Why Are Value Investors Successful
Value investing is the strategy of purchasing an asset which is trading at a significant discount from its
determined intrinsic value. It has long been regarded as a low risk method of providing outstanding
investment returns (Klarman 2001). The investment strategy was described by Benjamin Graham and
David Dodd in their book, Security Analysis (1940, p. 724). Over subsequent decades the investment
approach has evolved utilizing varying fundamental methodologies but always maintaining the
principle of investing when a discount to intrinsic value exists. Graham and Dodd (1940, p. 368)
referred to this principle as the margin of safety . This essay will explore the various methodologies,
expand on the margin of safety concept and discover ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Focussing on portfolio returns over time horizons of up to 5 years, the researchers offered strong
empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the low P/BV strategy. Specifically average annual returns
of 19.8% were reported. They were also able to surmise that there is no support for the hypothesis that
value strategies are fundamentally riskier. Piotroski (2000) expanded on research into a low P/BV
strategy by only choosing financially strong firms using nine fundamental financial signals. This
refined investment strategy was shown to generate returns above value portfolios formed solely by the
low P/BV screening method. He then improved on this approach by demonstrating a strategy of short
selling the financially weaker low P/BV firms to produce over all returns of 23% per annum. Piotroski
also notes that initial signs of improvement in financial performance are at first ignored by market
participants, with share price reactions only occurring during subsequent positive quarterly earnings
announcements.
Investors and analysts have a tendency to rely too heavily on the record of past earnings growth (La
Porta et al. 1997). According to Lakonishok, Shleifer Vishny (1994) popular strategies like
extrapolating past earnings growth too far into the future or assuming a trend in stock prices ,
overreacting to good or bad news , or simply equating a good investment with a well run company

Autism Spectrum Disorder and Interventions
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that develops during a child s
first few years of life (Lesack, Bearss, Celano, Sharp, 2014). This disorder occurs significantly more
often in boys than girls (Goldstein, Naglieri, Rzepa, Williams, 2012). Autism is part of a group that is
known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which also includes Asperger s disorder, Rett
disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive development disorder not otherwise
specified (PDD NOS) (Sunita and Bilszta, 2012). Some characteristics children represent with autism
is the inability to make eye contact, to initiate and respond communication, and smile back at someone
else who is smiling at them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there was no evidence for those notions but parents still held on to the belief that the diet
and or vaccinations were responsible for causing autism. The reason for the idea of the measles and
mumps vaccination causing autism was that autism would develop in children around the same time
when the child would need to get the vaccination. This became suspicious to people. The reason for
the idea of the children s diet causing autism was that there were publications of a controversial article
stating that there was a link between enterogastric toxins appearing from eating foods that had gluten
in them and autism. With this idea too there was nothing proven that a gluten allergy and autism were
linked (Thompson, 2013). When children are able to receive early education that supports their
development there diagnostic symptoms are likely to decrease and even go away, permitting those
children who have autism to reach parallel developmental levels with other typically developing
children around the same age (Sari, 2014). There are multiple different programs and interventions a
child with autism can go through to help them succeed in life as best as they can as well as programs
and interventions the children s parents can participate in with the child. One intervention is applied
behavior analysis (ABA). The treatments that are in applied behavior analysis include Pivotal

Behavioral And Emotional Aspect Of Human Thinking
approach deals with the behavioral and emotional aspect of human thinking. Humans are complex
there is no single way to help them stop the behavior. REBT assumes a persons problems come from
their mistaken cognitions, which they have perceived. Which have lead to over or under reactions, this
behavior becomes habitual and the person creates a dysfunctional pattern. The pattern enables them to
continue to repeat the poor behavior, although they know it is unhealthly. In addition REBT, we label
our reactions either consciouly or unconsciouly, therefore if we feel depressed, anxious or fearful it is
because we have convinced ourselves and validate our emotional reaction. One major tenet of REBT
is external events do not determine a persons feelings, a persons individuals beliefs about the event
determine if the person has a problem or not. Thus, we are not upset about an event in our particular
life, what makes us upset is our interpretation of the event.
Intervention
The REBT framwork of Albert Ellis (1962) operates as one ot the most straightforward and well
known models for explaining the connection between events, thoughts, beliefs, cognitions, emotions,
and behaviors (Field, Beeson, Jones, 2015, p. 207)REBT has two competing models, one (classic)
assumes dysfuncational negative feeling (anxiety, depressed, anger), differ from corresponsing feeling

Consequences Of The Mark Of The Beast By Rudyard Kipling
Consequences
Rudyard Kipling was a very well known British writer. Born on December 30th, 1865 in Bombay,
India and died on January 18th, 1936 in London, England. He wrote short stories, novels, and poems
throughout his lifetime, some famous and some not. He won Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. The
short story, The Mark of the Beast, written by Rudyard Kipling uses conflict through the characters to
prove all choices have consequences.
Kipling s parents were John and Alice Kipling. Mr. Kipling was an artist as well as a teacher of
architectural sculpting. At age five, ... his parents sent him and his sister [Trix] to England, partly to
avoid health problems, but also so they could begin their schooling ( Rudyard Kipling ,

He has lost his speech and began howling, We could hear him moving about in his own room, but
there was no light there. Presently from this room came the long howl of a wolf (Kipling 5). When he
started howling Strickland s thoughts became a reality, so and the narrator came up with a plan to
capture the Silver Man. When they lured him, the leper halted in the front porch for a moment and we
jumped out on him with the sticks. He was wonderfully strong ... Strickland knocked his legs from
under him and I put my foot on his neck (Kipling 7). Fighting them at first, they drug him inside
where Fleete was, begging him to take away the curse. After torturing the Silver Man he defeatedly
took away the curse, we unstrapped the leper and told him to take away the evil spirit. He crawled to
the beast and laid his head upon the left breast. That was all. Then he fell face down and whined and
drawing in his breath as he did so (Kipling 7). Fleete went to sleep afterwards. Strickland went to the
priests to thank them for taking away the curse, but the priest had no idea what he was talking about.
Upon returning home, Strickland discovered Fleete does not even remember the incident itself, only
Strickland and the narrator remember. Fleete mocked the smell of dog and laughed about

