non identifiable geographic information, and questions concerning practices to prevent VAP based on
evidence supported guidelines. The authors report three major findings; participants frequently
practiced VAP prevention measures, the rate of adherence to ineffective measures is relatively high,
and a substantial portion did not know the VAP rate for their institutions. The authors concluded
consumers, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other organization s efforts to implement
mandatory reporting of hospital infections, including VAP, the need for a VAP definition suitable for
individual organizations, a need for a

who has written many famous poems which includes The Road Not Taken and Stopping by woods on
snowy evening . In the poem Stopping by woods on snowy evening, Frost explain how the speaker has
though task which includes deciding whether to forget his problems and stay with the nature and stay
far away from people or go back and follow his responsibilities and spend rest of his life in city. As
compare to William Wordsworth have also written many poem including I wandered lonely as a cloud
which shows affinity for nature. William Wordsworth in his poem The world is too much with us,
represents similar theme as how humans have lost their connections with nature, in which in his
opinion it is now only found in memories. In his opinion, we are no longer connected with natural
world. Frost and Wordsworth in their respective poems uses unique rhyme, scheme, symbolism,
metaphor and alliteration to explain their own perspective on how people struggles between
modernize world and nature of the world and end neglecting the natural world. Frost, in his opening
line of his poem uses an Imagery sentence, Whose woods these are I think I know. (1 2) To point out
where he is and as per his knowledge who owns this land. He also mentions that the owner lives in
village where civilization lies. Speaker then stated how he wanted to stay with the nature and admire

Conflict at Work
Definition of Conflict
Interpersonal Conflict occurs between two or more persons when attitudes, motives, values,
expectations or activities are incompatible and if those people perceive themselves to be in
disagreement (John Hunt, 1982)
Conflict Theory
Conflict theory talks about why people think and act the way they do and what conditions and causes
influence a certain response in human behaviour. While there have been many different views on
conflict theory and it has taken a multitude of different forms, it often seems that the Marxian theory is
the one that represents the predominant example of conflict theory in sociological literature.
The Marxist theory of conflict argues that there is a huge difference between social ... Show more

Advantages and Disadvantages of Conflict
As conflict is created under disagreement and often disputation, it is natural to have negative impact.
When people engage in misplaced competitive behavior, then the conflict comes and both the
organization and individuals suffer. The difficulty of facing a conflict is that it can often be destructive

Spiritual condition evaluation
Throughout the life of my person of interest, knowledge of the existence of a creator has had a
crippling effect in his struggle to reconcile his perception of life and the great desire for divine
approval and acceptance. This is a result of the common belief that moral and spiritual development is
attained through the shedding of dogmatic belief structures, resulting in the elimination of God
towards the attainment of self realization.
Strangely, although the secular aspect is quite vividly seen in his way of life, the religious references
and biblical allusions cannot be ignored. Despite the lack of cultivation and learning in the morals and
ethics of Christianity, he is able to form his own code of behavior based on example and the behavior
he views from others. It should be noted that his instinctive sense of morality comes without
knowledge of God or a creator and while this may seem to be an atheistic or at least secular way of
thinking about how morality is inborn it is impossible to ignore the way the Bible and religious
learning influence even this aspect of his life.
It would seem that he views other people as closer to God, not simply because of his own isolation,
but because he witnesses their apparent ability to function in a world of God. This is seen on his act of
acquiring a sense of morality through observation of behaviors of others
It is evident

Marxism And Realism
Realism, Marxism, and the U.S. North Korean foreign policy
Athena Jones
Intro to Foreign affairs
IUPUI
This essay will delve into United States foreign policy for North Korea explaining both perspectives
of the theories Marxism and Realism relating to international relations. The main focus of the overall
policy in question from the last paper was strategic patience, nuclear proliferation, economic
sanctions, and hacking. Another interesting and relevant topic, to be added, is about the food aid
provided repeatedly by the U.S. in false hope for possible proliferation of North Korea.
Marxism is a theory of capitalism, and a historical structural theory. This limits what we can glean
directly from Marxism about international ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marxism clearly favors technological progress, though Marx himself was often critical of social
effects that technical change had on the employment and working conditions of laborers (Roth, 2010,
p. 1241, 1246). Thus, I feel Orthodox Marxism for favor denuclearization for weapons systems, and
encourage nuclear power for the potential benefits of hastening revolution of the working class. Neo
Marxist would probably be more fervent about nuclear deproliferation. I think this is true because they
would view the reliance on the supreme leader as the number one factor preventing revolution, and if
the supreme leader provides defense in the form of nuclear weapons, and cheap power from nuclear
power plants, the proletariat becomes more dependant on the system. This would delay revolution, and

Why Do Scientists Come Up Hypotheses
This paper will be talking about hypotheses and theories that have been proven over time with the
experience of how scientists came up with their own hypothesis and proved them or have other people
prove them wrong. Its goes over claims, evidence and reasonings scientists gave to prove their
hypothesis correct. Russian Chemist A.I. Oparin and English Geneticist J.B.S. Haldane were the first
scientists involved and conceived the Primordial Soup Hypothesis. It was developed in the year 1924.
These scientists claimed that the building blocks of the life came from one simple molecule that was
formed from the atmosphere (without oxygen) and was called organic soup . Now,evidence suggests
that the first organisms were autotrophs. Two new scientists, Chemists Stanley Miller and Physicist
Harold Urey, did a famous experiment 30 years later in 1950. Their experiment consisted of mixing
gases to present primitive earth. the gases used were:Methane,Ammonia,Water,Hydrogen, and no
oxygen, Then they electrocuted the mixture to signify ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

an advanced extraterrestrial civilization, or can be spread to earth other other planets by humans.
(Panspermia Theory) The evidence to prove this hypothesis are quite a lot so here are a few: In early

Analysis Of A Doll s House
A Doll s House is an iconic play focusing on the themes of respect and reputation, lies and deceit, men
and masculinity, and women and femininity. It emphasizes physical aspects of women, while
excluding influence on the men s appearance, giving insight into the time period. It shows how society
judged others while presenting information about how reputation influenced relationships and
marriage, leaving the audience pondering what would have happened to the Helmer family if Nora
had been unattractive. Both men and women were harshly judged, in different ways, and this
judgment impacted relationships and how they functioned.
From analysis of the play, the audience can gather that the people of the time period were very
materialistic. The female roles in the play are objectified, and treated like play things. The husband of
the protagonist, Torvald, tells Nora Why shouldn t I look at my dearest treasure?

