June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Front Cover Images
I am going to have one image on the front cover, which is going to take up most of the space on the
page. The person that is going to be on the image is my friend Patricia who is going to be my
coverstar. Patricia is going to wear a top which is going to show a bit of one of her left shoulder. The
colours on her top are going to be cream with a bit of light and maybe darker brown or even red as
this will go well with the colour scheme of my magazine. Her hair is going to be down and slightly
crinkled to give it a different look, her hair is also going to be over her shoulders with some strips of hair
at the back. The make up that she is going to wear is going to be just casual but the focus is going to
be on her eyes, as she will have eye liner going round her eyes and a quite dark eye shadow on the
top of her eyes and lighter in the corner of her eyes and under her eyes. Patricia is going to be sat on
a stool and she will be holding an acoustic guitar as this will go well with the genre of the magazine.
She is going to look directly at the camera with just a neutral expression on her face. The image is
going to be a mid shot as it is going to be only down to her waist. The picture is going to be taken
outside as, there is going to be a better lighting when the sun is out rather than being inside. The
image will also be taken against a fence in my back garden as this will be the best place as the
image is later on going to be edited and cut out in Photoshop and the background on my magazine
is going to be a gradient. Through this image the reader is going to be able to tell that this is a music
magazine because of the props being used which is the acoustic guitar. The image will fit with the
coverlines on the cover as there will be a coverline referring to the image.
3. Coverlines For The Front Cover
There are going to be four different coverlines on the front cover of the magazine. I have chosen
there to be four coverlines as I think this will fill up the page nicely and there won’t be too little or too
many coverlines on the page. All the coverlines that are going to be on my front cover are going to
be referring to the main articles that are going to be featured in my magazine, and are going to give
an insight of what articles can be found in this issue of the magazine. The main coverline is going to
be the biggest on the page and it’s going to be referring to the main image and will be positioned
over the image so that the reader knows that this coverline is referring to the coverstar. Besides the
coverlines there also will be a puff on the page, a banner on the bottom of the page which will have
different buzz words on and a skyline at the top of the page which will be promoting the article that is
going to be featured on the double page spread.
The coverlines that are going to be on the front cover are as follows:
“Look inside for the exclusive interview with Lucy Barlow!”
“Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington & Esperanza Spalding talk about becoming a TRIO”
“Lianne La Havas shares her top Secrets to Success”
“Patricia Talks about Her Latest Hits” – This is going to be the main coverline
The top banner will say: “Check Out The Exclusive Interview With Lucy Barlow!”
The bottom banner will say: “Events/ Interviews/ Festivals/ Reviews/ Top Charts”
4. Text For The Contents Page
The main text on my contents page which is the list of the articles will be divided into two columns.
The first column will have all the regular articles in it, and it will say “Regular” in bold at the top of the
column and it will be in a box which is going to be in a different colour than the background so that it
stands out and so that the reader can see. The second column will have the list of the feature
content and it will say “Features” in bold at the top of the column, and again will have the same box
around it so that it stands out from the rest of the page. There will be page numbers on the left side of
the name of the article and they will be slightly bigger than the n titles of the articles, and they will
also be in a different colour. There will be a line under the name of the article and the text which will
briefly explain what the article will be about. The line which underlines the titles of the articles will be
the same colour as the page numbers. The sentences explaining what the article is going to be
about are going to be in a smaller font that the titles of the articles.
At the top of the contents page there will be a banner which will say “CONTENS” and it will be the
biggest text on the page. On the banner there also will be the issue details of the magazine and the
date. Below the issue details there will be the name of the magazine’s website that the reader can
go to and the Facebook page of the magazine.
5. Text For The Contents Page
This is what the titles of the articles will be like on the contents page with the sentences underneath.

6. Images For the Contents Page
On the contents page for my magazine I would like to have four different images. The first image that
I want on my contents page is an image of the Jazz Statues that are in the Trafford Centre. This would
be the biggest image on the page and it would go well with the genre of my magazine.
The second image that I would like to have on the contents page is an image of the singer Lucy who
is going to be on my double page spread. I want the image of her on my contents page as it will go
along with one of the articles that are going to be listed in the contents. I am going to take the
image at the same time as I’m taking the images for the double page spread.
The third image that I would like to have on the contents page is an image of the coverstar. I would
like to have the image of the coverstar on my contents page as one of the article listings on the
contents page is going to refer to the coverstar. I am going to take the photo at the same time I am
going to take the photo for the front cover which is going to take place outside in my back garden.
The final photo that I would like to have on my contents page is an image of an acoustic guitar. I
want to have an image of an acoustic guitar as there is going to be a competition where the reader
can win a chance of winning an acoustic guitar. I am going to take an image of the acoustic guitar
in my house and I am going to take an image of the full guitar and also of only one part of the guitar,
as I will need it for the competition.
7. Images For Double Page Spread and
Article ideas
The article that I am going to write for my double page spread is going to be an interview with a
singer called Lucy Barlow. I am going to meet up with Lucy in the Trafford Centre where I am going to
interview her, and take photographs for the double page spread and the contents page. The article
will be on the right hand side of the double page spread and the images will fill the left hand side of
the double page spread.
The images that I will need for the double page spread are images of Lucy. Some of the images that I
will need is Lucy posing with the guitar. All the photos are going to be taken in the Trafford Centre so
one of the images will be taken when Lucy is sitting on the stairs in the Trafford centre holding her
guitar, she is going to look directly at the camera, I will also want a photo of her at the same place
with the guitar but this time she would be stood up. Another photo that I will need is a photo of Lucy
with the Jazz Statues as the genre that she sings in is Jazz so that will go well with the genre that she
sings in. I would also want to take a photo of her with the microphone so she looks like she is singing.
Besides the photos that I will take in the Trafford Centre when I meet her to interview her, I am also
going to go to one of her gigs. And there I will take photos of her on stage singing, and photos of the
audience. I will need these photos as I would like them to be around the page on my double page
spread so that the reader knows what she looks like when she is actually performing, and not just at a
set up photoshoot. These images will also relate to the article as in the article I will ask her questions
about her gigs, and her music career so far.
8. Rough Sketches of the Front Cover and
the Contents Page.
These are the rough
sketches for the front
cover for my music
magazine and the
contents page. On these
sketches you can see
how I’m planning to set
out my front cover and
the contents page, and
my ideas of how I have
imagined it to look like
which will help me with
the production as I will
know of how to set it up in
Photoshop and Quark.