The Importance Of Communication In Business Communication
In business communication is key. All successful relationships are built through communication, trust,
loyalty and respect are built through good communication. So, it is no surprise that the Administrative
Management Society found that 80% of managers rated communication as the most important skill of
perspective employees. Another study conducted by a college placement service found that hundreds
of college alumni believe that communication abilities were more important to their job success than
their actual majors. Most people tend to focus on the verbal portion of communication, often
forgetting about the non verbal portion. Research shows when non verbal cues contradict verbal ones,
people tend to believe the non verbal behavior especially when it comes to feelings and attitude. With
advancements in technology the world has become smaller which has increased the amount of cross
cultural communication, especially in business. Not all cultures have the same communication styles,
so it is imperative to understand cultural differences in order to have successful international
relationships. This memo will specifically focus on the differences and similarities in communication
styles, specifically non verbal, between the United States of America and Colombia.
Individualism vs. Collectivism
Colombia is a collectivist society, which tend to value loyalty and tradition. Collectivist societies also
value the group over the person. And have a harder time understanding and

Persuasion As A Political Leader
In today s society, we are easily influenced to think and act a certain way. For example, we are
influenced by the media to buy things and meet certain standards, however, we often don t protest or
question why. Through persuasion, one alters another s perspective on an event or occurrence and
because of this, people usually tend to accept what is being said or portrayed. According to Petty and
Cacioppo (1986), there are two routes to persuasion. When one tries to persuade another by being
more caring and have a good understanding of the message they are delivering, this is called the
central route to persuasion. The second route to persuasion is better known as the peripheral route to
persuasion. This occurs when the one being addressed simply agrees with what is being said based on
certain superficial cues rather than the actual message. Political persuasion methods are widely used,
especially in campaigns. As a political leader, one detains the ultimate power to influence the
population. Being a political leader, however, is never easy. Sometimes, one must make tough
decisions that many of the population might not agree on. For instance, if a person in power chose to
bomb a foreign country, this would create mayhem and thus his followers or just people in society
would start to doubt his decision and may lead to riots. This specific political leader must debate his
case and persuade the population that his decision was the right thing to do. In order to do so,

Difference Between Tyll And CALL
Students require a methodology different from the traditional lecture method in which the teacher is at
the center and dominates the session. Now learner centered and active participation is preferred to
traditional lecture method. The trend of learning language through computers allows this to the
students. This is what we call CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning). This paper addresses
CALL and Text book Assisted Language Learning. I have taken this as TALL. In these two major
terms CALL and TALL, I ve taken the two major areas for comparison. They are i. Role of Teachers
ii. Developing LSRW skills
1. Role of Teachers: Though CALL is learner centered, we can t eliminate teachers. The role of
teacher in CALL is essential as much as in TALL. More over teacher of CALL should be well enough

There has been some success in using CALL, in particular computer mediated communication, to help
speaking skills closely linked to communicative competence (ability to engage in meaningful
conversation in the target language) and provide controlled interactive speaking practice outside the
classroom. Using chat has been shown to help students routinize certain often used expressions to
promote the development of automatic structure that helps to develop speaking skills. This is true even
if the chat is purely textual. The use of videoconferencing gives not only immediacy when
communicating with a real person but also visual cues, such as facial expressions, making such
communication more authentic. Call is a diversion to the students. They have to learn themselves,
without the help of their teacher. But their power of concentration

The Vital Importance of Homework
Every prosperous person has attained their goals via this privileged activity which has been practised
for generations. Homework is beneficial for children of all ages; to learn new strategies and theories.
All schools give homework to enrich their students learning and to prepare them for their soon to be
successful futures. Vehemently, homework is an essential requirement for children, adolescents or
even adults! Generally speaking, according to research (Cooper, Robinson Patall, 2006), studies are
showing us that academic achievement is improved in children who partake in some after school work
at home. Homework familiarises new concepts and encourages students to strive for their highest. It
gives them a sense of responsibility as they need to organise their time to fit all activities. In that way
homework would only be a minor, every day routine. If students want to have a privileged lifestyle,
they need to do their homework. Having helpful homework here, is the key to victory, inviting us
through a door to various opportunities in life! The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
Essentially, homework is a beneficial component of life. Without it, there wouldn t be any jobs around
as we wouldn t be intelligent enough to pass the exams and courses needed to fill positions. Some
people may be innately gifted, but the aces who are hungry to succeed, will excel higher. Homework
is the fruit of education; we learn the methods at school and we revise and

Feminism And Psychoanalysis In The Turn Of The Screw
Throughout the semester we went over many different methodologies, but for this research paper I
have chosen to talk about these two methodologies feminism and psychoanalysis. The propose of this
paper is to provide an understanding of how feminism plays a role with psychoanalysis, how female
can use this theory as a get away from their responsibility as a female. Throughout the paper I will use
two secondary resources to explain the meaning of both theory and use examples from the text The
Turn of the Screw to provide information as to how these methodologies. As written in my feminism
paper Parker describes patriarchy as the cultural history and practice of centering on underestimating
women. (Parker,) As we also know the psychological theory plays a role in treating mental disorders.
To first understand psychoanalysis theory you first need to understand the different parts that also play
a role with this theory such as the meaning of the conscious, and the unconscious mind. Conscious
mind is aware of the present moment and this also makes up about 10% of our mind. As for
unconscious mind Freud supposed that unconscious forces were at play since patients consciously
wanted to change, which forces of which the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

told women they should only be able to take a female role, that they had no right, and they shouldn t
be treated equal. Living in their unconscious mind they are able to live the life they want without the