at all the beauty that
is mine, all my very own? (Ibsen, 62). He is possessive of Nora, and claims that her beauty is all his
and his only, implying that he owns her. As one of the few male characters of the play, his actions and
personality reflect on the mentality of other men during the time period. Torvald s attitude towards her
is contrasted with that of Dr. Rank. Dr. Rank treats her as an equal and adores her presence, not just
her appearance, which is made clear when he comments that she should attend the next costume party
as a good fairy, but also mentions that

The Elasticity Of Babies And Children s Brains
Infants have an incredible mind in that they have the ability to learn and master a language in a
relatively quick matter of time. The elasticity of babies and children s brains is remarkable. It has been
quite astonishing to watch my eleven month old niece grow and learn as she studies the things that my
family and I say and do. She understands a range of words and sentences even though she is not able
to actually articulate them yet. Soon she will be going from a blabbering mumbo jumbo speaking baby
to being able to annunciate clear, complex words and sentences in only a matter of years.
Neuroscientists are now able to paint a picture of the transitional period of what happens in a baby s
brain during this learning process. When a baby is born, the brain can recognize about 800 sounds,
called phonemes. These sounds arrange all the words in every language around the world. When the
baby grows from six to twelve months, they enter what neuroscientists call a sensitive period, in
which the brain is prepared to assemble the first basic lessons of language. The infant s brain is most
susceptible to learning the sounds of their language at six months for vowels and at nine months for
constants. Research shows that the sensitive period only lasts but a few months but can be stretched
for a longer period of time if the child is exposed to a second language. On average, a child s brain
contains the elasticity to be able to learn a second language with articulacy until they

Why Is Benjamin Franklin Called The Picture Perfect...
Nate Locatelli
Mr. Pisenti
Period 1
11/2/17
Benjamin Franklin was the picture perfect self made man. From seemingly nothing, he became a
successful musician, author, scientist, and printer. In his free time, he helped found and build a
country.
The key to Franklin s success was his desire and his need to constantly improve himself on all fronts.
His quest for excellence began at only the age of 20. It was then that he thought of a program that
would motivate and push him to possess more virtuous habits. Since he was also a perfectionist, he
drew up a list of 13 virtues, and created a chart on which to keep track of his progress in living them.
Each week he would focus on one virtue while also keeping track of the others. He would then move
on to the next virtue and so on, eventually going through four cycles of each of the virtues in a single
year.
When he failed to live up to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To make the most of his time, he created a schedule for himself. To begin the day the right way, not
only regarding order, but living well in general. This helped Franklin focus on things he could do to
serve his fellow man and help his society as he went about his daily routine. Franklin examined how
he had spent his hours and whether he had done the good things he had planned on doing, as well as if
he had taken action on spontaneous opportunities to lend others a helping hand.
Benjamin Franklin s moral and social philosophies inspired and still inspire millions around the world.
Becoming a self made man is a long and tough task. Improve yourself, which will then improve the
society around you. Slight slip ups are impossible to avoid when trying to follow strict ideals. Franklin
s purpose was to make people aware of their inclinations and to help them overcome the natural
tendencies of themselves, which would limit our dependence on other people. Benjamin Franklin is an
inspiration to us

Should America Be An All-Born Citizen Essay
Should the United States of America be an All American born country? Should all citizens be born
citizens? These are the questions we have been asking ourselves for centuries here in the States.
Whether we agree with the illegal immigrants coming into this country or not, it will always be an
issue. It is unquestionable that we the people need expand our thoughts and prepare a plan for America
and these new coming and already here immigrants. America should allow non criminal immigrants to
have the opportunity to become citizens.
These aliens increase crime rates in the US. Many people argue this without knowing the actual
statistics on the claim. Immigrants have lower crime rates than native born and natural born citizens. A

As of now America has employed a tremendous amount of undocumented immigrants, over 8.4
million. These immigrants make up only 3.7 percent of the US population, but yet represent 5.2
percent in the US labor force. Also the agricultural workforce is dependent of these undocumented
immigrants. Studies have shown that at least 6 out of 10 farm workers are undocumented. A recent
survey shows that 78 percent of the agricultural workers are foreign born and in order to get here, had
to cross a border.
Why deport aliens if it s cost is high and they can improve the economy by staying in the states.
Recent studies prove my statement. The United States spends more on deportation and border patrol
than annual gross domestic product of 80 countries. As of now the United States spends $3.5 billion
more on border enforcement than they spend on law enforcement in their country. This comes down to
$18 billion each year. If all undocumented immigrants were to be deported or chose self deportation
the US s GDP would get a massive hit with a loss of $2.6 trillion. If America decides to remove all the
immigrant it would cost a breathtaking amount of $285 billion, If I place a perspective on it that is
more understandable, that money could be used to hire one million new teachers and pay them for five
total years, it s

World War Two Essay example
World War Two
On June 18, 1812, President Madison of the United States and Congress declared war on Great
Britain. On June 25, the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte led his army in Europe across the
Nieman River into Russia.(1) Although these two events were thousands of kilometers apart they were
directly connected to each other. To some extent, the Americans declared war in protest against
measures that were part of Britain s effort to defeat Napoleon with the use of blockades. There are
many interesting aspects to the War of 1812, including the fact of why it even happened. Britain and
the United States had more reasons to remain friends than to start a war. The intent of this essay is to

The Twelve Congress, which received Madison s war message proved to be dominated by a group of
young men known as the War Hawks .(5) These men were chiefly from the west and south who
resented the injuries inflicted on the United States by Great Britain during the War for Independence,
and were seeking retribution.(6) Like many other Americans, they believed the manifest destiny of the
United States was to control all of British North America.
This American dream of major conquest of North America was made clear in a speech given by
Congressman Richard Johnston of Kentucky I shall never die contented until I see her [Britain]
expulsion from North America, and her territories incorporated with United States. (7) Mr. Felix
Grundy concurred with Mr. Johnston by stating I am willing to receive the Canadians as adopted
brethren;... I therefore feel anxious not only to add the Floridas to the south but the Canadas to the
north of this Empire... (8) America now had their major objective for the war and despite objections
by New England and New York, war was declared by a slim margin on June 18,1812.
Logically this war was a serious threat to Canada, since it was only in North America that the U.S.
could hope to defeat the British. Geographically, the struggle

