Positive Reinforcement
Igniting Student Motivation
eduskillsbyrk.com
• Welcome to Eduskills By RK.
• Today we are going to discuss Positive Reinforcement: Igniting
Student Motivation.
• We will also explore the powerful tool of positive reinforcement in
education.
• Positive Reinforcement: It is a technique that involves rewarding
desired behaviours to increase their occurrence.
• It capitalises on the idea that when students associate a behaviour
with a positive outcome, they are more likely to repeat that behaviour.
• Eg: Getting paid for good grades.
INTRODUCTION

BENEFITS OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
• Fosters a positive learning
environment.
• Increases student engagement and
participation.
• Enhances self-esteem and self-
efficacy.
• Encourages intrinsic motivation.
eduskillsbyrk.com
• Verbal praise and encouragement
• Tangible rewards such as stickers, certificates, or
small prizes.
• Privileges or special activities.
• Providing opportunities for autonomy or choice.
TYPES OF POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
eduskillsbyrk.com
TIPS FOR
EFFECTIVE
POSITIVE REINFORECEMENT
• Be specific with your praise,
focusing on the behaviour you
want to reinforce.
• Use immediate reinforcement to
make the connection between
behaviour and reward clear.
• Individualise reinforcement to
suit students’ preferences &
needs.
• Gradually reduce the frequency
of reinforcement as the
behaviour becomes ingrained.
eduskillsbyrk.com
• Avoid over-reliance on extrinsic rewards.
• Ensure that rewards are meaningful and
age-appropriate.
• Maintain a balance between positive
reinforcement and constructive feedback.
AVOIDING PITFALLS
eduskillsbyrk.com
• Positive reinforcement helps students develop a
growth mindset.
• Encourages the internalisation of positive
behaviours.
• Cultivates a positive teacher- student
relationship.
LONG TERM IMPACT
eduskillsbyrk.com
• Emily is a fifth grade student who had been struggling with completing her homework and assignments consistently.
• She often showed disinterest in class and had a tendency to procrastinate.
• Therefore, Emily’s teacher decided to implement a positive reinforcement strategy to encourage her to complete her
homework on time and actively participate in class.
• The teacher had given Emily a “Homework Star Chart.” Each time she completed her homework on time, she
received a star sticker for that day on the chart.
• Emily was offered the opportunity to choose a preferred activity, such as leading a group discussion or picking a topic
for a class project, whenever she actively participated in class.
• Emily was excited about earning stars for completing her homework and began to view it as a personal challenge.
• The star chart served as a visual representation of her progress and she felt motivated to maintain her
streak.
• Over a few weeks, Emily’s consistent completion of homework became a habit. Her engagement during the class
discussions increased significantly, and her peers began to look up to her as a role model.
• Emily’s transformation is a testament to the power of positive reinforcement in motivating students.
• By acknowledging her efforts and rewarding her achievements, Emily’s teacher helped her discover her potential and
foster a positive attitude towards learning.
Emily’s Remarkable Transformation Through Positive
Reinforcement.