Young Goodman Brown Analysis
Hawthorne s story, Young Goodman Brown, appears to be a story about original sin with a lot of
symbolism tied in to make it an allegory. An allegory is a story that can be interpreted in different
ways to find the hidden meaning behind the symbolism in the story. The three things focused on
throughout the short story is Faith, the forest that Goodman Brown takes his journey through, and the
staff, which the old man who leads Goodman Brown on his way carries. The short story, Young
Goodman Brown, uses several symbols such as: Faith, the forest, and the staff to contribute
significantly to the allegory. Goodman Brown s wife, Faith, not only represents Goodman Brown s
wife but also his religious faith. This dual purpose of Faith only ... Show more content on

For example, Goodman Brown thought to himself as he left Faith behind, About to turn the corner by
the meeting house, he looked back and saw the head of Faith still peeping after him with a melancholy
hair in spite of the pink ribbons. (Young Goodman Brown). Then, later in the story, Hawthorne
reintroduces the ribbons when Goodman Brown is in the forest, struggling with his doubts about the
goodness in the people he knows (Themes, Motifs, and Symbols). Goodman Brown questions if
anyone he has always known even has the true virtues and morals he thought they did. So when the
pink ribbon flutters down from the sky, Goodman Brown perceives it as a sign that Faith has definitely
fallen into the realm of the devil (Themes, Motifs, and Symbols). In other words, Faith has shed this
sign of her purity and innocence (Themes, Motifs, and Symbols).
At the same time, Goodman s companion, who exhibits devilish qualities with his black snaked staff,
will not give up until the young Goodman Brown completes his journey into the woods (Themes,
Motifs, and Symbols). Each time that Goodman Brown doubts his beliefs; his companion offers him a
black staff to help him along the way (Themes, Motifs, and Symbols). In fact, it is the staff that keeps
Goodman Brown going. It s as if the staff provokes evil thoughts that are too powerful to be overcome

Information technology has undoubtedly become an indispensable part of our day to day lives. Both
the articles considered for analysis projects the role of IT, from being the back bone of commerce to
handling huge volumes of data, as being highly significant in the modern world. Even though both
Nicholas Carr and Erik Brynjolfsson are in agreement to the omnipresence of IT, their perception of
the future of IT differs vastly. I am in accordance with the school of thought put forth by Nicholas
Carr which believes that the strategic value of IT has reduced. For all the inventions that had

Most of the companies invest in new technologies when the existing versions can very well serve the
purpose. Hence emphasis should be given to effectively managing and maintaining the existing
technology rather than unnecessarily investing on more technology. IT can be replicated very easily
and is subject to rapid deflation making it a bad investment. It is always better to wait rather than rush
to buy a new technology since a better version is always available before the newly purchased one is
ready to use. Also it is very difficult to turn temporary technological advantages to enduring
positioning ones. Hence more emphasis should be given in fixing the vulnerabilities rather than
investing on a soon to be outdated technology. I agree with Carr that the companies in order to achieve
a better return should manage risks and costs meticulously rather than resorting to seeking aggressive
advantage. Also we have indeed spent much more than necessary on IT that the available technology
is much advanced than what is required in the most cases.
Brynjolfsson s four paradigms for innovation, i.e., measurement, experimentation, sharing and
replication, in my opinion, put forth a best practice that can be adopted to achieve innovation. This
model can be replicated by companies to achieve a desired effect. It has in turn been discussed by Carr
that a best practice can be

Social Media And Its Effects On Society Essay
Nations around the globe rely on all types of media to address the general population about occurring
events or incidents in the country. Countries such as America and China are well known for their
excessive use of the media to cover important and none important events around the nation. The
general public is affected by the media s control in many forms, which can include media marketing of
consumerism and social media. The Truman Show alludes the society in which compliance is forced,
due to the media s overwhelming control over the general public; and argues that there is no actual
media control can be broken free from, because it is a person s choice to seek their own path to
freedom. This theme is illustrated through the symbolism of the characters of Christof, Truman s Wife
Meryl, and Truman. The claim is supported by the articles that include, 13 ways of looking at The
Truman Show by Yacowar , Mapping the culture of control by Wise J. Macgregor, and The Staging of
real life by Kilborn . The central argument that, We accept the reality of the world with which we are
presented (Wise), is supported in Mapping the culture of control by Wise because the general public
want what everyone wants due to their need of fitting in with the so called social norm.
Christof s purpose is that of a symbolic character in which he supports the media s control over the
general public. In many parts throughout the film Christof displays himself as overpowering and

The First Crusades During The Crusades
Jeet Kothari
Mr. Turner
Honors British Literature A
29 January 2016
The First Crusades The First Crusades were military planned missions planned by Christian leaders;
the proclaimed purpose was to recover Jerusalem as well as Antioch, which were in an area known as
the Holy Land, from the controls of Turks. The reason why they feature so prominently in history is
because they were one of the longest battles in history. All three of the Crusades lasted about 200
years. Additionally, the Crusades were a major reason for why Europe came out of the Dark Ages.
After 200 years of darkness, Europe had a rebirth.
The Crusades were not an early example of European colonization even if they did create some
kingdoms there for a while. ( The Crusades ). It has been argued that the knights who went
adventuring in the Crusades were the second and third sons of nobles who, because of European
inheritance rules, had little to look forward by staying in Europe. However, most of the people who
responded to the call to Crusade weren t knights at all; they were poor people. Secondly, most of
nobles who did go crusading were lords of grand estates. ( Crusades .) This analysis of people of the
Crusades ignores religious motivations. History has approached religions as occurrences. For instance,
the unpredictable environments of Mesopotamia and Egypt led to a belief in various types of Gods
which would help solve each of their problems. However, just as the world shape religion, religious

In this paper I intend to show that the motives for the criminalization of marijuana was not for the
public good, but were inspired by bigotry and fear, and potentially for political and monetary gains.
This paper will also show that contemporary arguments for the continued criminalization of marijuana
are based on skewed studies rather than factual information and that regulation, taxation and
responsible use are the solutions to satisfying the demands of both sides of the issue. Finally, this
paper will examine the constitutionality of marijuana criminalization and whether it should be