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of State Owned...
State owned enterprises are regarded as a particular circumstance of business organisations and
considered as the basis of economic growth in many countries (Zhang, 2011). It can be seen that the
proportion of state owned companies has increased from nine percent in 2005 to 23 percent in 2014
especially in China which has a proportion of 15 percent in 2014 (PwC, 2015). Furthermore, state
owned companies might be a necessary tool for development in emerging countries, because they can
be directed and achieved by governments. Although state owned companies have played an important
role in an economy, they sometimes seem to perform poorly compared with private sectors on average
in many countries, partly because the goals of public policy sometimes are complicated to be achieved
(World Bank Group, 2014). Therefore, many countries have decided to privatise because they have
expected that private sectors would operate and perform better than the government would do. Thus,
privatisation has become an international phenomenon globally particularly in addressing inefficiency
from state enterprises. However, there might have some benefits and drawbacks of privatisations, but
all of the procedures are most likely to depend on the quality of contracts and regulation in each
circumstance. For this reason, this essay will examine: firstly, the agency costs that seem to occur in
state owned companies, secondly a privatisation will be analysed as a result from those costs. Thirdly,

positive and sees African Americans as friends. While Tucker sees them as outcasts of society, he
doesn t want them winning their Civil Rights any time soon. I can also say that they are kind of
relatable because they both are able to get a job and have plenty of food to eat. These are just some
differences and some things they have in common. In conclusion, I believe that Miriam is more free

African families are struggling to achieve their dream to be free, but still keep on walking forwards

Portrayal Of Attila
Portrayal of Attila
As we know, being a leader requires being influential or being a charisma, whether its in a positive or
a negative way.
Though, scrolling through the pages of history, we sometimes see the portrayal of leading figures that
have been depicted differently in numerous descriptions. When it comes to one of the most dreading
military leaders throughout history, Attila, who unified and ruled over the the barbaric nomadic called
the Huns. Many accounts depicted such leader in different or similar horizons but with numerous
approaches and backgrounds. Prosper, a Christian reporter; Jordanes, an official in the Roman
government; a Greek writer known as Priscus; lastly Ammianus Marcilinus together a Roman soldier
and historian all depicted the leader, who would later be granted with the name Scourge of God ,
depending on their perspectives and the way they were treated.
If we look and evaluate the accounts on Attila, there are differences and similarities. However, they
are not entirely opposite; in fact, they share some definite commonalities. The most obvious similarity
that we can easily tell about the accounts is that their authors arose inside the Roman empire. Also,
they all want to focus solely on the facts about the leader not other unnecessary information. The
Roman Empire which was recognized for its civilized culture, innovations and social organization,
was the most competitive rival for the Huns, and the Empire saw Attila as a real threat having

Afghanistan Post Imperialism
Borders have always lead to separation, but in the era of New Imperialism European governments
began to reconsider division as not merely an effect of borders but a powerful aspect of them. Many
imperialist powers used a divide and conquer strategy while creating borders, and GB was certainly no
exception. Whether it was intentional or not in the case of Afghanistan, GB divided the Pashtuns, the
negative effects of which are still being felt today. In present day Afghanistan, Pashtuns make up 42%
of the population, they are the largest ethnic group. In present day Pakistan, Pashtuns make up 15% of
the population, making them the the second largest ethnic group. After GB separated Pashtuns, the

Just as civil conflict led to international conflict, international conflict lead to additional threats from
other countries. Although GB only became involved with Afghanistan to prevent Russia from
invading, within two centuries their involvement became futile. In 1979, Soviets invaded Afghanistan.
Even after a long period of independence in Afghanistan, Afghan troops were unable to defeat the
Soviets. The war was brutal, and lasted for an entire decade. Afghanistan remained a weak state from
the Soviet Afghan war, which made them susceptible to intervention from the U.S in 2001. Both
events, the Soviet invasion and the arrival of American troops, can be traced back to the border. The
border led to complex issues which occurred in quick succession, therefore Afghanistan and Pakistan
had to pay attention to the issues that were right in front of them, because they were so apparent and
pressing. However, as Af and Pak were distracted, more powerful countries like America and Russia
were able to invade. It was an awareness of surrounding political climates that kept Russia and GB out
of Afghanistan during the first Anglo Afghan war, but with their own borders and issues to worry
about Af and Pak paid no attention to other

Zen In The First Principle By Derek Lin
What is Zen? Zen is something that can not be put into words. There are a few things that come close
to attempting to describe what Zen is, but still do not fully reach the teachings of Zen. One attempt by
Tao translator and philosophy author Derek Lin at defining what Zen is: Zen means being free of the
distractions and illusory conflicts of the material world. Being free of the distractions and illusory
conflicts of the material world. A story from the book; Zen flesh, Zen bones relates directly to this
saying. The story The First Principle (pp. 39 40) goes along the lines of a master trying to create a

The Addiction Of Cell Phones Essay
The Addiction of Cell Phones A bus driver, who was responsible for transportation of children from
school to home, pulled out his phone and began texting. Soon after, the driver swerved the school bus
and entered into another lane crashing into another bus and toppled over, killing two children and one
adult (Murdock). Phone addiction is a new addiction associated with the use of cell phones and using
it for many hours. In recent times, the falling prices of mobile phones have led to the affordability of
the devices with more people owning a mobile phone, especially smartphones. Studies continue to
establish whether phone addiction affects people, how it affects them and the different ways it affects
different genders and ages. An international poll of 5,000 Britons, Americans, Chinese, South
Koreans, South Africans, Indians, Brazilians, and Indonesians found that most people spent hours on
their smartphones (Gilbert). 84% respondents revealed that it is impossible for them to spend a day
without their smartphones, with 50% sleeping with their phones next to them like a teddy bear
(Gilbert). Over 20% check their smart phones every ten minutes, with 24% using it to set up
rendezvous meetings with those they were having affairs with (Gilbert). From these statistics, it is
becoming apparent that increase in reliance of cell phones is rising signaling the evolution of usage of
phones from a habit to that of addiction. It is important to examine the addiction that is sweeping

for guidelines to neutralize student athlete and administrator responsibilities as it relates to injuries.
Searles alleged that he informed his basketball coach and trainer of a knee injury, which was later
diagnosed as patellar tendinitis. Searles claims that his coach demanded that he continue playing after,
even though his athletic trainer did not agree. Searles subsequently ended his college basketball career

