FLEXIBLE ALTERNATING CURRENT TRANSMISSION 
SYSTEMS(FACTS) 
 A flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) is a 
system composed of static equipment used for the AC 
transmission of electrical energy. 
They increase the reliability of AC grids and reduce power 
delivery costs. 
They improve transmission quality and efficiency of power 
transmission by supplying inductive or reactive power to the grid.

Series compensation 
 FACTS is connected in series with the power system. 
 It works as a controllable voltage source. 
 On long lines, when a large current flows, this causes 
a large voltage drop. 
 To compensate, series capacitors are connected, 
decreasing the effect of the inductance..

Shunt compensation 
 In shunt compensation, power system is 
connected in shunt (parallel) with the FACTS. 
 . It works as a controllable current source 
 Shunt compensation is of two types: 
1.Shunt capacitive compensation 
2. Shunt inductive compensation

Shunt capacitive compensation 
 This method is used to improve the power factor. 
 Whenever an inductive load is connected to the 
transmission line, power factor lags because of 
lagging load current. 
 To compensate, a shunt capacitor is connected which 
draws current leading the source voltage. 
 The net result is improvement in power factor.

Shunt inductive compensation 
 This method is used either when charging 
the transmission line, or, when there is very low load 
at the receiving end 
 Shunt capacitance in the transmission line causes 
voltage amplification . 
 To compensate, shunt inductors are connected across 
the transmission line. 
 The power transfer capability is thereby increased .

Static Synchronous Compensator 
(STATCOM) 
It is a static synchronous generator as 
shunt static var compensator whose 
capacitive or inductive current can be 
controlled independent of the system 
voltage.

APPLICATION 
• This research will investigate the use of 
renewable dispersed energy system (wind-small 
hydro, hybrid scheme) and resulting grid 
interface problems and need for effective

energy conversion is not found yet

FACTS FOR THE FUTURE 
 FACTS technology can increase the loading on 
existing systems and assist in directing power flow in 
an interconnected network. 
 The first element in this work is to develop large 
semiconductors capable of handling power-class 
voltages and currents. 
 The increasing demand for electricity owing to the 
growing population and economic development 
worldwide is the most important factor in the growth 
of the global FACTS market.

CONCLUSION 
 FACTS technology provides an alternative to building new 
power transmission lines or power generation facilities. 
 It is a comparatively inexpensive and fast way to provide 
more power and control in existing networks, with minimal 
environmental impact. 
 FACTS solutions help power companies increase transmission 
capacity over existing AC power lines, providing fast voltage 
regulation, active power control and load flow control in 
meshed power systems.