One can draw parallels between the prohibition of alcohol and the criminalization of marijuana to see
the logic behind this premise. Prohibition was championed by groups such as the Anti Saloon League
who felt that alcohol was a blight on society and spoke out against its evil effects. Prohibition was
intended to curtail crime, yet crime increased in association with the manufacture, transport and sale
of illegal alcohol and led to the birth of organized crime syndicates here in America. Prohibition did
not thwart the public s use of alcohol; it only managed to drive its consumers underground. These
scenarios are all similar to what we see today in connection with the criminalization of marijuana.
Apart from the psychotropic aspects of marijuana, there is no dispute that it has industrial uses. Hemp
was being used in the manufacturing of rope well into the 20th century. A point could be made that
there were political and financial benefits to banning the cultivation of hemp in order to create a
demand for nylon, a new synthetic material that was being developed by DuPont, a company owned
by the affluent du Pont family. Currying favor with a family such as this obviously could reap certain
rewards politically and monetarily and this fact could have been yet another motivation to criminalize

Shakespeare s A Doll s House Essay
The Performance of Gender in Ibsen s A Doll s House It can be said that the sound of Nora Helmer
slamming the door behind her as she leaves her husband and children in pursuit of self actualization is
one of the most famous in theatre history. The journey the characters in A Doll s House take in order
to build to this powerful moment is a fascinating one. Countless scholars have analyzed aspects of
Ibsen s famous play; some have examined the complicated marriage between Nora and Torvald
Helmer, while others have found Ibsen s social commentary piquing their interest. In this particular
case, it is this paper s endeavor to thoroughly examine the ways in which gender is performed in this
classic play. Primarily, Judith Butler s famous book, Gender Trouble:Feminism and the Subversion of
Identity, will serve as the critical lens for this analysis. Two productions of Ibsen s work will provide
the performances for analysis: director Patrick Garland s 1973 film starring Claire Bloom and
Anthony Hopkins, and Mabou Mines postmodern adaptation. Butler s gender performance theory will
help to illuminate the social commentary and underlying themes present in Ibsen s masterpiece and
will hopefully reveal aspects of Nora and Torvald s character that were perhaps hidden until now.

Comparing Gilgamesh And Noah s Flood
Few stories written in ancient times, such as the ones about Noah and his flood and Gilgamesh and his
flood, have been able to survive the test of time. This why when books as well written as these two are
found from ancient times, people tend to be drawn toward them. Books such as these are often very
thoroughly studied and observed just because of how long ago they were written. It s enjoyable to
experience the type of writing a completely different time period was able to produce. However, with
all the praise the pieces get, comes great skepticism as well. A major event in both pieces of writing is
a divine inspired flood. Both books also have very similar characteristics within each of their flood
stories. The story of Noah s flood was based off of the flood of Gilgamesh and the timing of the pieces
being written and the similarities between the stories are the reason why. ... Show more content on

Skeptics claim that the flood narrative of Genesis is a rewritten version of an original myth
(freerepublic.com, 1). The myth they are referring to is that of Gilgamesh and his flood. It is believed
that the books could have been written up to 2800 years apart. Knowing the difference in time
between the writing of the two books is an essential step in understanding how Noah s flood was just
retold from the original flood of Gilgamesh. The most important part of revealing the copying of
Gilgamesh s flood is in all the different characteristics the floods share. Some of the similarities are
very striking (icr.org, 1). This quote is referring to the connections the author makes earlier in the
article between the two flood stories. Some of these connections include the floods being caused by
upset gods, the bringing of all species of animals on board, and the landing of the ship on a

Theories Of Love At First Sight In Romeo And Juliet
Is it really possible for people fall in love at first sight like in William Shakespeare s Romeo and
Juliet? Is it truly love at first sight or is it lust at first sight? The play, Romeo and Juliet, starts with
Romeo being head over heels in love with a beautiful girl name Rosaline which he mentions several
times to his cousins. Later in the play, during a party hosted by the Capulets, he gazes upon Juliet and
instantly falls in love with her. When asked again about Rosaline later in the play, he replies that he
has completely forgotten her name. It makes a person wonder if he was even as in love with Rosaline
as he told everyone. After reading this play the theory of love at first sight seems a highly unrealistic
explanation for two people

The Possibility Of Evil Short Story
We all like to look at things that appeal to us. But sometimes appearances can deceive us: such as a
good deal going online until you re ready to pay and they hit you with shipping and handling taxes and
therefore raising the price dramatically. Or a movie that has a good trailer but once you watch it as a
result the movie was not as good as it appeared to be. It s good to notice the bigger picture and to
analyze it in more depth, rather than judge it but it s first sight. The main characters in the short stories
Lamb to the Slaughter , by Roald Dahl, The Possibility of Evil , by Shirley Jackson, could have
adapted from this lesson. In Lamb to the Slaughter Mrs. Maloney is this sweet, loving and caring wife
who loves her husband dearly, but once he came back from work he hit her with heartbreaking and
bad news: which sets her off. In The Possibility of Evil Miss Strangeworth appears to be this kind and
respected elderly lady, but behind close doors she is completely different. Just because we see
something to appear to be good doesn t mean that it can t reveal it s true colors in a blink of an eye. Or
that it could be the total opposite of your initial though. In both stories, the reader discovers that even
though something may appear to be one thing, it could turn out to be something completely different.
In The Possibility of Evil, Shirley Jackson gives us a character who may seem to be the town s most
respected and longest established resident, but who actually

Using Online Reading Comprehension Skills
To find whether a source is credible they must develop online reading comprehension skills; these
skills are crucial because other researchers have found that children go online to clarify what they are
being taught in school. When kids are curious about something or have a question, it s always more
difficult for the teacher to get to everyone right away in class so they naturally become proactive and
find it out for themselves (Tsikalas). Kids researching and looking up information throughout the day
can make huge impacts on their learning and also improve cognition. It might be better to say that
today s children, more than ninety percent of whom will have an online history by age two, are
developing key tech friendly skills at an earlier age. By engaging kids brains in more complex tasks at
a young stage in their lives, toddlers are improving cognition, developing critical review skills, and
displaying a more advanced comprehension of both virtual and real worlds. Along with stronger
memory, better comprehension, and abstract thought, children who regularly use the internet also
show a more proactive approach to gathering information and feel an improved performance in
reading comprehension. Language fluency and vocabulary get a boost as well, and some kids even
experience a jump in IQ as high as six points. Beyond mental performance, kids and teens using the
Internet and social media demonstrate stronger social skills, better vocabularies, and greater
confidence. They

