The student evaluated their magazine project. For the front cover, they felt the color scheme and layout were good but could have added more text. For the double page spread, they were pleased with the text and layout but could have incorporated more color. Regarding the website, they thought the assets and color range were good but the homepage could have included more content.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. Glamour magazine published:
October 14th 2017
In this front cover the designer has used bold colors in the text to
make them stand out and bounce off the page. It also includes a soft
tone of background. Using a soft colored background makes the text
colors stand out eve more as if the background was also a bold
color, the text would blend in with it.
The words used on the page are used to attract young adults and
teenagers as they use words such as "bad ass" and include names of
celebrities that young adults will recognize. With the text, it is
indirect and informal. They also use bold fonts to make the text
stand out on the page
The photography is the central asset of the cover as it takes up most
of the space and is ne of the first things you see. This picture is one
of a popular celebrity which attracts the audience. In this ratio of
text and pictures, there is more text than pictures but the picture in
this cover takes up most of the layout.
3. GLAMOUR MAGAZINE PUBLISHED:
OCTOBER 14TH 2017
The colors of this spread are pretty basic as it includes
whites and blacks. The benefit of this is that the audience
would not like so many colors on the page because it
would be too distracting.
Like the front cover, the text in this spread are words to
attract young adults and teenagers as it is talking about
subjects such as relationships. he text is a basic font so it
is readable for the audience. The way it is addressed to
the audience is that is direct because it uses words such
as "you" and "us". It also has a formal style
The photography on this page is the central asset as it
takes up most of the space. The image goes with the
subject of the spread as it shows a couple together. In
this ratio this is more text than images however the
image is clearly one of the main assets as it takes up
more space than the text. T
4. GLAMOUR MAGAZINE website
The creator of the website has used basic
colors such as black and white so that (color
wise) the website does not look crowded
and is easy to the eye for the audience.
This specific article is aimed at a young
adult/teenage audience as it uses slogan
such as "new hair, who dis?" Which young
people will recognize and find relatable or
funny. Looking at the whole article, the text
picture ratio shows that there is a fair
balance of text and images. The fonts shown
on this website are simplistic and easy to
read. The subtitle is in a bolder font in order
for it to stand out on the page. The address
is indirect and informal.
5. Elle magazine published:
October 21st 2017The color scheme of this magazine cover is different to the previous
front cover. Glamour magazine used bold colors whereas Elle
magazine has used basic colors such as black, grey and white and
has also used a pink font to make that piece of text stand out from
the other pieces of text.
unlike glamour magazine, this magazines cover doesn't use a lot of
words to attract a specific audience. The words used are names of
famous celebrities in which some are those who may not be
recognized by younger viewers. The fonts used are bold to stand
out on the page so the audience is tempted to buy the product or
at least have a look inside the magazine. The address of the text is
indirect and a mixture of formal and informal.
The photo is used as the key asset in this cover as it is the first thing
that the audience sees when they pick up the product. This photo
may attract the reader as the woman in the photo is a very famous
actress known for playing in a lot of well known films. As a text
picture ratio there is a bigger amount of text than images however
the image is at a big scale on the page so the audience will be more
intrigued in the image first than the text.
6. ELLE MAGAZINE PUBLISHED:
OCTOBER 21ST 2017Similar to glamour magazine, this magazines double page spreads
color scheme is pretty basic as it mainly consists of black and
white for simplicity and easy reading.
The type of writing in this spread is used to attract the audience is
set for a more mature audience as it talks about subjects like
gender and race in a working environment. Similar to glamour
magazines double page spread, this magazines font style is basic
and readable so the reader doesn't struggle when reading the
text. The way the article is addressed is indirect as the writer has
used words like "I" and other peoples names and doesn't address
the reader personally. The magazine spread is also formal because
there I no sign of slang words and doesn't seem like this story
would come up in regular conversation but would come up in a
news story for instance or as well a magazine/newspaper article.
