finally uncover if fat can be categorized as the sixth taste. In any case, there happens to
be a functional significance to oral chemosensing of

The Identity of a Puerto Rican Essay
The Identity of a Puerto Rican
Sidney W. Mintz describes the Caribbean as a scattering of some fifty inhabited units spanning nearly
2, 500 miles of sea between Mexico s Yucatan Peninsula and the north coast of South America,
constitute the oldest colonial sphere of Western European overseas expansion... these territories were
dominated and navigated and explored, their aborigines had been thrust into the consciousness of
European monarchs, philosophers, and scientists (17). The islands in the Caribbean might have some
common historical patterns of conquest, slavery and the development of multi cultural societies but
each island has its own history, culture and identity. As part of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico can identify
with some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first storey deals with the issue of the first Puerto Ricans, the mestizo culture of a predominantly
Afro Antillean type. The second storey is from the 18th to the 19th century and the second wave of
immigration, the third storey deals with the invasion of the United States in 1898 and finally, the
fourth storey deals with an advancement American capitalism, industrialization and migration. The
United States plays an important role in the issue of Puerto Rican national identity. Nancy Morris in
her book Puerto Rico: Culture, Politics and Identity, writes, The collective identity of Puerto Ricans
has been influenced by the island s relationship with the United States, but Puerto Ricans have
retained an identity that is distinct and separate from their sovereign power (1).
The Taino Indians, The African and The Spanish
The Puerto Rican culture has three historical roots; the Taino Indian, the African and the Spanish. The
Africans became the most important for economic and social reasons. As part of the Spanish conquest
most of all the Taino Indians were exterminated. Both the Tainos and Africans were trapped in the
most oppressed stratum of the social pyramid, this allowed for cultural exchange between the two
group. Due to the lack of Spanish woman, the Spanish men also became involved with both the Tainos
and Africans. Gonzalez claims that, when the descendants of the first African slaves had already
become black Puerto

Animal Dreaming and Substantiation-A Connection to Humanity
Animal sleep is presented in various patterns like hibernation, nocturnal activity, and even napping!
For example, penguins rarely sleep in case of abrupt attacks of predators. They sleep in standing
positions for only a few minutes to provide security. In some occasions, penguins take naps in the
ocean after a full meal. In contrast, brown bats spend generally nineteen hours just on sleeping
hanging upside down. As these examples demonstrate, the state of sleeping in animals is confirmed
based on scientific research. The evidence of animal sleep is obvious, mainly characterized by
temporary unconsciousness, non responsiveness to external stimuli, and passivity in movement.
Although animal sleeping is corroborated by these common symptoms, ... Show more content on

In particular, birds compensate for sleep loss with SWS (slow wave sleep), the fourth stage of sleep.
Higher blood circulation in the hippocampus was caught on the PET scan demonstrating the same
result as REM sleep. Although birds spend five percent of their sleep in REM sleep and the rest in
SWS, they seem to have very brief dreaming episodes. Finally, involuntary body movements show
unconsciousness or resemble the movements which happen in the dream.Initially, intellectual animals
exhibit body movements only at stages associated with dreaming. Body movements include
occasional spasms of the face, twitching, and muscular atony. For instance, dogs generally bark or
twitch their legs during REM sleep. Besides dogs, five zebra finches and their body movement were
monitored byPhilip Low at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences. Muscular atony is a symptom of
paradoxical REM sleep and the state in which muscles are relaxed. In the 1970s, Adrian Morrison, Ph.
D of university of Pennsylvania observed the state of atonia in dogs which occurred after REM sleep.
Furthermore, animals demonstrate movements similar to previous experiences which show that they
have collective memory. The imitation of mammals made in REM sleep can be led to the relation
between REM sleep and memory. Platypuses also make movements imitating the process where they

The Importance Of Power Diasipation In Design Circuits
In the past, density and frequency were low enough and never acted like a constraint on the chip. But
as the scale of integration improved, the number of transistors being packed onto a chip has increased.
This lead to the increase of the operating frequency and processing capacity of the chip and thus
resulting in power dissipation. As a result, power efficiency is considered as a design goal along with
performance. Despite this acceptance, low power design methodologies are adopted at a slow pace
because of the effort that must be into at the abstraction level and at each phase of the design. Initially,
circuits were designed targeting the performance of the device. The cost associated with installing
fans, packing and cooling of such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4.1.1 Switching Power This arises when the energy is drawn from the power supply to charge parasitic
capacitors Figure 4.1 Circuit for computing switching power of a CMOS gate [28] The energy stored
in the output load capacitance is given by Ecap=1/2CL.VDD2 (4.2) where CL is the load capacitance.
For the transition from 0 VDD, the capacitor stores half of the energy drawn from the power supply
and the other half is dissipated in the PMOS network. For the transition VDD 0, no charge is drawn
from the supply and the energy stored in the capacitor i.e 1/2CL.VDD2 is dissipated in the NMOS
network. 4.1.2 Short circuit Power The switching component of power is independent of the rise and
fall time of the logic gates. However, the finite rise and fall times of the input waveforms result in a
direct current path between VDD and GND for a short period of time and both PMOS and NMOS
devices are ON. Such kind of behaviour leads to incorrect evaluations. Pshort circuit= /2(V_DD
〖2V〗_t)3/T_clk (4.3) where  is the rise time of the input signal, Vt=Vtn=Vtp The short circuit
currents can be eliminated if the supply is lowered to a value below the sum of the thresholds of the
transistors. 4.1.3 Leakage Power There are two types leakage currents reverse bias diode leakage and
sub threshold leakage. The magnitude of these currents is affected by the technology. 4.1.3.1 Diode
Leakage This leakage occurs when one

Sexism In The Help
In a sexism stricken society there are drawbacks that affect women every day of their lives. According
to men, about 56% of them think sexism is no longer an issue (Source). Today, sexism is still a threat
to women of all over the world. Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, addresses sexism to make
the time period genuine to the reader. The sexism in Stockett s book is brought forth indirectly.
Stockett uses two of her main protagonists as an example on how sexism affects women and the roles
they are supposed to play. Sexism is a practice that is detrimental to women, entices violence, and
creates a social barrier between the sexes.
To begin with, women often find themselves in adverse situations that they have no control over.
Skeeter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Comparing today s society to the society in The Help, jobs were only offered to women who fit the
look of a petite, feminine woman and nowadays people are hired for the amount of experience they
had. Stockett emphasizes the gender barrier many women experience during the time period she
depicts in her book. In the beginning chapters when Miss. Skeeter is looking for a job she encounters
a, squat, single column under HELP WANTED: FEMALE (Stockett 68), in the daily paper implying
there is a limit of jobs that women can work. Most of them happened to be secretary positions. This is
not only hurtful to women who do not fit the conventional stereotype of a woman, but to women who
want to change their world even if it means baby steps. Men are always offered, at least four columns
filled with bank managers, accountants, loan officers, cotton collate operators. On this page, Percy
Gray, LP, is offering Jr. Stenographers fifty more cents an hour (Stockett 69), additionally adding to
the notion that men have more job opportunities and make more money. The way that sexism plays its
role in society make it seem like there is no way of overcoming this obstacle faced by women.
Breaking the large social boundary that women should play house while the men watch television is
happening in real life in today s time. All thing considered, women today are being more than a simple
housewife, they are