Evidence in the form of Circumstantial
This comprises of indirect evidence which aids in detection of crime while not fully proving it. The

For searches without a warrant, then its mandatory to comply with standards of probable cause is the

Essay On Allegory Of Women In The Victorian Era
The Victorian Age was defined by Queen Victoria s reign from 1837 to 1901. In the 19th century,
England became the first industrializes nation. During this period education and literacy became
extremely important, one reason being that Queen Victoria was pro women s education. With literacy
becoming an integral part of this era, poetry began to grow. This era began prose of controversial
debates and uncounted poems and events involved beauty and emotions. Educating children and
women became very crucial in this period. Numerous writers such as Tennyson, husband, and wife
Robert and Elizabeth Browning, Christina Rossetti and brother Dante Rossetti had risen during this
time and brought poetry and writing in a new light. I wanted to dissect the society s view of fallen
women during this era by using Christina Rossetti s Goblin Market , Dante Rossetti s Jenny , and
Anonymous The Great Social Evil . As Merriam Webster s Dictionary states, an allegory is a symbolic
representation or the expression by means of symbolic fictional figures and actions of truths or
generalizations about human existence. The fallen women allegory was the most appealing. The
allegory of fallen women came about during the Victorian Era with prostitutes growing as a
profession. There were at least 300 thousand prostitutes during this period, multiple young women
chose this profession because some were disowned, seen as corrupted, or felt that this profession paid

The importance of designing a service that responds to the needs of the children and young people.
The principle of designing services around children and young people is to be able to meet all their
needs. Every child is unique , it is important that all practitioners understand this. Firstly you need to
establish what their care needs are so you are able to meet them in the correct way. This can be done
by communicating with parents and other services connected with the child. If the service is meeting
the individuals needs the parents/ careers should have no reason to be unhappy with the service
provided and the child should remain in the setting. The children must be encouraged to meet their full
potential. The 5 outcomes of the Every Child Matters provides a requirement for settings to aim high

Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay
Aristotle s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been used
for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete,
and of a certain magnitude... in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting
the proper purgation of these emotions (House 82). Aristotle believed that the most important part of a
strong tragedy was the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character, diction, etc. would
emerge. Aristotle states, the principle of tragedy the soul, if you like is the plot, and second to that the
characters (Whalley 27). Shakespeare s Macbeth and Hamlet essentially mirror this definition. While
it is true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlet tackles the tragedy within a family, but Macbeth is written as a tragedy that occurs between
friends and associates. While extremely ambitious to be king, at the opening of the play Macbeth is a
loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from the three witches
that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and wield power
overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as, the action is
human, the energy is human... the action is plotted and prepared by the maker (Whalley, 23). This is
evident when Macbeth utters to himself, Let not light see my black and deep desires making known
his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52 53). His action is a premeditated response and is
aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed.
After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful
Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a character
is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough to hold their
role in a production (House, 91). Hamlet is a wealthy and privileged prince; however, he deals with
the problems similar to most common people. He is confused, emotional, obsessive, and paranoid
about the circumstances surrounding the death of his father the king. He lacks faith

The Environmental Impact Of The Fast Fashion Industry
Fashion is a clear reflection of the social, economic, political and cultural period. More and more
people are becoming concerned with their style and more importantly, how it affects their wallet. This
mindset has paved the way for the fast fashion industry to flourish. Fast fashion is clothing [being
produced] at increasingly low prices, prices so low that many consumers consider this clothing to be
disposable... the clothing equivalent of fast food. (Claudio) Consumers are so caught up on the fact
that they are getting a bargain, that they totally disregard the uncomfortable reality surrounding the
dark side of mass consumer fashion. The fast fashion industry has created a culture of mindless
consumerism.
One of the many things, people are unaware of, that is attached to fast fashion, is its environmental
impact. People are completely willing to turn a blind eye to the fact that this business is the second
most polluting industry in the world in order to be trendy. The first, and most obvious environmental
impact of the fashion industry is its pollution of water by the use of harmful, toxic chemicals, dyes,
and detergents. The textile industry uses more than 8,000 [types of] chemicals annually, (Scott). Some
of which, are carcinogenic for both people and animals. In fact, the World Health Organization reports
that in China, polluted water causes 75 percent of diseases and over 100,000 deaths annually. This

An Unlikely Friendship Between Olivier Nakache And Eric...
Mobility, as a theme, is central to the plot of Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano s 2011 film Les
Intouchables . Although from different backgrounds, the two central characters are both, in their own
way, immobile. Driss, played by Omar Sy, suffers social immobility. Living in the banlieues of Paris
(an impoverished and often ignored area, the name for which has become pejorative, meaning slums
dominated by immigrants ), he has many social barriers which he must transcend. The immobility of
the aristocratic, quadriplegic and millionaire Phillipe, who lives in a large expensive house in a
wealthy part of Paris, is not social but physical. Phillipe, portrayed by François Cluzet, has to live his
life in a wheelchair due to a paragliding accident which left him paralysed many years ago. The tale of
an unlikely friendship between two men from opposite milieu which follows creates an interesting
film in which numerous boundaries, both social and physical, are seen to be transcended. This essay
will discuss how the theme of mobility is represented by directors Nakache and Toledano in Les
Intouchables , including a particular focus on the techniques used to highlight this theme throughout.
This can be seen, firstly, in the deliberate selection of the actors used to portray Driss and Phillipe in
order to highlight the theme of mobility in the film. Omar Sy, an actor of Senegalese descent, was
chosen to play the part of Driss in the true story inspiration upon which

Human Nature Of Curiosity
Curiosity within
Curiosity is human nature that people are born with. From the moment someone is born they becomes
curious of all their surroundings and what they can do. Curiosity also leads to instability because every
one becomes curious sooner, and or later someone will break the rules or do something they aren t
supposed to. Also, if one realizes they aren t really happy then they will become curious and try to find
something that will make them happy. This will lead to instability in society where a small amount of
people like a certain thing and others don t. It will all lead to people arguing and destroying the so
called perfection that they have reached. Therefore, stability will never be reached because of people s
curiosity, and because of society s will of trying to be perfect which makes it imperfect.
In the World State everyone has a certain job to do and the people are separated according to their
caste system, there are Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. They are ordered from higher
class to lower class but this doesn t stop curiosity between all of them. There are some people in the
World State that experience curiosity. Bernard Marx is one of the few that are really experiencing
curiosity and want something different. A great example is when he begins to feel something for
Lenina and when they are on a date he asks Don t you wish you were free Lenina (91). He is not the
only one though Lenina is also experiencing different emotions and she is

