- 2. Front Cover… Firstly, Iopened up Photoshop. I opened a new document and inserted the picture that I wanted to use for my main image. I learnt a skill here, that the paper settings had to be international paper when you make a new document so that it is the right size. I had to ask my teacher about this to find it out. This image follows conventions because it uses a white background and I wanted to represent my genre with the clothes and by using a female to show who the target audience were. I also changed the brightness of the image as you can see, it is looking abit dull at the moment.
- 3. Then, I addedthese purple rectangles next, using the rectangle tool. I then used the ‘FX’ button and selected ‘Blending’ to make it slightly transparent so that the writing could stand out on them. This was a skill that I learnt because I did not know how to do this before.
- 4. After this, Iadded text to the boarders using the ‘T’ tool at the side and I changed the font to ‘Raavi’. I did this because I learnt from my previous task that the front cover had to contain a strapline. So, I chose to do one at the top and one at the bottom so that there was more text to intrigue the audience.
- 5. I then insertedmy masthead. I did this by choosing the appropriate font from the drop down menu. I chose to use Showcard Gothic because this font is bold and stands out on the page. I then enlarged the font as I learnt from the previous tasks that the masthead had to be the biggest text on the page. I used the colour pink because I believed that this best matched the genre of my magazine. (Pop) and also would appeal to the young females. Finally, I added a purple/pink bubble from google images. I saved this image and then dragged it from the folder onto the page and resized it to fit with the masthead. I then used the blending option to make the bubble less opaque so that the masthead still stood out on the page.
- 6. Then, I addedthe main coverline. I added two different text boxes. I enlarged the name of the model ‘Kiera Madden’ as I thought that this was most relevant. I then added the 2nd part of the main cover line ‘My rise to fame’- clearly representing that these two are related. I changed the models name to pink to make it stand out and the 2nd part to white. I then used the ‘FX’ button and blending option and used the stroke option to add a black stroke. This made my text stand out to ensure that this is what the target audience will look at first when they pick up my magazine.
- 7. Then, I includedthe smaller cover lines on the left side of the page. I did this because in a previous task, I learnt that cover lines should go on the left side of the page as other magazines cover the right side of the page when they’re on the shelf. I made them different colours so that each line stood out. I also used various styles; such as bold and italic. I then added a stroke- the colour black to make sure that they were noticeable on the page.
- 8. I then addedsmaller cover lines with shapes around them. I got these shapes off google images and added text to them using the ‘T’ tool. I added a thick black stroke at ’6pt’ to these cover lines. These shapes make the page look more visually appealing and add a sense of fun to the magazine, as it is targeted at the younger members of the audience.
- 9. Then, I addedthis ‘peeled sticker’ to the front cover from google images. I added ‘Issue 1’ on it using the text tool. This clearly indicates to the target audience that this is a new magazine and therefore, this matches the codes and conventions of a typical magazine. I added a barcode with the price, which follows the codes and conventions of any typical magazine which I learnt from previous tasks. This is an important part of the magazine as this is what lets the target audience actually buy the magazine.
- 10. Contents Page… Firstly, Iadded these two boarders. This was because I used them for the front cover so to make the magazine consistent, I used them for my contents page also. I did this by using the rectangle tool to create the shapes. I then changed the colour to purple as this is my colour scheme (pink and purple). I did this by selecting the colour swatch and using the tool on there to replicate the colour from my front cover page, this was a skill that I learnt. I then added text with page numbers underneath on the left boarder, this was so that the target audience could see everything included within the magazine. I used a stroke on the text using the blending option on the ‘FX’ button to make the text stand out and I used the shape button to add circles under the page numbers, to make them stand out also. I then added contact details to the boarder at the bottom with icons (from google images and then I dragged them from my folder) that are relevant to the text and websites. I had to use the multiply button on the ‘FX’ icon to make the white background disappear, this was another skill that I had learnt.