Essay on The Postmodernist Impulse and Sam Shepard
The term postmodernism is applied to several disciplines which include architecture, art, literature,
music, film, sociology, cultural and media studies, visual arts, philosophy, history. Communications
and technology. The beginning of postmodernism is quite unclear, however, it emerged as an area of
academic study in mid 1980s. Postmodernism is an outcome of the deep changes in social and
political life style in post industrialized societies with an attitude to question the truth and authority
put forth by such conditions. Critics have constantly been debating about the treatment of the prefix
post in postmodernism . According to some critics, the post designates a process of historical
succession. For them, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An uncomplicated way to think about postmodernism is by thinking about modernism, a movement
from which postmodernism seems to have emerged. Modernism evolved as a movement which
rejected the old Victorian standards about what art should mean. Figures like James Joyce, Virginia
Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Franz Kafka, and Mallarme are considered to be the originators of
twentieth century modernism. Modernism is characterized by an emphasis on subjectivity in writing, a
focus on how rather than what is perceived, an emphasis on fragmented forms and narratives, a self
consciousness regarding the production of the work of art , a rejection of genre distinctions and a
rejection of the distinction between high and low or popular culture. Postmodernism does follow
majority of these modernist ideas. However, there are some practical differences between modernism
and postmodernism. While modernism tends to present a fragmented view of human subjectivity, it
presents the fragmentation as something tragic, something to be lamented as a loss. Modernists aim at
unity, wholeness and totality, a unified set of values, a unified culture and lifestyle. In contrast,
Postmodernism, doesn t lament the idea of fragmentation, but rather celebrates that. Linda Hutcheon
says whereas in modernist one sensed a kind of wishful call to continuity beneath the fragmented
echoing, in

How Did Jean Jacques Rousseau Influence The Political World
He was something more than just an usual philosopher, and while his heritage to governmental issues
is huge it is critical not to ignore other roads of his idea. He was likewise an author, memoirist, and
performer. He had interests extending from workmanship and painting to sciences. He was a Man of
Enlightenment . Any judgment of his huge impact on French and European thought must consider the
effect of the greater part of his writings. The most supporting historical leader of the political world
was the French thinker Jean Jacques Rousseau. He was acknowledged by the working people because
he had many writings about human needs, how arts and sciences had not been beneficial to humankind
and how political levels were used to shape politics in the world today. His thinking is as significant,
he thought of human needs, for example, the need to entertain individual trust and the need to
reconnect with the regular world. Jean Jacques Rousseau remains a critical figure ever, both due to his
commitments to political reasoning and an amazing brain of science and due to his impact on later
inventions. What distracts Rousseau the most is to discover a method for saving human flexibility in

The Importance Of Language In English Language
I am interested in the overarching influence of language in human culture. My Individually Designed
Major in linguistics reflects this interest and prepares me for the application of linguistics in the field.
Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. According to the Linguistics Society of
America, such a study includes the structure of languages and the variance in language systems among
other topics (Macaulay and Syrett). My core courses emphasize the history of language, its
development, its perception, and my skills in foreign languages.
For example, by studying the history and development of a certain language in The English Language
(ENGL 346), the course prepares me for discussion and investigation of my first language. Since
English is such a popular second language, a thorough understanding of my first language is essential
to success in linguistics and in my future career path. The development of language is the classroom
was a common topic in Bilingual Education (EDUC 345), and the course discussed the application of
linguistic theories in the field of education.
For the development of my foreign language skills, I focus on two languages during my years at
Denison, so I have a diverse but comprehensive knowledge of language. German and Arabic are the
primary choices for my in depth study of language, and these two languages incorporate a knowledge
of distinct language families, i.e. Germanic and Seminitic. To support my knowledge in at least one of

Essay on Robert Frost s The Road Not Taken
The Road Not Taken: All the Difference
Each person must make many decisions in their lifetime. Some decisions are easy while others are
more difficult. The poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost is a first person narrative tale of a
monumental moment in Frost s life. Frost is faced between the choice of a moment and a lifetime.
Walking down a rural road the narrator encounters a point on his travel that diverges into two separate
similar paths. In Robert Frost s poem The Road Not Taken , Frost presents the idea of man facing the
difficult unalterable predilection of a moment and a lifetime. This idea in Frost s poem is embodied in
the fork in the road, the decision between the two paths, and the speaker s decision. ... Show more

The speaker s sight is limited his eyes can only see the path until it bends into the undergrowth. The
author shows man s attempts to tell which path is better by trying to for see what they will behold
down the road. Both roads diverge into a yellow wood and appear to be about the same in their
purpose. The first of the two paths is the more common route than the other less traveled path, which
wanted wear. Frost presents a classic conflict the decision between the common easy path and the
exceptional challenging path. Choosing the already known easy path in life many people frequently
endure reassures that the outcome will be predictable. While choosing the less traveled road represents
the gamble of facing a more difficult path in life in hopes to achieve an incomparable and satisfactory
life, contrasting the more familiar lives other people take.
The road not taken delineates man s choice. After vacillating between the two fair roads, he finally
decides to take the road less traveled by ; knowing he cannot see where it will lead. Traveling down
the second road, the speaker still yearns to travel both paths he keeps the first for another day. As the
narrator proceeds down the unworn path, he realizes there will be no way he can ever return to the
deviation to experience the other route. The speakers utters:
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

Importance Of The Depth Of Field
What if we end up in an area that has an abundance of distracting elements and we are unable to find a
vantage point to obscure these items through composition? If are fortunate enough to be in possession
of a telephoto lens, perhaps a 70 200mm, we can adjust the aperture to a small f/number such as f/2.8
or f/4.0 and use the lens near the 200mm end of its range and with the narrow depth of field make
these distractions disappear as soft out of focus colors and shapes. Thereby placing more emphasis on
our subject.
On the opposite end of the scale, what if we want a foreground element in focus along with the