Word Frequency Differences
In everyday conversation, there are words that people use quite frequently and words that are used
infrequently, which has been described as Word Frequency (WF). For example, the word cow has a
higher frequency, because it utilized more often in everyday conversation, novels, magazine,
newspaper, and academia than the word tungsten, which is less used (Davies, 2012). Andrews (1989)
argued that based on this concept of WF, NS has an effect only with words that have a low WF.
Explained further, the more neighbors that a low frequency word has, the longer it takes for one to
attain mental activation for word recognition (Andrews, 1992). Furthermore it is argued that WF has
more to do with word recognition than NS effect, because it is shown that ... Show more content on

It was found that regardless of the frequency of the target word, the greater WF difference that the
neighbor word has compared to the target word, the longer the delay in word determination that occurs
(Grainger et al., 1989). In addition, it was found that the larger the amount of these higher frequency
neighbors that the target has, the longer the delay of the neighborhood word (Grainger et al., 1989).
However, studies done by Sears et al. (2006) showed no such high frequency neighbor effect when the
study was replicated in English. The reasons for such disparity is that each language might have
different word characteristic, for example English words tend to be shorter on average than French,
German, or Spanish, which can have more neighbor words, which affects word determination time

According To Ward Goodenough s The Interpretation Of Culture
One of the most significant and controversial elements found within the study of music is the
representation of culture. Although the definition of representation according to Merriam Webster is a
person or group that speaks or acts for or in support of another person or group, it is not as easily said
than done. The true act of representing another is both incredibly complex and challenging as it
contains many subjective variables. History, for example, has demonstrated the complexity of defining
what is true representation through the presence of leaders and authoritative figures who have failed to
truthfully represent the common man. As a result, the people who have no outlet for expression are
represented unjustly by those who do. Similarly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, culture has become more located in the discussion and ways in which demonstrate such
complexity than truly demonstrating the complexities of man. It is presumed that in order for true
representation to exist, it must be complex and contain many variables in order to be true. One of the
most prominent questions surrounding representation in ethnography is how to convey complexity,
especially in a culture that is so vast. But if complexity becomes the root of representation, then
representation can very easily become fixated over how to cover all aspects of a culture and to focus
more on the scientific analysis and processes of articulating the traditions found within a culture than
the actual people found within the culture. Complexity, although still a significant factor in
representation, can lead to an deviation away from what the true focus of representation should be: the
people. Even though representation does indeed contain many complex factors and unanswered
questions, the focus of a study should not centralize solely on how to answer such questions. The
complexity of representation should instead be found within the thick descriptions of what can be
simply answered: the emotions and beliefs of the people. The only form of complexity found within
representation should be found within the thick descriptions of man, By doing so, the complexities of
man becomes the focus of what true representations involves instead of the complexity of
representation in and of itself. Therefore, representation is and should be a connection to the people:
the source of what truly should be represented in the study of any

The Core Beliefs Of The Abrahamic And Messianic Faith Of...
Core beliefs are the key foundations to all dynamic religious traditions of the world. In particular, core
beliefs underpin the Abrahamic and Messianic faith of Judaism, as they offer Jewish adherents a
unique interpretation of reality. Thus, these core beliefs must be viewed through a sympathetic cultural
and historical lens. Leunig once said: Does G d exist? More to the point: what does it matter if G d
exists or not? After all everything else seems to exist, so what s the problem? raising issues concerning
G d s existence and its importance to humankind. A Jewish adherent would respond to this stimulus in
light of the particular culture lens of their variant. This is established through the varying aspects of
Jewish beliefs: the nature of G d, how one gains meaning and the view of human condition, how one
ought to live through Jewish morality, along with beliefs concerning suffering, death and the after life.
Firstly and fore mostly, Jewish adherents hold certain beliefs that address the nature of G d and this
would have an influence on how one might respond to the stimulus. In the twelfth century, Jewish
scholar Moses Maimonides summarised all 613 mitzvot, the positive and negative commandments
outlined in the Torah (Morrissey, 2010, p.125). Referred to as the Thirteen Articles of Faith, this
written composition highlights the basics of the Jewish belief system. This is demonstrated as articles

The Stonewall Riot of 1969
While it was barely a kernel of activism against the immense backdrop of advocacy during the 1960 s
and 70 s, the gay liberation movement was one of the most important challenges to the hierarchal
structures of accepted moral and scientific thought. Functioning as a minor footnote within the context
of a substantial political arena comprised of the issues of war, race and a raging women s liberation
movement, gay liberation in the late twentieth century still sought to impress upon the marginalizing
and sectarian constructions that subjugated gays to an imposed peripheral existence of personal and
public abhorrence. The Stonewall Riot of 1969 signaled the start of a substantial social movement, the
dissemination of which would permeate the gay community and call into action an assault on the
mechanisms of social order, public legislation and cultural dispositions that sustained a framework of
persecution against homosexual men and women. The efforts of gay liberation activists during the
sexual revolution of the late twentieth century made possible the near expulsion of constraints on
sexual expression and gave way to a new rhetoric of pride and affirmation. For some gay men and
women, just being a homosexual in the late 20th century meant being a part of the movement no
political agenda necessary. Sexual politics, after all, have a visceral quality that isn t easy to ignore,
which D Emilio and Freedman attest to when they recognize that gayness itself symbolized an

A Successful Man As A Self Made Man
The self made man is often portrayed as a story of rags to riches. A person who overcomes any
obstacle thrown at him/her and defies all odds. These stories incite a reaction in readers, often leaving
them in awe. How can a person become so successful, even though the universe is seemingly against
them? The truth Malcolm Gladwell uncovered in his novel Outliers is the people at the top of the
ladder did not have everything stacked against them. Gladwell says that there is no such concept as a
self made man. Successful people have been helped along the way by a variety of reasons, such as
how wealthy their family was, to their birth month. While I feel that there is no such thing as a self
made man because circumstance and motivation are a key factor in how successful one becomes, I
feel as if a person s luck has a lot to deal with them thriving in their career.
In addition, throughout Outliers it becomes apparent that the circumstances people have been born
into assists them to surpass any competition. For example, technology legends such as Bill Gates, Eric
Schmidt, Vinod Khosla, and Steve Jobs were all born in a one year time span. What a crazy
coincidence that four of the most successful men in technology were all born so close to one another.
The truth is that certain opportunities arose for all of them in college: easy access to computers. If they
had been any older or younger, they would have missed on the opportunities to use the new
technology due to being stuck