Fear In Dragonwings
It s 5:15 AM, and the streets are quiet. By 5:30, the streets are torn apart, and rubble is strewn
everywhere. What happened in those fifteen minutes was the San Fransisco earthquake. When you
look at Comprehending the Calamity by Emma Burke and Laurence Yep s Dragonwings, you can truly
imagine the extent of the damage and fear, even though Burke s purpose is to inform, while Yep s is to
entertain.
Emma Burke s point of view of the earthquake in Comprehending the Calamity was that it was
violent, and hard to understand. She states that No one can comprehend the calamity to San Francisco
in its entirety... (Burke, 1). This explains to us that the damage caused by the earthquake must have
been devastating.. She also describes the extreme force of the earthquake, saying The shock came, and
hurled my bed against an opposite wall... It grew constantly worse, the noise deafening; the crash of
dishes... the groaning and straining of the building itself (1). By describing the enormous event in
detail, we can get a sense of just how bad every building was shaking and crumbling.
Moon Shadow s point of view of the earthquake in Dragonwings by Laurence Yep was that at first he
was scared, but then he decides it isn t so bad; they re all alive and together. ... Show more content on

Emma s purpose is to inform readers about the earthquake. We have to infer some of her point of view.
It isn t always stated directly, because she is trying to give details about what was happening rather
than reveal too much about how she felt about it. Laurence Yep, however, has the purpose of engaging
the reader in a whole different world. Yep uses details that cause us to infer his point of view and he
uses actions to show us his point of view. Moon Shadow s point of view appeals to our emotions by
focusing on the people in the aftermath of the earthquake and how he felt about what he

INTRODUCTION OF SUPPORT GROUP ONLINE SUPPORT
GROUP Essay
INTRODUCTION Support groups bring together people facing similar issues, whether that s illness,
relationship problems or major life changes. Members of support groups often share experiences and
advice. It can be helpful just getting to talk with other people who are in the same boat. While not
everyone wants or needs support beyond that offered by family and friends, you may find it helpful to
turn to others outside your immediate circle. A support group can help you cope better and feel less
isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges. A support group shouldn t
replace your standard medical care, but it can be a valuable resource to help you cope (Staff, 2013).
Examples of support groups include those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Online support groups can help someone gain a sense of control or empowerment and reduce their
levels of stress, depression, or anxiety by promoting open, honest sharing of personal feelings, mutual
emotional support, comfort, virtual hugging, sharing of practical treatment information, coping
strategies, personal experiences, and success stories by way of e mails and Internet group discussion
boards (Wessel, K, 1996).
Since at least 1982, the internet has provided a new venue for support group (John Schappi, 2012).
Discussing online self help support groups as the precursor to e therapy, Martha Ainsworth notes that
the enduring success of these groups has firmly established the potential of computer mediated
communication to enable discussion of sensitive personal issues. For example Email, Usenet and
internet bulletin boards have become popular methods of communication for peer to peer self help
groups and facilitated support groups. Support groups have long offered companionship and
information for people coping with diseases or disabilities, and online situational oriented groups have
expanded to offer support for people facing various life circumstances, especially those involving
personal and cultural relationships (Van Brunt, 2008).
A convenient aspect of online support groups is the around the clock availability to its members.
People can go online to blog or chat with others anytime of the day or night. There are no time

Questions On Adjusting And The Truth

Adjusting to the Truth... I was going to be extremely late. At this point, the clock on my watch couldn

situation. So I decided to run for it, if I made it, terrific. If not at least I would be able to say I tried.
The way my mom has always taught me to keep trying no matter how many obstacles you have in
front of you, to keep trying because there s so much more satisfaction in that in the end than, just
giving up because you were scared or had let the negative lies take over you. From a far I could see

Norse Mythology And Christianity
When analyzing Norse mythology and other religions like Christianity, There is a high proof that the
ending of norse started the beginning of Christianity and therefore the two are related. Norse
mythology has been traced as far as the 2nd century AD and has been studied by the Vikings mostly.
These Viking were from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Faroe Island, and Greenland. Norse
mythology was at one point a religion of which people studied. North religion bases all its stories on
the Elder Edda, which creates stories from god s other wise known as the Aesir and gives a standard of
how the earth was made, how we should treat others, and stories of lessons we must learn. In this type
of mythology it also gives knowledge as to what happens when you die. It says there are two possible
places people could go, Helheim, Valhalla. Most people who die go to Helheim but those who die an
honorable death are rewarded by going to Valhalla. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

others and bases for how we should live our lives. All of these bases are given and as a reward of

Ethnic Groups Of South Sudan
INTRODUCTION Sudan takes on the meaning of Land of Blacks (Sudan, n.p.g ¶4) and is located in
east central Africa. South Sudan which borders with five other African nations; Central African
Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia (see figure 1). South Sudan has
an estimated population of 11.5 million people but is considered a relatively poor nation with over
90% of the Sudanese people living on less than $1 a day (Aljazeera, 2011). South Sudan has many
ethnic groups with the two main ethnic groups known as the Dinka (majority 38.5%) and the Nuer
(minority 15.6%) with approximately 40 other different ethnic groups. Moreover, due to ongoing
conflicts according to a recent report (30 May 2014) from the United Nations an estimated 1 million
Sudanese citizens are currently internally displaced and a further 360 thousand, who have fled to
neighboring states (Carto Mission, 2014 ¶2 3). South Sudan is currently a state that is considered to be
one of the most vulnerable countries in the world failing to provide basis responsibilities of a
sovereign state due in large to the erosion of legitimate authority, ethnic conflicts and power control of
the country s wealth (International Business Times Mahapatra, 2013). This report will briefly explain
the background to Sudan conflicts. This report will also identify and discuss the main causes.
Moreover, the report will also examine the conflicts to include an interdisciplinary approach of

Pros And Cons Of Texting On Writing
In the academic article Does Texting Affect Writing? Michaela Cullington weighs the pros and mostly
cons on texting hindering your formal writing. A college level paper is to be considered the first step
in writing at a scholarly level by experts. In high school we write for the recreation with genres like
short stories or poems. In college we are expected to write more for rhetorical analysis or things that
don t include your personal point of view. Texting hasn t been around and as trendy as it is now as the
average person doesn t start texting until their freshman year of high school. Texting use to be frowned
upon as a sort of childish thing but as Cullington states ...and is even becoming popular in the business
world because it allows quick messages to be sent without people having to commit to a telephone
conversation.
Early on Cullington gave us all the contrary implications of texting s effect. Things like Textspeak or
abbreviations and acronyms used in student s formal writing are some of the many negative
connotations of texting. For example teachers we finding that student were using slang like GTG
which is short for the phrase got to go peppered through writing samples. Another disagreement she
had was with the student s misuse of or lack thereof punctuation in their writing. Because texting
doesn t emphasize the importance of the correct punctuation in writing students overlook the simple
things in writing formally. She also feels, like many others, that