As I stood and surveyed the scene, I observed people of all ages, walking, jogging and cycling along

And with the use of depth of field, I could tell this story. I had my 24 70mm lens already mounted
from earlier usage on this day and I set up my tripod and camera in such a way to frame with two
posts anchoring the edges of my frame. With it being afternoon, the sun would be backlighting the
leaves from camera left, causing them to glow, and slivers of dappled light would play across the
decking of the bridge. This was foreground interest that gave context to my location and photograph. I
chose a focus point based on using what is known as Hyperlocal Distance. Which in the simplest
terms possible means that for any given focal length and aperture, there is a distance that when
focused at will see the entire scene rendered acceptably sharp.

As people were having fewer children at this time, the population growth of Canada slowed. In an
effort to keep jobs for Canadians, the government decided that it would reduce immigration. The first
group targeted was the Jewish people. Some Canadians even decided to go to the United States in
search of greener pastures . The movement of people from the country to cities also slowed. This was
because it was easier for people to subsist in the country where they could chop their own firewood
and live off the land. Life on the farm was actually not much better than in the city, as a drought cost
many farmers, particularly those in the west, their crops.
The political scene was dominated by a Liberal party that would not commit a five cent piece towards
the cost of unemployment relief . This eventually led to their defeat in the summer of 1930. The
winner of the election was the Conservative party. Their goal was to get Canada back up and running.
In an effort to do so, they raised tariffs on imports and tried to protect national interests. This actually
had the opposite affect on the economy and pushed the country further into economic hardship. The
government around this time was also trying to balance the budget. In order to balance the budget,
they increased taxes which also had a detrimental affect on the economy. After five years, the
Conservatives were defeated due to unorganized leadership. The Liberals won the election in 1935.

Iron In Ancient China Research Paper
Iron In Ancient China
Iron was first found being used in about 5000 B.C. in Mesopotamia. But the Chinese started to use it
in 1500 B.C. Iron revolutionised the ancient chinese warfare and created strong trade relationships.
The chinese switched from using bronze to iron in 1500 BC. They switched because there was an
abundance of it and it was also stronger than bronze in some cases. Iron allowed the chinese to make
items that were much more durable. Iron a lot harder to smelt but when placed in a smelter with two
percent carbon generated by the fire it would make one of the strongest substances on earth. The level
of mastery of this skill of melting iron shows how advanced this civilization really was. Iron made

Apple Debt Ratio
Debt Ratio Apple is still the world s largest company financially according to Google s recent earnings
report. Apple has a $521.3 billion market funding, as of Feb. 5, 2016. Now, I will like to analyze the
importance of Apple debt ratios. Apple increases its capital return program in 2015 with the hopes of
returning $200 billion to its investors by March 2017, from that Apple s debt offerings is now over
$55 billion as of September 2015. Appropriate measurements in finding Apple s debt include the debt
to equity, debt, cash flow to debt and capitalization ratios. The debt ratio indicates a company s degree
of advantage, which is calculated by dividing its total debt by its total assets during an accounting
period. A high debt to equity ratio

Analysis Of Turtle Mountain Community College
I. Executive Summary
Turtle Mountain Community College is a tribal community college with obligations of direct
community service to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. Under this unifying principle
the college seeks to maintain, seek out and provide comprehensive higher education services in fields
needed for true Indian self determination.
Self determination is ultimately about the concept of sovereignty: the right of a people to govern
themselves. Indian tribes are viewed as sovereign nations by the constitution. The Supreme Court has
described tribes as domestic, dependent nations, meaning that some of their aboriginal sovereignty has
been given to the federal government (Native American Netroots.)
The philosophical foundation of the college is embedded in the system of values that stem from the
heritage and culture of the Anishinabe people and expressed in the Seven Teachings of the Tribe:
Wisdom, Peace, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility and Truth. (www.tm.edu)
The Turtle Mountain Community College recruits its students through various forms of media which
includes, but is not limited to: radio stations, print media, social media such as Facebook, and verbally.
Now days the younger generation is more apt to actually be aware of the College through different
forms of social media instead of before where colleges actually had to go out in the community and
other areas in order to recruit students. The College employees promotes its services at other

Negative Effects Of Technology On Adolescents
Effects of Technology on Adolescents In America today technology is always advancing. Technology
has made many positive impacts on adolescents such as online schooling, the ability to meet new
people, the opportunity to express and give their opinions, the ability to express themselves, and also
the resources to keep in contact with friends and family. Although there are many positives to
technology, there are also negatives such as distractions, technical difficulties, cyberbullying, online
hackers, and availability of resources. A study conducted by Pew Research Center collected data that
92 percent of teens reported going online daily (Lenhart). This proves that a majority of adolescents
are using technology in their everyday lives. Technology has allowed students to use the internet to
advance in their school work. The Internet is a primary research tool for teens. Census data indicates
that 85 percent of older teens 14 17 and 77 percent of tweens 10 13 go online to do schoolwork.
Among those teens who are online, 94 percent use the Internet for school research and 34 percent have
downloaded a study aid (The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation). Technology has also allowed
students to take classes online at a college while still in high school. I have personally interviewed two
students a Taylor High School, Emily Good who is enrolled in the college credit plus program, this
program allows her to take college classes online through Cincinnati State and receive a high

Aristotle And Socrates
To answer the question, I will be comparing Pericles s, Aristotle s and Socrates s thoughts about
whether to think ourselves as friends or as strangers. Pericles and Aristotle conceptualize political
communities largely as associations of friends. Pericles believes that participation in democracy, is in
a way allows Athenians to become great warriors, to develop friendship and to have communal
beliefs. Friendship and community are integral to democracy. Pericles said, a man who is private has
no business in Athens. The idea of Democracy is that citizens get the opportunities to participate in
state affairs and help to make certain decisions. Athens is a democratic city, they give equal rights and
opportunities to their citizens to participate in political matters and let their citizens voice be heard. If
you are Athenian citizen, you are very lucky individuals. Socrates on the other hand, conceptualizes
political communities largely as associations of strangers. Socrates believes that it is better to think
about ourselves as strangers than friends. Socrates likes his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