Courtney Love is an inspiration to me because she strived to get what she wanted, formed a band that

Origins of the NHS in the United Kingdom Essay example
Origins of the NHS in the United Kingdom The NHS began in 1948 as a result of an act of Parliament
in 1946, under the guidance of Aneurin Bevan, then a Minister of the incumbent Labour Government,
and in response to the Beveridge Report on The Welfare State of 1942. Most hospitals in the UK had
previously been operated as non profit making concerns. About two thirds of them had been run by
Local Authorities (the bodies also responsible for local Fire Services, Schools, Roads etc), with about
one third of them run independently as Voluntary Hospitals. With the NHS act, these were all
compulsorily acquired and subsequently administered by the State, and all treatments became
universally available at no cost at the point of provision, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Prior to the NHS Act, hospitals had been constructed generally in places where there was sufficient
private custom to make them financially viable as individual going concerns, rather than in response
to pure local need. This resulted in a significant excess of hospital service provision, for example, in
and around London and a relative dearth in less affluent parts of the country. In the less well off
provinces, many of today s hospitals are contained in buildings that began life as poor houses , often
situated geographically in less than ideal sites for their current use. Although many would like to see
Green Field redevelopment and relocation of acute services, the cost is prohibitive. PROBLEMS One
of the biggest obstacles to successful management of the NHS, and also to any analysis of its current
well being, remains the significant lack of any valid information as to what the NHS does, how much
it costs and where the money is spent. Indeed, it is perhaps surprising that the 1990 changes were
conceived and implemented as fast as they were, given the lack of information that was available in
1988. (Ham, 1996) Attempts were made at the start to ensure that hospitals began from a level playing
field so that they were in fair competition with one another, but the sometimes 10 fold differences in
the early quoted costs for identical services in different hospitals had as much to do with differing
costs of maintaining buildings

The killings are inhumane. Sealers use clubs, sticks, guns, and spikes to murder seals, and it is not a

Why Do Scientists Come Up Hypotheses This paper will be talking about hypotheses and theories that have been proven over time with the experience of how scientists came up with their own hypothesis and proved them or have other people prove them wrong. These scientists claimed that the building blocks of the life came from one simple molecule that was formed from the atmosphere (without oxygen) and was called organic soup . Now,evidence suggests that the first organisms were autotrophs. Two new scientists, Chemists Stanley Miller and Physicist Harold Urey, did a famous experiment 30 years later in 1950. • 9. Analysis Of A Doll s House A Doll s House is an iconic play focusing on the themes of respect and reputation, lies and deceit, men and masculinity, and women and femininity. It emphasizes physical aspects of women, while excluding influence on the men s appearance, giving insight into the time period. It shows how society judged others while presenting information about how reputation influenced relationships and marriage, leaving the audience pondering what would have happened to the Helmer family if Nora had been unattractive. Both men and women were harshly judged, in different ways, and this judgment impacted relationships and how they functioned. From analysis of the play, the audience can gather that the people of the time period were very materialistic. The female roles in the play are objectified, and treated like play things. The husband of the protagonist, Torvald, tells Nora Why shouldn t I look at my dearest treasure? at all the beauty that is mine, all my very own? (Ibsen, 62). He is possessive of Nora, and claims that her beauty is all his and his only, implying that he owns her. As one of the few male characters of the play, his actions and personality reflect on the mentality of other men during the time period. Torvald s attitude towards her is contrasted with that of Dr. Rank. Dr. Rank treats her as an equal and adores her presence, not just her appearance, which is made clear when he comments that she should attend the next costume party as a good fairy, but also mentions that ... The elasticity of babies and children s brains is remarkable. It has been quite astonishing to watch my eleven month old niece grow and learn as she studies the things that my family and I say and do. She understands a range of words and sentences even though she is not able to actually articulate them yet. Soon she will be going from a blabbering mumbo jumbo speaking baby to being able to annunciate clear, complex words and sentences in only a matter of years. Neuroscientists are now able to paint a picture of the transitional period of what happens in a baby s brain during this learning process. When a baby is born, the brain can recognize about 800 sounds, called phonemes. These sounds arrange all the words in every language around the world. When the baby grows from six to twelve months, they enter what neuroscientists call a sensitive period, in which the brain is prepared to assemble the first basic lessons of language. The infant s brain is most susceptible to learning the sounds of their language at six months for vowels and at nine months for constants. Research shows that the sensitive period only lasts but a few months but can be stretched for a longer period of time if the child is exposed to a second language. On average, a child s brain contains the elasticity to be able to learn a second language with articulacy until they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From seemingly nothing, he became a successful musician, author, scientist, and printer. In his free time, he helped found and build a country. The key to Franklin s success was his desire and his need to constantly improve himself on all fronts. His quest for excellence began at only the age of 20. It was then that he thought of a program that would motivate and push him to possess more virtuous habits. Since he was also a perfectionist, he drew up a list of 13 virtues, and created a chart on which to keep track of his progress in living them. Each week he would focus on one virtue while also keeping track of the others. He would then move on to the next virtue and so on, eventually going through four cycles of each of the virtues in a single year. When he failed to live up to the ... Benjamin Franklin s moral and social philosophies inspired and still inspire millions around the world. Becoming a self made man is a long and tough task. State owned enterprises are regarded as a particular circumstance of business organisations and considered as the basis of economic growth in many countries (Zhang, 2011). It can be seen that the proportion of state owned companies has increased from nine percent in 2005 to 23 percent in 2014 especially in China which has a proportion of 15 percent in 2014 (PwC, 2015). Furthermore, state owned companies might be a necessary tool for development in emerging countries, because they can be directed and achieved by governments. Although state owned companies have played an important role in an economy, they sometimes seem to perform poorly compared with private sectors on average in many countries, partly because the goals of public policy sometimes are complicated to be achieved (World Bank Group, 2014). Therefore, many countries have decided to privatise because they have expected that private sectors would operate and perform better than the government would do. Thus, privatisation has become an international phenomenon globally particularly in addressing inefficiency from state enterprises. However, there might have some benefits and drawbacks of privatisations, but all of the procedures are most likely to depend on the quality of contracts and regulation in each circumstance. The most obvious similarity that we can easily tell about the accounts is that their authors arose inside the Roman empire. I wanted to dissect the society s view of fallen women during this era by using Christina Rossetti s Goblin Market , Dante Rossetti s Jenny , and Anonymous The Great Social Evil . As Merriam Webster s Dictionary states, an allegory is a symbolic representation or the expression by means of symbolic fictional figures and actions of truths or generalizations about human existence. The fallen women allegory was the most appealing. The allegory of fallen women came about during the Victorian Era with prostitutes growing as a profession. There were at least 300 thousand prostitutes during this period, multiple young women chose this profession because some were disowned, seen as corrupted, or felt that this profession paid the greatest so that they could ... • 30. Hamlet and Macbeth Compared as Aristotelian Tragedies Essay Aristotle s Poetics is often considered the blueprint to a successful tragedy; his outline has been used for hundreds of years. Aristotle defines a tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude... in the form of an action, not of narrative; through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions (House 82). Aristotle believed that the most important part of a strong tragedy was the plot, and from that, the other elements such as character, diction, etc. would emerge. Aristotle states, the principle of tragedy the soul, if you like is the plot, and second to that the characters (Whalley 27). Shakespeare s Macbeth and Hamlet essentially mirror this definition. While it is true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet tackles the tragedy within a family, but Macbeth is written as a tragedy that occurs between friends and associates. While extremely ambitious to be king, at the opening of the play Macbeth is a loyal servant to King Duncan of Scotland. However, upon hearing a prophecy from the three witches that predicts his rise to the throne, an insatiable sense of ambition to succeed and wield power overwhelms the good nature of Macbeth. Aristotle describes this part of tragedy as, the action is human, the energy is human... the action is plotted and prepared by the maker (Whalley, 23). This is evident when Macbeth utters to himself, Let not light see my black and deep desires making known his intentions to murder the king (Macbeth I.iii.52 53). His action is a premeditated response and is aggravated by his all too human emotions, ambitions and greed. After the action element of the story, the character is the next central component in a successful Aristotelian tragedy. According to Aristotle, the character must be true to life and natural; a character is supposed to be a perfectly related to the audience while remaining believable enough to hold their role in a production (House, 91). Hamlet is a wealthy and privileged prince; however, he deals with the problems similar to most common people. He is confused, emotional, obsessive, and paranoid about the circumstances surrounding the death of his father the king. He lacks faith ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