The Importance Of A Musician And A Fine Artist
Two careers that the Focus 2 Assessment claims would be a satisfactory fit for me include a musician
and a fine artist. For both of these occupations, I would be more than willing to deliberate about taking
up either of them in the future, taking into consideration that I am currently a performing musician. I
also have plentiful experience in the visual arts as well, so I could imagine being a fine artist as well.
Both jobs include doing things I enjoy to a great extent. A musician is an individual who typically
plays an instrument, but numerous musicians may also compose music, direct ensembles, or teach.
Demand in musician positions is expected to grow by about 5% until 2022, which is slower than the
average growth for other occupations. Musicians need continuous training to maintain skills,
knowledge, and the ability to interpret music. Much of this training can be achieved through colleges,
universities, and musical conservatories. Typically, this training culminates in a variety of bachelor
degrees, including Music Education, Music Performance, and Music Business. Participation in some
sort of musical ensemble is pertinent while studying to become a musician. Skills that are typically
required of musicians include troubleshooting, experience in the performing arts, manual dexterity,
managing time, listening, and decision making. The salary for musicians is typically around $45,000 a
year. However, this can vary between musicians due to short term contracts or working

Phaethon is the son of Clymene and she told Phaethon he is the son of the Sun god. But, she said you
will not believe me ,he went to ask his father for hisself. So Phaethon went to the radiant palace of the
sun and asked the Sun God if he was his father. He said yes everything that Clymene told you is true.
The sun god wanted to prove that he was his father so anything that the son wish he shall it. Phaethon
asked to take the place of the sun god just for one day. let me drive your chariot. This is the only thing
the Sun God had to refuse because no mortal can drive his chariot also, no other god can drive but
himself.Yet Phaethon got in the chariot anyway and die on by falling to his death while he was on fire
The Situational Archetypes is The Quest .Phaethon was looking for his father the sun god. It restore
balance back to Phaethon s life and let him know who his dad was. Also he was on quest with the
chariot because he s dad let him grant any wish Phaethon wanted. So Phaethon asked to take his dad s
place for the day ,and to his father s chariot then fell to his death.
The Character Archetypes is Father/Son Conflict. Because Phaethon wants answers from the Sun God
to see if he is Phaethon s dad. It s the father son conflict because phaethon never knew who his father
was until the moment in story when he was at the radiant palace.
The Symbolic Archetype is Light vs. Darkness .Light is hope for Phaethon

A Study Of Ecology And Its Effects On The Environment
Competition in ecosystems has become central to the study of ecology, and has been implicated as a
major factor behind the patterns of species abundance and distribution. Though often studied together,
abundance and distribution are two distinct designations, abundance being the density of a species in a
given area, and the spatial arrangement of that species in an area is referred to as the distribution
(Brown, 1984). In ecological terms competition refers to a fight between two organisms, of the same
species or different, for a limiting resource, leading often to an adverse effect on one or both organism
(Birch, 1957). When one of the organisms in the competition out competes the other for the desired
resource this results in a negative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to emphasize that exploitation and interference competition mechanisms can be
intraspecific or interspecific, thus are classified as real competition, while apparent competition is
typically only of the interspecific type (Birch, 1957). With that said, of all forms competition,
interspecific competition, the competition between two or more species, has been studied most
intensively as cause behind patterns of distribution and abundance within populations of species.
However, there has been much disagreement regarding the prominence of interspecific competition in
natural environment, and whether it actually effects the abundance and distribution of species. In this
paper the history and application of interspecific competition, along with a common model used to
illustrate it will be evaluated, through their use in various ecological researches.
History of Interspecific Competition Though the study of ecology is a relatively new science, the
earliest records of competition in biology and in the environment can be traced back to Charles
Darwin (Park, 1954). Darwin, the father evolution, placed great emphasis on the importance of
competition, specifically interspecies competition, in the process of natural selection and species

The Importance Of Doing Business In Canada
Doing business in Canada is often synonymous with North American business practices. In most cases
there is little difference in managerial style, business language and approach to agreements whether
you re standing in Calgary, Alberta or Chicago, Illinois. There is an exception to this general principle
however. Doing business in indigenous communities and with indigenous peoples in Canada is almost
unrecognizable from models used across North America. Indigenous culture is different, the values are
different, and the measure of time is different. This paper will briefly highlight some of the intricacies
of managing business relationships in Canada s indigenous communities.

Nations recognized by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are no cold, unemotional deals in these communities; as such, trust and communication become
key elements to managing business relationships in Indian Country . (Edworthy, 2014) Many of the
trust issues have nothing to do with the partners at the table, but are latent cultural issues as a result of
intrusive legislation and regulation. (Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, 2014) Communication
with indigenous peoples can present unique challenges as well. As English and business English are
not the first languages used by indigenous peoples, long pauses and quiet tones are often used when
Western culture would dictate otherwise. Prolonged eye contact, a sign of genuineness in western
culture, can be enough to cause mistrust and discomfort among indigenous peoples so strongly that it
could jeopardize nearly completed business arrangements and agreements. (Joseph, 2015) It is critical
that research into the individual communities and their customs be conducted by the proponents prior
to making contact. This extra time can avoid costly and time consuming

Gene Based Evolutionary Theories
This week we learned about and studied gene based evolutionary theories that are associated with
criminal and antisocial behavior. Among the theories was the r/K theory. The r/K theory is used in
evolutionary biology and argues that organisms follow a continuum when reproducing (Smith, 2016,
p. 17). This theory consists of r and K selection which are basically opposite of one another. When
environmental opportunities allow, organisms near the r end reproduce rapidly and productively.
However when doing so, not much time is invested in their offspring (Cullen, Agnew, Wilcox, 2014,
p. 71). All of the following are components of r selection: mating is emphasized, several children are
reproduced, early reproduction occurs, and rapid and productive

Quit Day 5 Steps To Quit Smoking
Tanner Brooks
Mrs. Galbraith
English 101
9/15/2016
Last month Jon saw a commercial on T.V. about the harmful effects smoking has on the body. The
commercial showed how smoking can lead from things as minor as bad breath and yellow teeth to
something as severe as lung cancer. Jon, a frequent smoker, decided he would put down his cigarettes
for good. Jon threw his last pack of cigarettes in the garbage that day. Today though, Jon is still
smoking. He only went two days without smoking and began to experience great withdrawals. Jon
thought he had to buy another pack just to feel better. Jon saw the commercial again today and decided
that he could not do this alone; he needed help. Jon called the number on the commercial and began to
speak to a specialist who gave him great advice on how to quit his habit for good. The specialist told
Jon that there were five steps he needed to follow in order to start his journey to quit smoking. Set a
quit date, stay busy, avoid smoking triggers, stay positive, and ask for help from others ( Quit Day:5
Steps ) The first step in the process to smoking is to set a quit date. Setting a quit date requires ...

