How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary text?
As part of my A2 media studies coursework my group
and I were required to create a music video, to go
with the ancillary task of making a CD cover and
billboard to advertise the music video. R&b was the
genre I chose to create the video, I researched up on
conventions and unique selling points in order for it to
be a success.
Album cover
After researching and annotating a real life cd cover
the purpose of a cd cover became more clear to me,
the importance in how appealing it is to an audience
where everything is places and why it was placed in
those certain areas. This helped me get a clearer
image of how I wanted my album cover to look.
Aspect such as colour of the image, how background
colour makes the main image more eye catching,
also I learnt how the font combines with the main
image to make it a better selling point.
I analysed two different album cover the format
colour used were both very different, from my
research I gathered that the image at the front not
only promotes the artist but has lot to do with the
artist being a fashion icon and selling there individual
style to there fans. Body language was another key
selling point as it tells you not only about the artist but
what the songs will be like inside already without even
reading the album cover. This is important because I
saw many albums don’t even have the name of the
song instead just have there own name.

I also looked at magazine advertisement, how artist
promote there albums , each artist has a different way
of promoting themselves I looked at magazine
advertisement. As my main artist was a female I
looked at how popular artist sell them self, I saw that it
has a lot to do with how the artist portrays them self
mise-en-scen, lighting, camera work all combined
together help promote each artist differently as each
artist is different and have different ways they want to
represent themselves.
From my research there was different aspects I liked in
different adverts. The tittle of the song has a lot to do
with the image that will be conveyed by the artist for
example love songs are represented with gentle fonts
light colours where the artist wears colours such as
red. Also in the magazine advertisement its self some
artist use the same picture however some don’t.

Conclusion
Overall the ancillary task helped me get a
background imagine on what to do in order for a
music video to sell, it gave me an acknowledgment
that a lot more work goes into promoting the artist
and how important it is. My ancillary task helps
promote my products as features such as having the
main artist be the cover of the album and magazine
advert help to promote the single.