If they allow others who are not citizens to get involved in the political matters and have a total
stranger who has a wise opinion on certain matter, there will be different and better outcomes. For
those reasons Socrates philosophies are the better of the two. Pericles and Aristotle failed in this
aspect, because their idea does not allow everyone to participate in the government, particularly those
who are mechanics, even those mechanics who are wise and can offer innovative ideas cannot
participate due to their

  • 2. Why Are Value Investors Successful Value investing is the strategy of purchasing an asset which is trading at a significant discount from its determined intrinsic value. It has long been regarded as a low risk method of providing outstanding investment returns (Klarman 2001). Specifically average annual returns of 19.8% were reported. They were also able to surmise that there is no support for the hypothesis that value strategies are fundamentally riskier. Piotroski (2000) expanded on research into a low P/BV strategy by only choosing financially strong firms using nine fundamental financial signals. This refined investment strategy was shown to generate returns above value portfolios formed solely by the low P/BV screening method. He then improved on this approach by demonstrating a strategy of short selling the financially weaker low P/BV firms to produce over all returns of 23% per annum. Piotroski also notes that initial signs of improvement in financial performance are at first ignored by market participants, with share price reactions only occurring during subsequent positive quarterly earnings announcements. Investors and analysts have a tendency to rely too heavily on the record of past earnings growth (La Porta et al. 1997). According to Lakonishok, Shleifer Vishny (1994) popular strategies like extrapolating past earnings growth too far into the future or assuming a trend in stock prices , overreacting to good or bad news , or simply equating a good investment with a well run company ... Autism Spectrum Disorder and Interventions Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that develops during a child s first few years of life (Lesack, Bearss, Celano, Sharp, 2014). However, there was no evidence for those notions but parents still held on to the belief that the diet and or vaccinations were responsible for causing autism. The reason for the idea of the measles and mumps vaccination causing autism was that autism would develop in children around the same time when the child would need to get the vaccination. This became suspicious to people. The reason for the idea of the children s diet causing autism was that there were publications of a controversial article stating that there was a link between enterogastric toxins appearing from eating foods that had gluten in them and autism. With this idea too there was nothing proven that a gluten allergy and autism were linked (Thompson, 2013). When children are able to receive early education that supports their development there diagnostic symptoms are likely to decrease and even go away, permitting those children who have autism to reach parallel developmental levels with other typically developing children around the same age (Sari, 2014). There are multiple different programs and interventions a child with autism can go through to help them succeed in life as best as they can as well as programs and interventions the children s parents can participate in with the child. • 4. Behavioral And Emotional Aspect Of Human Thinking approach deals with the behavioral and emotional aspect of human thinking. Humans are complex there is no single way to help them stop the behavior. REBT assumes a persons problems come from their mistaken cognitions, which they have perceived. Which have lead to over or under reactions, this behavior becomes habitual and the person creates a dysfunctional pattern. The pattern enables them to continue to repeat the poor behavior, although they know it is unhealthly. In addition REBT, we label our reactions either consciouly or unconsciouly, therefore if we feel depressed, anxious or fearful it is because we have convinced ourselves and validate our emotional reaction. One major tenet of REBT is external events do not determine a persons feelings, a persons individuals beliefs about the event determine if the person has a problem or not. Thus, we are not upset about an event in our particular life, what makes us upset is our interpretation of the event. Intervention The REBT framwork of Albert Ellis (1962) operates as one ot the most straightforward and well known models for explaining the connection between events, thoughts, beliefs, cognitions, emotions, and behaviors (Field, Beeson, Jones, 2015, p. 207)REBT has two competing models, one (classic) assumes dysfuncational negative feeling (anxiety, depressed, anger), differ from corresponsing feeling like concern, remorse and sadness. All successful relationships are built through communication, trust, loyalty and respect are built through good communication. So, it is no surprise that the Administrative Management Society found that 80% of managers rated communication as the most important skill of perspective employees. Another study conducted by a college placement service found that hundreds of college alumni believe that communication abilities were more important to their job success than their actual majors. Most people tend to focus on the verbal portion of communication, often forgetting about the non verbal portion. • 7. Persuasion As A Political Leader In today s society, we are easily influenced to think and act a certain way. For example, we are influenced by the media to buy things and meet certain standards, however, we often don t protest or question why. Through persuasion, one alters another s perspective on an event or occurrence and because of this, people usually tend to accept what is being said or portrayed. According to Petty and Cacioppo (1986), there are two routes to persuasion. When one tries to persuade another by being more caring and have a good understanding of the message they are delivering, this is called the central route to persuasion. The second route to persuasion is better known as the peripheral route to persuasion. This occurs when the one being addressed simply agrees with what is being said based on certain superficial cues rather than the actual message. Political persuasion methods are widely used, especially in campaigns. As a political leader, one detains the ultimate power to influence the population. Being a political leader, however, is never easy. Sometimes, one must make tough decisions that many of the population might not agree on. For instance, if a person in power chose to bomb a foreign country, this would create mayhem and thus his followers or just people in society would start to doubt his decision and may lead to riots. This specific political leader must debate his case and persuade the population that his decision was the right thing to do. In order to do so, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Countries such as America and China are well known for their excessive use of the media to cover important and none important events around the nation. The general public is affected by the media s control in many forms, which can include media marketing of consumerism and social media. The Truman Show alludes the society in which compliance is forced, due to the media s overwhelming control over the general public; and argues that there is no actual media control can be broken free from, because it is a person s choice to seek their own path to freedom. The First Crusades During The Crusades Jeet Kothari Mr. Turner Honors British Literature A 29 January 2016 The First Crusades The First Crusades were military planned missions planned by Christian leaders; the proclaimed purpose was to recover Jerusalem as well as Antioch, which