Quitting smoking is a very hard habit to break, and a good attitude is imperative to one s success. In
order for one to succeed in quitting smoking they must take each day one day at a time and not think
of quitting as forever. By living in the moment and paying attention to today the time will add up and
in turn will help one stay more positive. Another way to stay positive is to reward one selves for
quitting. According to Text from Medline Plus s article How to stop smoking: Dealing with cravings
one should: Plan rewards for each stage of quitting you get through. The longer you go without
smoking, the bigger the reward. A suggestion is for one to reward their self for every week they are

Plasmid Vs Ampicillin
After analyzing the data recorded for both the agar plates containing ampicillin and those that did not,
it can be concluded that the data provides enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. There is
enough evidence to support the alternative hypothesis stating that there is a correlation between
plasmids coding for an antibiotic resistant gene and bacterial growth in ampicillin. When a bacterial
solution containing either pUC18 or the lux plasmid is transformed in an agar plate containing
ampicillin, only those cells which took in the plasmid are able to survive and replicate, forming
individual colonies. Not all cells are transformed though, the chances of a successful transformation
were extremely low. In order to see which cell transformed the cells were tagged according to their
plasmid, in the plates containing pUC18 the only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As expected the higher growth was seen in the E.coli cells growing outside ampicillin environments,
this is because they grow freely with only minor risk, such as contamination. Possible errors in the
experiment can have included the difference in the amount of liquid broth added to the E.coli sample
that contained no plasmid and that which contained a plasmid. The sample containing no plasmid
received half the amount of liquid broth (150µl) as that of the other two samples (300µl). Liquid broth
can have incremented the growth in the plates containing plasmid twice as much as on the rest of the
plates. Another artifact which can have affected the results was the time each solution spent in both the
ice and hot water bath. Uneven sharing may have also taken place within the E.coli used for each
plasmid leading to different amounts of colonial growth in the different agar plates used. More
accurate results would have been possible if there had been more variation in both E.coli and plasmid

Lord Of The Flies
Day One We are stranded on an island, or at least I am pretty sure it is an island. Ralph was the first
person I found after awakening on the beach. We found a conch shell and used it to summon all the
other boys from the plane. The boys and I voted for Ralph to be our chief. We chose Jack Merridew
and his choir to be the hunters. I am very upset with Ralph, he told all the boys that my name was
Piggy, even after I told him not to. I am sure I ll forgive him soon because for my whole life I have
been the subject of jokes, and I have learned to live with it. I already do not like Jack Merridew, and I
know he does not like me. I am glad Ralph is chief and not Jack. Ralph, Simon, and Jack went to

The fire grew out of control, and the kid with a scar on his face disappeared. He was just an innocent
kid who was anxious about some beastie. Incidents like that make me worry about getting off this
island. Ralph reassured us there is no islands undiscovered, and that it is just a matter of waiting to be
found. I am just not so sure about that. How can a person know and keep track of all the islands in the
world? Our chance of being saved is slim. If we do not have a signal fire and rules, I believe we do not
stand a chance in getting rescued. On a more positive note, I was finally useful today. The boys used
my specs to start the fire on the mountain. Although I could not help collect wood because of my
asthma, I at least was the one who enabled the fire to happen. Piggy Day Ten Jack and his hunters lost
our chance of being saved today. I have never felt this irritated before. I could be on my way home
right now but no, Jack and his hunters could not keep the fire going. They could not handle one simple
task. They were so caught up in the adrenaline of hunting a pig that nobody cared about returning
home. Jack s priorities need to be straightened out, but I do not want to be the one who does it. Jack
hates me and finds every opportunity to show it. I am so grateful for Simon. He gave me a piece of his
meat after Jack punched me in the stomach and broke my specs. Simon, unlike most of the boys on

Citizen Journalism Essay
Citizen journalism is defined as any news content, such as articles, videos etc. created by amateurs.
Traditional and citizen journalism are often contrasted to each other, however it is important to note
the similarities alongside the differences. Because of the growing popularity of citizen journalism due
to new technologies such as social media websites, it is essential to weigh the risks and opportunities
to truly see how citizen journalism is affecting the world. It is vital to assess citizen journalism and its
benefits of collaboration and pluralising voices, alongside the risks of inauthenticity, bias and causing
an erosion in the quality of news, in order to fully understand its impacts.
The pluralisation of voices that citizen journalism offers is considered one of the many benefits.
According to Melissa Wall (2015) this allows for new and important opinions and perspectives on
multiple events. For example, in rural India poor internet rates and a language barrier made it nearly
impossible for the majority of citizens to listen to the professional media. In order to expose more
citizens in India to local events, Shubhranshu Choudhary founded CGNet, which developed into a
mobile phone service, allowing for everyday citizens to report in on and listen to local events in their
native language. This leads to more, albeit unprofessional, perspectives on events from residents
(Chadha Steiner, 2015). The internet has been credited with having altered relationships with

Examples Of Good Intentions In Romeo And Juliet
Good Intentions With Bad Outcomes Besides the more obvious messages that Shakespeare supports
throughout Romeo and Juliet, there is a less obvious that you can follow throughout the whole story.
Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied, And vice sometime s by actions dignified. (Romeo and
Juliet 2.3:21 22). The ongoing message of good intentions with bad outcomes can be seen with almost
every character, not just Juliet and Romeo. One of the characters it embodies the most though is Lady
Capulet. You can see her good intentions for Juliet and how much she cares for her many times in the
story. That he shall soon keep Tybalt company; And then I hope thou wilt be satisfied (Romeo and
Juliet 3.5:91 92). When she sees her daughter crying she assumes it s over her deceased cousin and
tells her she ll kill who killed him. She has good intentions in saying this with the hopes of bringing up
her daughter s spirit. If she did follow through with that plan it would ve upset Juliet though. Even
though she would ve been trying to help it would ve ended poorly. ... Show more content on

Power of Women in William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet...
Female sovereignty was uncommon in Renaissance England. The social structure of the family
assured the subjugation of woman under man. Daughters remained under the care of their fathers until
they were married, at which time they became subject to their husband s authority. Economics ensured
the wife s dependence on her husband. Unmarried and widowed women retained far more legal rights
than married women, therefore, for a woman, marriage meant the loss of her legal and economic
rights, and therefore a dependence on the (chosen) man (Motte 29). Even though marriage often meant
a loss of legal rights, those daughters who had the good fortune to choose their mates faired better than
those whose marriages were arranged. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The standard upheld had been the normal marriage practice among the elite during the Renaissance.
The act required that banns had to be published two weeks before the ceremony was to take place;
second, that the marriage had to be solemnized in a parish church in the presence of a priest and two
other witnesses; and third, that parental consent was necessary for persons under 21 (Cacicedo 193).
This practice ensured parental control over the couple and transfer of property.
Under this strict system, Renaissance marriage became a system of fair market exchange (Matchinske
156). The husband was expected to provide economically for his wife. In turn, the wife was obligated
to render herself, her chastity, her silence, and her obedience unto her husband. Because of this system
of exchange, marriages of interest became the target of severe censure at the beginning of the century
as a form of legalized prostitution (Massai 71). Fathers exchanged their daughter s virginity for family
connections, sons promised security in order to win a wife, and women were transferred from one lord
to another.
Shakespeare s Juliet completely breaks with convention and culture by assuming female sovereignty.
A daughter in Juliet s social class should marry a man of her father s choosing. Juliet refuses to marry
Paris, forcing Capulet to give her an ultimatum:

The Transferrin Bioinorganic System Using Concepts Such As...
Objective
The purpose of the experiment is to understand the transferrin bioinorganic system using concepts
such as chelation, complexation, and Hard Soft Acid Base Theory. Specifically, the unloading of
iron(III) from bovine transferrin was done by the iron chelator, Deferiprone, and was illustrated by UV
Vis spectroscopy.
Introduction
Iron is an essential element for almost all living organisms because of its role in several metabolic
process including electron transport, oxygen transport, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis.1
However, iron needs to be tightly regulated because it can form free radicals and lead to tissue
damage. Non protein bound iron causes the release of a hydroxyl radical by superoxide and hydrogen