The photography in this is pretty simple as it consists of authors of
the article. Compared to glamour magazines image they both
have relation to their article but differ in who is in the pictures as
glamour magazines picture is of a couple where as Elle magazines
is of the authors. For this ratio of text and images there is clearly a
bigger ratio of text than pictures. This may harm the design as
some audiences may not want to read a lot of text for a long
period of time. However it also could help the magazine as some
people might find the article and the magazine interesting and
want to continue reading the article.
7. ELLE MAGAZINE website
Compared to Glamour Magazine, there are a
lot of similarities. For example the color
schemes are identical with a simplistic black
and white form with color coming from the
images and for this website, the
advertisements. Looking at the text, however,
there are differences. With this magazine the
creator has gone for a elegant look when
choosing the font and has gone with a small-
medium sized text whereas Glamour
magazine has gone for big and bold texts to
attract more attention for the reader. This
article is aimed for teenagers as the page talks
about social media trends which most
teenagers are interested in just like the
previous magazine. It looks like the picture-
text ratio is even as it includes pictures and
text. The address in this article is informal just
like the previous website

9. Proposal
For my project I have decided to do a fashion and beauty magazine and website. I have decided to call my
magazine 'Jane Magazine'. My audience is teenagers and young adults. Preferably women but an be aimed
at men as well. There is no specific social status for this magazine. This magazine will not have any specific
opinions on any religious belief, traits, personality or opinion so that the magazine can include everyone no
matter what their psychographics are.
What I learned on the previous project is that I need to make a wider range of ideas for the project as in the
previous project I only stuck with one and when that went wrong and wasn't able to happen, I was stuck on
what to do. I also need to work on my time management and not get distracted as much in order do get the
work done to the best I can do and in time. At the end of my previous project I realized I could of added
more assets to my work so it would look more finished and clean.
In order to get a good teen magazine I will have to do a lot of research. I need to understand what teenage
girls are into in the modern day and what interests them. If I create an article which is more aimed at an
older or younger age range, teenagers may not be interested and not want to purchase the magazine.
In order to evaluate my project at the end of the project, I will have to compare my work to pre existing
magazines and websites and also compare it to my original plans as I may have changed some assets in the
magazine. Comparing my magzine

18. Front cover
COMPARED TO A PRE EXISTING MAGAZINE FRONT COVER WHICH WAS THE SOLE INSPIRATION FOR MY
MAGAZINE, MY FRONT COVER HAS SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES TO IT. ONE OF THE SIMILARITIES IS THE
COLOR SCHEME. IN THE PRE EXISTING MAGAZINE THEY HAVE USED A PALE PASTEL TO DARK GRADIENT AS THE
BACKGROUND AND HAS USED THE COLORS ON THE MODEL AS THE TEXT COLORS SO THEY CAN MATCH. MY
MAGAZINE FRONT COVER HAS A BLUE TO WHITE GRADIENT BACKGROUND AND I HAVE ALSO MATCHED THE
COLORS OF THE MODEL AND BACKGROUND TO THE COVER LINE AND TITLE.
LOOKING AT THE TEXT RATIO OF THE PRE EXISTING MAGAZINE AND MY MAGAZINE, IT IS CLEAR TO SEE THAT
THE PRE EXISTING MAGAZINE HAS A BIGGER PROPORTION. WHEN LOOKING AT THE FRONT COVERS SIDE TO
SIDE, MY FRONT COVER LOOKS UNFINISHED AS THERE IS WAY LESS COVER LINES THAN THE PRE EXISTING
FRONT COVER.
ANOTHER SIMILARITY I HAVE SPOTTED BETWEEN THE TWO IS THAT THE USE OF THE IMAGE. IN BOTH COVERS,
THE IMAGE OF THE MODEL HAS BEEN CUT AROUND THE HEAD SO IT WILL LAYER OVER THE TITLE OF THE
MAGAZINE. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE I CAN SPOT IS THAT THE PRE EXISTING MODELS CUTOUT HAS BEEN
SOFTENED SO IT DOESN’T LOOK AS MANUFACTURED UNLIKE MINE WHICH IS KIND OF OBVIOUS THAT THE
IMAGE HAS BEEN CUT OUT AND PLACED INTO PLACE.
