This document provides guidance for evaluating privileged access management solutions. It outlines best practices for constructing a lab environment to test features like replication across multiple nodes, automatic discovery and classification of managed systems, and traversing firewalls. The evaluation should focus on advanced elements like fault tolerance, scalability, workflows and the technical capabilities of the solution.
This webinar describes how you can manage the risk of privileged accounts being compromised, creating a breach of sensitive data or other assets in your organization, through privileged access management, or PAM. PAM can reduce risks by hardening your environment in ways no other solution can, but is challenging to deploy. This webinar provides an unbiased perspective on PAM capabilities, lessons learned and deployment challenges, distilling the good practices you need to be successful. It covers:
- PAM definitions, core features and specific security and compliance drivers
- The PAM market landscape and major vendors
- How to integrate PAM with identity management, service ticketing and monitoring
- Avoiding availability and performance issues

Secure by Design - Security Design Principles for the Rest of UsEoin Woods
Security is an ever more important topic for system designers. As our world becomes digital, today’s safely-hidden back office system is tomorrow’s public API, open to anyone on the Internet with a hacking tool and time on their hands. So the days of hoping that security is someone else’s problem are over.
The security community has developed a well understood set of principles used to build systems that are secure (or at least securable) by design, but this topic often isn’t included in the training of software developers, assuming that it’s only relevant to security specialists.
In this talk, we will briefly discuss why security needs to be addressed as part of architecture work and then introduce a set of proven principles for the architecture of secure systems, explaining each in the context of mainstream system design, rather than in the specialised language of security engineering.
This version of the talk was presented at GOTO London in October 2016.

BsidesSP: Pentesting in SDN - Owning the ControllersRoberto Soares
Conference:
BsidesSP
Description:
SDN (Software Defined Network) has attracted the attention of many technology giants from various segments such as VMware, Juniper, Cisco, HP, IBM, Google, China Telecom, Huawei and others by providing more virtualized services that can be scheduled, managed and monitored faster, more efficient and in a less costly manner than the usual solutions. Defining routes, switching, QoS treatment and security policies that happened in stocky and specific hardware now has performed his duties in higher layers of software, installed on virtualized machine. But how can we test this? First, we'll address an overview of the SDN architecture, soon after, it will be explained how to find SDN controllers, and if present in our network, steal critical information so that we can proceed with our exploitation. In the end, we will take possession of the controllers and make unexpected. There will be a smattering of codes for metasploit that will be demonstrated. Does a controller can control us? We'll see.

Software functional testing can unveil a wide range of potential malfunctions in applications. However, there is a significant fraction of errors that will be hardly detected through a traditional testing process. Problems such as memory corruptions, memory leaks, performance bottlenecks, low-level system call failures and I/O errors might not surface any symptoms in a tester’s machine while causing disasters in production. On the other hand, many handy tools have been emerging in all popular platforms allowing a tester or an analyst to monitor the behavior of an application with respect to these dark areas in order to identify potential fatal problems that would go unnoticed otherwise. Unfortunately, these tools are not yet in widespread use due to few reasons. First, the usage of tools requires a certain amount of expertise on system internals. Furthermore, these monitoring tools generate a vast amount of data even with elegant filtering and thereby demand a significant amount of time for an analysis even from experts. As the end result, using monitoring tools to improve software quality becomes a costly operation. Another facet of this problem is the lack of infrastructure to automate recurring analysis patterns.
This paper describes the current state of an ongoing research in developing a framework that automates a significant part of the process of monitoring various quality aspects of a software application with the utilization of tools and deriving conclusions based on results. According to our knowledge this is the first framework to do this. It formulates infrastructure for analysts to extract relevant data from monitoring tool logs, process those data, make inferences and present analysis results to a wide range of stakeholders in a project.
Popeye - Using Fine-grained Network Access Control to Support Mobile Users an...Tal Lavian Ph.D.
We are facing a trend towards ubiquitous connectivity where users demand access at anytime, anywhere. This has lead to the deployment of public network ports and wireless networks. Current solutions to network access control are in exible and only provide all-or-nothing access. It is also increasing important to protect Intranet hosts from other mobile and static hosts on the same
Intranet, in order to contain damages in the case that a host gets compromised. We present an architecture that addresses these issues by using a programmable router to provide dynamic
ne-grained network access control. The Javaenabled router dynamically generates and enforces
access control rules using policies and user proles as input, reducing administrative overhead. Our modular design integrates well with existing authentication and directory servers, further reducing admininstrative costs. Our prototype is implemented using Nortel's Accelar router and moves users to VLANs with the appropriate access privilege.
Software Defined Networking is seeing a lot of momentum these days. With server virtualization solving the virtual machines problem, and large scale object storage solving the distributed storage challenge, SDN is seen as key in virtual networking.
In this talk we don't try to define SDN but rather dive straight into what in our opinion is the core enabled of SDN: the virtual switch OVS.
OVS can help manage VLAN for guest network isolation, it can re-route any traffic at L2-L4 by keeping forwarding tables controlled by a remote controller (Openfow controller). We show these few OVS capabilities and highlight how they are used in CloudStack and Xen.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

20. Hitachi ID Privileged Access Manager Product Evaluation Guidelines
A Why Replication Across Cities is Mandatory
If replication across multiple vaults, each in a different city, seems extreme, consider a recent history of
disasters and what would have happened to a global organization that had a data center containing their
sole password vault in an affected area. The human toll of each event is major, but in the following we focus
on the physical effects:
1. 1995: Kobe earthquake – destroys thousands of buildings in Kobe, Japan.
2. 2003: Northeast blackout – power lost in much of Eastern and Midwest US and Canada for up to 24
hours in some areas. Telecommunications and other infrastructure disrupted.
3. 2004: Indonesian tsunami – destroys towns and villages on Indonesian, Thai, Indian and other coast-
lines.
4. 2005: Hurricane Katrina – knocked out much of Louisiana and Mississippi.
5. 2008: Major earthquake in Szechuan – knocked out major infrastructure in Chengdu (a city of tens of
millions).
6. 2010: Haiti earthquake – destroyed much of Port-au-prince and the country’s infrastructure.
7. 2011: Tohoku earthquake and subsequent meltdown at the Fukushima power plant – physically de-
stroyed and made uninhabitable a large area in Northeast Japan.
8. 2011: New Zealand earthquake damages much of Christchurch.
The point here is that major natural and man-made disasters happen somewhere in the world with some
frequency and cannot be safely ignored as “infrequent” or “only happens somewhere else.” A robust system
must be built with the assumption that a single data center may be destroyed or at least disconnected from
power and/or telecommunications for at least a few hours and perhaps permanently.