This experiment aims to monitor iron loading into transferrin and study the kinetics of iron removal by
Deferiprone using UV Vis spectroscopy.
Experimental Procedure
Materials and instrumentation
All of the materials were obtained from the Indiana University laboratory preparatory room and were
used without further purification. The UV Vis spectra were obtained from the VERNIER UV Vis
Spectrometer and were recorded from 350 nm to 800 nm for the complexes. Tris buffer was used as
the reference solution for all the spectra.
Preparation of the Fe(NTA)2 solution
FeCl3H2O (45 mol) and nitrilotiracetic acid (90 mol) was dissolved in hydrochloric acid (2 mL, 1 M).
The pH of the solution was adjusted to 3.5 with sodium hydroxide (18 drops, 1 M) and was diluted to
10 mL. No precipitate was observed when adjusting the pH.
Iron loading of transferrin
Bovine apotransferrin (21 mg) was dissolved in Tris buffer (3 mL) and 0.2 mL of this solution was
diluted by a factor of 10. The diluted solution was used to obtain a UV Vis spectrum. Fe(NTA)2
solution (0.4 equivalents of iron per transferrin protein) was added to 2700 L of the undiluted
apotransferrin solution. After five minutes, a UV Vis spectrum was obtained. This process of iron
addition and acquisition was repeated every five minutes until no further changes in the UV Vis
spectra were observed. Unbound iron

The restaurant industry is highly competitive, and that competition could lower their revenues,
margins and market share. The business is subject to macroeconomic and other factors that may
negatively impact the results of operations. Restaurant development plans under development
agreements may not be implemented effectively. IHOP Corp. may have difficulty expanding in new
markets outside the United States. Risks factors can also be related to franchises and the acquisition of
Applebee s. Concentration of Applebee s franchised restaurants in a limited number of franchisees
subjects IHOP to greater credit risk. Franchisees generally are not limited purpose entities , making
them subject to business, credit, financial and other risks. IHOP Corp. business strategy may not
achieve the anticipated results for Applebee s. The significant costs that they incur in connection with
the acquisition may not be offset by cost savings in the future. IHOP may fail to realize the anticipated
benefits of the acquisition as a result of risks associated with integrating the business of Applebee s
with their existing business. IHOP may be unable to generate sufficient cash flow to satisfy their
significant debt service obligations, which would adversely affect their financial condition and results
of operations. IHOP believes the Applebee s

Essay Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep
Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep
I sat at my desk, wondering what I could possibly write about The Big Sleep. I mean, there are so
many possibilities. This guy, Raymond Chandler s writing style is so different from anything I have
ever read before, that there are many things that I could talk about. I heard that Chandler once said, I
live for syntax! It does not surprise me that he would say something along those lines. I mean, this
writer is all over the page with different writing techniques. Whether it is his use of similes or the lack
of punctuation, Chandler s novel is easy to read, process and enjoy.
I wouldn t say that this book requires an in depth reading to understand the ... Show more content on

In places that he could use a dash, the reader will see a comma. This is a strange style because it
makes the reader think that he did not know how to use the other kinds of punctuation so he just stuck
to the comma. I think that Chandler was a bit comma happy because every paragraph, consisting of
about six sentences on average, probably has six or seven commas at least that s a lot for one small
paragraph!
Small paragraphs are also a characteristic of Chandler s style. Not including the conversational
paragraphs, I would say that Chandler s average paragraph was six sentences. The sentences say what
they say; they are not long winded, layered sentences, but quick and to the point sentences. The words
in the sentences are not by any means elaborate either. It might take longer to find a word with more
than two syllables than a colon! This technique is very effective to let the reader follow the plot easier;
the words are not ones that an average intellectual person would stumble over.
Possibly the most famous of Chandler s techniques is his use of similes. The man must eat, sleep and
breathe similes because they are everywhere! If the reader were to open the book to any page, most
likely there will be a simile on it. For instance, randomly opening my copy of The Big Sleep, I turn to
page 81 and find this: People who spend their money for second hand sex jags are as nervous as
dowagers who can t find the restroom (81).

Essay on Risk Taking
In our lives, it is important to exercise self command. However,
we should not be so concerned with the future that we stifle the present.
The question becomes what balance should we strike between self command
and risks? What kinds of risks are acceptable or unacceptable? In this
essay, we will use two examples of risks to show the distinction between
the two and arrive at a conclusion as to the balance one should have
between risk and self command. The first example we will use is of a
person who spends his life savings on a lottery ticket and does not win
the lottery. The second is of a person who spends his life savings on a
hunch regarding a cure for AIDS, a hunch that is false. Before we make ... Show more content on

Now that we have several definitions of acceptable risks, we may
ask how these definitions, which seem piecemeal and unrelated, can all
combine to form one definition of acceptable risk. The best way to do
this is to examine the two cases that lie before us and relate the
definitions to them. In the process of doing so, we will determine which
risk is acceptable and which is not.
Risks in the example: the lottery and the AIDS cure
If the average person on the street were presented with the case
of spending one s life savings on a lottery ticket and losing or spending
the same sum on a false hunch regarding an AIDS cure, he or she would
probably come up with several answers. For the most part though, all the
answers would be consistent with one idea: the AIDS cure is simply
quot;worth quot; more and thus is a more acceptable risk. There might be several
reasons for this. One could assume, for example, that the only person who
would attempt to cure AIDS would be a doctor with sufficient experience in
the field. It would follow, then, that the odds of finding a cure for
AIDS would be much greater than the odds of winning the lottery. To win
the lottery, one has to draw 6 numbers out of 46 (a probability that is
very low). However, curing AIDS with medical experience is a less risky
endeavor. In this instance, trying to cure AIDS would be a greater moral
good because it is

The Reality Of Romantic Love
The lives of numerous people within large societies, including Scandinavians, are culturally
constructed. These cultural norms are passed down through countless generations, nevertheless
Scandinavian countries are especially influenced through arts and literature. The norms people learn
are always taken as a grain of salt, often accepting them as inevitable and natural without question.
Though, in analyzing and challenging these cultural constructs, one is quick to realize that a few of the
viewpoints are just meager conventions of their particular culture. The realization of this can show
anyone that other views can be more realistic in function. For example, a Scandinavian cultural norm
that should be reviewed is the idea of marriage being based on romantic love. When investigated, this
notion in our society is discovered as a deceptive explanation of reality. Even though Scandinavians
have very few doubts about romantic love being real, numerous societies throughout the world see this
idea as strange, particularly when marriage is involved. A marriage based off of romantic love is
exclusive to the industrial west, whereas other cultures marry for social and economic reasons love
may or may not follow suit. One of the popular ideas about love and marriage is that they are
synonyms, which arise from the same motifs, and cover similar human necessities. Like many
common beliefs this idea also rests not on real facts, but in superstition. Love and marriage have little