More and more people are becoming concerned with their style and more importantly, how it affects their wallet. This mindset has paved the way for the fast fashion industry to flourish. Fast fashion is clothing [being produced] at increasingly low prices, prices so low that many consumers consider this clothing to be disposable... the clothing equivalent of fast food. (Claudio) Consumers are so caught up on the fact that they are getting a bargain, that they totally disregard the uncomfortable reality surrounding the dark side of mass consumer fashion. The fast fashion industry has created a culture of mindless consumerism. One of the many things, people are unaware of, that is attached to fast fashion, is its environmental impact. People are completely willing to turn a blind eye to the fact that this business is the second most polluting industry in the world in order to be trendy. The first, and most obvious environmental impact of the fashion industry is its pollution of water by the use of harmful, toxic chemicals, dyes, and detergents. The textile industry uses more than 8,000 [types of] chemicals annually, (Scott). Some of which, are carcinogenic for both people and animals. • 32. An Unlikely Friendship Between Olivier Nakache And Eric... Mobility, as a theme, is central to the plot of Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano s 2011 film Les Intouchables . Although from different backgrounds, the two central characters are both, in their own way, immobile. Driss, played by Omar Sy, suffers social immobility. Living in the banlieues of Paris (an impoverished and often ignored area, the name for which has become pejorative, meaning slums dominated by immigrants ), he has many social barriers which he must transcend. The immobility of the aristocratic, quadriplegic and millionaire Phillipe, who lives in a large expensive house in a wealthy part of Paris, is not social but physical. Phillipe, portrayed by François Cluzet, has to live his life in a wheelchair due to a paragliding accident which left him paralysed many years ago. The tale of an unlikely friendship between two men from opposite milieu which follows creates an interesting film in which numerous boundaries, both social and physical, are seen to be transcended. This essay will discuss how the theme of mobility is represented by directors Nakache and Toledano in Les Intouchables , including a particular focus on the techniques used to highlight this theme throughout. This can be seen, firstly, in the deliberate selection of the actors used to portray Driss and Phillipe in order to highlight the theme of mobility in the film. • 33. Human Nature Of Curiosity Curiosity within Curiosity is human nature that people are born with. From the moment someone is born they becomes curious of all their surroundings and what they can do. Curiosity also leads to instability because every one becomes curious sooner, and or later someone will break the rules or do something they aren t supposed to. Also, if one realizes they aren t really happy then they will become curious and try to find something that will make them happy. This will lead to instability in society where a small amount of people like a certain thing and others don t. It will all lead to people arguing and destroying the so called perfection that they have reached. Therefore, stability will never be reached because of people s curiosity, and because of society s will of trying to be perfect which makes it imperfect. In the World State everyone has a certain job to do and the people are separated according to their caste system, there are Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. They are ordered from higher class to lower class but this doesn t stop curiosity between all of them. There are some people in the World State that experience curiosity. Bernard Marx is one of the few that are really experiencing curiosity and want something different. • 34. Word Frequency Differences In everyday conversation, there are words that people use quite frequently and words that are used infrequently, which has been described as Word Frequency (WF). For example, the word cow has a higher frequency, because it utilized more often in everyday conversation, novels, magazine, newspaper, and academia than the word tungsten, which is less used (Davies, 2012). Andrews (1989) argued that based on this concept of WF, NS has an effect only with words that have a low WF. Explained further, the more neighbors that a low frequency word has, the longer it takes for one to attain mental activation for word recognition (Andrews, 1992). Furthermore it is argued that WF has more to do with word recognition than NS effect, because it is shown that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, studies done by Sears et al. (2006) showed no such high frequency neighbor effect when the study was replicated in English. The reasons for such disparity is that each language might have different word characteristic, for example English words tend to be shorter on average than French, German, or Spanish, which can have more neighbor words, which affects word determination time (Sears et al. 2006; Wimmer, Köhler, Grotjahn, Altmann, ... • 35. According To Ward Goodenough s The Interpretation Of Culture One of the most significant and controversial elements found within the study of music is the representation of culture. Although the definition of representation according to Merriam Webster is a person or group that speaks or acts for or in support of another person or group, it is not as easily said than done. The true act of representing another is both incredibly complex and challenging as it contains many subjective variables. History, for example, has demonstrated the complexity of defining what is true representation through the presence of leaders and authoritative figures who have failed to truthfully represent the common man. As a result, the people who have no outlet for expression are represented unjustly by those who do. Similarly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, culture has become more located in the discussion and ways in which demonstrate such complexity than truly demonstrating the complexities of man. It is presumed that in order for true representation to exist, it must be complex and contain many variables in order to be true. One of the most prominent questions surrounding representation in ethnography is how to convey complexity, especially in a culture that is so vast. But if complexity becomes the root of representation, then representation can very easily become fixated over how to cover all aspects of a culture and to focus more on the scientific analysis and processes of articulating the traditions found within a culture than the actual people found within the culture. Complexity, although still a significant factor in representation, can lead to an deviation away from what