- 11. I then addedthe masthead and positioned it at the top left of the page. I did this by dragging the front cover over onto the contents page and dragging the masthead from the front cover to contents page to copy and paste it over. This was also a skill that I learnt and I had to ask the person next to me on how to do this. I copied and pasted it because I learnt from previous tasks that the masthead had to be included on the contents page and that it had to be the same as on the front cover so I wanted to get it right.
- 12. I then addedthis title ‘Contents’. I did this by using the ‘T’ text tool and enlarging the text. I then added a black stroke to the text to make it stand out. I added this to the page because this is a typical code and convention of any magazine, not just music magazines. This clearly indicates to the target audience that this page is the contents page. This is the biggest text on the page., highlighting that it is the most important on this page. This is the same on my contents page draft, but on my draft it is slightly bigger. This shows that I have challenged codes and conventions because on some magazines that I have researched, this title is bigger than what I have chosen to do. I also changed the colour to pink to appeal to my target audience of females as this is stereotypically their favourite colour. I then added a date to the magazine to show the target audience that it has just been previously published and so that they know that it is relevant. This is a typical code and convention of any magazine. I did this by using the text tool and making it smaller as this is one of the less significant objects on the page.
- 13. After that, Iadded an editorial. I did this by searching on google images, ‘lined piece of paper’. I then saved the image and dragged it from my folder onto the page. I then added text and changed the font to a handwriting font called ‘Lucia Handwriting’. This added a special effect to my magazine as it made it look like it was hand written. I also made the text colloquial to appeal to the younger audience. I learnt from my previous research that editorials are important as it makes the reader feel more intrigued and that the magazine is aimed at them.
- 14. Then, I addedthe relevant pictures. I did this by taking them myself with a camera. I then uploaded the pictures using a USB and dragged them from my folder and onto the page. I made the picture of a band the largest, highlighting that this is the main image on the page. I then made the other images smaller.
- 15. I then addedthe relevant text to go with the pictures. I made a speech bubble for the image of a band to make the magazine seem more realistic. I did this by saving an image from google images. I then changed the colour of the image and dragged it on the layers and put it on top of the picture so that it could be seen. This was a skill that I learnt. I made the text bold and added a stroke to the pink text to make it stand out more. The page numbers with the circles around them shows the target audience where they can find more information to do with the images.

- 17. • Firstly, Iopened up InDesign, and I chose to do 3 grids on each page. I decided to do this because I found out from previous research, that a typical code and convention of a music magazine is to use the rule of thirds. I then used the rectangular box and stretched it so that it fitted the size of the left side of the DPS. I then selected ‘Place’ from the ‘File’ option and placed the image so that it fitted the whole of the page. This was a skill that I had to learn. I found out from recent research that usually, on a pop magazine, they use the whole of one side just for an image. However, in my draft, I added supplement images within the main image but I decided not to follow this because I felt like this was not needed.
- 18. Next, I addedmy masthead. I did this by dragging it from my contents page and onto the page. I positioned it in the right corner of the page as on this page, it is less significant. This is what I had learnt from my previous research.
- 19. Then, I addedthe main heading, ‘Kiera Madden- My life so far’. I did this by using the text tool ‘T’ and then I changed the colour and added a stroke to match the main cover line on the front page so that my magazine is consistent. I decided to place it over both of the pages so that it showed that both pages linked together. I also did this on my DPS draft.
- 20. I then addedmy question and answer style article. I began by doing this as a rough copy on word document. Once finished, I added it to the article within the three vertical grids. I changed the questions to pink and left the answers as black. This made the questions stand out more. Then I added a grab quote between the bodies of text and changed the colour to purple so that it would attract the audiences’ eye. This was all basic so I did not seek help to do this.
- 21. Then, I addeda drop cap. I did this by highlighting the letter ‘A’ and increasing the number of lines to 3 and the number of characters to 2. I found out that this was a typical code and convention from my previous research so I decided to add it in too. I also pointed this out in my DPS drawn draft. I also added a ‘By Emma Grimes’ quote at the top of the article, this is also a typical code and convention of a typical DPS of a magazine.
- 22. I finally addedthe relevant page numbers to the page by using the text tool and making it a small text and then I positioned them at the corners of the page.