  • 2. Umami Brain Case 1. What are the functions of the LGN, superior colliculus, and striate cortex in vision? Lateral geniculate nucleus function is identical to a moving position for an express way. Axons emerging into the LGN are identified, and their information is transmitted off to primary visual cortex. LGN is the primary relay station for information streaming from eye to brain in the human visual system. Superior colliculus function is to locate the sources of sensory input in space. The lateral and medial superior olives projects to the superior colliculus. It s deep layers are laid out according to a mad of auditory space. Striate cortex in vision is the first area in the cerebal cortex where visual information is processed and received. Neurons from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the taste system has evolved to detect the nutrients or toxins in foods previous to ingestion, it is logic that fats would be sensed through taste. Additional macronutrients, namely carbohydrates and proteins, are exposed through the tastes of sweet and umami. An increasing amount of evidence from humans and other animal species provides support for this proposition. In support for a functional significance of fat taste, differences in taste sensitivity for fat seems to predict certain dietary behaviors. Furthermore, sensitivity to fat can be controlled by the diet. The intake of a high fat diet appears to boost the body s capacity for fat absorption with no changes in hungriness. This implies that such changes may accompany or foster excess fat intake and obesity. These facts propose a direct role of the taste system in the consumption and liking of high fat foods. The process allowing for increased consumption of fat is indicated to be by fullness or satiety signals. In the following 5 10 years should finally uncover if fat can be categorized as the sixth taste. In any case, there happens to be a functional significance to oral chemosensing of ... • 3. The Identity of a Puerto Rican Essay The Identity of a Puerto Rican Sidney W. Mintz describes the Caribbean as a scattering of some fifty inhabited units spanning nearly 2, 500 miles of sea between Mexico s Yucatan Peninsula and the north coast of South America, constitute the oldest colonial sphere of Western European overseas expansion... these territories were dominated and navigated and explored, their aborigines had been thrust into the consciousness of European monarchs, philosophers, and scientists (17). The islands in the Caribbean might have some common historical patterns of conquest, slavery and the development of multi cultural societies but each island has its own history, culture and identity. The United States plays an important role in the issue of Puerto Rican national identity. Nancy Morris in her book Puerto Rico: Culture, Politics and Identity, writes, The collective identity of Puerto Ricans has been influenced by the island s relationship with the United States, but Puerto Ricans have retained an identity that is distinct and separate from their sovereign power (1). The Taino Indians, The African and The Spanish The Puerto Rican culture has three historical roots; the Taino Indian, the African and the Spanish. The Africans became the most important for economic and social reasons. As part of the Spanish conquest most of all the Taino Indians were exterminated. Both the Tainos and Africans were trapped in the most oppressed stratum of the social pyramid, this allowed for cultural exchange between the two group. Due to the lack of Spanish woman, the Spanish men also became involved with both the Tainos and Africans. • 6. Animal Dreaming and Substantiation-A Connection to Humanity Animal sleep is presented in various patterns like hibernation, nocturnal activity, and even napping! For example, penguins rarely sleep in case of abrupt attacks of predators. They sleep in standing positions for only a few minutes to provide security. In some occasions, penguins take naps in the ocean after a full meal. In contrast, brown bats spend generally nineteen hours just on sleeping hanging upside down. As these examples demonstrate, the state of sleeping in animals is confirmed based on scientific research. The evidence of animal sleep is obvious, mainly characterized by temporary unconsciousness, non responsiveness to external stimuli, and passivity in movement. Although animal sleeping is corroborated by these common symptoms, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In particular, birds compensate for sleep loss with SWS (slow wave sleep), the fourth stage of sleep. Higher blood circulation in the hippocampus was caught on the PET scan demonstrating the same result as REM sleep. Although birds spend five percent of their sleep in REM sleep and the rest in SWS, they seem to have very brief dreaming episodes. Finally, involuntary body movements show unconsciousness or resemble the movements which happen in the dream.Initially, intellectual animals exhibit body movements only at stages associated with dreaming. Body movements include occasional spasms of the face, twitching, and muscular atony. For instance, dogs generally bark or twitch their legs during REM sleep. Besides dogs, five zebra finches and their body movement were monitored byPhilip Low at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences. Muscular atony is a symptom of paradoxical REM sleep and the state in which muscles are relaxed. In the 1970s, Adrian Morrison, Ph. D of university of Pennsylvania observed the state of atonia in dogs which occurred after REM sleep. Furthermore, animals demonstrate movements similar to previous experiences which show that they have collective memory. The imitation of mammals made in REM sleep can be led to the relation between REM sleep and memory. Platypuses also make movements imitating the process where they kill ... • 7. The Importance Of Power Diasipation In Design Circuits In the past, density and frequency were low enough and never acted like a constraint on the chip. But as the scale of integration improved, the number of transistors being packed onto a chip has increased. This lead to the increase of the operating frequency and processing capacity of the chip and thus resulting in power dissipation. As a result, power efficiency is considered as a design goal along with performance. Despite this acceptance, low power design methodologies are adopted at a slow pace because of the effort that must be into at the abstraction level and at each phase of the design. Initially, circuits were designed targeting the performance of the device. The cost associated with installing fans, packing and cooling of such ... For the transition from 0 VDD, the capacitor stores half of the energy drawn from the power supply and the other half is dissipated in the PMOS network. For the transition VDD 0, no charge is drawn from the supply and the energy stored in the capacitor i.e 1/2CL.VDD2 is dissipated in the NMOS network. 4.1.2 Short circuit Power The switching component of power is independent of the rise and fall time of the logic gates. However, the finite rise and fall times of the input waveforms result in a direct current path between VDD and GND for a short period of time and both PMOS and NMOS devices are ON. Such kind of behaviour leads to incorrect evaluations. The magnitude of these currents is affected by the technology. 4.1.3.1 Diode Leakage This leakage occurs when one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Sexism In The Help In a sexism stricken society there are drawbacks that affect women every day of their lives. According to men, about 56% of them think sexism is no longer an issue (Source). Today, sexism is still a threat to women of all over the world. Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, addresses sexism to make the time period genuine to the reader. The sexism in Stockett s book is brought forth indirectly. Stockett uses two of her main protagonists as an example on how sexism affects women and the roles they are supposed to play. Sexism is a practice that is detrimental to women, entices violence, and creates a social barrier between the sexes. To begin with, women often find themselves in adverse situations that they have no control over. Skeeter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Comparing today s society to the society in The Help, jobs were only offered to women who fit the look of a petite, feminine woman and nowadays people are hired for the amount of experience they had. Stockett emphasizes the gender barrier many women experience during the time period she depicts in her book. In the beginning chapters when Miss. Skeeter is looking for a job she encounters a, squat, single column under HELP WANTED: FEMALE (Stockett 68), in the daily paper implying there is a limit of jobs that women can work. Most of them happened to be secretary positions. This is not only hurtful to women who do not fit the conventional stereotype of a woman, but to women who want to change their world even if it means baby steps. Men are always offered, at least four columns filled with bank managers, accountants, loan officers, cotton collate operators. On this page, Percy Gray, LP, is offering Jr. Stenographers fifty more cents an hour (Stockett 69), additionally adding to the notion that men have more job opportunities and make more money. The way that sexism plays its role in society make it seem like there is no way of overcoming this obstacle faced by women. Breaking the large social boundary that women should play house while the men watch television is happening in real life in today s time. • 9. Fear In Dragonwings It s 5:15 AM, and the streets are quiet. By 5:30, the streets are torn apart, and rubble is strewn everywhere. What happened in those fifteen minutes was the San Fransisco earthquake. When you look at Comprehending the Calamity by Emma Burke and Laurence Yep s Dragonwings, you can truly imagine the extent of the damage and fear, even though Burke s purpose is to inform, while Yep s is to entertain. Emma Burke s point of view of the earthquake in Comprehending the Calamity was that it was violent, and hard to understand. She states that No one can comprehend the calamity to San Francisco in its entirety... (Burke, 1). This explains to us that the damage caused by the earthquake must have been devastating.. She also describes the extreme force of the earthquake, saying The shock came, and hurled my bed against an opposite wall... INTRODUCTION OF SUPPORT GROUP ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP Essay INTRODUCTION Support groups bring together people facing similar issues, whether that s illness, relationship problems or major life changes. Members of support groups often share experiences and advice. It can be helpful just getting to talk with other people who are in the same boat. While not everyone wants or needs support beyond that offered by family and friends, you may find it helpful to turn to others outside your immediate circle. A support group can help you cope better and feel less isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges. A support group shouldn t replace your standard medical care, but it can be a valuable resource to help you cope (Staff, 2013). Examples of support groups include those who ... Online support groups can help someone gain a sense of control or empowerment and reduce their levels of stress, depression, or anxiety by promoting open, honest sharing of personal feelings, mutual emotional support, comfort, virtual hugging, sharing of practical treatment information, coping strategies, personal experiences, and success stories by way of e mails and Internet group discussion boards (Wessel, K, 1996). Since at least 1982, the internet has provided a new venue for support group (John Schappi, 2012). Discussing online self help support groups as the precursor to e therapy, Martha Ainsworth notes that the enduring success of these groups has firmly established the potential of computer mediated communication to enable discussion of sensitive personal issues. For example Email, Usenet and internet bulletin boards have become popular methods of communication for peer to peer self help groups and facilitated support groups. Support groups have long offered companionship and information for people coping with diseases or disabilities, and online situational oriented groups have expanded to offer support for people facing various life circumstances, especially those involving personal and cultural relationships (Van Brunt, 2008). For both of these occupations, I would be more than willing to deliberate about taking up either of them in the future, taking into consideration that I am currently a performing musician. I also have plentiful experience in the visual arts as well, so I could imagine being a fine artist as well. Both jobs include doing things I enjoy to a great extent. A musician is an individual who typically plays an instrument, but numerous musicians may also compose music, direct ensembles, or teach. Demand in musician positions is expected to grow by about 5% until 2022, which is slower than the average growth for other occupations. Musicians need continuous training to maintain skills, knowledge, and the ability to interpret music. Much of this training can be achieved through colleges, universities, and musical conservatories. Typically, this training culminates in a variety of bachelor degrees, including Music Education, Music Performance, and Music Business. Participation in some sort of musical ensemble is pertinent while studying to become a musician. A Study Of Ecology And Its Effects On The Environment Competition in ecosystems has become central to the