The newsletter provides information about recent and upcoming events at the British International School in Hanoi. Recent events included the Principal's Awards for the second term, a successful Dracula Rock Show production by Key Stage 2 students, and a challenging but successful Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's International Award expedition in Sapa. 2. From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi
The key attributes contained in the BIS
Hanoi Mission Statement which is
exemplified within our school
community by our Aide Memoire are
very important to us. They are the
words we use to ensure that we as a
school develop into a community that
values each individual person we
come into contact with. I sincerely believe that we work
hard as a school to ensure that we achieve the
expectations of our Aide Memoire. We sometimes lapse
as individuals, which is human nature, but on the whole
I am extremely proud of the way we are developing as a
school. This term alone I have seen countless examples
of our Aide Memoire manifesting itself in school life and
I would like to give you some personal examples.
Integrity
Recently a student came up to me handing over
VND200, 000 saying that he had just found it on the floor.
I asked him what I should do with it and he said we
should try to find the owner. I then asked what should
we do if we cannot find the owner and he replied we
should really try our best but if not put it into our
Community Fund to help others. I then quoted and
explained to him an English saying “Finders keepers,
losers weepers”. He simply said “No that is wrong”.
What a great example of Integrity.
Respect
Most of our students show respect by greeting each
other and staff appropriately at various stages of the
day. Not all, but most, so we will continue to persevere
to ensure that we can honestly say that we ALL do.
Caring
The Caring shown by our students who have supported
our Community and Charity projects this term has
really been exemplary.

Enquiry and Reflection
I know by my own observations and from comments
made by many teachers that our students, studying for
IGCSE and AS Level Examinations, are showing great
Enquiry and Reflection in preparing for these important
examinations. I am convinced that they will do their
best to achieve great results for themselves and make
us all proud of them. Good luck to you all!
Perseverance
The students who undertook the DoEIA Bronze and
Silver Award challenges have all shown great
perseverance in very tough circumstances. Well done
to every single one of you!
Global Citizens Learning Together
This term we have enrolled students from several
nations – India, UK, South Korea, US and Vietnam. I am
thrilled with how these students have adapted to life at
our school. It says a lot about the character of each new
student but also about the welcoming nature of our
existing students and staff. We are most certainly
developing as Global Citizens who are Learning
Together.
I do wish you all a very pleasant holiday.

4. The last week of term is always a busy
one and this started over the weekend.
The DoEIA had an excellent expedition
in Sapa. The weather was kind to them
but they had a very challenging day on
Saturday which they all coped with
very well. Mr Airdrie and the staff team
were very proud of the way they coped
with the physical and mental challenges of the weekend.
The Charity and Community Society visited Thinh Dai
Pagoda to donate the money we raised at the Tet Fair.
We are really pleased that we are beginning to develop
long term partnerships with various organisations
which allow us to engage in community work as well as
support specific projects or provide equipment to
support children in northern
Vietnam. A summary of our
charity and community events
so far this year will be in the
newsletter in the first week of
next term. We are also very
excited that our Big Draw
project with the Pagoda was
recognised by the Big Draw in
the UK for its innovative use of
the community in the project.

and all the students involved.

From Mr Christopher Short - Head of Secondary
In ‘normal’ school time this week all of Year 11 and 12P
completed their IGCSE ICT practical examination. We’re
really grateful to the whole school community for
working around the need to block off a key corridor for
two days this week. As Mr Rowlands mentioned last
week, we were also privileged to have the Israeli
Ambassador open the Ann Frank exhibition and Kelly
and Emily did a brilliant job of welcoming her
Excellency and the representative of the Dutch
Embassy to the school. On Tuesday we had our second
Sound Bites concert in the library. Students from Year 7
-10 played their own compositions; a lovely and relaxing
(for the audience) way to spend a lunchtime.
It is now traditional that we use the final half day of
school for our House Sports. Ms Wild organised a
multiple sport extravaganza with students participating
in Badminton, Rounders and Volleyball. Congratulations
to Hanoi for their victory and to all competitors for their
sportspersonship.
I hope all families have an enjoyable holiday; Year 11
and 12 will spend most of it on their last minute revision
but they too will need some relaxation as May will be a
long month for them.
SECONDARY SOUND BITES

5. Term 2 has come to a dramatic close in
KS2 with the excellent production of
‘The Dracula Rock Show’ on Thursday
afternoon. It was truly an amazing
performance. The children acted,
danced, sang, played and filled their
roles in outstanding fashion. Children
and staff had worked tirelessly for
weeks in preparing this show, and every single person
involved deserves a huge ‘Thank you’ for their
contribution. It really was a tremendous team effort. I
was delighted to see so many of our parents and
families in the audience and I know the children
appreciated the support, the laughs and the applause.
It was also wonderful today to see our Primary
Principal’s Award winners go up on stage to receive
their trophy. Teachers choose children to receive the
Principal’s Award each term for a variety of reasons,
whether it be to do with academic gains, having a
positive attitude, showing thoughtfulness and caring to
others, following the values in our Aide Memoire or just
generally being a good role model to their peers. It is
never an easy decision for teachers to make as so many
of our children deserve recognition for their efforts, but
I must agree that the children on stage today are all fine
examples of what it means to be a BIS Hanoi pupil. Well
done!

There has been a buzz of excitement in KS2 this
week! Everyone talking about costumes,
scenery, make up, props, singing, acting, dancing,
sound, lighting! What could it all be about? What
was happening?
Yes! The Dracula Rock Show was ready and on
stage for a magnificent performance on Thursday
afternoon. After all the hard work, the performance day had finally
arrived and what a wonderful show it was. Every student in KS2
took part either onstage, backstage, or as a member of a rather
remarkable student rock band! The auditorium rocked as the story
of Dracula and his party of Zombies and Vampires returned to Xuan Dieu, after living in the underworld for many
years, to join forces with the villain Moriarty. Luckily Detective Shirley Holmes and Dr Watson were on hand to
reform our likeable criminals and peace was restored once more to Tay Ho.
Congratulations to all the children in KS2 and to all the teachers and TAs who worked so hard to make the KS2