EVEN THOUGH THE TWO COVERS HAVE USED DIFFERENT FONTS, THE STYLE OF FONTS ARE PRETTY SIMILAR.
BOTH MAGAZINES HAVE USED A BOLD STYLE IN ORDER FOR THE TEXT TO STAND OUT ON THE PAGE.
COMPARING THE FRONT COVER TO MY ORIGINAL PLANS I PRETTY MUCH STUCK TO IT. IN MY MIND MAP I
SUGGESTED THAT THE HEADLINES WOULD GO AROUND THE MODEL, THE IMAGE WOULD BE MY OWN
PHOTOGRAPHY AND THAT I SHOULD STICK TO THE COLOR SCHEME WHICH WAS A RANGE OF BLUES, PURPLES,
BLACK AND WHITE. ALTHOUGH I HAVEN'T ADDED ALL THE COLORS IN MY COLOR SCHEME I HAVE STUCK TO
THE SCHEME. THE IMAGE OF THE MODEL IS MY OWN PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE HEADLINES GO AROUND THE
MODEL. HOWEVER, I COULD OF ADDED MORE COLOR TO THE PAGE, I COULD OF ADDED MORE HEADLINES TO
MAKE IT LOOK LESS UNFINISHED AND I COULD OF IMPROVED THE QUALITY F THE IMAGE.
19. Double page spread
Compared to the pre existing double page spread, my pages layout is quite different. In the pre existing
product, the image is taking up most of the space and the text laid out around the image whereas mine has
a bigger text ratio to images.
Even though my double page spread has a bigger number ratio of images than the pre existing, my size ratio
is different to the existing product. In my double page spread main focus is the text and the images are
much smaller so they don’t take up much space on the page therefore is not the main focus of the page
whereas on the pre existing double page spread, the image is much bigger than the text in order for the
image to be the highlight of the page.
One of the main similarities between the pre existing product and my product is that they both have similar
colour schemes and text styles. In both spreads, the colour scheme is really stuck to black and white with
hints of colour sourced from the images. The text style is also similar with the paragraph starting off with a
bigger letter but the pre existing pages text is a smaller font size and has a smaller gap between the lines
unlike mine
Looking at my double page spread and the layout plan I did for it, I pretty much stuck to what I was
originally going to do with a few minor changes. For example at the bottom of the left page, I was originally
going to have two images but only went with one because I realised that it might of looked crowded at the
bottom of the page. I also changed the image on the bottom of the right page to a list of products that were
featured on the page and how much you could buy them for.
Looking at the style sheet from before I have seen that I have made a few changes on the page from what I
was originally going to use. For example I only used half of the colours I was going to use and only stuck
with a basic black and white colour scheme. I also didn’t use much of the fonts I was going to use for texts
because I found better fonts on InDesign.
20. website
Comparing the pre existing website and my website, there are some similarities.
For example the colour scheme on both mine and the pre exiting websites is quite
basic with the black and white form.
The layout, however, Is different between the two websites. For example, the
navigation bar is laced differently and social media links are shown at the top of
the page in the pre existing website whereas min is displayed at the bottom.
Comparing text in both websites there are less similarities than differences. My
website has more text and bigger font sizes unlike the pre existing website which
has little to no text with a smaller size range of the text.
Compared to my original plan I have changed a few things such as the contact us
page which does no longer exist, I have changed what was going to be on the main
page and the gallery is placed on the home page instead of being on a separate
page.
21. Evaluation
Front cover:
For my front cover I did well in colour schemes and layout. However I could of added more
text onto the page because it looks a bit unfinished because there's a small range of
headlines.
Double page spread:
With my double page spread I worked well with text and layout. I could of added more colour
the pages because the page has a simplistic colour scheme with colour only coming from the
images.
Website:
For the website I feel like I have added good assets and have a range of colours. However, the
homepage is very short and could of added more assets to the page.