study of ecology, and has been implicated as a major factor behind the patterns of species abundance and distribution. Though often studied together, abundance and distribution are two distinct designations, abundance being the density of a species in a given area, and the spatial arrangement of that species in an area is referred to as the distribution (Brown, 1984). In ecological terms competition refers to a fight between two organisms, of the same species or different, for a limiting resource, leading often to an adverse effect on one or both organism (Birch, 1957). It is important to emphasize that exploitation and interference competition mechanisms can be intraspecific or interspecific, thus are classified as real competition, while apparent competition is typically only of the interspecific type (Birch, 1957). With that said, of all forms competition, interspecific competition, the competition between two or more species, has been studied most intensively as cause behind patterns of distribution and abundance within populations of species. However, there has been much disagreement regarding the prominence of interspecific competition in natural environment, and whether it actually effects the abundance and distribution of species. In this paper the history and application of interspecific competition, along with a common model used to illustrate it will be evaluated, through their use in various ecological researches. History of Interspecific Competition Though the study of ecology is a relatively new science, the earliest records of competition in biology and in the environment can be traced back to Charles Darwin (Park, 1954). Among the theories was the r/K theory. The r/K theory is used in evolutionary biology and argues that organisms follow a continuum when reproducing (Smith, 2016, p. 17). This theory consists of r and K selection which are basically opposite of one another. When environmental opportunities allow, organisms near the r end reproduce rapidly and productively. However when doing so, not much time is invested in their offspring (Cullen, Agnew, Wilcox, 2014, p. 71). There is enough evidence to support the alternative hypothesis stating that there is a correlation between plasmids coding for an antibiotic resistant gene and bacterial growth in ampicillin. When a bacterial solution containing either pUC18 or the lux plasmid is transformed in an agar plate containing ampicillin, only those cells which took in the plasmid are able to survive and replicate, forming individual colonies. Traditional and citizen journalism are often contrasted to each other, however it is important to note the similarities alongside the differences. Because of the growing popularity of citizen journalism due to new technologies such as social media websites, it is essential to weigh the risks and opportunities to truly see how citizen journalism is affecting the world. It is vital to assess citizen journalism and its benefits of collaboration and pluralising voices, alongside the risks of inauthenticity, bias and causing an erosion in the quality of news, in order to fully understand its impacts. The pluralisation of voices that citizen journalism offers is considered one of the many benefits. • 29. Power of Women in William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet... Female sovereignty was uncommon in Renaissance England. The social structure of the family assured the subjugation of woman under man. Daughters remained under the care of their fathers until they were married, at which time they became subject to their husband s authority. Economics ensured the wife s dependence on her husband. Unmarried and widowed women retained far more legal rights than married women, therefore, for a woman, marriage meant the loss of her legal and economic rights, and therefore a dependence on the (chosen) man (Motte 29). Even though marriage often meant a loss of legal rights, those daughters who had the good fortune to choose their mates faired better than those whose marriages were arranged. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The standard upheld had been the normal marriage practice among the elite during the Renaissance. The act required that banns had to be published two weeks before the ceremony was to take place; second, that the marriage had to be solemnized in a parish church in the presence of a priest and two other witnesses; and third, that parental consent was necessary for persons under 21 (Cacicedo 193). This practice ensured parental control over the couple and transfer of property. Under this strict system, Renaissance marriage became a system of fair market exchange (Matchinske 156). The husband was expected to provide economically for his wife. In turn, the wife was obligated to render herself, her chastity, her silence, and her obedience unto her husband. Because of this system of exchange, marriages of interest became the target of severe censure at the beginning of the century as a form of legalized prostitution (Massai 71). Fathers exchanged their daughter s virginity for family connections, sons promised security in order to win a wife, and women were transferred from one lord to another. • 30. Descriptive Essay About A Friend s Wedding The decorated rustic barn was illuminated with happiness in laughter. I sit down by my family in the bench and wait. She walks down the aisle in the prettiest dress i ve ever seen. He stands at the end with the happiest grin on his face. Hurry up, dad! I say as he is loading the trunk. After a few seconds, he shuts the trunk. He then gets in the car and buckles up. Today my sister, dad, and I are headed to my cousin, Jeremy s wedding. He lives in Des Moines. The car ride is 3 hours long, so we need something to do. Melissa, my sister, and I watched movies and brought coloring books. We start to watch a movie, but we fall asleep instead. Our dad wakes us up and we see a gigantic building in front of us. It is the hotel we are staying at, the Marriott. My dad pulls up to the valet and we get out our bags. The automatic doors then slide open for us to enter. We enter in awe, the lobby is lit up with dozens of tvs and sitting areas. My dad goes to the checkout counter and checks us in. Then we head up to our room. We enter our room and totally crashed of tiredness. When we finally woke from our nap, my dad thought it would be a good idea to go to the Jordan Creek mall and get us a dress. We piled in the car again, to find us a dress for the wedding. Excitedly, we entered the mall. Melissa and I s favorites store as a little girl was Justice. Every girl between the ages of four and ten loved that store. When we entered our faces lit up and we bounced around the store grabbing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Transferrin Bioinorganic System Using Concepts Such As... Objective The purpose of the experiment is to understand the transferrin bioinorganic system using concepts such as chelation, complexation, and Hard Soft Acid Base Theory. Specifically, the unloading of iron(III) from bovine transferrin was done by the iron chelator, Deferiprone, and was illustrated by UV Vis spectroscopy. Introduction Iron is an essential element for almost all living organisms because of its role in several metabolic process including electron transport, oxygen transport, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis.1 However, iron needs to be tightly regulated because it can form free radicals and lead to tissue damage. Non protein bound iron causes the release of a hydroxyl radical by superoxide and hydrogen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This experiment aims to monitor iron loading into transferrin and study the kinetics of iron removal by Deferiprone using UV Vis spectroscopy. Experimental Procedure Materials and instrumentation All of the materials were obtained from the Indiana University laboratory preparatory room and were used without further purification. The UV Vis spectra were obtained from the VERNIER UV Vis Spectrometer and were recorded from 350 nm to 800 nm for the complexes. Tris buffer was used as the reference solution for all the spectra. Preparation of the Fe(NTA)2 solution FeCl3H2O (45 mol) and nitrilotiracetic acid (90 mol) was dissolved in hydrochloric acid (2 mL, 1 M). The pH of the solution was adjusted to 3.5 with sodium hydroxide (18 drops, 1 M) and was diluted to 10 mL. No precipitate was observed when adjusting the pH. Iron loading of transferrin Bovine apotransferrin (21 mg) was dissolved in Tris buffer (3 mL) and 0.2 mL of this solution was diluted by a factor of 10. The diluted solution was used to obtain a UV Vis spectrum. Fe(NTA)2 solution (0.4 equivalents of iron per transferrin protein) was added to 2700 L of the undiluted apotransferrin solution. After five minutes, a UV Vis spectrum was obtained. This process of iron addition and acquisition was repeated every five minutes until no further changes in the UV Vis spectra were observed. The restaurant industry is highly competitive, and that competition could lower their revenues, margins and market share. The business is subject to macroeconomic and other factors that may negatively impact the results of operations. Restaurant development plans under development agreements may not be implemented effectively. IHOP Corp. may have difficulty expanding in new markets outside the United States. Risks factors can also be related to franchises and the acquisition of Applebee s. Concentration of Applebee s franchised restaurants in a limited number of franchisees subjects IHOP to greater credit risk. Franchisees generally are not limited purpose entities , making them subject to business, credit, financial and other risks. IHOP Corp. business strategy may not achieve the anticipated results for Applebee s. The significant costs that they incur in connection with the acquisition may not be offset by cost savings in the future. IHOP may fail to realize the anticipated benefits of the acquisition as a result of risks associated with integrating the business of Applebee s with their existing business. • 34. Essay Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep I sat at my desk, wondering what I could possibly write about The Big Sleep. I mean, there are so many possibilities. This guy, Raymond Chandler s writing style is so different from anything I have ever read before, that there are many things that I could talk about. I heard that Chandler once said, I live for syntax! It does not surprise me that he would say something along those lines. I mean, this writer is all over the page with different writing techniques. Whether it is his use of similes or the lack of punctuation, Chandler s novel is easy to read, process and enjoy. I wouldn t say that this book requires an in depth reading to understand the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In places that he could use a dash, the reader will see a comma. This is a strange style because it makes the reader think that he did not know how to use the other kinds of punctuation so he just stuck to the comma. I think that Chandler was a bit comma happy because every paragraph, consisting of about six sentences on average, probably has six or seven commas at least that s a lot for one small paragraph! Small paragraphs are also a characteristic of Chandler s style. Not including the conversational paragraphs, I would say that Chandler s average paragraph was six sentences. The sentences say what they say; they are not long winded, layered sentences, but quick and to the point sentences. The words in the sentences are not by any means elaborate either. It might take longer to find a word with more than two syllables than a colon! This technique is very effective to let the reader follow the plot easier; the words are not ones that an average intellectual person would stumble over. Possibly the most famous of Chandler s techniques is his use of similes. The man must eat, sleep and breathe similes because they are everywhere! If the reader were to open the book to any page, most likely there will be a simile on it. For instance, randomly opening my copy of The Big Sleep, I turn to page 81 and find this: People who spend their money for second hand sex jags are as nervous as dowagers who can t find the restroom (81). ... • 35. Essay on Risk Taking In our lives, it is important to exercise self command. However, we should not be so concerned with the future that we stifle the present. The question becomes what balance should we strike between self command and risks? What kinds of risks are acceptable or unacceptable? In this essay, we will use two examples of risks to show the distinction between the two and arrive at a conclusion as to the balance one should have between risk and self command. The first example we will use is of a person who spends his life savings on a lottery ticket and does not win the lottery. The second is of a person who spends his life savings on a hunch regarding a cure for AIDS, a hunch that is false. Before we make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now that we have several definitions of acceptable risks, we may ask how these definitions, which seem piecemeal and unrelated, can all combine to form one definition of acceptable risk. The best way to do this is to examine the two cases that lie before us and relate the definitions to them. In the process of doing so, we will determine which risk is acceptable and which is not. Risks in the example: the lottery and the AIDS cure If the average person on the street were presented with the case of spending one s life savings on a lottery ticket and losing or spending the same sum on a false hunch regarding an AIDS cure, he or she would

