This year marks the 202nd anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tambora. Many have never heard
of this explosion, but Tambora had massive historical effects. Let s explore what this explosion was
and how it impacted culture in the 1800 s. Mount Tambora erupted on the Island of Sumbawa on
April 5th in 1815. It was recorded as the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history (Britannica).
The effect of this massive eruption traveled far beyond the small Indonesian island. It impacted
multiple and incredibly diverse aspects of society across Asia, Europe and North America. It
affected art, literature, transportation, climate, economies, health, opium production and even
American religion.
The volcano had been dormant for hundreds of years and this violent explosion lasted days,
sending ash into the atmosphere (D arcy Wood). At the time, there were both native villagers
living in the area and British officers, as the area was a colony under the British crown. Most of
the surviving records of the explosion come from these British officers, some of whom didn t
actually witness the explosion but heard it and assumed the explosion was from rebels on the
island. A captain of a nearby East India Company ship reported ash falling out of the sky and By
noon, the light that had remained in the eastern part of the horizon disappeared, and complete
darkness had covered the face of day (D arcy Wood). At the time of the explosion another British
subject, Sir Thomas Raffles, was the governor of Java, Indonesia. His compiled record of first
hand accounts confirming the blackened sky and falling ash (Skulls). Similar accounts of

The roaring twenties were a fun decade for america a rebirth after world war one and celebration
of a growing and thriving country. It was not all celebration however, there was a dark and
prejudiced side of America during this time which was especially dark for the infamous pair
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. After a string of burglaries and then a double homicide
took place involving two Italian men near Sacco and Vanzetti around Charlestown Massachusetts

came in contact with a car linked to the crime and fitting the description as two Italian men they

treated as criminals gave a bad first impression and worsened the juror preconceived bias against

including the jurors joined the bandwagon of hating foreign radicals which further stacked the

entertain viewers with subtle relations with social issues. In 1994, Forrest Gump, an American epic
romantic comedy drama film was released and was directed by Robert Zemeckis based on the 1986
novel written by Winston Groom (Wikipedia). The film s setting was focused in the middle of
nearly every major event of the 1960s and 1970s.
The Subject matter of the Film, Forrest Gump, was mainly to demonstrate what happened in the
United States of America during the 1960s and 1970s. During these years, the events that was

Many years ago, mental illness was viewed as a demonic possession or a religious punishment. In
the 18th century, the attitudes towards mental illness were negative and persistent. This negativity
leads to the stigmatization and confinement of those who were mentally ill. The mentally ill were
sent to mental hospitals that were unhealthy and dangerous. A push in the mid 1950s for
deinstitutionalization began because of activists lobbying for change. Dorothea Dix was one of
these activists that helped push for change. The change called for more community oriented care
rather than asylum based care. The Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1963 closed state
psychiatric hospitals throughout the United States. Only individuals who posed an imminent
danger to themselves or someone else could be committed to state psychiatric hospitals (A Brief
History of Mental Illness and the U.S. Mental Health Care System). Deinstitutionalization meant to
improve quality of life and treatment for those who are mentally ill. This would hopefully result in
the mentally ill receiving treatment so they could live more independently. The hope was that
community mental health programs would provide this treatment but sadly there was not sufficient
or ongoing funding to meet the growing demand for these programs. Budgets for mental hospitals
were reduced but there was no increase for the community based programs. Many mentally ill

In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on this week s assigned course reading. This week
we were instructed to read Chapter Four of the FTA 215 course text. This chapter covered Tools,
Maintenance, and Repair of the AR 15 platform rifle.
In the beginning of this chapter it was explained to us that Whether you are just interested in
performing maintenance on your AR 15 style rifle, or want to build one from components, you ll
need some basic tools. At this point in the game I probably wouldn t panic if I needed to work on
my AR 10... but I definitely still need platform specific tools. I can t wait to get AR specific tools
for our future build. The author then went on to explain to us that the basic list of tools that we
should have on hand to work on an AR 15 platform rifle are as follows Ball peen hammer, Nylon
/brass hammer, Bit driver screwdriver, Torx bit set, Hex bit set, Flat head bits, Phillips head bits,
Needle nose pliers, Lower receiver vise block, Upper receiver vise block set, and a Rifle bench

Abstract: In this paper a hybrid technique is used for determining the face from an image. Face
detection is one of the tedious job to achieve with very high accuracy. In this paper we proposed a
method that combines two techniques that is Orthogonal Laplacianface (OLPP) and Particle
Swarm Optimization (PSO). The formula for the OLPP relies on the Locality Preserving Projection
(LPP) formula, which aims at п¬Ѓnding a linear approximation to the Eigen functions of the
astronomer Beltrami operator on the face manifold. However, LPP is non orthogonal and this
makes it difficult to reconstruct the information. When the set of features is found by the OLPP,
with the help of the PSO, the grouping of the image features is done and the one with the best
match from the database is given as the result. This hybrid technique gives a higher accuracy in less
processing time.

My Auntie Yumi s house was a place of refuge, my favorite place. My siblings and I spent a lot of
time there in the years our parents despised each other. We escaped my drunk, avoidant father for
the shade of the century old plumeria tree in Auntie Yumi s front yard. We recoiled from my mother
s violent, hate filled outbursts by retreating to Auntie Yumi s kitchen, where the screenless windows
welcomed cool breezes and feather light drizzle, and the smell of the mosquito punk smoldering

Nearly half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce, but there s still a lot of stigma

As a thirteen year old I could only watch game shows for so long, and that day I could not take

drinking of palm wine and with the help of his palm wine tapster, he could drink as much as he
wanted together with his friends. His tapster finally dies after falling from a tall palm tree whilst
tapping palm wine.The man who is referred to as the palm winedrunkard buries the body of his
tapster and embarks on a very long journey to find him in the land of the dead, which reveals
various supernatural encounters throughout his journey. Although the author masterfully uses
magical realism, personification, simile and irony to vividly tell the story of the drunkard, the
improper poor use of proper grammar surprisingly made the text more understandable to read.
The setting of this story is not clearly disclosed but from the author s choice of words like the
use of juju , traveling from bushes to bushes and native blacksmiths , there is a clear depiction of
a typical African village setting. In the story, the author seeks to create a picture of a world of