were in an area known as the Holy Land, from the controls of Turks. The reason why they feature so prominently in history is because they were one of the longest battles in history. All three of the Crusades lasted about 200 years. Additionally, the Crusades were a major reason for why Europe came out of the Dark Ages. After 200 years of darkness, Europe had a rebirth. The Crusades were not an early example of European colonization even if they did create some kingdoms there for a while. ( The Crusades ). It has been argued that the knights who went adventuring in the Crusades were the second and third sons of nobles who, because of European inheritance rules, had little to look forward by staying in Europe. However, most of the people who responded to the call to Crusade weren t knights at all; they were poor people. Secondly, most of nobles who did go crusading were lords of grand estates. One can draw parallels between the prohibition of alcohol and the criminalization of marijuana to see the logic behind this premise. Prohibition was championed by groups such as the Anti Saloon League who felt that alcohol was a blight on society and spoke out against its evil effects. Prohibition was intended to curtail crime, yet crime increased in association with the manufacture, transport and sale of illegal alcohol and led to the birth of organized crime syndicates here in America. Prohibition did not thwart the public s use of alcohol; it only managed to drive its consumers underground. These scenarios are all similar to what we see today in connection with the criminalization of marijuana. Apart from the psychotropic aspects of marijuana, there is no dispute that it has industrial uses. Hemp was being used in the manufacturing of rope well into the 20th century. A point could be made that there were political and financial benefits to banning the cultivation of hemp in order to create a demand for nylon, a new synthetic material that was being developed by DuPont, a company owned by the affluent du Pont family. The journey the characters in A Doll s House take in order to build to this powerful moment is a fascinating one. Countless scholars have analyzed aspects of Ibsen s famous play; some have examined the complicated marriage between Nora and Torvald Helmer, while others have found Ibsen s social commentary piquing their interest. In this particular case, it is this paper s endeavor to thoroughly examine the ways in which gender is performed in this classic play. Primarily, Judith Butler s famous book, Gender Trouble:Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, will serve as the critical lens for this analysis. Two productions of Ibsen s work will provide the performances for analysis: director Patrick Garland s 1973 film starring Claire Bloom and Anthony Hopkins, and Mabou Mines postmodern adaptation. Butler s gender performance theory will help to illuminate the social commentary and underlying themes present in Ibsen s masterpiece and will hopefully reveal aspects of Nora and Torvald s character that were perhaps hidden until now. It s enjoyable to experience the type of writing a completely different time period was able to produce. However, with all the praise the pieces get, comes great skepticism as well. A major event in both pieces of writing is a divine inspired flood. Both books also have very similar characteristics within each of their flood stories. The myth they are referring to is that of Gilgamesh and his flood. It is believed that the books could have been written up to 2800 years apart. Knowing the difference in time between the writing of the two books is an essential step in understanding how Noah s flood was just retold from the original flood of Gilgamesh. The most important part of revealing the copying of Gilgamesh s flood is in all the different characteristics the floods share. Some of the similarities are very striking (icr.org, 1). Later in the play, during a party hosted by the Capulets, he gazes upon Juliet and instantly falls in love with her. • 24. The Possibility Of Evil Short Story We all like to look at things that appeal to us. But sometimes appearances can deceive us: such as a good deal going online until you re ready to pay and they hit you with shipping and handling taxes and therefore raising the price dramatically. Or a movie that has a good trailer but once you watch it as a result the movie was not as good as it appeared to be. It s good to notice the bigger picture and to analyze it in more depth, rather than judge it but it s first sight. The main characters in the short stories Lamb to the Slaughter , by Roald Dahl, The Possibility of Evil , by Shirley Jackson, could have adapted from this lesson. In Lamb to the Slaughter Mrs. Maloney is this sweet, loving and caring wife who loves her husband dearly, but once he came back from work he hit her with heartbreaking and bad news: which sets her off. In The Possibility of Evil Miss Strangeworth appears to be this kind and respected elderly lady, but behind close doors she is completely different. Just because we see something to appear to be good doesn t mean that it can t reveal it s true colors in a blink of an eye. Or that it could be the total opposite of your initial though. In both stories, the reader discovers that even though something may appear to be one thing, it could turn out to be something completely different. Using Online Reading Comprehension Skills To find whether a source is credible they must develop online reading comprehension skills; these skills are crucial because other researchers have found that children go online to clarify what they are being taught in school. When kids are curious about something or have a question, it s always more difficult for the teacher to get to everyone right away in class so they naturally become proactive and find it out for themselves (Tsikalas). Kids researching and looking up information throughout the day can make huge impacts on their learning and also improve cognition. It might be better to say that today s children, more than ninety percent of whom will have an online history by age two, are developing key tech friendly skills at an earlier age. By engaging kids brains in more complex tasks at a young stage in their lives, toddlers are improving cognition, developing critical review skills, and displaying a more advanced comprehension of both virtual and real worlds. Along with stronger memory, better comprehension, and abstract thought, children who regularly use the internet also show a more proactive approach to gathering information and feel an improved performance in reading comprehension. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An uncomplicated way to think about postmodernism is by thinking about modernism, a movement from which postmodernism seems to have emerged. Modernism evolved as a movement which rejected the old Victorian standards about what art should mean. Figures like James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Franz Kafka, and Mallarme are considered to be the originators of twentieth century modernism. Modernism is characterized by an emphasis on subjectivity in writing, a focus on how rather than what is perceived, an emphasis on fragmented forms and narratives, a self consciousness regarding the production of the work of art , a rejection of genre distinctions and a rejection of the distinction between high and low or popular culture. Postmodernism does follow majority of these modernist ideas. However, there are some practical differences between modernism and postmodernism. While modernism tends to present a fragmented view of human subjectivity, it presents the fragmentation as something tragic, something to be lamented as a loss. Modernists aim at unity, wholeness and totality, a unified set of values, a unified culture and lifestyle. In contrast, Postmodernism, doesn t lament the idea of fragmentation, but rather celebrates that.