For the most part though, all the answers would be consistent with one idea: the AIDS cure is simply quot;worth quot; more and thus is a more acceptable risk. There might be several reasons for this. One could assume, for example, that the only person who would attempt to cure AIDS would be a doctor with sufficient experience in the field. It would follow, then, that the odds of finding a cure for AIDS would be much greater than the odds of winning the lottery. To win the lottery, one has to draw 6 numbers out of 46 (a probability that is very low). However, curing AIDS with medical experience is a less risky endeavor. In this instance, trying to cure AIDS would be a greater moral good because it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Reality Of Romantic Love The lives of numerous people within large societies, including Scandinavians, are culturally constructed. These cultural norms are passed down through countless generations, nevertheless Scandinavian countries are especially influenced through arts and literature. The norms people learn are always taken as a grain of salt, often accepting them as inevitable and natural without question. Though, in analyzing and challenging these cultural constructs, one is quick to realize that a few of the viewpoints are just meager conventions of their particular culture. The realization of this can show anyone that other views can be more realistic in function. For example, a Scandinavian cultural norm that should be reviewed is the idea of marriage being based on romantic love. When investigated, this notion in our society is discovered as a deceptive explanation of reality. Even though Scandinavians have very few doubts about romantic love being real, numerous societies throughout the world see this idea as strange, particularly when marriage is involved. A marriage based off of romantic love is exclusive to the industrial west, whereas other cultures marry for social and economic reasons love may or may not follow suit. One of the popular ideas about love and marriage is that they are synonyms, which arise from the same motifs, and cover similar human necessities. Like many common beliefs this idea also rests not on real facts, but in superstition. Love and marriage have little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