the true focus of representation should be: the people. Even though representation does indeed contain many complex factors and unanswered questions, the focus of a study should not centralize solely on how to answer such questions. The complexity of representation should instead be found within the thick descriptions of what can be simply answered: the emotions and beliefs of the people. The only form of complexity found within representation should be found within the thick descriptions of man, By doing so, the complexities of man becomes the focus of what true representations involves instead of the complexity of representation in and of itself. Therefore, representation is and should be a connection to the people: the source of what truly should be represented in the study of any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In particular, core beliefs underpin the Abrahamic and Messianic faith of Judaism, as they offer Jewish adherents a unique interpretation of reality. Thus, these core beliefs must be viewed through a sympathetic cultural and historical lens. Leunig once said: Does G d exist? More to the point: what does it matter if G d exists or not? After all everything else seems to exist, so what s the problem? raising issues concerning G d s existence and its importance to humankind. A Jewish adherent would respond to this stimulus in light of the particular culture lens of their variant. This is established through the varying aspects of Jewish beliefs: the nature of G d, how one gains meaning and the view of human condition, how one ought to live through Jewish morality, along with beliefs concerning suffering, death and the after life. Firstly and fore mostly, Jewish adherents hold certain beliefs that address the nature of G d and this would have an influence on how one might respond to the stimulus. In the twelfth century, Jewish scholar Moses Maimonides summarised all 613 mitzvot, the positive and negative commandments outlined in the Torah (Morrissey, 2010, p.125). Referred to as the Thirteen Articles of Faith, this written composition highlights the basics of the Jewish belief system. • 37. The Stonewall Riot of 1969 While it was barely a kernel of activism against the immense backdrop of advocacy during the 1960 s and 70 s, the gay liberation movement was one of the most important challenges to the hierarchal structures of accepted moral and scientific thought. Functioning as a minor footnote within the context of a substantial political arena comprised of the issues of war, race and a raging women s liberation movement, gay liberation in the late twentieth century still sought to impress upon the marginalizing and sectarian constructions that subjugated gays to an imposed peripheral existence of personal and public abhorrence. The Stonewall Riot of 1969 signaled the start of a substantial social movement, the dissemination of which would permeate the gay community and call into action an assault on the mechanisms of social order, public legislation and cultural dispositions that sustained a framework of persecution against homosexual men and women. The efforts of gay liberation activists during the sexual revolution of the late twentieth century made possible the near expulsion of constraints on sexual expression and gave way to a new rhetoric of pride and affirmation. For some gay men and women, just being a homosexual in the late 20th century meant being a part of the movement no political agenda necessary. These stories incite a reaction in readers, often leaving them in awe. How can a person become so successful, even though the universe is seemingly against them? The truth Malcolm Gladwell uncovered in his novel Outliers is the people at the top of the ladder did not have everything stacked against them. Gladwell says that there is no such concept as a self made man. Successful people have been helped along the way by a variety of reasons, such as how wealthy their family was, to their birth month. While I feel that there is no such thing as a self made man because circumstance and motivation are a key factor in how successful one becomes, I feel as if a person s luck has a lot to deal with them thriving in their career. In addition, throughout Outliers it becomes apparent that the circumstances people have been born into assists them to surpass any competition. For example, technology legends such as Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, Vinod Khosla, and Steve Jobs were all born in a one year time span. What a crazy coincidence that four of the most successful men in technology were all born so close to one another. Origins of the NHS in the United Kingdom Essay example Origins of the NHS in the United Kingdom The NHS began in 1948 as a result of an act of Parliament in 1946, under the guidance of Aneurin Bevan, then a Minister of the incumbent Labour Government, and in response to the Beveridge Report on The Welfare State of 1942. Most hospitals in the UK had previously been operated as non profit making concerns. About two thirds of them had been run by Local Authorities (the bodies also responsible for local Fire Services, Schools, Roads etc), with about one third of them run independently as Voluntary Hospitals. With the NHS act, these were all compulsorily acquired and subsequently administered by the State, and all treatments became universally available at no cost at the point of provision, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prior to the NHS Act, hospitals had been constructed generally in places where there was sufficient private custom to make them financially viable as individual going concerns, rather than in response to pure local need. This resulted in a significant excess of hospital service provision, for example, in and around London and a relative dearth in less affluent parts of the country. In the less well off provinces, many of today s hospitals are contained in buildings that began life as poor houses , often situated geographically in less than ideal sites for their current use. Although many would like to see Green Field redevelopment and relocation of acute services, the cost is prohibitive. PROBLEMS One of the biggest obstacles to successful management of the NHS, and also to any analysis of its current well being, remains the significant lack of any valid information as to what the NHS does, how much it costs and where the money is spent. Indeed, it is perhaps surprising that the 1990 changes were conceived and implemented as fast as they were, given the lack of information that was available in 1988. (Ham, 1996) Attempts were made at the start to ensure that hospitals began from a level playing field so that they were in fair competition with one another, but the sometimes 10 fold differences in the early quoted costs for identical services in different hospitals had as much to do with differing costs of maintaining buildings ...
