Purpose and Learning Objectives
In this assignment, you should practice writing using the writing process and developing a well-constructed analysis essay in formal register. The essay should show how an analysis of the visual components of an image leads to a better understanding of the image.
Process for Completion
The first step in this process will be to choose an image. Browse the images available through the Gordon Parks Foundation Archives. The link is available near the end of Unit 3. Choose an image that you find engaging and that you feel offers ample opportunity for analysis. Some images are interesting, but they’re difficult to talk about. The image you choose will be the subject of your essay.
After you have chosen your image, you should engage in some prewriting activities using the ideas and terms presented in Unit 4. First, take stock of your initial reactions to the image. What emotions did you feel as you first looked at the photograph? What aspects about the image lead viewers to react a certain way?
Before you begin writing, you will want to perform some research. This assignment requires at least one source (print or web). If you're choosing an image about the Civil Rights Movement, you might want to research the movement. If you're choosing an image about Flavio in Rio de Janeiro, you might want to research how Gordon Parks met Flavio. You're welcome to use more than one source, but be sure to keep track of the information you gain from your source so that you can cite the source appropriately.
Next, analyze the image by looking closely at the content, framing, composition, focus, color, lighting and context. What interesting or unique features do you notice about the image? What is the cultural or historical context of the image? You should record all of these activities. Some of them will become important pieces of your final draft.
Next, it will be time to find your focus and begin generating a working thesis statement. For this assignment, your thesis will make a claim about the
meaning
of the image. In other words, what message does the image communicate? Remember, every image tells a story and an image may tell a different story depending on who is looking. Once you have decided what idea or story the image communicates to you, you will need to explain how content, framing, focus, color, angle and lighting come together to create that story or convey meaning. Your thesis will be more specific if you show which visual elements your essay discusses and what they do to create meaning. So, an example thesis might be something like this: “Through content, framing, and angle, the image demonstrates how segregation affected not only adults but also the children of black families in the South.”

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Existing Product
The type of content that is used is a mixture between articles, which are being used to provide the
information about the product. Drawings, used to show something in a more creative way or to
show something which wouldn’t of been able to have a picture taken of it. And finally,
photography to show details that some drawings couldn’t provide. These three elements come
together to form an interesting page with information about the topic. Having the mixture
between drawing and photo gives a variety to the audience making it less bland.
Design
The colour scheme used for the background is a light peach, Which is colour that is easy on the
eyes. There might not be a reason behind the colour selection but it makes the fanzine better to
read unlike black on white. The images used for the fanzine are either hand drawn to show
something that wouldn’t be able to be photographed or a photo of a cat to show difference
between breeds. The text to image ratio is good since you’re not overwhelmed by either or. As
well, the font choice is easy to read unlike quite a few fonts out the there.
Context
The subject that the fanzine covers is the topic of cats, this includes history, breeds, and facts
about them. The writing style used within can be viewed as simple and just spouting facts onto a
page. But looking closer you can see the passion the person has on the topic, they want you to
know about these marvelous creatures which they’re so fascinated about. This can also be linked
to the mode of address of it, as it gives heart breaking facts as if shouting to the audience that they
should help. It was a student who made this fanzine which means they’d of had access to modern
technology and would also have access to all the information they needed in the world with
google.
5. Existing Product
The type of content that this fanzine contains is a mixture between drawings and reviews. The
drawings are from the show and are there to show you who they’re reviewing at the time, it
also shows the detail in the characters. The review has facts based on the characters with some
opinions mixed in they also quote the characters.
Design
The colour scheme of each page changes to match the character it’s describing. For example the
double page I scanned uses an image of the calm area that their home is located with the house
in the background. Other images are mainly the characters in their own setting. The text to
picture ratio in this fanzine is very balanced as they have one quite large character image with
the txt surrounding them. As well as the background which is each ones home.
Context
The subject that this person has used is the cartoon adventure time, in which they’ve described
each character, their home, and some information about their life and lifestyle. Their writing
style has a lot of love behind it, not wanting to miss any information about that character.
They’ve included quotes so the reader can understand the love that they have. This links to the
mode of address as they’re involving the show into the piece giving the reader more of a push
to look more into it. The creator was a student similar to the cats product. This also means they
would have had access to the internet and the information that it holds. Additionally some
shows have scripts on the internet to make quoting them a lot simpler.
7. Existing Product
The type of context that this fanzine uses is a mixture of articles and reviews with artwork from
different anime. The mixture of articles and reviews gives the fanzine a lot more variety in it’s
facts and makes it more appealing to read. As well as putting art in of the subject making the
words link to the image.
Design
The colour scheme in the fanzine are all very different some are vibrant colours which splash out
the page whilst some are more dull. This represents the variety there is in anime. All the images
are used from specific anime and are either cropped or have their full image. There is some
photography thought of irl figures which are spoken about within. The text to image ratio in this
fanzine seems to be not as even as the other two being more images to text. The fronts used for
the text is easy to read though.
Context
The subject that the fanzine is covering is about anime. The writing style used seem to be more
like a review and what it’s like experiencing different anime. They have some facts in there but is
focused on their opinion of the anime and if they’re worth watching. The mode of address used
is mainly them guiding you to anime they believe to be better and influencing your selection.
The creator of this fanzine seems to have a very strong opinion of anime and the making behind
it making them sound very experienced, unlike the other two which were students this is more
from a professional. The technology they could use would be all up to date but unlike the
students they might not have as many resources available to them.
8. Research summary
• What I’ve learnt from the fanzines is that it’s important to
keep the facts entertaining by either adding little bits from the
subject in or by adding images that relate to the subject.
• Additionally, the front cover doesn’t need to be overly
complicated and can just be an image with a title and as small
overview of what’s inside or can be similar to a normal
magazine having information about the inside on the cover.

19. Pagination:
A plan for the pages of your book. What will be the cover? What will be the running order? What will go in it? How many
pages for each item? This is important to get right if you want it to print correctly later on. It will also help you plan the space
you have.

21. Production schedule:
You have 2 weeks to generate content and 3 weeks to produce your book along with any improvements. You need to plan
this. What will you be doing each week? How long should you spend on each task? How will you know if you are head or
behind schedule?
23. Interview:
You should document the process of getting your interview. You should produce a range of questions and also a list of
interviewees.
You should provide an unedited transcript of the interview as well as at least one draft of it.
Interviews can be written in whatever style you prefer.
27. Copy:
All the other written elements of your fanzine are up to you but should be documented here. If you decide to write a
review, a polemic, an article or anything else, it needs to be documented here.
Drafts are good so it is worth writing a first draft then producing a second which not only checks for spelling and grammar
errors but also ensures that your work has a consistent style, quality and structure.
Recording your research, as and when it happens, is also a very strong idea. If you need to look up a fact or read an
article, record that.
Editor's Notes
Look at different types of content, design elements, the subject and context.
Type of content- studio/location photography, articles, reviews, adverts, sketches, drawings and other artwork
Design – colour schemes, photography and images, text/picture ratio, font choices
Subject and context – What subject(s) is the fanzine covering? What is the writing style? What is the mode of address? In what context was the fanzine produced? Context is the environment in which something was produced. Think about the time this was made.

You don’t need to find links between different fanzines because, often there are not any.
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
